Red Dead Redemption 2 has 10 Gambler Challenges in story mode. They unlock in order, so you cannot work on a later rank until the current one is complete. The sequence covers poker, blackjack, Five Finger Fillet, and dominoes—not just the three games in this title. Check the active Gambler rank before spending time or money at another table.
This guide gives the exact objective for every rank, the required locations, the rules that matter, and practical ways to handle the luck-heavy requirements. The rewards are in-game items, cash, or Dead Eye experience; they are not real-world winnings.

What you need before starting
- A copy of Red Dead Redemption 2 with access to story mode.
- Enough in-game cash for repeated wagers. Several objectives depend on card or tile distributions, so a failed attempt may mean paying to play again.
- Access to the towns and stations named in the location requirements.
- The patience to complete the ranks in order. Winning a game that belongs to a later rank does not bypass the rank currently shown in your Challenges list.
These requirements apply to the single-player campaign. Red Dead Online has its own poker features and should not be used as a substitute for the story-mode tables listed here.

The Gambler track alternates between games and changes the kind of difficulty you face. Some ranks ask for one ordinary win, some add a location or rule constraint, and the final ranks require consecutive victories. Five Finger Fillet is mainly an execution test; poker, blackjack, and dominoes combine decision-making with random cards or tiles.

The checklist below follows the full ten-rank order described by the RDR2.org walkthrough and its challenges reference, with the reference updated January 9, 2023.
Gambler 1 — Win five hands of poker
Win five poker hands. The wins do not have to be consecutive, and a hand counts in either of two ways:
- You reach the showdown with the strongest five-card hand.
- Every opponent folds, leaving you as the last player in the hand.
Because a fold is a valid win, you do not need a premium hand every time. Raise when the shared cards support your private cards, but avoid treating every pot as a showdown contest. A modest bet can sometimes make cautious opponents leave without forcing you to risk your whole stack.

Gambler 2 — Double down and win the blackjack hand five times
For each counted win, double your wager and still win the hand. The five wins do not need to be consecutive. Doubling down normally gives you one additional card while committing more money, so use it only when the initial total and dealer situation make the risk reasonable.
No starting total guarantees a win. This rank is chance-sensitive: the extra card can improve your total, leave you short, or push you over 21. If the hand fails, simply return to the table and try again rather than assuming the same opening total will produce the same result.
Gambler 3 — Win three games of Five Finger Fillet
Five Finger Fillet asks you to enter a button sequence faster than the opponent. Watch the opponent’s demonstration closely, memorize the order, and prioritize accurate inputs before trying to increase speed. A mistake in the sequence costs more than a cautious pace.
This is the first rank where your execution matters more than the card or tile draw. If you lose, observe the pattern again on the next attempt instead of rushing through a sequence you have not learned.
Gambler 4 — Bust one poker opponent at Saint Denis, Valentine, and Flatneck Station
You must eliminate one opponent at each of three story-mode tables:
- Saint Denis
- Valentine
- Flatneck Station
“Bust” means that opponent loses all of their chips. Merely winning one hand, or leaving the table while an opponent still has chips, does not satisfy the location requirement. Poker at camp does not count for this rank. Plan to stay at each table long enough to pressure one named opponent out of their entire stack, and expect that this can take multiple hands.

- When federal agents threaten his family, former outlaw John Marston is forced to hunt down the gang of criminals he once called friends.
- Experience Marston’s journey across the sprawling expanses of the American West and Mexico as he fights to bury his blood-stained past in the critically acclaimed adventure.
- Also included is Undead Nightmare, the ground-breaking horror story expansion that transforms the world of Red Dead Redemption into an apocalyptic fight for survival against a zombie horde.
- Experience the epic western adventures that defined a generation
Gambler 5 — Win three dominoes rounds without drawing, against two or fewer opponents
Win three dominoes rounds while never drawing a tile in those rounds and while playing against no more than two opponents. Both conditions matter: a round you win after taking a tile is not valid, and a table with more than two opponents does not meet the requirement.
Pay attention to the numbers opponents cannot play. Their forced draws can reveal which ends they are missing, helping you choose legal plays that keep your own hand playable. Even with that information, tile distribution remains a major source of variance, so protect the no-draw condition rather than making a desperate play simply to finish faster.

