Real Insurance Standard is an Australian pet insurance policy for cats and dogs that reimburses up to 75% of eligible veterinary expenses, subject to limits and exclusions. It can help with some unexpected vet bills, but it is not full reimbursement: owners may need to pay the vet upfront and cover the balance themselves. Whether it suits you depends on the current policy wording, your pet’s eligibility and your ability to absorb those costs.
How Standard cover works
The Hollard Insurance Company’s Target Market Determination (TMD), effective 31 March 2026, describes Standard as partial reimbursement of eligible veterinary expenses. It pays up to 75%, subject to policy terms, the annual benefit limit and applicable sublimits. See the official TMD and check the current Product Disclosure Statement (PDS) for contractual terms.

CHOICE’s review lists an annual benefit limit of up to $12,000 and a $0 excess. Those are review-page summaries, not a substitute for the policy schedule or PDS; confirm the terms that apply to your quote. CHOICE’s accessible review does not disclose a current premium or its member-only Expert Rating, so neither can be assessed here. CHOICE’s Real Insurance Standard review
The 75% figure is a maximum reimbursement rate, not a guarantee that every bill will be reimbursed at that rate. Exclusions, sublimits, waiting periods and the annual limit can reduce the accepted amount. For example, if an eligible expense is accepted in full and no other limit applies, a 75% benefit leaves 25% for the owner; the actual claim payment depends on the policy’s assessment.

What may be covered—and what is limited
CHOICE lists a range of illnesses and injuries as covered, including cancer, ear and eye conditions, foreign-object ingestion, heart and joint conditions, hereditary conditions, patella luxation, intervertebral disc disease, skin conditions and vaccinatable conditions. Coverage remains subject to the policy’s terms, waiting periods and exclusions.
Specified injuries
CHOICE lists specified injuries with no waiting period. The listed events include motor-vehicle incidents; burns or electrocution; reactions to insect or arachnid bites; bone fractures; snake-bite toxicity; traumatic ligament or tendon injuries; bite or fight wounds; lacerations or abrasions caused by external violence; and near drowning. The scope of eligible treatment and any other applicable conditions must be confirmed in the PDS.

Consultations and condition sublimits
CHOICE lists consultations up to $300, tick paralysis up to $1,000, and cruciate ligament treatment up to $2,600 in NSW, Queensland, South Australia, Tasmania and Victoria, or up to $3,200 in the ACT, NT and WA. These are regional figures reported by CHOICE; the official TMD confirms that consultations, tick paralysis and cruciate ligament conditions are subject to sublimits, but does not specify those amounts. Check the current PDS for the limits that apply to your pet and location. The TMD also identifies emergency boarding as a sublimited category.

CHOICE lists a 30-day waiting period for illness and six months for cruciate ligament conditions, alongside no waiting period for its specified-injury category. Confirm the current PDS for exact definitions, exclusions and how waiting periods apply to a particular claim.

Age eligibility is not presented identically across the sources. CHOICE lists entry from eight weeks and a maximum new-cover age of eight years. The TMD describes the target market as pets over eight weeks and younger than nine years when a policy first commences. Because these descriptions differ, ask the insurer to confirm eligibility for your pet before applying; do not assume an animal near the upper age threshold qualifies.
What the policy does not appear designed to cover
The TMD says Standard is not designed for customers seeking total reimbursement or cover for preventative treatment and general pet-maintenance costs such as grooming and pet food. It also places chronic pre-existing conditions outside the target market.

Plan for the possibility of paying veterinary expenses upfront and waiting for reimbursement. The TMD says GapOnly may reduce the amount paid upfront to the gap payment when the service is available and used. CHOICE lists claims via a customer web portal, an e-claim submitted by a vet, GapOnly at participating practices, or a paper form. Its listing gives GapOnly operating hours as Monday to Saturday, 8am–10pm AET, excluding NSW public holidays; check current availability and hours with the insurer or clinic before relying on them.

Your out-of-pocket amount can include the portion not reimbursed, expenses above a sublimit or annual limit, and costs from an excluded or ineligible treatment. The TMD also says customers in the target market can afford premiums that may increase year to year, upfront vet costs unless GapOnly is used, and expenses above the accepted claim amount.

The Hollard Insurance Company Pty Ltd makes the TMD and is identified as the insurer. The document says PetSure acts for Hollard under binding authority, while Real Pet Insurance policies are promoted and distributed by Greenstone Financial Services, with authorised distribution partners also involved. The TMD describes online, phone and comparison-tool distribution.
The TMD states: “This TMD does not provide any financial product advice on the product and does not take into consideration the objectives, financial situation and needs of individual customers.” Treat the document as a description of the product’s target market, not individual advice.

How to decide whether Standard fits
Compare the policy with your pet’s needs and your ability to pay costs that are not reimbursed. The TMD describes a trade-off: lower benefit percentages or sublimits may mean lower premiums but higher costs after a claim; higher benefits or sublimits may mean higher premiums and lower out-of-pocket costs.
- Check the current PDS and policy schedule for the annual limit, reimbursement percentage, excess and all sublimits.
- Confirm your pet’s age and other eligibility details directly before applying.
- Review waiting periods, pre-existing-condition rules, exclusions and the treatment categories you are most concerned about.
- Consider whether you can pay a vet bill upfront and cover the portion not accepted, even if you expect to use GapOnly.
- Obtain a current quote for your pet; the available review does not establish a premium or rating.
Standard may be worth considering if partial help with eligible unexpected veterinary expenses is what you want and you can manage the remaining costs. It is a poor match if you need full reimbursement, routine-care cover, cover for chronic pre-existing conditions, or insurance for an animal other than a cat or dog.
