Short answer: A Raspberry Pi 5 can run a 24/7 FFmpeg playlist stream, but it is not automatically the better choice. It uses software video encoders, so encoding or transcoding continuously needs to be tested on the actual board and stream settings. A VPS removes dependence on home power and broadband, but its cost, transfer allowance, and reliability depend on the specific plan. If you want a YouTube playlist to keep running without maintaining a computer at home or a VPS, StreamNeo is a cloud alternative: StreamNeo loops uploaded videos on YouTube.
Which should you choose: a Raspberry Pi 5 or a VPS?
Choose based on where you want the operational risks to sit. A Pi relies on your hardware, home power, router, and ISP; a VPS relies on the provider’s network and your server configuration. Neither is proven universally cheaper or more reliable by the available specifications.
| Factor | Raspberry Pi 5 at home | VPS |
|---|---|---|
| Video processing | Uses software video encoders. If FFmpeg must encode or transcode, test the intended source, resolution, frame rate, codec, and command on the actual board. | Depends on the selected virtual CPU and any offered hardware acceleration. Check the exact plan; do not assume it includes an encoder. |
| Connection | Depends on stable home upload capacity and local network equipment. YouTube recommends leaving 20% upload headroom. | Depends on provider networking and the plan’s included outbound transfer and overage terms. |
| Continuity | Depends on home power, router, ISP, hardware, and recovery automation. | Depends on the provider, instance configuration, monitoring, and process restart setup. No provider uptime claim is established here. |
| Cost | Depends on whether you already own the board, electricity rates, accessories, storage, and replacement needs. | Depends on current plan price, transfer allowance, overages, and storage. No specific plan is established here. |
| Operations | You maintain hardware, operating system, cooling, storage, networking, and recovery. | You maintain the server process and software setup; the provider supplies the virtual machine and network service. |
| YouTube archive | The same YouTube archive limit applies regardless of where FFmpeg runs. | |
When a Pi makes sense
A Pi is a reasonable option if you already have the board, can provide stable upload bandwidth and power, and are willing to maintain and monitor the setup. If the source is already encoded in a format YouTube accepts and FFmpeg can pass it through without video re-encoding or filters, encoding demand may be lower. That is an engineering consideration, not a measured result for a particular file or command; check codecs and timestamps.
When a VPS makes sense
A VPS suits a workflow that should not depend on a home computer or connection, provided the chosen plan has enough sustained outbound transfer and suitable compute for your stream. Check the plan’s traffic limits, overage policy, price, service terms, and restart options before committing. Hosting does not remove the need to configure FFmpeg, monitor the process, or handle failures.

Set up a Raspberry Pi 5 for the stream
The sources do not establish a tested FFmpeg command or benchmark for this exact playlist workload. Treat the following as a deployment checklist rather than a guaranteed configuration: validate the input and output on your own board, then observe the stream before relying on it unattended.
1. Check the hardware and power
Raspberry Pi documentation lists Pi 5 configurations with 2 GB, 4 GB, 8 GB, or 16 GB memory, Gigabit Ethernet, microSD storage, and USB-C power. Raspberry Pi recommends its 27 W USB-C power supply. With a 3 A supply, USB peripherals are limited to 600 mA; with a 5 A supply, the board can provide up to 1.6 A to downstream USB peripherals. Those are hardware specifications, not a measurement of power use during an FFmpeg stream.
Plan storage for the playlist files, operating system, logs, and any separate recordings. Use wired Ethernet where practical and ensure the board can shed heat under its actual workload. Keep the system and FFmpeg installation maintained, and arrange a way to restart the process after a failure or power interruption.
2. Decide whether FFmpeg must encode
Raspberry Pi states that “Raspberry Pi 5 uses software video encoders.” Do not assume the board has a dedicated hardware video encoder. If your workflow resizes, changes frame rate, adds filters, or transcodes, benchmark the exact FFmpeg command with the intended resolution, frame rate, and codec on the board. A source that can be passed through without re-encoding may avoid much of the video-encoding work, but still requires validation of format compatibility and timestamps.

