Check the physical mute control and detachable microphone, confirm the SmartSwitch mode, select the Barracuda as the Windows input, and run Windows’ microphone test. A microphone that records in Windows but fails in Discord, Teams, or Zoom has an application configuration problem; a microphone that fails in both supported modes after permissions, pairing, interference, and driver checks may need a replacement detachable microphone or hardware service.
What the Barracuda V2 Pro microphone system does
The Barracuda V2 Pro has two microphone arrangements. The supplied Razer HyperClear Full Band Mic is detachable. When it is attached, it provides the headset’s external boom microphone; when detached, the headset automatically uses internal beamforming microphones for calls on the go. Razer describes the external microphone as a full-band design intended for clear team communication.

The headset can connect through its USB Type-C wireless dongle using 2.4 GHz HyperSpeed Wireless, or through Bluetooth 6.0. It also has a physical microphone-mute control. Razer says the headset can maintain both wireless connection types and uses SmartSwitch to move between them. A double press of the SmartSwitch button toggles between HyperSpeed Wireless and Bluetooth; the manual describes this as switching between the USB Type-C wireless dongle and Bluetooth audio source.
That combination creates four different failure patterns. A microphone that fails in every mode points to mute state, Windows permissions, the selected input, microphone seating or damage, a driver problem, or headset hardware. A failure limited to USB wireless usually involves the dongle, SmartSwitch mode, Windows’ selected input, a driver, or nearby USB 3.0 interference. Bluetooth-only failures are more often pairing, range, charge, mode, or the Windows Bluetooth input profile. If the Windows test works but one calling app cannot hear you, the operating system is receiving audio and the app is using the wrong device or lacks permission.

Use the symptom to choose the first check
| What you observe | Most useful first checks | What the result means |
|---|---|---|
| No microphone audio over USB wireless or Bluetooth | Release the physical mute, reseat the detachable mic, verify SmartSwitch mode, then run the Windows microphone test | A failure in both modes keeps permissions, input selection, driver problems, microphone damage, and headset hardware in scope |
| Microphone works on Bluetooth but not with the USB dongle | Connect the dongle directly, select the Barracuda input, move it away from USB 3.0 activity, and check the audio driver | The detachable mic and basic headset electronics are less likely to be the cause; concentrate on the 2.4 GHz path and Windows device detection |
| Microphone works with the dongle but not on Bluetooth | Switch to Bluetooth, verify pairing and charge, stay within range, and remove and re-add the Windows Bluetooth device if necessary | The Bluetooth connection or its Windows input profile is the likely fault area |
| Windows records your voice but Discord, Teams, or Zoom does not | Choose the Barracuda microphone in the application and review that application’s microphone permission | The headset and Windows recording path work; the failure is inside the application configuration |
| Windows does not list a Barracuda input at all | Check the connection mode and permissions, then use Device Manager to remove and rediscover the audio device | Windows may have a driver or device-enumeration problem rather than a muted microphone |
1. Check the mute control, microphone seating, and active mode
Clear the physical mute state
Press the headset’s microphone-mute control once and verify that the headset is not indicating an active mute state. A software setting cannot override a physical mute switch, so this check belongs before changing Windows or Discord settings.
Reseat the HyperClear Full Band Mic
Power off or disconnect the headset, remove the detachable HyperClear Full Band Mic, and insert it firmly again. A partially seated boom can leave the microphone electrically disconnected while the headset and speakers continue to work. Inspect the plug and socket for bent parts, cracks, or debris. Do not force the connector; visible damage is evidence for an accessory replacement or service decision later.
Choose the intended wireless path
With the headset powered on and connected to an audio source, double-press SmartSwitch. One position uses the USB Type-C wireless dongle and the other uses Bluetooth. Wait for the connection to settle before testing. If you are troubleshooting USB, make sure the headset is actually on the dongle path; if you are troubleshooting Bluetooth, make sure it has not silently switched back to HyperSpeed Wireless.

2. Select and test the microphone in Windows 11
Windows must use the Barracuda as its recording device before an application can receive its audio. Microsoft’s current supported-Windows path is Windows 11; Microsoft states that Windows 10 support ended on October 14, 2025. The labels below are for Windows 11 and may differ on an unsupported Windows 10 installation.

