Ray-Ban Meta Gen 3 adds a sixth microphone and raises Meta’s claimed battery life to up to nine hours—one hour more than Gen 2. Those are useful refinements, but the available hands-on report describes the overall changes as incremental, not a transformation. Whether the upgrade is worthwhile depends on how much you value clearer calls in noisy places and the extra claimed runtime against Gen 2’s lower report-era US starting price.
What changed from Ray-Ban Meta Gen 2?
The clearest hardware changes are the microphone array and claimed battery life. Gen 3 has six microphones, compared with five on Gen 2, and Meta says it lasts up to nine hours on one charge rather than Gen 2’s eight. The camera remains 12 MP, while Meta lists 3K Ultra HD video for Gen 3.

Meta says the six-microphone array reduces background noise by more than 90%. That is a manufacturer claim, not an independently measured result in the cited coverage, so it should not be read as a guaranteed reduction in every room, street, or call.

In a brief hands-on session, PCMag Principal Reporter Michael Kan found that he could hear and be heard by the glasses in a noisy reception. That is a useful real-world observation, but it was one environment and not a controlled comparison against Gen 2. It does not establish how the microphones perform across different noise levels or settings.
How long does the battery last?
Meta lists up to nine hours of use on a charge for Gen 3, one hour more than Gen 2. “Up to” is a ceiling claim, not a promise that every owner will reach nine hours. Ray-Ban says actual battery life varies with use, configuration, settings, temperature, internet connectivity, and other factors. The cited sources do not provide a controlled endurance test or a typical-runtime figure.

What else is new—and what stays familiar?
Camera and video
Meta lists a 12 MP still camera and 3K Ultra HD video for Gen 3. PCMag reported that the camera remains 12 MP, so the headline upgrades are not a higher still-photo resolution. Meta also says a built-in LED indicates when the glasses are capturing a photo or video; the cited sources do not establish whether bystanders reliably notice it.

Meta lists Wayfarer, Aviator, and Zena styles, with 27 color and lens combinations. It describes Gen 3 as slimmer and says the temple tips are adjustable. Kan found the Aviator comfortable during his trial, while noting that it still felt bulkier than ordinary glasses. That short personal observation is not a long-term comfort assessment or a comparison across frame styles.

Phone, app, account, and feature availability
Ray-Ban’s US product information says setup requires a compatible smartphone, the Meta AI app, and a Meta account. Some voice and AI features are limited by country and language, so check availability for your location and preferred language before buying.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone. Is Ray-Ban Meta Gen 3 worth upgrading from Gen 2?
Gen 3 is the more compelling choice if you often take calls in noisy surroundings and want the added microphone, or if an extra hour of Meta’s claimed maximum battery life matters to your routine. PCMag’s hands-on account suggests the microphones can work in a noisy reception, but it does not establish a broad performance advantage over Gen 2.

The upgrade is less persuasive if Gen 2 already meets your needs: the camera remains 12 MP, the cited report characterizes the overall changes as incremental, and its September 24, 2026 US starting prices were $449 for Gen 3 versus $379 for Gen 2. Treat those as report-era figures; current prices and availability may differ. For a first-time buyer, choose by frame fit, lens configuration, price, and whether the required phone-and-app setup and features are available where you live.
