Neither ordinary reading nor commercial brain-training apps has been shown to be a universal winner for general cognitive skills. The more useful choice depends on the ability you want to improve. Reading-focused interventions have the clearest evidence for reading outcomes, especially in early education. Brain-training programs can improve performance on the games or closely related tasks, but broad gains in memory, general cognition, or everyday functioning remain limited or uncertain.
Which is more useful for cognitive skills?
The honest answer is target-specific rather than a ranking. If your goal is reading comprehension, decoding, vocabulary, or understanding written information, reading practice is the direct intervention. If your goal is performance on a particular memory, attention, or processing-speed task, a structured digital exercise may improve that task or a very similar one. Neither activity has reliable evidence as a general-purpose cognitive enhancer for healthy adults.

That distinction matters because studies often measure two different outcomes:
- Near transfer: improvement on the practiced task or a similar test, such as a working-memory exercise improving another working-memory test.
- Far transfer: improvement in a different ability, such as an app game improving reasoning, reading comprehension, job performance, or everyday independence.
Near-transfer improvements are common enough in both literatures to be plausible. Far-transfer claims are much harder to establish, and the evidence summarized here does not support promising broad benefits from either leisure reading or commercial brain-training apps.

What reading can improve
Reading interventions in early education
The clearest positive reading result comes from structured instruction rather than unstructured leisure reading. A 2023 meta-analysis of digital technologies used in Tier 1 early-reading interventions combined 568 effect sizes from 72 studies involving 60,890 participants. Compared with traditional teaching methods, the average effect was Hedges’ g = 0.37, a small positive effect (Vanbecelaere and colleagues, 2023).
These programs targeted early literacy in school instruction. They may include explicit practice in skills such as letter-sound relationships, decoding, fluency, or comprehension, with teacher supervision and a defined curriculum. The result should therefore be read narrowly: technology-assisted reading instruction can help children learn to read. It is not a trial of adults reading novels, articles, or news for general mental fitness.
What digital-reading reviews show about age and study design
A systematic review of digital reading interventions found that most participants were children or adolescents; the median participant age was 8.6 years. Interventions and sample sizes varied widely, and only a minority of studies were large enough to detect small effects reliably. That age distribution limits any attempt to generalize the findings to adults or to everyday reading done without instructional support.

Reading is also a bundle of skills. A person can become better at decoding unfamiliar words without improving text-level comprehension, or read more quickly without retaining more information. A useful reading claim must specify the population, the reading task, the format, and the outcome that was measured.
Paper and screen are not interchangeable in every task
A meta-analysis comparing paper and screen reading found an average performance difference favoring paper: the effect for screen relative to paper was g = −0.25. The difference was concentrated in expository text rather than narrative text. This finding concerns reading performance and format, not reading versus brain training. It suggests that readers working through dense explanations may want to test paper or a distraction-free display, but it does not show that paper reading improves general cognition.
What ordinary leisure reading can reasonably do
Reading naturally exercises language-related processes: recognizing words, integrating sentences, maintaining information across a passage, and using prior knowledge. Those are genuine cognitive activities, but exercising a process during reading is not the same as proving a lasting, transferable improvement outside reading. The evidence summarized here does not provide a reliable effect size for casual adult reading on memory, processing speed, attention, or everyday functioning.
Reading may still be the practical choice when the desired outcome is intrinsically tied to reading. Someone preparing for an exam, learning technical vocabulary, or trying to understand longer articles gets direct practice in the exact activity that matters. That is a goal match, not evidence that reading is a universal brain-training method.

What brain-training apps can improve
Commercial programs in older adults and people with mild cognitive impairment
A 2021 systematic review and meta-analysis examined 43 studies with 2,636 participants, including healthy older adults and older adults with mild cognitive impairment. Commercial brain-training programs produced small significant near-transfer effects in both groups (Nguyen, Murphy, and Andrews, 2021).
The far-transfer pattern was much weaker. No far-transfer effect was observed for the mild-cognitive-impairment group. Among healthy older adults, a small effect appeared for subjective rather than objective far-transfer measures. After adjustment for publication bias, processing speed was the only analyzed domain that remained significant. The authors concluded that there was insufficient empirical evidence to support improvements in memory, general cognition, or everyday functioning.
Those findings apply to the populations and named commercial programs included in that review. They do not prove that every app is ineffective, nor do they validate claims aimed at younger adults, people with neurological conditions, or users of a different product. They do show why an advertisement promising a sharper mind in every area goes beyond the measured evidence.
Working-memory training and the transfer problem
A meta-analysis of 87 publications containing 145 experimental comparisons found that working-memory training improved performance on similar verbal and visuospatial working-memory tasks. Against treated control groups, however, it found no convincing far transfer to nonverbal ability, verbal ability, word decoding, reading comprehension, or arithmetic (Melby-Lervåg, Redick, and Hulme, 2016).

