Recover Deleted Downloads on Windows: Which Recovery Method to Choose

To recover a deleted download on Windows, first stop saving files to the affected drive, then check the Recycle Bin and any OneDrive recycle bin or backup. If the file is permanently deleted from local storage, Microsoft’s Windows File Recovery can attempt a scan, but it needs a different drive for recovered files and cannot guarantee success.

Before choosing a method, confirm that the file itself was deleted. Removing an item from a browser’s download history may leave the downloaded file on the computer; that distinction appears in Drecov’s search-result snippet, but Google’s primary guidance was not independently verified here. Search Downloads and likely alternate folders before running recovery software.

First, identify where the download went

Recovery depends on what happened to the file and where it was stored. A missing entry in a browser’s download list is not conclusive evidence that the file was deleted. Check the Downloads folder and other likely save locations, and consider whether the file was moved or stored in a synced OneDrive folder.

Situation First place to check What to know
The file was deleted from a local folder Windows Recycle Bin If it is no longer there, Windows File Recovery can attempt recovery from local storage.
The Downloads folder was synced with OneDrive OneDrive on the web Use the OneDrive recycle bin for cloud-deleted items; its retention period depends on account type and settings.
The item only disappeared from browser history Downloads and other likely folders Drecov’s search-result snippet says removing a Chrome download-history entry does not itself delete the computer file; that statement was not independently checked against Google documentation.
The file was on a network share The share’s recycle bin, backup, or administrator Windows File Recovery does not support network shares.

Stop using the affected drive before trying recovery

A deleted file may remain in free space until new data overwrites it. Microsoft advises minimizing or avoiding computer use to improve the chance of recovery, and notes that overwriting is especially possible on SSDs. Avoid downloading, installing, or saving files to the affected drive. If you can, use a separate drive for recovered output.

Data Recovery Stick for Windows Data Recovery Software – Photos, Files
  • The Data Recovery Stick requires no technical skills — simply plug it into your Windows computer, click Start, and the software automatically begins scanning and recovering lost files within minutes. Compatible with Windows Vista, 7, 8, 10, & 11, it's designed to be a reliable first step when accidental deletion occurs.
  • Recover photos (JPG, BMP, PNG, TIFF), Microsoft Office documents (Word, Excel, PowerPoint, Publisher, Access), Open Office files, MP3 music files, PDFs, RTF documents, AutoCAD files, and HTML web pages. Whether it's personal memories or critical business files, the Data Recovery Stick covers the file types that matter most.
  • Works with hard drives, USB drives, SD cards, memory sticks, and other common storage formats that use FAT or NTFS file systems — making it a single solution for hard drive recovery, USB drive recovery, SD card recovery, and more. Note: a media reader is required for micro SD cards and some mass storage devices.
  • No Installation Required - The Data Recovery Stick runs entirely from the USB drive with no software installation on your computer — helping prevent new data from overwriting the files you're trying to recover. This also makes it ideal for use across multiple computers or in emergency situations where installation isn't practical.
  • Use the Data Recovery Stick on as many computers as often as needed — simply clear the recovered data between uses to free up storage space. Software updates keep the tool compatible with newer systems and devices, backed by 25+ years of data software expertise from Paraben Consumer Software.

Check the Recycle Bin and OneDrive

Restore from the Windows Recycle Bin

Open the Recycle Bin, find the file, right-click it, and select Restore. Windows returns it to its original folder. If the file is not there, continue to the cloud or backup checks before scanning local storage.

Restore a synced download from OneDrive

Go to the OneDrive website, open its recycle bin, select the item, and choose Restore. Microsoft’s support page, accessed in 2026, lists a 30-day recovery window for personal accounts and 93 days for work or school accounts, unless an administrator changed the retention setting. Those published periods do not guarantee that an individual account still has the same configuration. Cloud-deleted online-only files may not appear in the local Windows Recycle Bin. Items permanently deleted from the OneDrive recycle bin cannot be restored through that bin.

Choose a mode and destination

Microsoft’s general syntax is winfr source-drive: destination-drive: [/mode] [/switches]. The source and destination drives must be different. If Windows and the deleted file are on the only drive in the computer, connect a USB or external drive to use as the destination.

  • Regular mode: Microsoft recommends this for recently deleted files on NTFS drives.
  • Extensive mode: Microsoft lists this for older deletions, formatted or corrupted NTFS drives, and FAT or exFAT drives.

When recovering from the Windows operating-system drive, use a filter to target the relevant files or folder. Save recovered output to a separate drive, not back to the source drive.

Run a folder-focused scan

  1. Install Windows File Recovery from the Microsoft Store, if it is not already installed. Windows 10 support ended on October 14, 2025; do not interpret the app’s Windows 10 applicability as Microsoft support for Windows 10 after that date.
  2. Connect a separate destination drive and note its drive letter. Confirm the source drive letter and your Windows profile name.
  3. Open Windows File Recovery and use an adapted Microsoft command pattern for Downloads: winfr C: E: /regular /n Users<username>Downloads. Replace <username> with the actual profile folder and E: with the separate destination drive. Keep the trailing backslash after Downloads. This adapts Microsoft’s Documents-folder example; it is not a separately tested command.
  4. Follow the app’s prompts and inspect the destination drive for recovered files.

Check the profile and drive letters carefully before starting. A scan can fail if the deleted data has already been overwritten, and no recovery method guarantees that a file will come back intact.

When Drecov may be an option

Only consider third-party recovery software after checking the Recycle Bin, OneDrive, and backups, and after weighing the risk of writing more data to the affected drive. Drecov’s search-result snippet positions its product for readable local storage after built-in recovery routes fail. The snippet says it does not repair failed disks or restore overwritten data.
