Real Insurance Premium is a pet insurance policy for cats and dogs, not a quoted premium price. CHOICE describes it as limited injury and comprehensive illness cover. Its review lists up to 80% reimbursement and a $12,000 annual benefit cap, but sub-limits, exclusions and uncovered costs can still leave you paying a substantial share of a vet bill. The public review page does not disclose its members-only scores or establish an individual premium.
What Real Insurance Premium covers
CHOICE’s review, accessed in 2026, lists a maximum annual benefit of $12,000 and payment of 80% of the vet bill per claim, with a $0 excess. The Hollard Insurance Company and PetSure target market determination (TMD), dated 31 March 2026, also describes up to 80% of eligible veterinary expenses, capped at $12,000 per policy period. These are limits on eligible benefits, not a promise that every bill will be reimbursed at that rate or in full. CHOICE’s Real Insurance Premium review and the Hollard/PetSure TMD are the relevant documents to check.

Injury and illness have different waiting periods
CHOICE says specified injury events have no waiting period, while comprehensive illness cover has a 30-day waiting period. It lists a six-month waiting period for cruciate ligament conditions. The phrase “limited injury” matters: the review describes cover for specified events, not every accident. Check the current policy wording for the covered events and the date from which waiting periods apply.
Age and pre-existing conditions
CHOICE lists eligibility for new cover from 8 weeks through 8 years of age. It also says a pre-existing condition may be covered if it is temporary, fully cured and the pet has been symptom-free for 18 months. That is a conditional rule, not assurance that a specific condition or claim will qualify; confirm the definition and assessment process in the current policy documents.

Sub-limits and exclusions that affect a claim
The CHOICE review lists the following amounts and regional distinctions. They are review-page specifications accessed in 2026; confirm them against the current Product Disclosure Statement (PDS) and quote before relying on them.
| Item | Limit listed by CHOICE | What to check |
|---|---|---|
| Vet consultations | Up to $300 | How the consultation limit is applied and what counts as an eligible consultation. |
| Cruciate ligament treatment | $3,200 in ACT, NT and WA; $2,600 in NSW, Queensland, South Australia, Tasmania and Victoria | Which treatment costs count toward this sub-limit and how it interacts with the policy cap. |
| Tick paralysis | Up to $1,200 | Applicable conditions, exclusions and claim requirements. |
The review also lists behavioural conditions and dental or oral health conditions among exclusions, while noting some limited routine-care options. The TMD says sub-limits can also apply to emergency boarding. Read the current PDS for the full exclusions, eligible expenses and any optional benefits; a summary review is not a substitute for the contract.
What the cover means for your out-of-pocket costs
The TMD says the product is intended to contribute toward eligible veterinary expenses, reducing—not covering in full—the customer’s treatment cost. You may need to pay the vet bill upfront unless the clinic supports GapOnly, and you remain responsible for costs above an accepted claim, as well as expenses that are excluded or exceed a sub-limit. The $12,000 cap is a maximum benefit, not a target reimbursement or guaranteed payout.

It is not aimed at customers seeking cover for chronic pre-existing conditions, every accident or illness, total reimbursement, or preventative and general pet ownership costs.

How to decide whether it fits your pet
- Get a current quote for your pet. The sources do not establish an individual premium. The price you are offered is more useful than an assumed or generalized figure.
- Check eligibility and timing. Confirm your pet’s age eligibility and ask how waiting periods and pre-existing-condition assessments apply to its history.
- Read the current PDS alongside the quote. Verify the annual or policy-period cap, reimbursement basis, excess, sub-limits, covered events, exclusions and any routine-care options.
- Ask your veterinary clinic about claims. Confirm whether it supports GapOnly if you want to know whether you can avoid paying the full eligible bill upfront; this does not change what the policy ultimately accepts.
- Compare alternatives on the same basis. Use identical pet details and quote dates, then compare premium, reimbursement percentage, cap, sub-limits, excess, waiting periods, pre-existing-condition rules, exclusions and clinic arrangements. The available information does not support ranking this policy against competitors.
What CHOICE’s review does—and does not—tell you
CHOICE labels the cover “Limited injury and comprehensive illness cover for cats and dogs,” but its Expert Rating, cover score and out-of-pocket score are members-only. No score or public endorsement can be inferred from the information visible on the review page. The Hollard/PetSure TMD provides information about the intended market and broad cover structure, but it is not a personalized quote or a complete replacement for the current PDS.