In practical terms, becoming skilled at remembering the type of sequence used in an exercise does not automatically mean that you will remember a shopping list, follow a meeting, or solve unrelated problems better.
Computerized cognitive training in healthy older adults
A separate meta-analysis of computerized cognitive training in healthy older adults included 52 studies and 4,885 participants. The overall effect was small, Hedges’ g = 0.22, and effects differed by cognitive domain. The authors did not address durability, so the result cannot answer whether any measured improvement remains after training stops (the computerized-training meta-analysis).
Because reading was not the comparison condition, this effect cannot be used to claim that brain-training apps outperform reading. It is evidence about the size and limits of computerized training effects under the studies’ own control conditions.

A clinical app result is not a leisure-app result
An app-based therapy trial involving 21 people with chronic post-stroke central alexia improved accuracy on trained words but did not produce significant gains at the sentence or text-reading level. This is a rehabilitation finding for a specific neurological reading disorder. It illustrates the importance of matching the population and outcome to the claim; it is not evidence that healthy users gain general cognitive ability from an app.
Why there is no simple head-to-head winner
Reading and brain-training studies usually ask different questions, enroll different people, and use different controls. One line of evidence concerns children receiving structured literacy instruction. Another concerns healthy older adults or people with mild cognitive impairment completing commercial exercises. A third concerns post-stroke rehabilitation. Combining these results into one league table would create a comparison the experiments did not make.
Even within one activity, the comparison group changes the interpretation:
- Passive control: participants receive no equivalent activity. A benefit may partly reflect attention, expectation, contact with researchers, or familiarity with testing.
- Active control: participants spend similar time on another activity. This is a tougher test of whether the specific training adds value beyond engagement.
- Treated control: participants receive another intervention, which can reveal whether one method beats an existing treatment rather than no treatment.
Study designers also vary in whether they test the exact practiced task, a similar task, or an unrelated daily-life outcome; whether they test immediately or months later; and whether outcomes are objective tests or participants’ own ratings. A small score increase on a familiar game and a durable improvement in independent living are not equivalent endpoints.
Choose by the cognitive skill you actually want
| Your target | Most defensible activity choice | What to measure | Claim to avoid |
|---|---|---|---|
| Decoding, fluency, vocabulary, or comprehension | Reading material at the right difficulty, or structured literacy instruction when a learner needs explicit teaching | Accuracy, comprehension questions, vocabulary recall, and reading speed on new material | That any reading automatically improves unrelated memory or intelligence |
| Performance on a specific working-memory task | A carefully designed exercise that practices the same type of material | Performance on new versions of the same task, not only the familiar game | That near transfer proves better reasoning, arithmetic, or daily memory |
| Processing speed | A program that measures speed with accuracy and uses comparable, unfamiliar tests | Reaction or completion time together with error rate | That a faster game score means faster real-world decisions |
| Sustained attention | Practice that matches the duration and distraction demands of the real activity | Errors and lapses on an untrained attention task | That short, highly repetitive sessions generalize to every setting |
| Everyday functioning | Practice embedded in the actual routine: planning, medication management, navigation, or work tasks | Observed task completion, independence, and retention over time | That a commercial app score is a substitute for functional assessment |
How to evaluate a reading plan
For a learner who needs reading improvement
- Define the bottleneck. Decide whether the issue is decoding, fluency, vocabulary, comprehension, or endurance. A general “read more” goal is too vague to evaluate.
- Select material at an appropriate level. Use texts that are understandable enough to support meaning while still presenting new words or structures. For children with persistent difficulty, seek structured instruction rather than relying only on independent reading.
- Practice the exact outcome. Pair reading with activities such as retelling, answering questions without looking back, defining new vocabulary, or summarizing the author’s argument.
- Check transfer with unfamiliar text. A passage used repeatedly can show memorization or familiarity. Use a new passage of similar difficulty to see whether the skill carries over.
- Track accuracy and understanding separately. Faster reading with poorer recall is not an improvement in comprehension.
For an adult reading for general mental engagement
Choose books or articles you can sustain attention on and vary the material so that you encounter different vocabulary, structures, and viewpoints. If the practical goal is learning, write a short summary from memory or explain the main idea to someone else. Treat that as a learning strategy, not as proof that leisure reading prevents decline or upgrades every cognitive domain.
How to evaluate a brain-training app
- Identify the stated outcome. Is the app promising a better game score, working memory, processing speed, attention, or everyday functioning? Reject claims that bundle all of these together without separate measurements.
- Ask whether the test is new. Improvement on a repeated game can reflect practice with the interface. Look for independent tasks that resemble the target skill but use unfamiliar items.
- Check the population. Results in healthy older adults, mild cognitive impairment, children, and post-stroke rehabilitation cannot be swapped freely. An app tested in one group may not have evidence in yours.
- Look for an active control. A no-activity comparison cannot show that the app is better than another engaging activity such as reading, classes, or ordinary computer use.
- Check the follow-up period. If a study tests users immediately after training, it cannot establish a lasting benefit. Look for retention weeks or months later.
- Demand a functional outcome for a functional promise. A claim about work, driving, managing finances, or independent living should be tested with those activities or credible measures of them.
- Separate evidence from marketing. Product catalogs, subscription terms, and efficacy claims can change. The existence of a game or a published study does not validate every current feature or advertising statement.
A practical decision framework
Use this sequence before spending time on either option:
- Name the skill in observable terms. “Remember a 12-item list after 20 minutes” is testable; “get smarter” is not.
- Match practice to the situation. Use reading for reading-heavy goals and real-world rehearsal for everyday tasks. Use an app when its exercise genuinely resembles the skill you want to practice.
- Set a baseline. Take an unfamiliar task similar to your goal before starting. Record accuracy, time, and the conditions.
- Use a consistent schedule. Keep session length, difficulty, and distractions reasonably stable so changes are interpretable.
- Retest with new material. Do not count a higher score on identical questions as proof of transfer.
- Decide using a meaningful threshold. Continue only if the change is large enough to matter in your real task and persists after a break.
If a cognitive complaint is sudden, progressive, or interfering with work, safety, or daily independence, an app or reading routine is not a diagnostic solution. Discuss it with a qualified clinician, who can consider sleep, mood, medication, hearing or vision, neurological conditions, and other treatable factors.

