It means the phone has a nominal 256GB of built-in storage for apps, photos, videos and other files. It does not mean 256GB RAM. For example, realme’s 13 5G page separates its built-in RAM and dynamic RAM figures from the phone’s 256GB ROM. These are different kinds of memory with different purposes.

Nor should you expect all nominal 256GB to be free for your own files. The 16 Pro+ page says software occupies part of internal storage, so usable space is lower than the advertised capacity.
Can you add a memory card?
Support depends on the model. Realme lists storage-card support as unsupported for both the 16 Pro+ 5G and 16 Pro 5G. The 12 5G page, by contrast, describes a dedicated microSD slot and up to 2TB of external memory. A card can expand space for supported files, but it does not turn a lower-capacity phone into a 256GB internal-storage model.

How to choose the right 256GB model
- Verify the exact SKU. Check the full RAM-and-storage combination and model number on the retailer’s listing and, where possible, match it to the realme page for your region. A page listing 256GB does not confirm local stock.
- Check local compatibility and purchase terms. Compare listings in your country and verify unlocked status, supported network bands, SIM or eSIM configuration, warranty coverage and seller reputation. Global and India specifications should not be treated as interchangeable.
- Match the features to your priorities. Compare the listed display, cameras, battery, charging, size and performance characteristics against how you use a phone. Manufacturer specifications describe features; the pages cited here do not provide independent head-to-head performance testing.
- Check card support if expansion matters. The 12 5G lists a microSD slot; the 16 Pro and 16 Pro+ list storage-card support as unsupported. Confirm the exact regional variant before relying on expansion.
- Choose the right screen protector for a 16 Pro model. Realme warns that some colored or darkened protectors may obstruct the hidden light sensor. Look for one confirmed to fit the exact phone and leave the sensor opening clear.
Is 256GB enough?
It depends on how you use the phone: how many large games and apps you install, how much video you record, and whether you keep media offline or back it up elsewhere. The available product specifications do not quantify an individual user’s storage needs. Remember that system software takes some space, and consider whether the specific model’s microSD support matters to your plans.
