If your Ray-Ban Meta glasses beep, blink, or begin listening when nobody intentionally spoke to them, first determine whether they recognized a wake event or whether another notification is being mistaken for one. The glasses listen for the wake phrases “Hey Meta” and “OK Meta.” When one is recognized, the notification LED pulses white; if Wake sound is enabled, an earcon also plays. You can stop hands-free activation by disabling Voice or the Hey Meta feature in the Meta AI app, while retaining button-based capture and normal audio.
Work through the settings, update, and microphone checks below before unpairing or resetting the glasses. Persistent false triggers after those steps warrant Ray-Ban support or a warranty assessment rather than repeated resets.

What a false activation looks like
Ray-Ban Meta glasses use two equivalent wake phrases: “Hey Meta” and “OK Meta.” A recognized phrase puts the glasses into a state ready for a spoken command. Ray-Ban’s official FAQ describes the confirmation this way: “When you say ‘Hey Meta’ or ‘OK Meta’, the notification LED will pulse white and an earcon will play to let you know the glasses are ready for your voice command.”

A white pulse and the earcon together mean the glasses recognized a wake event, whether or not you intended to say the phrase. There is no reliable independent statistic showing how often these glasses false-trigger. Treat each incident as a troubleshooting case involving settings, software, microphone behavior, or potentially a hardware fault.
Stop hands-free activation first
Disable Hey Meta while keeping the glasses usable
- Open the Meta AI app on the phone paired with your glasses.
- Open the connected glasses’ settings and enter Voice.
- Open the Hey Meta preferences.
- Turn the Hey Meta toggle off. If the app presents a separate Voice control, turn that off as well when you want all voice activation disabled.
Disabling the wake feature is the least disruptive fix when your priority is preventing unsolicited listening. The capture button can still be used for photos and video, and the glasses can continue to provide audio. You can turn the voice controls back on later without resetting the device.
Use Wake sound as a temporary diagnostic
Wake sound is separate from the wake-word switch. Turn it on temporarily in the voice settings if you need an audible correlation between a trigger and the white LED pulse. Say “Hey Meta” once in a quiet room while watching and listening. A white pulse plus the earcon confirms that the glasses detected a wake event. After testing, you can turn Wake sound off again if you prefer silent operation.

Run a controlled trigger test
Test in a quiet environment
- Put the glasses on and make sure they are connected to the Meta AI app.
- Enable Voice and Hey Meta temporarily if you disabled them.
- Enable Wake sound.
- In a quiet room, say “Hey Meta” once at a normal speaking volume.
- Watch for the notification LED to pulse white and listen for the earcon.
- Repeat from several feet away, then remain silent for a few minutes and note whether the same LED-and-earcon pattern occurs without speech.
Record the conditions of any incident: time, location, nearby speech or television audio, whether the LED pulsed white, and whether the earcon played. This simple log helps support staff distinguish a confirmed wake event from a different notification.
Interpret the result
- Only intentional phrases trigger the signals: the wake system is behaving as designed; leave Hey Meta off if you do not want hands-free activation.
- Unintended speech or background audio produces both signals: continue with the software and microphone steps below.
- Behavior is intermittent, with missing or delayed responses: toggle Voice and Hey Meta off and on, then update the app and glasses before testing again.
Refresh the voice settings
Toggle Voice and Hey Meta
In the Meta AI app, open the glasses’ Voice settings and switch Voice and Hey Meta off. Wait a few seconds, then switch them back on and repeat the controlled test. This refreshes the feature without removing the pairing. If your goal is simply to prevent all hands-free activation, leave the toggles off instead.
Check for accidental activation patterns
False triggers can be confused with deliberate phrases spoken by another person, a television, a podcast, or a phone assistant. Test with nearby audio sources muted. Do not attempt to “train” the glasses by repeating many phrases; the supported controls are the Voice, Hey Meta, and Wake sound settings, followed by the manufacturer’s update and microphone workflows.

Update the Meta AI app and glasses
Install the latest Meta AI app available for your phone, then check the glasses’ software. Ray-Ban’s documented path is:
- Open the Meta AI app.
- Go to Settings → Glasses & Privacy → Your Glasses → Updates.
- Install any offered glasses update and keep the glasses connected until the process finishes.
- Reopen the Voice settings and repeat the controlled trigger test.
Ray-Ban’s microphone troubleshooting workflow lists Meta AI app version 143 or above. If your installed version is older than 143, update the app before relying on the microphone diagnostic. The exact availability of an update can vary by phone and rollout, so use the version shown by your app store rather than assuming every device receives it simultaneously.
Run Microphone troubleshooting
When voice behavior is inconsistent, Ray-Ban directs users to investigate the microphone. In the Meta AI app, open the glasses’ troubleshooting tools and choose Microphone troubleshooting. Follow the prompts exactly and repeat the wake test afterward.

