Short answer: choose a Raspberry Pi 5 for modest, always-on services, very low idle draw, GPIO projects, or when you already own Pi hardware. Choose an Intel N100 mini PC when you are starting from scratch and need more CPU and memory headroom, a conventional x86-64 software ecosystem, included SSD storage, or stronger hardware video support. Compare complete systems—not a bare board with a ready-to-run computer—and use your local electricity rate before deciding.

What the two platforms actually are

A Raspberry Pi 5 is a single-board computer. The board contains the processor, memory, networking and expansion connectors, but a usable self-hosting system normally needs a USB-C power supply, cooling, a case and storage. If you want NVMe storage, you also need a compatible adapter and an M.2 drive. The result can be compact and efficient, but each accessory affects the final price, power draw and reliability.

An N100 mini PC is sold as a small finished computer. Typical models include a case, external power supply, memory and an M.2 SSD, although capacities, upgrade access, cooling and ports vary substantially. Some models add a 2.5-inch SATA bay; others do not. “Mini PC” therefore describes a product category, not one fixed specification.

For self-hosting, the meaningful comparison is a complete, supported system running your intended services. A board-only Pi price versus a fully assembled mini PC price answers a different question.

Raspberry Pi costs that are easy to miss

Budget for the Pi 5 board, a correctly rated USB-C supply, case and active cooling, and storage. A microSD card is the simplest boot device but is less attractive for write-heavy databases or containers than an SSD. The Pi 5 exposes a single-lane PCI Express 2.0 interface; an M.2 adapter board lets you attach an NVMe drive, but adds another purchase, cable or mounting choice and assembly step.

Tom’s Hardware reported on January 6, 2026 that Raspberry Pi pricing had moved sharply. Its US-market snapshot listed a 1GB Pi 5 board at $45 and a 16GB board at $145. Those are board prices, not complete servers. In the same report, a specified 16GB Pi 5 kit with a 512GB SSD, 27W supply, case and RTC battery was $208.75 in January 2025 and $246.95 in January 2026. Treat those figures as dated US examples and recheck the price in your region.

What an N100 price usually includes

An N100 mini PC commonly arrives with its enclosure, power brick, RAM and SSD, so it may require fewer add-ons. Verify the exact listing: one model may include 8GB RAM and a small SSD while another has 16GB and a larger drive; some permit memory or storage upgrades and others have soldered or difficult-to-access parts. Include any replacement SSD, additional RAM, USB storage, or extra cooling in your calculation.

Tom’s Hardware reported a US price of $156.87 for the GMKtec Nucbox G3 Plus in August 2025 and $246.99 in January 2026. That change illustrates why a price seen in an older guide is not a dependable current quote. It also shows that a mini PC can lose its apparent value advantage when memory and storage prices move.

Example complete-system comparison

Item Raspberry Pi 5 build N100 mini PC
Computer Pi 5 board; Tom’s Hardware reported $45 for 1GB and $145 for 16GB in its January 2026 US snapshot Complete model price varies; a reported GMKtec Nucbox G3 Plus snapshot was $246.99 in January 2026
Power supply Buy a compatible USB-C supply; the reported 16GB kit included a 27W supply Normally included, but verify the model
Case and cooling Usually separate; active cooling is advisable for sustained loads Included enclosure and cooling, design varies
Boot/storage microSD or an SSD; NVMe requires an adapter board and drive Usually an included M.2 SSD; some models also provide SATA
Memory upgrade Choose the board capacity carefully; board memory is not normally a later upgrade May be replaceable or may be soldered; check the exact model
Other likely costs NVMe adapter, drive, Ethernet cable, RTC battery or mounting hardware as needed Additional RAM, larger SSD, SATA drive or USB storage as needed

Use the table as a checklist rather than a quote. Add shipping, taxes and local availability, then compare like-for-like storage and memory. A Pi can be cheaper when you already own a supply, case and storage; a bundled mini PC can be cheaper when you need all of those parts.

Power use and the electricity bill

Do not confuse peak power with idle draw

Raspberry Pi’s 2023 Pi 5 announcement says peak consumption can reach around 12W under the most intensive workloads. That is a peak figure discussed alongside power-supply and peripheral constraints, not an idle measurement.

