Real-Time Voice AI API Benchmark: Key Facts on Cartesia, Deepgram and ElevenLabs (2026)

By Freedom251 Team · · 12 min read

There is no defensible universal winner among Cartesia, Deepgram and ElevenLabs for real-time voice AI. Their published latency figures measure different parts of the request, their prices use different units, and no common independent test covers all three. Cartesia advertises first audio in under 90 ms, ElevenLabs reports about 75 ms for Flash model inference, and Deepgram publishes a worked example with 616 ms time to first byte (TTFB) for a 745 ms request. Those numbers are not interchangeable.

Choose an API by measuring your own workload: first playable audio, completion time, voice quality, language and accent, streaming controls, concurrency, regional performance and total cost. The comparison below explains what each provider documents and gives you a reproducible benchmark plan for 2026.

What the three APIs actually provide

All three services generate speech from text while allowing an application to receive audio before the entire response is rendered. That streaming behavior is what makes a voice assistant feel responsive: the user can hear the beginning of a sentence while later words are still being synthesized.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

The APIs differ in model families, transport options, voice catalogs, language support, pricing meters and the latency metric used in marketing or documentation. Treat the products as developer components rather than interchangeable per-character commodities.

  • Cartesia: Sonic models with streaming output, voice cloning, pronunciation dictionaries and a stated 44-language footprint.
  • Deepgram: Flux TTS, Aura-2 and Aura-1, with REST streaming and a WebSocket interface that exposes encoding, sample-rate, speed and buffer controls.
  • ElevenLabs: Flash/Turbo, v4 Turbo, v4, v3 Conversational, Multilingual v2 and other models, with progressive HTTP streaming and bidirectional WebSockets for text that arrives incrementally.

Feature availability can change by model. A language or voice capability listed for one model should not be assumed for another.

How to interpret “lowest latency”

Latency is a chain of delays, not one universal number. Deepgram expresses the relationship as total_latency = network + ttfb + audio_synthesis. A provider may publish only one term in that equation.

First playable audio

This is the most useful user-facing measure: elapsed time from sending a request until the client has decoded enough audio to play. It includes network transfer, server queueing, model work, chunking and client buffering. Measure it at the same client location and with the same output format for every provider.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Time to first byte

TTFB records when the first audio bytes arrive, not when they can be decoded and heard. Codec headers, packet size and a player’s buffer can make first sound later than TTFB.

Model inference time

ElevenLabs describes Flash at approximately 75 ms of model inference. Its documentation explicitly says that this excludes full end-to-end latency, which varies with endpoint, geography and network conditions.

Vendor-reported figures in context

Provider Published figure What it measures Qualification
Cartesia Under 90 ms first audio Advertised first-audio experience; documentation also describes Sonic 3.5 at about 90 ms to first byte Vendor-reported; confirm model and metric for your deployment
Deepgram 745 ms total request; 616 ms TTFB; 277 ms after subtracting SSL handshake A single worked documentation example Illustrative request, not a typical or cross-provider benchmark
ElevenLabs Approximately 75 ms Flash model inference only Vendor-reported; excludes end-to-end network and client time

Because the definitions and test setups differ, these figures cannot establish which API is fastest. A credible answer requires the same prompts, voice, region, protocol, output encoding and concurrency on all three.

Cartesia: Sonic streaming and credit-based plans

Latency and streaming

Cartesia advertises first audio in under 90 ms. Its documentation overview describes Sonic 3.5 at about 90 ms to first byte. These are vendor claims, and the wording identifies different possible metrics (first audio versus first byte). Record which Sonic version and endpoint you test.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Sonic output is delivered as a stream, so your client can begin playback while synthesis continues. Your measured first playable audio will also depend on chunk size, decoder startup and the amount of buffering you choose.

Voices, languages and controls

The Sonic product material advertises support for 44 languages, voice cloning and pronunciation dictionaries. Confirm the exact language, regional accent, cloning workflow and consent requirements for the model and account you intend to deploy. A language count does not guarantee equal quality or identical controls in every language.