Common mistakes and how to correct them
“The score went up, so my cognition improved.”
Repeated exposure can make a person better at the test itself. Correct this by using an untrained version and, when possible, a real-world measure.
“A positive children’s reading study proves adult leisure reading works.”
Age, instruction, supervision, outcome, and baseline ability all differ. Apply the result only to the studied educational context unless adult evidence supports a broader claim.

Post-stroke therapy addresses a diagnosed impairment with a targeted protocol. Healthy users and commercial games are a different population and intervention.
“A small average effect guarantees an individual benefit.”
An average meta-analytic effect can conceal substantial variation. Check the confidence interval, dropout rate, control condition, and whether the outcome matters to you.
“No evidence of far transfer means the activity is useless.”
That conclusion also overreaches. Reading can be valuable for learning and enjoyment, and an exercise can improve the practiced skill. The narrower point is that broad transfer has not been established reliably.
Frequently asked questions
Does reading improve memory?
Reading requires holding and integrating information, and deliberate recall can strengthen learning of the material read. The evidence summarized here does not establish that ordinary reading produces a broad, lasting improvement in memory unrelated to reading.

Do brain-training apps work beyond the games?
They can improve performance on the practiced game and similar tasks. Evidence for far transfer to general cognition, memory, or everyday functioning is limited; in the 2021 commercial-program review, broad benefits were not supported after accounting for publication bias.
Best Value
Should I choose paper or a screen?
For expository text, a meta-analysis found a small average performance advantage for paper over screen (g = −0.25 for screen relative to paper). Narrative reading showed less of this difference. Your device, distractions, eyesight, and task still matter.
Are these findings relevant to children?
Some reading evidence is directly relevant to children because it comes from early-reading instruction. Brain-training findings drawn from older adults should not be generalized to children without child-specific trials.
Can either activity prevent dementia?
The cited evidence does not establish dementia prevention for reading or commercial brain-training apps. Claims about prevention require long-term studies with appropriate clinical outcomes, not only short-term test improvements.
