Record your Mac screen with the built-in Screenshot tool
Screenshot is the quickest built-in way to capture a full display or a specific area. It creates a video file without requiring another recorder.

Include your voice
Open Options before clicking Record and select the microphone you want to use. A USB microphone is the most directly relevant hardware upgrade when spoken instructions need to sound clearer than the Mac’s built-in microphone allows. Make a short test recording first so you can check the input level and background noise.

Click the stop control in the menu bar when the demonstration is complete. The resulting file can be opened immediately from the thumbnail or later in QuickTime Player.
QuickTime Player for simple edits
Open the recording in QuickTime Player for immediate playback and basic editing. QuickTime is a good fit when the job is limited to checking the clip and removing unwanted material at the beginning or end. For a project with multiple sections, titles or overlays, move to iMovie instead.
iMovie for a finished presentation
Import the recording into iMovie when you need a timeline rather than a single quick trim. iMovie supports titles, music, voiceover, transitions, speed changes, picture-in-picture, split-screen and green-screen effects. It also supports 4K video and exports to common social destinations.
- Create a new iMovie project and import the screen-recording file.
- Drag the clip to the timeline.
- Trim the start and end, split out pauses or mistakes, and rearrange sections as needed.
- Add titles, narration, music or visual effects from the relevant iMovie tools.
- Preview the complete timeline, then use iMovie’s sharing and export controls to create the delivery file.
Choose a recorder when the built-in tools are not enough
Native Screenshot and QuickTime prioritize speed and a short path from capture to file. Other Mac recorders are useful when you need more control over scenes, audio sources, tracks or presentation polish.

Use Camtasia for separate tracks
Camtasia is aimed at editors who want the screen, webcam, microphone and system audio recorded on separate tracks. Independent tracks make it easier to rebalance narration, replace a webcam segment or edit a tutorial in a multitrack timeline.
Use Screen Studio for automatic Mac presentation polish

- Check the first and last seconds for accidental desktop activity before exporting.
- Watch the complete file once to confirm that narration, pointer movement and system sounds are present as intended.
- Choose a recognizable filename and save a master copy before creating a smaller sharing export.
- Review the frame for private messages, account details or notifications that were visible during capture.

The recording contains the wrong area
Stop and start again with Record Selected Portion, then resize the selection before recording. Capturing only the needed area is more reliable than trying to hide unrelated content afterward.

The clip needs more than a trim
Move the file from QuickTime into iMovie when you need titles, voiceover, transitions, speed changes, picture-in-picture, split-screen or green-screen effects. Use a multitrack editor when independent audio and camera tracks are central to the project.
You need a link instead of a file attachment
Use a browser-sharing workflow such as Screen Studio’s link feature, or upload the exported file to the service already approved for your audience. Confirm the link’s access settings before sending it.
Which Mac screen recorder should you use?
- Fastest built-in recording: Screenshot with Shift–Command–5.
- Quick review and a basic edit: QuickTime Player.
- Titles, effects and a full timeline: iMovie.
- Scenes and audio mixing: OBS.
- Separate screen, camera and audio tracks: Camtasia.
- Automatic Mac-native polish and share links: Screen Studio.
For most short demonstrations, start with Screenshot, select the microphone in Options, and finish the clip in QuickTime or iMovie. Move to a specialized recorder only when you need configurable scenes, separate tracks, automatic presentation treatment or link-based delivery.
