Sam Rockwell provides the voice of Raymond “Ray” Gunn, the film’s central investigator. Ray is described as a small-time private eye working in Metropia. His profession matters because the city has automated much of the work that traditionally defined a detective.

Instead of relying entirely on machines, Ray continues to do the human work of investigation. The official descriptions present him as one of the investigators who still follows leads and pursues answers personally. That places him in a deliberately old-fashioned role inside an advanced city: he is a detective in a future where detective work has become increasingly mechanized.
Why Ray’s job defines the premise
Ray is not introduced as a government agent, futuristic soldier or technological genius. He is a working private eye operating at the smaller end of Metropia’s criminal ecosystem. The contrast between his traditional methods and the city’s automated tools supplies the film’s procedural hook.
Netflix’s trailer coverage mentions tiny “pry bots” that perform much of the traditional detective’s legwork. Their presence does not erase Ray’s role; it shows what he is up against. His investigation requires judgment, persistence and relationships in a world that can send machines to search, observe and retrieve information.

Scarlett Johansson voices the star at the center of the case
Venus Nova is voiced by Scarlett Johansson. Netflix describes her as a famous pop star or multimedia star, making her one of the most visible people in Metropia rather than another anonymous client in Ray’s casebook.
Her public image is under pressure. Scandals threaten Venus’s career, and the official descriptions add a more serious possibility: the danger surrounding her may become a threat to her life. That combination of celebrity, scandal and physical peril draws Ray into the film’s central mystery.

Venus connects Metropia’s glamorous and criminal worlds
The trailer article says Venus’s circle of associates becomes part of Ray’s trail. His investigation therefore moves through both the polished, high-profile side of the city and its grittier criminal underside. The story’s case is not confined to a single backstage location or one private residence; the people around Venus help guide Ray through Metropia’s contrasting social spaces.
Because Venus is described as a multimedia star, her importance is broader than a conventional singer cameo. Her career, public reputation and personal safety are all tied to the mystery. The available official material does not identify every scandal or explain who is targeting her, so specific plot theories should not be treated as confirmed story information.
Who voices Eyera or Eye-Ra, Ray’s alien partner?
Tom Waits supplies the partner’s voice
Tom Waits voices Ray’s trusted alien colleague and partner. This is the film’s clearest answer to questions such as “Is Tom Waits in Ray Gunn?” and “Who plays the alien partner?”
The character’s name has two forms in Netflix’s own editorial articles. The June first-look piece spells it “Eyera.” The September trailer article uses “Eye-Ra.” Both spellings refer to Ray’s one-eyed alien partner; the published material does not establish one as a definitive replacement for the other.
What “one-eyed” and “cyclopean” mean here
Netflix’s first-look description calls the partner one-eyed, while the later trailer article calls the character cyclopean. Those descriptions identify the same visual idea: an alien companion built around a single eye. They are useful clues to the character’s design, but the articles do not provide a full biography, species name or explanation of the partner’s background.

What is established is the working relationship. Ray and his alien colleague investigate together, making the partnership central to the film’s detective structure. The pair bring a classic private-eye setup into a city where humans and aliens live side by side.

Netflix’s official title page lists seven additional performers:

The title page does not assign character names to these actors. Their inclusion confirms a larger ensemble, but it does not support a complete actor-to-role chart. A reliable cast guide should therefore avoid presenting a guessed role as fact.
Why online role lists can be misleading
A secondary cast guide publishes additional names and role claims, but describes itself as a work in progress. At least one of its assignments is explicitly framed as an inference rather than a confirmed announcement. Until Netflix or another primary production source identifies those characters, treat such listings as reported or provisional.
This distinction is especially important for an animated film. Voice performers can record parts long before marketing reveals a character’s design or name, and ensemble announcements often arrive in stages. The confirmed information currently supports a three-character lead guide, not a definitive roster for every member of the supporting cast.

Where and when does the story take place?
Metropia is a retro-futurist city
Metropia is a gigantic city in an alternate future viewed from 1939. Its look draws on Art Deco and a prewar idea of tomorrow: tall buildings, flying cars and advanced machines coexist with the visual language of classic detective cinema.
That period lens is part of the film’s identity. This is not simply a contemporary city with futuristic gadgets added to it. The setting imagines how the future might have looked through late-1930s design, architecture and pulp storytelling.
Humans, aliens and automated investigation
Humans and aliens live together in Metropia. The city’s technology includes the small “pry bots” mentioned in Netflix’s trailer coverage, which take over much of the searching and evidence-gathering that a traditional detective might once have handled.
The combination creates a layered setting for Ray’s case. He works among advanced infrastructure and nonhuman residents, yet the story retains the pressures of noir: murder, corruption, compromised institutions and people with motives they would rather conceal.

Brad Bird’s noir-and-science-fiction pitch
Director Brad Bird summarized the concept in a concise phrase: “The elevator pitch I came up with is The Maltese Falcon meets Buck Rogers.” Netflix Tudum published that statement on June 24, 2026. The comparison signals a meeting of classic private-eye storytelling and space-age adventure rather than a straightforward superhero formula.

The noir side appears in Ray’s occupation, the murder-and-corruption backdrop and the trail through a celebrity’s troubled circle. The science-fiction side appears in Metropia’s alternate-future design, flying cars, alien citizens and automated investigative machines.
Why the animation matters
Bird also explained his choice of medium: “Animation is too fun a medium, and too interesting, to limit what kind of stories can be told.” Netflix Tudum published that statement on September 23, 2026. In this context, animation enables the film to combine an Art Deco megacity, alien characters, pry bots and a stylized detective atmosphere without treating any one element as an exception.
How the three lead characters fit the mystery
- Ray supplies the investigation. As a private eye, he is the person who follows the case through Metropia rather than relying solely on automated tools.
- Venus supplies the stakes. Her celebrity scandals threaten her career, while the danger around her may become life-threatening.
- Eyera or Eye-Ra supplies the partnership. Tom Waits’s alien character is Ray’s trusted colleague, giving the investigation a two-person team that spans human and alien experience.
- Metropia supplies the collision of worlds. Ray’s trail moves between glamorous celebrity spaces and the city’s criminal underside, all within a retro-futurist society where humans and aliens coexist.
The official descriptions stop short of revealing the culprit, the exact nature of Venus’s scandals or the complete chain of suspects. Those omissions are deliberate limits of the announced plot, not gaps that should be filled with speculation.

Netflix’s published schedule, as reported in 2026, separates the first theatrical engagements from the streaming launch.

For now, the most accurate “who’s who” guide is therefore a focused one: Rockwell’s traditional detective, Johansson’s endangered celebrity and Waits’s alien partner, with the remaining ensemble acknowledged but not assigned speculative character names.
