Google Messages can use any of them for different conversations. SMS carries ordinary carrier text messages; MMS is the carrier route for messages with photos, audio or video; RCS is a richer service that can use Wi-Fi or mobile data for high-resolution media, typing indicators, read receipts and enhanced group chats.
RCS only works when the app, provider, region, device and participants support it. When it cannot, Google Messages can fall back to SMS or MMS. The quickest way to know what will happen is to look at the compose bar and send icon in the specific conversation.

The short version: three different message paths
Android does not automatically send every message through the same system. The route is selected for each conversation and sometimes for each message, based on the recipient, the content and the services available to both sides.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:

| SMS | Short Message Service, the traditional carrier text service | Carrier messaging network | Basic text | Works with ordinary carrier text service; no RCS support is required |
| MMS | Multimedia Messaging Service, the carrier multimedia route | Carrier-configured multimedia service | Text with photos, audio, video or other media | Depends on carrier configuration, plan and network availability |
| RCS | Rich Communication Services, an industry-standard rich-messaging protocol | Wi-Fi or mobile data | High-resolution media, typing indicators, read receipts and richer group features | Everyone in the conversation must have compatible RCS service enabled and available |
These names describe the transport or service path. They do not mean that you need a separate “SMS app,” “MMS app” and “RCS app.” Google Messages is one app that can select among them.

What SMS does on Android
Text-only carrier delivery
SMS is designed for ordinary text sent through your mobile carrier. It does not provide a native multimedia channel. If you attach a photo, audio clip or video, Google Messages must use MMS or, when available, RCS instead.
What you will see in the app
Google Messages does not show RCS delivery and read indicators for an SMS conversation. Depending on the conversation and your settings, the compose field identifies the route as a text message, and the send control indicates carrier delivery rather than Wi-Fi or mobile-data RCS.
Practical limits
Do not rely on a single universal character limit for every Android phone. Encoding, the messaging app, the carrier and the destination can affect how long text is handled. A long message may be split into multiple carrier messages or converted to another route. The recipient’s carrier can also apply its own rules.
What MMS adds
Carrier multimedia messaging
MMS extends carrier messaging to include text plus media such as a photograph, audio recording or video. It is still a carrier service, not the same internet-based route as RCS.
Why MMS behavior varies
Carrier configuration matters for MMS. Practical attachment limits, supported media types, compression, delivery behavior and charges are not universal Android rules. A carrier may also require particular network settings for MMS to send or download.
Do not assume that MMS always uses mobile data in exactly the same way as RCS. Android exposes carrier-configured MMS handling, so the details depend on the provider and plan. If an MMS remains pending, check the carrier’s MMS requirements rather than treating the problem as an RCS outage.

Media quality compared with RCS
MMS commonly reduces the size or quality of media to fit carrier rules. RCS can support higher-resolution photos and videos when both sides are using compatible RCS service. The exact result still depends on the messaging app, provider and recipient device.

Richer conversations
RCS is intended to make carrier-style messaging behave more like a modern internet chat service. In an eligible Google Messages conversation it can provide:
- High-resolution photos and videos
- Typing indicators
- Read receipts
- More capable group conversations
- Messages sent over Wi-Fi or mobile data
Those features are conditional, not guaranteed simply because a phone runs Android. RCS is a standard, while the service is implemented by an app and an RCS provider such as a carrier or Google. Different providers can expose different capabilities.
RCS is not automatically available to every Android user
Availability can depend on the messaging app, the carrier or other RCS provider, the country or region, device setup and the RCS status of every participant. A phone may support RCS while a particular contact, group or network does not.
How to tell whether a message will use RCS, SMS or MMS
Google Messages labels the route in the conversation composer. The wording can vary slightly by app version, but Google’s help guidance uses these signals:
Free tools Windows power users keep installed
One-click scans. No signup required.
- Open the conversation in Google Messages.
- Read the compose-field label. “RCS message” indicates that the message is set to use RCS. “Text message” indicates carrier messaging, meaning SMS or MMS depending on the content.
- Inspect the send icon. It can indicate sending over Wi-Fi or mobile data, by SMS, or by MMS.
- Check the message content. Plain text can use SMS when RCS is unavailable; an attachment generally requires MMS or RCS.
- Look for a lock when privacy matters. In an eligible encrypted Google Messages RCS conversation, a lock is displayed on the send button.
This check is more reliable than guessing from the phone model or the contact’s operating system. The same app can use RCS with one person, SMS with another and MMS for a third conversation.

