What happened in the two auctions?
Business Standard, carrying a Press Trust of India (PTI) report published October 5, said the RBI conducted two overnight VRRR operations. Together, they accepted ₹2,10,192 crore. The report gives a weighted average rate for the first auction only; it does not state a rate for the second.

The first auction received bids exceeding its notified amount, while the accepted amount was ₹2,00,050 crore. In the second, bids were below the ₹50,000 crore notified amount, and the RBI accepted the full ₹10,142 crore bid amount. These figures are reported by Business Standard’s PTI report; the specific RBI result notice was not independently verified here.
Why did the RBI absorb liquidity?
The stated purpose was to take surplus funds out of the banking system temporarily and help align overnight money-market rates with the repo rate. PTI reported that the RBI had conducted multiple VRRR auctions over the preceding two months for this purpose.

A VRRR auction is a liquidity-management operation, not a policy-rate announcement. The October 5 report does not say the RBI changed the repo rate.
How large was the reported liquidity surplus?
PTI cited RBI data for an estimated banking-system liquidity surplus of around ₹5.16 trillion as of October 4, 2026. This is a dated estimate as reported by PTI, rather than a figure independently checked against the underlying RBI data.

The report attributed the surplus to FCNR(B) deposit mobilization followed by RBI swaps that supplied rupee liquidity to banks, and to month-end government spending, including salaries and pensions. Those are the explanations reported by PTI, not independently established causal findings.