- Open Settings > System > Sound.
- In the Input section, select the Barracuda V2 Pro microphone rather than a laptop microphone, webcam, monitor, or another headset.
- Open the selected input’s properties and find the microphone test.
- Choose Start test, speak at a normal level, choose Stop test, and play the recorded sample.
- If the sample is extremely quiet, raise Input volume and repeat the test. Keep your normal speaking distance while judging the result.
Microsoft’s guidance is to make the microphone or headset the system default recording device. The recording sample is the key dividing line: audible playback proves that Windows is receiving the Barracuda signal, while a silent sample means you should continue with permissions, mode, connection, interference, and driver checks.
3. Grant Windows microphone permissions
A correctly selected microphone can still be blocked by privacy controls. Open Settings > Privacy & security > Microphone and turn on all three relevant switches:
- Microphone access
- Let apps access your microphone
- Let desktop apps access your microphone
The desktop-app switch matters for traditional Windows programs such as desktop versions of communication software. After enabling the controls, close and reopen the calling application, then repeat the Windows test and the application test. If an organization manages your computer, a policy may prevent you from changing these switches; in that case, an administrator must allow microphone access.
4. Fix microphone problems on USB wireless
Use a direct dongle connection
Remove the wireless dongle from a hub, monitor, keyboard, or docking station and connect it directly to the computer. A hub can introduce power, enumeration, or radio-placement problems that are difficult to distinguish from a headset fault. After reconnecting it, wait for Windows to finish detecting the device and select the Barracuda input again under Settings > System > Sound > Input.
Reduce USB 3.0 interference
Razer specifically warns that nearby USB 3.0 activity can affect the Barracuda’s 2.4 GHz performance. Move the dongle away from an active USB 3.0 port, external drive, hub, or cable bundle. If your computer has ports on opposite sides, use the side with more physical separation from busy USB 3.0 equipment. The purpose is not to change an audio setting; it is to improve the radio environment around the dongle.

Confirm the headset is not still in Bluetooth mode
Use SmartSwitch to return to the HyperSpeed Wireless position, then run the Windows input test. A headset can remain powered and play audio while connected through the other path, making a dongle problem look like a dead microphone.
Rediscover the audio device if Windows loses it
If Windows does not expose a Barracuda recording device after the direct-connection and mode checks, use Microsoft’s Device Manager recovery sequence:
- Right-click Start and open Device Manager.
- Locate the Barracuda or related audio device under the audio-input and output categories.
- Uninstall the affected audio device. Accept the confirmation only for the device you intend to recover.
- Restart Windows.
- Open Device Manager again and use Scan for hardware changes.
- Install any offered driver update, then return to Settings > System > Sound > Input and repeat the microphone test.
This sequence addresses a missing or corrupted Windows device entry. It will not repair a physically broken detachable microphone, so a continued failure in both wireless modes requires the hardware checks below.
5. Fix microphone problems on Bluetooth
Confirm Bluetooth mode and a complete connection
Double-press SmartSwitch to select Bluetooth, then open Windows Bluetooth settings and verify that Bluetooth is enabled and the Barracuda is shown as connected, not merely paired. The headset should have enough charge and remain within normal operating range of the computer. A low battery or an edge-of-range connection can leave playback intermittent or prevent the hands-free input profile from appearing.
Remove and add the headset again
If the device appears but will not connect reliably, Microsoft recommends removing it and adding it again:

- Please Note: To reach 10Gbps speed, keep the cable under 3.3 ft. For USB A Male to USB C adapters, try flipping the USB C connector. USB C Male to USB A adapters support bidirectional 10Gbps transfer within 3.3 ft
- Open Settings > Bluetooth & devices > Devices.
- Find the Barracuda, open its device menu, and choose Remove device.
- Turn Bluetooth off and on again, or restart the computer if Windows does not recover the Bluetooth service.
- Put the headset into Bluetooth pairing mode according to its controls, choose Add device, select Bluetooth, and complete pairing.
- Return to Settings > System > Sound > Input and select the Barracuda’s Bluetooth microphone profile.
Windows can show separate playback and recording profiles for a Bluetooth headset. Selecting a high-quality output profile does not guarantee that the hands-free microphone profile is selected, so verify the input device explicitly after pairing.
Keep other radios and USB 3.0 devices away
Microsoft notes that unshielded USB 3.0 devices can interfere with Bluetooth signals. Temporarily move external drives, hubs, and their cables away from the computer’s Bluetooth antenna area while testing. This is especially useful when the microphone connects but drops out as soon as a nearby USB device becomes active.
Check for Windows and Bluetooth updates
After re-adding the headset, check Windows Update and the computer manufacturer’s Bluetooth-driver updates. An update will not correct a muted headset, but it can resolve a Bluetooth device that pairs without exposing a usable recording profile.
6. Separate a Windows problem from an application problem
Use the Windows recording sample as the boundary between system and application troubleshooting.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitches2Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problems3Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minuteWhen the Windows test is audible
Open the audio settings inside the affected application and choose the Barracuda microphone explicitly. Do not leave the application on Default if Windows has several microphones connected; the default may be a webcam or laptop mic. Check the application’s own microphone permission and restart the application after changing it. Test again in a private call or input meter without changing the headset mode between tests.

When the Windows test is silent
Do not spend time changing Discord, Teams, or Zoom input menus yet. Return to the physical mute and microphone seating checks, verify the correct SmartSwitch path, confirm Windows permissions, and complete the USB or Bluetooth branch above. An application cannot record a signal that Windows itself is not receiving.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone.7. Test for a detachable-microphone or headset hardware fault
Hardware becomes the leading suspect when the microphone fails in the Windows test in both USB wireless and Bluetooth modes after you have confirmed permissions, mode, pairing, radio conditions, and drivers. Inspect the detachable mic again for a damaged plug, bent housing, cuts in the cable, or a loose connection. Test the headset with another compatible computer or phone when possible. A second device helps distinguish a Windows installation problem from a microphone assembly that is not producing a signal.
The Barracuda V2 Pro’s detachable design makes a model-specific replacement microphone a legitimate repair path. Look specifically for a replacement described as the Razer Barracuda V2 Pro replacement microphone or HyperClear Full Band Mic. Confirm that the listing names Barracuda V2 Pro; microphones made for Barracuda Pro or Barracuda X are different products and should not be assumed compatible. If a known-good replacement also fails in both modes, the fault is more likely inside the headset and service or full replacement is appropriate.

Battery, mode, and normal-use expectations
Razer publishes up to 70 hours of battery life with active noise cancellation (ANC) off and up to 50 hours with ANC on. These are manufacturer figures, not a guarantee for every volume level, codec, connection, or battery age. A low battery can complicate Bluetooth diagnosis, so charge the headset before deciding that its Bluetooth microphone is defective.
The external boom is intended for desk communication, while removing it invokes the internal beamforming microphones for calls on the go. That automatic change explains why a call may sound different after the boom is detached; it does not by itself indicate a failure. For a controlled comparison, keep the same microphone physically attached or detached during both Windows tests.
A final end-to-end checklist
- Physical mute is off.
- The HyperClear Full Band Mic is fully inserted, or you intentionally selected the internal beamforming microphones by removing it.
- SmartSwitch is set to the connection you are testing.
- Windows 11 shows the Barracuda under Settings > System > Sound > Input.
- The Windows Start test recording contains your voice at a usable level.
- Microphone access, Let apps access your microphone, and Let desktop apps access your microphone are enabled.
- For USB wireless, the dongle is connected directly and away from active USB 3.0 devices.
- For Bluetooth, the headset is charged, connected rather than merely paired, within range, and using the correct recording profile.
- The affected application has the Barracuda selected and is allowed to use the microphone.
- If Windows cannot detect an input, the audio device has been removed, Windows restarted, hardware rescanned, and drivers checked.
- If both modes remain silent, the detachable microphone has been inspected and tested on another compatible device before buying a replacement.
Following that order prevents the most common mistake: replacing a working microphone for an application setting, Windows privacy switch, wrong SmartSwitch mode, or radio-interference problem. The Windows test establishes whether the Barracuda is delivering audio at all; only a failure there across both modes justifies treating the microphone or headset as defective.