Gambler 6 — Beat blackjack dealers in Rhodes and Van Horn Trading Post
Win at blackjack at both required dealer locations:
- Rhodes
- Van Horn Trading Post
A win at camp does not count for this rank. The objective is location-bound, so record which town you have completed and travel to the other one. The game itself is the same blackjack format: build a total as close to 21 as possible without exceeding it, while accounting for the dealer’s exposed card.
Gambler 7 — Beat Five Finger Fillet players in Strawberry, Valentine, and Van Horn Trading Post
Win a Five Finger Fillet game against the player in each of these locations:
- Strawberry
- Valentine
- Van Horn Trading Post
As with Gambler 3, the reliable part of the strategy is observation. Let the opponent show the sequence, identify the rhythm of the inputs, and then reproduce it cleanly. The requirement is a win at every named location, not a total number of wins anywhere. Camp matches do not replace these tables.
Quick wins for a faster PC:
Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitchesFind Drivers →Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsFix Now →Gambler 8 — Win three blackjack hands after at least three hits
Win three blackjack hands in which you take at least three additional cards before winning. This is substantially harder to force than a normal blackjack victory because you need a low-value starting hand and several safe draws. A high opening total can make three hits impossible without busting.
Think of this as a variance challenge, not a sequence you can reliably grind on demand. When the initial cards are low enough, take the additional hits and accept that some attempts will bust. If the opening total is already strong, preserving the hand may be sensible, but it will not satisfy this particular rank unless you have taken three or more hits.
Gambler 9 — Win three dominoes games in a row
Win three consecutive dominoes games. Consecutive means that a loss resets the streak; a single victory followed by a defeat does not leave partial progress.

- Dappled Black Thoroughbred
- Talisman & Medallion Gameplay Bonuses

- The Nuevo Paraiso Gunslinger Outfit
Use legal plays to make opponents draw whenever the board position allows it. Watching which numbers they avoid can help you choose ends that reduce their options. Nevertheless, the tile distribution can still break a good run, so budget for repeated attempts and verify that the active rank is still Gambler 9 before continuing after a loss.
Gambler 10 — Win three poker hands in a row
Win three consecutive poker hands. This is the final rank and one of the most luck-dependent requirements because a strong decision cannot control the private cards, community cards, or opponents’ willingness to fold.
Play selectively, take straightforward pots when your hand and the board support them, and avoid turning a marginal hand into an expensive bluff merely to preserve momentum. If the streak breaks, start a new three-hand run; previous wins no longer count toward the current streak.
Poker: rules and a practical approach
RDR2’s poker is a Texas Hold’em variant. Each player receives two private cards. Shared community cards arrive in stages—the flop, turn, and river—with betting rounds around them. At showdown, the best five-card combination wins. You can also win before showdown when every opponent folds.
The standard hand order, from weakest to strongest, is:
- High card
- One pair
- Two pair
- Three of a kind
- Straight
- Flush
- Full house
- Four of a kind
- Straight flush
- Royal flush
For Gambler 1, either a showdown win or a table-wide fold counts. For Gambler 4, the objective changes from winning individual hands to removing an opponent’s entire chip stack at each specified location. For Gambler 10, the same basic poker rules apply, but the three wins must be consecutive.
Because the challenges do not require a particular hand ranking, do not wait only for rare combinations. Strong pairs, made straights, and well-supported draws can win ordinary pots, while a correctly timed bet can end a hand when opponents fold. Keep the location and streak conditions in mind before leaving a table: a win at the wrong table or outside the required streak does not advance the relevant rank.
Blackjack: handling doubles, locations, and multiple hits
The blackjack goal is to approach 21 without going over. The Gambler objectives add three different constraints:
- Gambler 2: double down and win five times.
- Gambler 6: win at Rhodes and Van Horn Trading Post.
- Gambler 8: win three hands after at least three hits.
These are not interchangeable. A win after doubling at camp does not complete the location requirement, and a win at the correct town does not count for the three-hit requirement unless you took at least three cards.
The Tool Desk
Outbyte PC Repair FREEClear out junk files and repair common Windows errorsFree Scan →Outbyte Driver Updater FREEScan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minuteDriver Scan →For ordinary hands, compare your total with the dealer’s exposed card and consider whether another card can improve you without making a bust likely. For Gambler 8, the priority reverses: you need an opening hand that can survive several draws. Starting with low-value cards gives you room to hit, but the outcome remains uncertain. The guide’s advice is therefore probabilistic rather than guaranteed—keep trying when the right kind of hand appears, and do not expect a fixed starting total to produce a fixed result.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone.Five Finger Fillet: make the sequence your advantage
Five Finger Fillet is the most execution-focused part of the Gambler track. The opponent demonstrates a button sequence, and you must reproduce it faster. The same principle applies to Gambler 3 and to all three location wins in Gambler 7.
- Watch the complete opponent demonstration instead of looking away after the first inputs.
- Memorize the order before starting your response.
- Enter the buttons accurately; speed is useful only after the sequence is reliable.
- If you lose, use the next demonstration to learn the pattern rather than mashing through it.
This approach does not remove the need to practice, but it shifts the challenge toward information you can control. Unlike poker and dominoes, the result is not primarily determined by a random deal.
Dominoes: the two ranks hidden outside the title
Dominoes occupy two of the ten Gambler ranks, so skipping them leaves the sequence incomplete.