Check microphone adjustment
If the diagnostic does not resolve the behavior, turn off Microphone adjustment in the glasses settings and test again. A changed microphone-adjustment state can reveal whether the inconsistency is associated with the way the microphones are being calibrated. Leave the setting in the state that gives predictable behavior, or report the result to support if neither state helps.
What to note for support
- The Meta AI app version, including whether it is version 143 or newer.
- The glasses software version shown on the Updates screen.
- Whether the notification LED pulses white during an unintended event.
- Whether Wake sound plays the earcon at the same time.
- The result of Microphone troubleshooting with Microphone adjustment on and off.
These observations are more useful than describing the glasses as simply “random.” They identify whether a wake event was actually recognized and which manufacturer workflow has already been completed.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errors2Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitches3Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsUnpair and pair the glasses again
Use re-pairing only after the settings, update, and microphone checks. In the Meta AI app, open the connected glasses’ device settings, choose the unpair or remove-device command shown there, and complete the prompts. Then put the glasses into pairing mode and add them again through the app.
Best Value
- Get the most out of the moment with iconic Ray-Ban style and technology by Meta. Now featuring frames for a broader range of face shapes.
- Never miss a beat—ask Meta AI to take photos or videos, unearth information, create clever image captions or check out FAQ’s.
- Video call hands-free and share your POV so others can feel like they’re right there with you whether you’re cooking, watching a game or sharing core memories.
- Capture your world with an updated camera and built-in edit features. Take high-quality photos and videos hands free or livestream your point of view.
- Discreet open-ear speakers let you enjoy rich audio quality, music and calls without losing the ambient sounds of your surroundings.
Before unpairing, make sure you know which phone account and app you will use to pair them again. After pairing, revisit Voice, Hey Meta, Wake sound, and Microphone adjustment; these settings may not be in the state you expect after setup. Run the quiet-room test before returning to normal use.
Factory-reset only as a last software step
A factory reset is more disruptive than changing a toggle or re-pairing. Use it only when the earlier steps fail. The documented button sequence is:
- Close the right temple arm.
- Press the capture button five times. Continue until the user LED turns orange.
- Press and hold the capture button until the LED flashes.
- Release the button and wait for the LED cycle to finish completely.
- Unpair the glasses from the Meta AI app, then pair them again.
Do not interrupt the LED cycle or open the temple arm during the reset sequence. Once setup is complete, update the glasses if an update is offered and repeat the microphone and wake-event tests. If the same confirmed white-pulse-and-earcon events occur while the glasses are silent and Hey Meta is enabled, document that result for support.

Contact Ray-Ban support when false confirmed wake events continue after the latest app and glasses software, Voice and Hey Meta toggling, Microphone troubleshooting, re-pairing, and the factory-reset procedure. Include your incident log and the app and glasses versions.
Support can determine whether the symptoms fit a known software issue or require inspection. A replacement pair is a reasonable path only after support or a warranty claim confirms a hardware fault; replacing the glasses before completing those checks does not establish why the original pair activated.
Quick Recap
Choose the least disruptive setting for your goal
| Goal | Setting or action | What remains available |
|---|---|---|
| Prevent hands-free wake events | Turn off Voice and Hey Meta in the Meta AI app | Button-based capture and audio can remain available |
| Identify whether a beep is a wake event | Temporarily enable Wake sound and watch for the white notification LED | You can disable Wake sound after testing |
| Fix inconsistent recognition | Update the app and glasses, then run Microphone troubleshooting | Normal pairing is retained during these checks |
| Clear persistent software state | Unpair and re-pair, followed only if needed by a factory reset | Setup must be completed again afterward |
| Address a suspected hardware fault | Contact Ray-Ban support or open a warranty claim | Support determines repair or replacement eligibility |
Practical safeguards while troubleshooting
- Leave Hey Meta off when you are in meetings, recording environments, or other places where an unintended wake event would be disruptive.
- Use Wake sound only long enough to correlate sounds with the LED; it is a diagnostic aid, not a sensitivity control.
- Perform tests with podcasts, television, and nearby conversations stopped so that the result is reproducible.
- Do not jump directly to a factory reset; it adds setup work without replacing the update and microphone checks.
- Do not treat cleaning products, unrelated computer software, or streaming subscriptions as fixes for wake-word recognition; the manufacturer’s documented path is settings, updates, microphone troubleshooting, re-pairing, reset, and support.