When Google Messages falls back to SMS or MMS
Why fallback happens
RCS requires compatible service across the conversation. Fallback can occur when a participant has RCS disabled, the provider does not support it, the service is temporarily unavailable, the region is not covered, or a group includes someone who cannot use the same RCS service.
Google Messages can then send ordinary text by SMS or send a media message by MMS. The composer and send icon normally reveal the route before you press send.
Fallback is useful, but features disappear
A fallback message can still reach a recipient who lacks RCS, but RCS-specific behavior does not travel with it. SMS and MMS do not provide the same typing indicators, read receipts, high-resolution handling or enhanced group features. Google Messages also does not show RCS delivery and read indicators for SMS.
Android-to-iPhone conversations
RCS between Android and iPhone is available where the necessary support exists, but iPhone availability can depend on the region and carrier. Do not assume that every Android–iPhone conversation is RCS or that it has the same privacy features as an RCS conversation entirely within Google Messages. Check the composer label and the encryption indicator for that specific chat.
Connection, data use and possible charges
RCS uses Wi-Fi or mobile data
RCS sends through an internet connection. Wi-Fi can carry the message without using your cellular data allowance. On mobile data, the message and media count against the data terms of your plan. Your carrier or RCS provider can also apply its own service conditions.
SMS and MMS use carrier messaging
SMS and MMS are handled through the carrier’s messaging service. Whether they are included, limited or charged separately depends on the plan and provider. There is no universal Android price for either service, so verify the terms of your own plan before assuming that a message is free.

Roaming and weak connections
An RCS message needs Wi-Fi or mobile data at the time it is sent. With no usable data connection, it may wait or fall back if your settings allow that behavior. SMS can sometimes work where data does not, because it follows the carrier’s text-messaging path. MMS behavior is more dependent on carrier configuration and network settings.

Encryption and privacy: the important distinctions
Eligible Google Messages RCS chats
Google says: “RCS chats between Google Messages users are end-to-end encrypted by default.” That statement applies to eligible conversations between Google Messages users with RCS enabled. In those chats, Google Messages shows a lock on the send button.
SMS and MMS are not end-to-end encrypted
SMS and MMS do not provide end-to-end encryption. A fallback from RCS to either carrier route therefore changes the privacy properties of the message, even if it remains in the same app and conversation thread.
Not every RCS message has the same encryption
RCS is a standard with multiple implementations, so encryption cannot be inferred from the word “RCS” alone. Google’s FAQ states that RCS chats with iPhone users are not end-to-end encrypted. Check the lock indicator in Google Messages instead of assuming that every RCS conversation has identical protection.
Group chats and media: why one conversation can behave differently
RCS groups
When all participants and providers support compatible RCS, a group can use richer features and higher-quality media. Availability is evaluated for the whole conversation, not just for the sender’s phone.
Mixed-participant groups
If one or more participants cannot use RCS, Google Messages may use standard carrier messaging for the group. The result can be an MMS-based group for media or SMS for text, with fewer indicators and more carrier-dependent media handling. The composer label is the authoritative clue for that group.