A selfhosting.sh comparison measured its selected Pi 5 configuration at 3–4W headless idle and 10–12W at full load. Its selected N100 mini PC measured 6–8W idle and 15–18W at full load. The readings belong to those particular systems, power supplies and workloads; adding disks, USB devices, fans or network equipment changes wall draw.

Annual-cost example

For a simple illustration, selfhosting.sh used a 5W average for the Pi and an 8W average for the N100, with electricity at $0.12 per kilowatt-hour. The resulting annual estimates were $5.26 and $8.41, a difference of about $3.15 per year. This is not a universal bill: it is one publisher’s configuration and usage assumption.

Calculate your own figure with:

annual kWh = average watts × 8.76

annual electricity cost = annual kWh × your price per kWh

For example, a measured 7W average at $0.25/kWh is 7 × 8.76 = 61.32kWh per year, or $15.33. Measure at the wall with the complete server, not just the board, and sample both idle and a representative busy period. If your server has spinning disks, a USB enclosure or a high-speed network adapter, include those devices in the measurement.

When lower watts matter

  • Choose the Pi when you run continuously from a small battery or solar system, have tight thermal limits, or operate many small nodes.
  • Choose the N100 when the extra few watts buy enough performance to consolidate several services and avoid running another computer.
  • Consider the purchase-price difference first. A hardware premium of $40 would take more than a decade to recover from a $3.15 annual energy saving.

Performance and software compatibility

Processor characteristics

CNX Software’s April 2024 comparison describes the Pi 5 as a quad-core Arm Cortex-A76 system and the N100 as a quad-core Intel Alder Lake-N system with turbo speeds up to 3.4GHz. In the CPU workloads it tested, the N100 produced stronger benchmark results. Those are results for the compared configurations and benchmarks, not a guarantee for every N100 mini PC or every application.

The practical difference appears when several services compete for CPU time. DNS filtering, a VPN endpoint, a lightweight Home Assistant installation, a small Git service or a few low-traffic web containers are generally modest workloads. A database with many concurrent queries, multiple build jobs, virtual machines, large search indexes or numerous containers benefits from the N100’s additional headroom and the memory capacity available in the particular model.

ARM64 versus x86-64

Pi 5 runs an Arm64 operating system; N100 systems run x86-64. Most mainstream Linux server software publishes images for both architectures, but not every container, binary-only utility or kernel module does. Before buying, check the exact image manifest and installation instructions for your operating system. A service that depends on an x86-only binary may require emulation, a different image or a separate host on the Pi.

Conversely, a project that needs Pi-specific GPIO libraries, a camera interface or HAT hardware is naturally suited to the Pi. Verify that your chosen distribution supports the Pi 5 kernel, boot firmware and attached peripherals rather than assuming a generic ARM image is sufficient.

Media and graphics workloads

CNX Software lists broader integrated-graphics and video-format support in the N100 configuration it compared. That can matter for a media server that transcodes video instead of merely serving already-compatible files. Support still depends on the operating system, driver, application version, codecs and the exact mini PC implementation. Test the media pipeline you intend to use; do not assume that every N100 box exposes identical hardware acceleration.

Storage, reliability and expansion

Pi 5 storage choices

Booting from microSD keeps the Pi inexpensive and simple, but frequent writes increase the importance of card quality, backups and safe shutdowns. An NVMe drive attached through the Pi 5’s single-lane PCIe 2.0 interface can provide a more suitable system disk for containers and databases. The adapter, drive, mounting and cooling become part of the build, and the interface is not equivalent to the multi-lane storage buses found in larger computers.

N100 storage choices

Most N100 mini PCs include an M.2 SSD, which means the system can be ready to install immediately. Some also provide a SATA connector or drive bay. Inspect the service manual or manufacturer specification for the exact M.2 key, supported drive length, SATA power cable, maximum capacity and access procedure. A nominally upgradeable system can still be inconvenient if the bottom cover is difficult to remove or the cooling solution cannot handle a hotter replacement drive.