Gambler 5 adds the stricter conditions of no draws and no more than two opponents. Observe which numbers opponents are forced to draw or avoid; that can indicate which ends of the board they cannot match. The information helps, but it does not eliminate tile luck.
Gambler 9 removes the no-draw rule but adds a three-game winning streak. Use legal plays that make opponents draw when possible, keep track of the streak, and be prepared to restart after a single loss.
Story-mode locations at a glance
| Requirement | Locations | Condition |
|---|---|---|
| Poker opponent knockout (Gambler 4) | Saint Denis; Valentine; Flatneck Station | Knock out one opponent at each location. Camp poker does not count. |
| Blackjack dealer win (Gambler 6) | Rhodes; Van Horn Trading Post | Win at both locations. Camp does not count. |
| Five Finger Fillet win (Gambler 7) | Strawberry; Valentine; Van Horn Trading Post | Beat the player at each location. |
These are story-mode requirements. Do not substitute Red Dead Online tables or locations, and do not assume that a camp game satisfies a town-specific rank.
How to choose your approach
| Challenge type | Main difficulty | Best mindset |
|---|---|---|
| Five Finger Fillet | Sequence execution | Watch, memorize, then prioritize accuracy before speed. |
| Ordinary poker or blackjack wins | Decision-making plus card variance | Take sensible opportunities without expecting a guaranteed result. |
| Dominoes with no draws | Tile distribution and hand management | Read opponents’ missing numbers and protect the no-draw condition. |
| Location-bound ranks | Being at the correct table | Track completed towns separately; camp wins do not substitute. |
| Streak ranks | Maintaining consecutive wins | Play conservatively and restart the streak after a loss. |
The practical trade-off is time and money exposure. Five Finger Fillet can improve mainly through learning the sequence, while card and tile challenges may require repeated wagers because luck can interrupt a good plan. Set aside enough cash to retry, and stop to verify the active rank if a win appears not to register.

Troubleshooting a challenge that does not count
- Check the rank: Challenges unlock sequentially. A later objective cannot progress while an earlier one remains active.
- Check the location: Gambler 4, 6, and 7 each have specific towns or stations. A win elsewhere is not a substitute.
- Check the extra condition: Gambler 2 requires a double-down win; Gambler 5 forbids drawing and limits opponents; Gambler 8 requires at least three hits; Gambler 9 and 10 require consecutive wins.
- Check what “win” means: For Gambler 4, the opponent must lose all chips, not merely lose a hand. For poker generally, a fold-out can count even without a showdown.
- Check the mode: These are story-mode challenges, not Red Dead Online objectives.
- Allow for failed attempts: A broken streak or an invalid draw means you must begin that rank’s required sequence again.
What the rewards represent
Completing Gambler ranks awards in-game benefits such as items, cash, or Dead Eye experience. The challenge track is a progression system inside the game, not a way to earn real-world money. Its value is completion progress and the associated in-game rewards.