Choosing a media route
For a large photo or video, RCS is generally the better route when the conversation supports it because it can preserve more detail. If the recipient lacks RCS, MMS may compress the file or fail under the carrier’s rules. When the media is important, confirm the route before sending and consider a separate sharing method if the conversation remains on MMS.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone.Requirements checklist before troubleshooting
- Google Messages, or another app that supports the desired RCS service, is set as the messaging app.
- RCS is enabled in the app and activated for your number.
- Your device has Wi-Fi or mobile data when attempting RCS.
- Your carrier or RCS provider supports service in your region.
- The recipient’s device, app and provider support RCS for that conversation.
- For a group, every participant is evaluated; one incompatible member can change the route.
- For MMS, carrier settings, network access and plan support are correctly configured.
Troubleshooting by symptom
The composer says “Text message” even though both phones are Android
- Open Google Messages settings and the RCS chats section; verify that RCS is enabled and that activation has completed.
- Ask the other person to check the same setting in their messaging app.
- Confirm that both devices have a supported app, current service configuration and a usable data connection.
- Check whether the region or carrier supports the RCS service being used.
- Return to the conversation and read the composer label again. Android ownership alone does not guarantee RCS.
A photo sends as MMS instead of RCS
The conversation may not have RCS available, or the attachment may be handled by the carrier path because of provider or app rules. Check the send icon and the compose label. If they identify MMS, the carrier’s multimedia limits and configuration apply.
An RCS message is stuck or will not send
- Restore Wi-Fi or mobile data and retry.
- Check whether RCS service is activated in Google Messages.
- Use the conversation’s fallback option, if offered, to send as SMS or MMS.
- If only one contact is affected, ask that person to verify RCS availability rather than changing every phone setting.
MMS will not download or arrives with poor quality
Confirm the carrier’s MMS requirements, network settings and plan support. The carrier may impose media-size or format rules, and compression is normal for this route. These limits are provider-specific, not universal Android specifications.

Read receipts disappeared
First identify the route. Read receipts and typing indicators belong to supported RCS conversations; they are not supplied by SMS and are not a reliable signal after fallback to MMS.
RCS as a standard versus Google Messages behavior
The GSMA Universal Profile, including version 3.1, describes protocol capabilities at the standard level. Consumer behavior is determined by the combination of that standard, Google Messages, the RCS provider, the carrier and regional support. Google’s help documentation is therefore the best guide to what the Google Messages interface shows, while Android’s carrier messaging documentation explains why SMS and MMS handling can be carrier-configured.
This distinction explains why two Android phones can display different options. They may use different messaging apps, providers, carrier configurations or regional service rules even though both support the same broad Android platform.
Which route should you expect in common situations?
| Situation | Likely route | What to verify |
|---|---|---|
| Plain text to a contact with compatible RCS | RCS | The composer says “RCS message” and the send control shows Wi-Fi or mobile data |
| Plain text to a contact without RCS | SMS | The composer says “Text message” |
| Photo to a contact without RCS | MMS | Carrier multimedia support, attachment handling and the send icon |
| RCS chat while offline | Waiting or fallback, depending on settings | Restore data or inspect the offered fallback option |
| Eligible Google Messages users with RCS enabled | RCS with end-to-end encryption by default | Look for the lock on the send button |
| SMS, MMS or an RCS chat with an iPhone user | Depends on support, region, carrier and conversation status | Read the composer and encryption indicator; do not assume |
Common misconceptions to avoid
- “RCS is an Android app.” It is a messaging standard and service path that an app such as Google Messages can use.
- “Every Android phone has RCS.” Device software is only one requirement; provider, region, app and participants also matter.
- “Every message with a photo is MMS.” A supported RCS conversation can carry photos over Wi-Fi or mobile data.
- “MMS always uses mobile data like RCS.” MMS handling is carrier-configured and should be checked with the provider.
- “RCS always has end-to-end encryption.” Encryption depends on the app and participants. Google Messages shows a lock for eligible encrypted chats.
- “There is one universal MMS size limit or price.” Carriers and plans differ, and the app may compress or reject media according to those rules.
How to make the right choice
- Use RCS when the conversation supports it and you want high-resolution media, typing indicators, read receipts or richer groups.
- Use SMS for dependable basic text when RCS is unavailable or you need the carrier text route.
- Expect MMS for carrier-based media when RCS is not available, and account for provider-specific compression, limits and charges.
- Check the route before sending sensitive or important content. A fallback can change both delivery features and encryption.
- Use the lock indicator rather than assumptions when end-to-end encryption is important.
The decisive habit is simple: read the label and send icon in the conversation you are about to use. They tell you whether Google Messages is preparing an RCS, SMS or MMS message, while your carrier and region determine the limits and costs that apply.
