Ratatan is announced for Nintendo Switch 2 on October 14 in Nintendo UK’s listing, corresponding to the October 15, 2026 worldwide version 1.0 launch announced by the developers. It combines rhythm-led commands, side-scrolling action and roguelike progression. You tap sequences to direct Cobuns, position Ratatans and decide when to advance or retreat. Online co-op supports up to four players, while Nintendo lists one player on a single Switch 2 system.
What Ratatan is
Ratatan is not simply a music game with an action layer. Its core loop asks you to keep time while making battlefield decisions. Rhythm inputs issue orders to Cobuns, the game’s combat units; positioning Ratatans and choosing where to direct commands adds tactical judgment. Retreating at the right moment is part of the decision-making rather than an automatic failure state.

Nintendo describes the game as a “rhythm roguelike action game that combines rhythm games and side-scrolling action.” The official product description also claims battles can involve more than 100 characters. That is a stated feature claim, not an independently measured on-screen count. The Steam page highlights lively 2D animation, matching the game’s colorful presentation.

How the Patapon comparison helps—and where it stops
Calling Ratatan “Patapon-style” is useful shorthand for its beat-based commands and marching army, but it does not establish a formal sequel relationship. Ratatan uses that familiar rhythm-to-command idea while adding roguelike structure: runs, selectable weapons and skills, world progression and repeat attempts are central to its design. Newcomers do not need prior knowledge of Patapon to understand the systems.

How the rhythm-action systems fit together
Rhythm inputs
You tap rhythm sequences to order Cobuns. Timing is therefore an input method and a strategic constraint: commands are made through musical patterns rather than conventional ability menus alone.
Positioning and command choice
Ratatans can be positioned, and you choose where to issue commands. That combination means success depends on more than maintaining a beat. You must read the side-scrolling battlefield, decide which units need orders and determine whether the current push is worth the risk.

Roguelike progression
The Steam Early Access description lists multiple worlds, playable characters, weapons, skills, boss battles, multiplayer and progression. Early Access reached up to World 5. The developers announced that version 1.0 would add Episodes 3 and 4, the final world and boss, bring the Dark Ratatans together and include the promised orchestral recording. These are announced 1.0 contents; check final release notes for the shipped build.

The October 14/15 difference is a regional calendar distinction, not evidence of separate game versions. The same-day platform announcement does not confirm cross-play, so do not assume Switch 2 players can join PC or other-console sessions.

Multiplayer on Switch 2
Nintendo and Steam describe online co-op for one to four players. On Switch 2, Nintendo lists one player on a single system, so local same-system multiplayer should not be inferred from the online four-player limit. Nintendo also says online play requires Nintendo Switch Online membership and internet access, and warns that online features are unavailable in some countries.

What changed from Early Access to 1.0
Steam Early Access started on September 18, 2025. The Early Access build already contained the core rhythm-action loop, several worlds, playable characters, weapons and skills, multiplayer, boss battles and progression. In a September 14 announcement, the Ratatan developers described the planned 1.0 expansion as adding Episodes 3 and 4, the final world and boss, the assembled Dark Ratatans and an orchestral recording.

Because those details are developer announcements made before launch, buyers should compare them with the final version 1.0 notes after release rather than treating every promised item as independently verified content.
Steam reception and what it does—and does not—tell you
On October 13, 2026, Steam displayed 90% positive English-language reviews from 928 reviews and 80% positive recent reviews from 15 reviews. These are changing user-review snapshots, not critic scores, laboratory results or evidence of Switch 2 performance. They also describe the Steam audience rather than the console version specifically.

The Kickstarter campaign lists 14,598 backers pledging ¥219,314,335, with the page last updated August 17, 2026. That figure measures crowdfunding support, not sales, active players or install base.
Edition and buying considerations
Nintendo’s US Digital Deluxe listing is explicitly digital. It includes the full game plus Equipment & Accessories, Super Cobun and Supplies DLC sets; some included items can also be earned through progression. Earlier publisher information described a physical and digital release scheduled for July 16, 2026, but that date was superseded by the October version 1.0 announcement. Current official launch material does not establish whether a physical Switch 2 edition remains planned, so verify a regional listing before buying a boxed copy.
For the digital version, confirm that the store page is for “Ratatan for Nintendo Switch 2,” check the edition name and review the online-service requirement for your country. Preorder discounts and launch prices were time-limited offers and are not treated as current prices here.

- Rhythm-game players: the beat is directly tied to commands rather than being a separate score challenge.
- Strategy fans: positioning, target selection and retreat decisions provide a layer beyond timing alone.
- Co-op groups: online sessions can include up to four players, subject to Nintendo Switch Online and regional availability.
- Patapon-curious newcomers: the comparison explains the command-through-rhythm premise, but Ratatan’s roguelike progression gives it a distinct structure.
There is not yet sourced evidence here to judge Switch 2 frame rate, controls, accessibility options or technical performance. Those questions require platform testing or final technical documentation. Based on the announced systems, Ratatan’s appeal is clear: it turns musical timing into battlefield orders, then asks you to make roguelike risk decisions around those orders. The October 2026 version 1.0 launch is the point at which the complete campaign and final-world additions can be assessed.
