For a 24/7 YouTube Live broadcast, start with RTMPS, H.264, constant bitrate (CBR), progressive video, and a 2-second keyframe interval. Choose resolution and bitrate to match sustained upload capacity, leaving about 20% bandwidth headroom. For a simple, low-motion scene, 1080p at 30 fps is a reasonable starting point—not a special YouTube preset. Most importantly, YouTube may not archive a stream that runs longer than 12 hours, so keep a local recording if a complete replay matters.
Recommended baseline settings
YouTube’s encoder values are general recommendations by codec, resolution, and frame rate; they are not a guaranteed profile for every continuous broadcast. This practical baseline favors broad compatibility and steady operation:
- Protocol: RTMPS, when your encoder supports it. YouTube recommends it as the secure extension of RTMP. See YouTube’s live encoder settings.
- Video codec: H.264 is a broadly usable choice. YouTube also lists H.265/HEVC and AV1 as supported RTMP/RTMPS ingest codecs; use the bitrate guidance for the codec you select.
- Rate control: CBR (constant bitrate).
- Keyframes: Set an interval of 2 seconds; do not exceed 4 seconds.
- Video format: Progressive scan and square pixels.
- Frame rate: Up to 60 fps. Use 30 fps for a comparatively low-motion scene unless you have a reason and enough bandwidth for 60 fps.
- Color: Rec. 709 for SDR.
- Audio: AAC or MP3. YouTube’s advanced guidance lists 128 Kbps for stereo at 44.1 kHz, or 384 Kbps for 5.1 at 48 kHz.
YouTube’s encoder settings page automatically detects resolution and frame rate by default. Manual selection requires a custom stream key with manual settings enabled, so avoid forcing those values unless your workflow needs them.
Choose resolution, frame rate, and bitrate together
The table gives YouTube’s published minimum and recommended incoming video bitrates. These are configuration recommendations, not a guarantee of quality or a mandatory bitrate for every program. The values below are in Mbps.

| Resolution and frame rate | AV1/H.265 minimum | AV1/H.265 recommended | H.264 minimum | H.264 recommended |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| 1080p at 30 fps | 4 | 10 | 5 | 14 |
| 1080p at 60 fps | 4 | 12 | 6 | 17 |
| 720p at 30 fps | 2 | 6 | 3 | 8 |
| 720p at 60 fps | 2 | 6 | 3 | 8 |
| 1440p at 30 fps | 5 | 15 | 7 | 21 |
| 1440p at 60 fps | 6 | 24 | 8 | 34 |
| 2160p at 30 fps | 8 | 30 | 11 | 42 |
| 2160p at 60 fps | 10 | 35 | 14 | 50 |
For a simple, comparatively low-motion scene, 1080p30 can be a sensible starting point if your encoder and connection can sustain the recommended bitrate. YouTube’s current encoder guidance specifies 5 Mbps minimum and 14 Mbps recommended for 1080p30 H.264; for 1080p60 H.264 it specifies 6 Mbps minimum and 17 Mbps recommended. For 1080p30 AV1/H.265, it specifies 4 Mbps minimum and 10 Mbps recommended. These are YouTube technical settings published in its guidance, accessed in 2026—not a YouTube-mandated 24/7 preset.
Higher resolution or frame rate can preserve more detail or smoother motion, but it also raises bandwidth and encoding demands. Match the profile to the content and the upload capacity you can sustain continuously; do not select a higher setting just because the encoder offers it.

Calculate upload headroom before going live
YouTube says the total stream bitrate must fit within available upload bandwidth and recommends leaving about 20% spare capacity. Measure upload speed on the connection that will carry the broadcast, rather than relying on its download speed. Other devices and traffic on a shared network can reduce what is available to the encoder.
- Choose the intended resolution, frame rate, codec, and video bitrate from the table.
- Add audio bitrate and any other stream bitrate to estimate the total outbound load.
- Check that sustained upload capacity exceeds that total by approximately 20%.
- If using a backup feed, account for primary and backup traffic plus the headroom; YouTube specifically advises allowing for both feeds when a backup is operating.
- Test on the actual broadcast connection with representative movement and audio, then review YouTube’s stream health messages.
A hardware encoder is optional. YouTube supports both streaming software and hardware encoders, and recommends professional-grade hardware encoders for higher-production-value events; its settings guidance does not require dedicated hardware for continuous streaming.

RTMPS or HLS?
Use RTMPS for a standard RTMP-compatible workflow. HLS is a supported alternative for particular encoder and codec workflows, including HDR use cases, but it introduces higher latency because it sends video in segments. YouTube’s documented HLS requirements include TS segments 1–4 seconds long, a rolling playlist with no more than five outstanding segments, and HTTPS POST/PUT. Choose HLS when a required capability or encoder workflow calls for it, not as an assumed reliability upgrade. See YouTube’s protocol and encoder requirements.
Plan for the 12-hour archive and DVR limit
A stream can remain live while its replay behavior is uncertain. YouTube says a stream under 12 hours can be automatically archived, but “If your stream exceeds 12 hours, it may not be captured at all.” YouTube also warns that DVR, which lets viewers pause or rewind, may be limited or unavailable on streams longer than 12 hours. These are archive and playback caveats, not encoder bitrate limits. See YouTube’s live stream archive guidance and DVR guidance.

- Please Note: To reach 10Gbps speed, keep the cable under 3.3 ft. For USB A Male to USB C adapters, try flipping the USB C connector. USB C Male to USB A adapters support bidirectional 10Gbps transfer within 3.3 ft
- Keep a local recording if the full broadcast must be preserved.
- Verify that the local file is growing during the stream and that you can access it afterward.
- If viewers need replays, plan to publish usable shorter recordings separately rather than relying on one complete YouTube archive of an unbroken day-long stream.
Test and monitor the actual setup
Settings alone cannot ensure uninterrupted operation. Before depending on a continuous broadcast, test with audio and motion similar to the real program. Confirm that the feed looks and sounds right on the watch page, inspect stream health, and verify both local recording and playback access through the channel and on mobile devices.
If you use YouTube’s backup-feed setup, test failover by stopping the primary encoder or disconnecting its Ethernet connection, then verify that the player rolls over to the backup. Do not assume failover works until you have observed the player change over.

Common problems and fixes
- Stream health reports instability: The connection may not sustain the chosen total bitrate, or shared network traffic may be taking capacity. Measure outbound capacity on the broadcast connection, reduce the stream bitrate or resolution if needed, and preserve the recommended headroom.
- Video looks poor despite meeting a minimum bitrate: Minimum values are not the same as YouTube’s recommended values. Check the codec-specific recommended value for your resolution and frame rate, then test with representative motion.
- Manual resolution or frame-rate selection is unavailable: YouTube’s encoder settings page detects these automatically by default. Manual selection requires a custom stream key with manual settings enabled.
- There is no complete YouTube replay after a long broadcast: A stream exceeding 12 hours may not be captured at all, and DVR may be limited or unavailable. Use the local recording and separate shorter recordings for replay access.
- The backup feed does not take over as expected: Test failover by stopping the primary encoder or disconnecting its Ethernet, and check that the player rolls over before relying on the backup.