Plans and usage units

Cartesia organizes Sonic around monthly credits rather than a simple public per-1,000-character rate. The pricing page accessed October 13, 2026 lists these self-serve tiers:

Tier Monthly price Approximate Sonic minutes included Other published details
Free $0 Approximately 27 minutes Credit allowance and limits apply
Pro $5/month Approximately 133 minutes Paid overage listed at $65 per million credits
Startup $49/month Approximately 1,667 minutes Paid overage listed at $45 per million credits
Scale $299/month Approximately 10,667 minutes Paid overage listed at $38 per million credits
Enterprise Custom Not stated Contract terms determine included usage and overage

The same page estimates that one minute consumes about 750–800 credits and that one credit equals one character. The minute figures are therefore illustrations based on typical speech density, not guaranteed durations for every script, language or voice. Plan limits, concurrency and overage terms can change; verify them before committing.

Deepgram: multiple TTS models and explicit transport controls

Models and protocols

Deepgram documents Flux TTS, Aura-2 and Aura-1. Applications can use REST streaming or a WebSocket endpoint. The WebSocket reference documents output encodings, sample rates, speed control and buffer commands, which can be useful when you need to coordinate synthesis with a telephony stream or a local playback queue.

What the latency example does—and does not—show

Deepgram’s latency guide presents an example request that took 745 ms in total and reached 616 ms TTFB under its stated setup. Subtracting the SSL handshake in that example leaves a 277 ms first-byte estimate. These are arithmetic components of one documentation example, not a published median, percentile or model-versus-model benchmark. The guide also notes that network path and user location affect the result.

Character pricing

The Deepgram pricing page accessed October 13, 2026 lists these Pay As You Go rates:

Model Pay As You Go Growth rate shown Illustrative cost for 1 million characters
Flux TTS $0.045 per 1,000 characters $0.0405 per 1,000 $45 Pay As You Go; $40.50 at the shown Growth rate
Aura-2 $0.030 per 1,000 characters $0.027 per 1,000 $30 Pay As You Go; $27 at the shown Growth rate
Aura-1 $0.015 per 1,000 characters $0.0135 per 1,000 $15 Pay As You Go; $13.50 at the shown Growth rate

The million-character figures simply multiply the listed per-1,000 rate by 1,000. They exclude any separate product, telephony, storage or contractual charges. Confirm the current model, plan and eligibility for Growth pricing when you build a forecast.

Latency guidance by region

The latency documentation reports example WebSocket TTFB bands of 100–150 ms in North America, Europe and Southeast Asia, and 150–200 ms in South Asia and Northeast Asia. These are vendor guidance ranges, not guarantees. The same documentation’s approximately 75 ms Flash number is model inference only; endpoint selection, network distance, queueing and client buffering add to what the listener experiences.

Model prices

The API pricing page accessed October 13, 2026 lists these per-1,000-character rates:

Model Price per 1,000 characters Cost for 1 million characters at the listed rate
Flash/Turbo $0.04 $40
v4 Turbo $0.04 $40
v4 $0.08 $80
v3 Conversational $0.04 $40
v3 $0.08 $80
Multilingual v2 $0.08 $80

These calculations use the published character rate only. Your account plan, voice features and any additional product usage can alter the bill, so verify the selected model and terms before publishing a cost estimate.

Pricing comparison: why headline rates mislead

Deepgram and ElevenLabs expose straightforward per-1,000-character figures, while Cartesia bundles credits, estimated minutes, concurrency and tiered overages. A fair comparison converts your expected monthly text into each provider’s billing unit.

Step 1: measure text, not minutes

Count the characters actually sent, including spaces and punctuation according to the provider’s billing definition. Keep separate totals for short assistant replies, long-form narration and repeated prompts. Character distribution matters more than an average word count when your workload includes markup or pronunciation annotations.