3. Confirm upload headroom
Measure upload performance under realistic conditions, not just download speed or a single ideal test. YouTube says the outgoing bitrate cannot exceed available upload bandwidth and recommends leaving 20% room. For example, applying that recommendation to one 14 Mbps stream implies at least 16.8 Mbps available upload: 14 Mbps plus 20% headroom. This is arithmetic from YouTube’s guidance, not a separate guaranteed threshold. Check for congestion and instability at the hours the stream will run.
4. Match the output to YouTube’s ingest guidance
YouTube recommends RTMPS and lists H.264, H.265, and AV1 as video codec options. Its guidance sets a 60 fps ceiling, recommends a two-second keyframe interval (not over four seconds), and recommends constant bitrate (CBR). Use settings that match the source, encoder, and available upload; do not treat recommended values as a reliability guarantee.
| Output example | YouTube recommended bitrate | Qualification |
|---|---|---|
| H.264, 1080p30 | 14 Mbps | YouTube’s listed recommendation for this codec, resolution, and frame rate. |
| H.264, 720p30 | 8 Mbps | YouTube’s listed recommendation for this codec, resolution, and frame rate. |
| AV1 or H.265, 1080p30 | 10 Mbps | YouTube’s listed recommendation for these codecs, resolution, and frame rate. |
| AV1 or H.265, 720p30 | 6 Mbps | YouTube’s listed recommendation for these codecs, resolution, and frame rate. |
Bitrate recommendations vary with codec, resolution, and frame rate. Check YouTube’s current encoder guidance before configuring a stream, especially if using a profile not shown above.
5. Configure YouTube and test before relying on it
-
In YouTube Studio, create or schedule the live stream and copy its stream key. Treat the key as a password: do not publish it, commit it to a public repository, or share it in logs or screenshots. If it is exposed, replace it in YouTube Studio and update FFmpeg.

Configure FFmpeg to send the playlist to YouTube’s RTMPS ingest endpoint using the stream key, with output encoding and bitrate settings chosen for the source and your measured upload. The exact command depends on whether the input needs re-encoding, filters, or timestamp handling; no one command is established as tested for all playlists.
-
Start with a private or unlisted test stream, confirm the video and audio, and check YouTube’s stream health and messages. YouTube recommends testing before going live. Monitor the process and the ingest status long enough to catch interruptions or timestamp problems before making the broadcast unattended.
-
For a Pi, test restart behavior after a process crash and power interruption. For a VPS, configure process monitoring and restart behavior for the instance you selected. In either case, check that restarting FFmpeg does not leave the YouTube broadcast in an unusable state.
Plan for a stream longer than 12 hours
YouTube says streams under 12 hours can be automatically archived; a stream exceeding 12 hours may not be captured at all. Do not rely on one unbroken 24-hour broadcast as a complete YouTube archive. If retaining a recording matters, set up a separate recording path and monitor available disk space, file rotation, and recovery. Choose any segment or restart schedule around your broadcast and archive needs; no universal interval is established here.

Troubleshoot common failures
-
YouTube reports poor stream health or the broadcast drops: Check actual upload capacity and stability, then compare the outgoing bitrate with available upload. Leave the recommended 20% headroom; investigate router, ISP, and network interruptions as well as the server or Pi process.
-
The Pi cannot sustain the chosen output: Determine whether FFmpeg is encoding, transcoding, or applying filters. Test the exact workload at the target resolution and frame rate. The Pi 5 uses software video encoders, so do not assume an encoded output profile will run smoothly because a lower-demand pass-through workflow does.
-
The stream starts but video or audio behaves incorrectly: Verify the source codecs, timestamps, output codec, keyframe interval, and bitrate mode. Test in YouTube before making the stream public; check its stream health messages for ingest problems.
-
The process stops after a restart or power loss: Add and test process monitoring and restart behavior, and check the power supply, storage, and network path. A restart mechanism does not replace monitoring the resulting YouTube stream.

Compare the real costs before choosing
There is no supported like-for-like cost total without a specific VPS plan, your local electricity rate, and the equipment you already own. For a Pi, include purchase or replacement cost, power, storage, accessories, cooling, and any costs from home connection outages. For a VPS, include the recurring instance price, included outbound transfer, likely overages, storage, and any service terms that matter to a continuous stream. Also value the time needed to maintain the operating system, process monitoring, and recovery on either route.
If you would rather pay for a managed cloud loop than operate either machine, StreamNeo offers the same product on each billing duration; only the duration changes: Daily $0.99 per day · Weekly $2.99 per week · Monthly $9.99 per month · 6 months $49.99 for 6 months · Yearly $89.99 a year. UPI and cards are accepted in India; card checkout is available worldwide. You can cancel any time, and for five or more slots, contact support.
