There is no single upload-speed minimum for live streaming. Choose your platform, resolution, frame rate and codec first; then set an encoder bitrate the connection can sustain with spare capacity. A speed test measures your connection, while a bitrate is the amount of data your encoder sends each second. They are related, but they are not the same number.
What upload speed do I need to livestream?
Use the platform’s recommended encoder bitrate as the starting point, then check that your measured upload speed can support it consistently. For YouTube, recommended H.264 settings range from 6 Mbps for 720p to 50 Mbps for 4K/2160p at 60 fps. The appropriate value depends on resolution and frame rate, and YouTube’s recommendation also changes with codec.

OBS suggests using 75% of total upload speed as a practical starting point for stream bitrate. This is a rule of thumb, not a YouTube or Twitch requirement or a guarantee: other devices and applications use bandwidth, and a connection can fluctuate. A fast result from one speed test does not prove that your route to the streaming platform will remain stable.
YouTube recommended encoder bitrates
The figures below are YouTube’s recommended encoder bitrates, not minimum internet-plan upload speeds. YouTube specifies constant bitrate (CBR) and recommends a two-second keyframe interval, not exceeding four seconds. Use the recommendation for your selected codec rather than treating one column as universal. Source: YouTube Help: Choose live encoder settings, bitrates, and resolutions (accessed October 3, 2026).

| Resolution and frame rate | AV1/H.265 | H.264 |
|---|---|---|
| 4K/2160p at 60 fps | 35 Mbps | 50 Mbps |
| 4K/2160p at 30 fps | 30 Mbps | 42 Mbps |
| 1440p at 60 fps | 24 Mbps | 34 Mbps |
| 1440p at 30 fps | 15 Mbps | 21 Mbps |
| 1080p at 60 fps | 12 Mbps | 17 Mbps |
| 1080p at 30 fps | 10 Mbps | 14 Mbps |
| 720p at 60 fps | 6 Mbps | 8 Mbps |
| 720p at 30 fps | 6 Mbps | 8 Mbps |
For example, YouTube recommends 12 Mbps for 1080p60 encoded with AV1 or H.265, and 17 Mbps for 1080p60 with H.264. If you use H.264 at 1080p60, the OBS 75% starting point implies a measured total upload of about 22.7 Mbps or more (17 ÷ 0.75). That calculation is a planning aid, not a promise of stable performance; test the actual connection and leave room for network use outside the stream.
How to check whether your upload is fast enough
- Set the target. Decide where you are streaming, the resolution and frame rate, and the encoder codec. Do not choose a bitrate before these settings are settled.
- Look up that platform’s current bitrate guidance. For YouTube, use the matching row and codec column above. Platform recommendations are settings for the outgoing stream, not ISP speed-plan requirements.
- Measure upload capacity and compare. Run a speed test, then compare its upload result with the planned encoder bitrate. As an initial OBS rule of thumb, keep stream bitrate around 75% of total upload capacity. Treat a single test as a snapshot, especially if other people or devices share the connection.
- Run a representative test stream. Include the usual audio and movement, not just a static screen. YouTube recommends testing before an event and monitoring stream health; Twitch provides Twitch Inspector for bandwidth health testing. See YouTube’s encoder guidance and Twitch Developer documentation.
- Adjust based on what happens. If the stream drops frames, lower the bitrate or test another ingest server where available, then repeat the test. Keep the highest quality setting only if the connection sustains it without drops.
Upload needs for Twitch and other platforms
Twitch
Twitch describes a broadcast as traveling over the internet to an ingest server using RTMP, so a stable route to that server matters as well as the speed-test result. Its indexed Help guidance for 1440p/60 gives 20 Mbps upstream without added server-side transcode support, or 9 Mbps when that support is available. These are conditional figures for that setup, not universal Twitch upload minimums; check current requirements and eligibility in the creator dashboard before relying on them. - DUAL-BAND WIFI 6 ROUTER: Wi-Fi 6(802.11ax) technology achieves faster speeds, greater capacity and reduced network congestion compared to the previous gen. All WiFi routers require a separate modem. Dual-Band WiFi routers do not support the 6 GHz band.
- AX1800: Enjoy smoother and more stable streaming, gaming, downloading with 1.8 Gbps total bandwidth (up to 1200 Mbps on 5 GHz and up to 574 Mbps on 2.4 GHz). Performance varies by conditions, distance to devices, and obstacles such as walls.
- CONNECT MORE DEVICES: Wi-Fi 6 technology communicates more data to more devices simultaneously using revolutionary OFDMA technology
- EXTENSIVE COVERAGE: Achieve the strong, reliable WiFi coverage with Archer AX1800 as it focuses signal strength to your devices far away using Beamforming technology, 4 high-gain antennas and an advanced front-end module (FEM) chipset
- OUR CYBERSECURITY COMMITMENT: TP-Link is a signatory of the U.S. Cybersecurity and Infrastructure Security Agency’s (CISA) Secure-by-Design pledge. This device is designed, built, and maintained, with advanced security as a core requirement.
Twitch’s March 29, 2017 blog recommended 3–6 Mbps for most streams at that time, with higher values for 1080p or demanding games. That is historical guidance, not a current universal limit. Its enduring practical point is that a stable stream at lower resolution or bitrate is preferable to a higher-quality stream that drops frames: Twitch Blog, March 29, 2017.
Simultaneous streaming to more than one destination
There is no established universal upload-speed minimum for multistreaming. The needed capacity depends on whether your setup sends a separate stream to each destination or sends one stream to a relay that distributes it, as well as each output’s bitrate. Calculate from the actual outputs and test the complete setup rather than applying one blanket number.

Why a speed test can look good while a stream drops frames
OBS defines dropped frames as a sign that the connection to the remote server is unstable or cannot keep up with the configured bitrate. A speed test is a short measurement; it may not reveal congestion, interruptions, or instability on the path used by the live stream. Wi-Fi can also be less stable than a wired connection. OBS recommends Ethernet where possible, but a cable can improve the local link; it cannot increase the upload capacity provided by your ISP.
Fix common upload and dropped-frame problems
| Symptom | What to try |
|---|---|
| Dropped frames continue during the stream | Lower the video bitrate and test again. Confirm that the measured upload has headroom for the chosen bitrate and other household or office network use. |
| Performance varies on Wi-Fi | Test over Ethernet if possible. This addresses possible local wireless instability, not a shortage in the ISP’s provisioned upload speed. |
| One ingest server performs poorly | Try another available server and compare with a representative test stream. |
| A VPN or network software is active | Check whether a VPN, network-prioritization tool, or other network software is interfering; test without it where appropriate. |
| Connection issues persist across tests | Check drivers and modem/router connectivity. Restart the modem/router as a troubleshooting step; if OBS’s diagnostics do not resolve the issue, contact your ISP before buying replacement equipment. |
OBS’s troubleshooting guide covers dropped frames, server changes, bitrate reduction, wired networking and possible software interference: OBS Project: Stream Connection Troubleshooting (dated September 30, 2024).