Step 2: model Cartesia credits

Using the published one-credit-per-character description, a 1 million-character workload is approximately 1 million credits. Compare that demand with the tier’s included credits and then apply the listed overage rate if applicable. Do not infer a guaranteed number of spoken minutes from the 750–800 credits-per-minute estimate; your language, speaking rate and punctuation can change duration.

Step 3: include fixed and variable costs

For each candidate, record subscription fees, included credits or characters, overage rates, concurrency limits, and any charges for a voice, agent, telephony or storage feature you actually use. A low per-character rate can lose its advantage if your selected plan cannot sustain peak concurrency or if you need a separately priced capability.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Voice quality, language and cloning decisions

Language and accent coverage

Cartesia advertises 44 languages. ElevenLabs publishes language and feature counts by model rather than one universal number. Deepgram’s model documentation should be checked for the language and voice combination you need. Test the precise target accent, names, dates, abbreviations and code-switching patterns; a broad language count is not a substitute for pronunciation results.

Cloning and consent

If you clone a voice, evaluate the provider’s identity verification, consent record, storage and deletion controls before collecting recordings. Keep a written authorization trail and define who can invoke the cloned voice. The technical ability to clone does not establish that a particular voice use is legally or ethically permitted.

Prosody and pronunciation

Prepare a test script containing proper nouns, numbers, currency, acronyms, punctuation-heavy sentences and emotional turns. Compare naturalness and pronunciation separately. A voice that sounds pleasant in a short greeting may mishandle a long paragraph or a specialist vocabulary.

Streaming and integration choices

REST streaming

REST streaming is straightforward for request-response applications: send a complete prompt, read chunks, and close the response. It is often easier to observe and retry, but it may not be ideal when text arrives continuously from another model.

What’s actually slowing this PC down?

Pick the symptom - the matching free tool is one click away.

WebSockets

WebSockets keep a connection open and can reduce setup overhead for successive turns. Deepgram exposes buffer and output controls, while ElevenLabs supports bidirectional text input. Measure connection establishment separately from steady-state TTFB so a warm-session result is not mistaken for a cold-start result.

Playback buffering

Do not play every tiny chunk immediately. Too little buffering causes clicks or underruns when packets arrive unevenly; too much buffering increases perceived delay. Record the buffer threshold in your benchmark and keep it identical across providers.

Audio format

Fix codec, sample rate, channel count and chunk framing before comparing. A provider can appear faster simply because it returns smaller or easier-to-decode chunks. Use the format your production client will actually consume, especially when the destination is a phone call or browser audio element.

A reproducible three-provider benchmark

The following procedure produces evidence you can defend instead of repeating vendor marketing numbers.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.
  1. Define workloads. Create short conversational replies, long paragraphs, multilingual samples and texts containing names, numbers and acronyms. Keep the exact strings under version control.
  2. Lock model and voice IDs. Record provider, model, voice, language, pronunciation settings and any cloning configuration. Do not switch models between runs.
  3. Fix the client environment. Use the same machine class, runtime version, network region, DNS path, audio format and streaming mode. Note whether the connection is cold or reused.
  4. Set concurrency levels. Test one request, a normal production burst and your expected peak. Record rate-limit responses, queueing and connection failures.
  5. Timestamp every stage. Capture request start, connection established, first byte, first decodable chunk, first playable audio, final byte and playback completion.
  6. Repeat enough times for distributions. Report median, p95 or p99, minimum, maximum and failure count. A single fast run is not a latency result.
  7. Calculate real-time factor. Divide generation time by resulting audio duration. A 500 ms response that produces 200 ms of audio is different from one that produces 20 seconds.
  8. Blind the listening test. Normalize loudness, randomize provider order and hide labels. Ask listeners to score naturalness, pronunciation, pacing and interruptions separately.
  9. Compute cost from the same text. Apply current character or credit rates, subscription inclusion, overage and any required add-ons. Show assumptions and the access date.
  10. Publish the setup with the result. Include region, software version, model and voice IDs, prompt lengths, concurrency, output format, number of repetitions and error handling so another team can reproduce it.