Backups and data protection

Neither platform protects data merely by having an SSD. Keep an independent backup of configuration files and irreplaceable data, and test restoring it. If you add external disks, budget for their power supplies and account for their idle and spin-up consumption. A small server that loses its only disk is a larger problem than one that uses a few extra watts.

Which platform fits common self-hosting workloads?

Workload Better starting point Reason
DNS blocker, local NTP, lightweight VPN Pi 5 Low resource demand and low idle draw; either architecture can work if the software supports it
One or two low-traffic web apps Pi 5 for economy; N100 for growth Pi is adequate at modest traffic, while N100 leaves more CPU and RAM margin
Home Assistant with a small device estate Pi 5 Compact, efficient and well suited to GPIO-adjacent projects; use dependable storage and backups
Many Docker or Podman containers N100 mini PC More CPU and RAM options reduce contention; verify ARM64 images if choosing Pi
Virtual machines or build servers N100 mini PC Additional headroom and x86-64 compatibility are valuable; memory capacity becomes the limiting factor
Media serving with possible transcoding N100 mini PC The compared N100 configuration had broader video-format support; verify drivers and application support
GPIO, sensors, robotics or HATs Pi 5 Header and ecosystem are central to the project
Several 3.5-inch hard drives Neither by itself Choose a system with suitable drive bays, power delivery and cooling, or use a dedicated storage enclosure
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone.Support on Ko-Fi

How to make the decision step by step

  1. List services and peak events. Write down containers, databases, virtual machines, media tasks and scheduled jobs. Mark which tasks are bursty or CPU-intensive rather than judging by average use.
  2. Check architecture support. For every image or package, confirm ARM64 support for Pi or x86-64 support for N100, plus required kernel modules, drivers and hardware acceleration.
  3. Set a memory target. Include the operating system, filesystem cache, containers and any virtual machines. Select the actual Pi memory tier or mini PC RAM configuration; do not assume it can be upgraded later.
  4. Choose storage for writes. Use an SSD for databases and container layers, decide whether Pi NVMe hardware is worth its adapter cost, and verify the mini PC’s M.2 or SATA limits.
  5. Build a complete bill of materials. Add supply, case, cooling, storage, adapters, cables, taxes and shipping. Compare equivalent capacity and memory in the same currency and region.
  6. Estimate and then measure power. Apply the annual-watt-hour formula using your tariff, then measure the assembled system at idle and under representative load before treating a small difference as decisive.
  7. Plan recovery. Document the operating system, network settings and backups. A platform that is slightly faster but difficult to restore may be a poor always-on choice.

Common pitfalls and fixes

Comparing a bare Pi with a complete PC

Symptom: the Pi appears dramatically cheaper on a price chart. Fix: add supply, case, cooling, storage and any NVMe adapter before comparing.

Using a peak number as an electricity forecast

Symptom: a 12W Pi peak figure is treated as its all-day consumption. Fix: use an average measured at the wall and retain peak figures only for supply and thermal planning.

Assuming every N100 mini PC is identical

Symptom: an application expects a port, RAM slot, SATA bay or video feature that the chosen model lacks. Fix: inspect the exact model’s specification, photos, service documentation and operating-system support.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Ignoring storage endurance

Symptom: a database or container host suffers corruption or a worn boot device. Fix: use an SSD suited to the workload, configure backups, monitor health and provide clean shutdown handling.

Forgetting thermal behavior

Symptom: performance falls during sustained builds, transcoding or encryption. Fix: use active Pi cooling, keep vents clear on the mini PC and validate sustained-load temperatures in the final enclosure.

Recommendation

Buy the Pi 5 when your priority is a small, efficient always-on host for light services, GPIO work or an existing Pi investment. Select an N100 mini PC when you are starting from zero and want a ready-to-run x86-64 machine with more CPU capacity, practical RAM and SSD options, or better prospects for hardware-assisted media work.

There is no universal winner. The cited 2024 benchmark comparison favors the N100 in its tested CPU workloads, while the cited 2026 power measurements show a modest annual electricity-cost gap under their assumptions. Market prices can erase either advantage, so make the decision from your complete local bill of materials, software compatibility and measured workload rather than from a board price, one benchmark or one wattage figure.