Report first playable audio separately from full completion. A service can win one metric and lose the other without contradiction.

Reliability, operations and compliance checks

Concurrency and quotas

Ask each provider for the maximum simultaneous streams, burst behavior, quota-reset policy and upgrade path. A plan’s included minutes or low unit price is irrelevant if your workload is throttled during peak traffic.

Regional performance

Run tests from every region where users will speak. ElevenLabs publishes materially different example TTFB bands by geography, and Deepgram notes network and location effects. Do not extrapolate a North American measurement to Asia or Europe.

Failure handling

  • Set a deadline for first playable audio and a separate deadline for completion.
  • Retry only idempotent requests, with exponential backoff and a cap.
  • Keep partial audio handling explicit: either play what arrived or discard it and restart.
  • Log provider error codes, close reasons, response headers, model IDs and request IDs.
  • Define a fallback voice or provider only after verifying that the fallback’s language and consent requirements match.

Data residency and retention

For regulated or confidential speech, confirm where text and audio are processed, how long request data is retained, whether logs can be disabled and which enterprise controls are contractual. These terms are account- and region-specific and should be reviewed with your compliance team.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Which API fits common projects?

Interactive assistants where first sound is the priority

Start with the provider whose documented streaming behavior and regional endpoint are closest to your users, then verify first playable audio in your own test. Cartesia’s under-90 ms first-audio claim and ElevenLabs’ Flash inference claim are reasons to benchmark them, not proof that either will win end to end.

Telephony or tightly controlled audio pipelines

Deepgram’s documented WebSocket controls for encoding, sample rate, speed and buffers can simplify integration when your application must match a telephony stream. Confirm codec compatibility and measure packet timing through the complete call path.

Applications that receive text incrementally

ElevenLabs bidirectional WebSockets and Deepgram WebSockets are candidates when text arrives token by token or sentence by sentence. Cartesia’s streaming Sonic output can also fit incremental playback; test how each service handles partial text, revisions and cancellation.

Large, predictable character volumes

Deepgram and ElevenLabs make per-character arithmetic easy, while Cartesia may be attractive when a credit tier’s included minutes and concurrency match your demand. Calculate a full month at your expected volume, including overage, instead of selecting by the smallest headline number.

Multilingual products and custom voices

Verify the exact model’s language, accent, pronunciation and cloning workflow. Cartesia’s advertised 44-language support and ElevenLabs’ model-specific language information are starting points; only a target-language listening test reveals whether quality meets your standard.

A practical decision framework

  1. Reject any model that fails a hard requirement. Remove candidates lacking your language, audio format, consent workflow, region or concurrency.
  2. Run the latency test. Rank first playable audio and p95 completion separately, using production-like prompts and a warm and cold connection.
  3. Run the quality test. Score pronunciation, prosody, naturalness and long-form stability with blinded listeners.
  4. Price the winning candidates. Use the same monthly character count, plan inclusion and overage assumptions. Include fixed fees and required add-ons.
  5. Stress reliability. Increase concurrency until throttling or errors appear, then record the sustainable rate and recovery behavior.
  6. Choose with explicit weights. Document how much latency, quality, cost, reliability and compliance each product contributes. Re-run the review when a model, plan or region changes.

This process can produce a project-specific winner. It cannot turn differently defined vendor figures into a universal ranking.

What the published evidence supports in 2026

As of the pricing pages accessed October 13, 2026, Cartesia’s self-serve Sonic plans range from free to $299 per month before enterprise terms, with approximately 27 to 10,667 included minutes and tiered credit overages. Deepgram lists $0.015 to $0.045 per 1,000 characters for Aura-1, Aura-2 and Flux TTS on Pay As You Go, with lower Growth rates shown. ElevenLabs lists $0.04 or $0.08 per 1,000 characters depending on model.

Those prices are snapshots, not guarantees of future billing. The official pages reviewed do not establish a shared independent latency or quality benchmark. Use the figures as planning inputs, label them as vendor-reported or illustrative, and publish your own test conditions when you make a performance claim.
