An Apple Watch can be associated with a rash or burn-like mark, but the most common explanations are irritant or allergic contact dermatitis, trapped sweat or residue, friction, and an overly tight or loose band. A genuine thermal injury is possible and cannot be diagnosed from appearance alone. Remove the watch first; seek medical care promptly for significant pain, blistering, peeling, open skin, spreading redness, fever, numbness, or worsening heat.

What to do immediately

  1. Remove the Apple Watch and band. Do not put it back on merely to test whether the rash is improving. Apple advises stopping use when redness, swelling, itching, or other irritation occurs and consulting a physician before wearing it again: Apple’s skin-sensitivity guidance.
  2. Gently rinse sweat, soap, sunscreen, lotion, or other residue from the skin with lukewarm water. Pat dry; do not scrub.
  3. Keep the watch off the affected area while the skin heals or until a clinician has assessed it. Do not apply adhesive barriers, tape, coatings, or new creams to broken skin without medical advice.
  4. Photograph the area and note the watch model, band, wearing time, recent exercise or showering, cleaning products, and whether the mark is under the band, clasp, magnets, or watch back.
  5. Get prompt medical care for blisters, peeling or raw skin, severe pain, numbness, whitening or charring, rapidly spreading redness, facial or generalized swelling, breathing difficulty, fever, pus, red streaks, or increasing warmth.

Does it look more like irritation, dermatitis, or a burn?

These patterns are clues, not a diagnosis. A circular or sensor-shaped mark does not prove that a sensor caused a thermal burn.

Pattern Features that may fit What to do
Irritation or contact dermatitis Itching, redness, dryness, scaling, or a sharply outlined rash matching the band, clasp, magnets, or watch back; recurrence with the same item; improvement after removal; onset after sweating, showering, or trapped products. Stop exposure, clean and dry the skin and device, and arrange medical advice if it persists or returns.
Possible burn or significant injury Marked pain, blistering, peeling, raw skin, numbness, whitening, charring, unusual heat, or worsening after removal. Seek prompt medical assessment. Stop using a damaged or unusually hot watch and do not try to identify the cause by wearing it again.
Possible infection or another condition Spreading redness, pus, increasing warmth, red streaks, fever, severe tenderness, a rash extending beyond the watch outline, or failure to improve. Contact a clinician promptly; the problem may not be caused solely by the watch.

The American Academy of Dermatology (AAD) identifies watches and jewelry as common locations for contact dermatitis and recommends stopping exposure to the suspected item.

Common causes of an Apple Watch rash

Sweat, moisture, and residue

Sweat, soap, sunscreen, lotion, detergent, or disinfectant trapped under the watch can irritate skin. Apple recommends keeping the watch, band, and skin clean and dry, particularly after workouts or liquid exposure. Remove the watch after exercise, wash residue away, and dry everything thoroughly before considering wear again.

Pressure and friction

A band that is too tight can create pressure and occlusion; one that is too loose can rub. The watch should be secure enough for sensor contact without leaving a persistent indentation. Rotate wrists or take watch-free periods if continuous wear aggravates the area, and never wear it over inflamed or incompletely healed skin.

Nickel and other contact allergens

Apple says some watch cases, stainless-steel or aluminum models, band components, certain Hermès metal parts, and magnets contain nickel. The company says these materials meet European REACH restrictions, but that does not guarantee that a nickel-sensitive person will not react. The AAD describes nickel as a common cause of allergic contact dermatitis and notes that watches are frequent sources: AAD nickel-allergy guidance.

Apple also discloses trace acrylates and methacrylates in the case and several bands. Skin-contact exposure is designed to be minimized, yet some people can still become sensitized. Dyes, finishes, adhesives, rubber-like materials, and residues may also be relevant. A person can develop sensitivity after years of uneventful use, and reacting to one band does not prove that every Apple Watch or band will cause a reaction.

Existing eczema or sensitive skin

Inflamed or dry skin is more vulnerable to sweat, friction, and prolonged occlusion. A reaction that improves after removal may be irritant dermatitis rather than an allergy; improvement alone does not identify the precise trigger.

Why the mark may be under the sensor

A rash beneath the sensor can result from moisture, pressure, residue, the back material, or friction. Location alone does not establish that LEDs, magnets, lasers, or heart sensors are burning the skin, and there is no basis here to claim a sensor-specific burn mechanism.

A published 2023 case report describes allergic contact dermatitis associated with nickel exposure from an Apple Watch, supporting nickel as a plausible explanation in some cases but not explaining every rash: PubMed case report.

An FDA MAUDE entry dated 2026 records one reported complaint involving redness, tenderness, and peeling after Apple Watch use. MAUDE records submitted adverse events; it does not establish causation, incidence, or a confirmed product defect: FDA MAUDE report.

When to see a doctor or dermatologist

Arrange medical evaluation if the reaction is painful, blistered, peeling, raw, swollen, extensive, recurrent, or not clearly improving after stopping exposure. Also seek care for pus, spreading warmth or redness, fever, severe tenderness, or a rash that affects sleep, work, or exercise.

Dermatology assessment is especially useful when nickel, acrylate, adhesive, or rubber sensitivity is suspected. A clinician may use patch testing to identify allergic contact dermatitis; the AAD explains evaluation and treatment options at its contact-dermatitis treatment page. Do not self-treat broken skin with steroid or antibiotic products when the cause could instead be infection or a burn.

Can you wear the watch again?

Do not resume wear until the skin has healed or a clinician has advised that it is reasonable. Then change one variable at a time rather than repeatedly testing an inflamed area:

  1. Clean the watch and band according to Apple’s care instructions and ensure both are completely dry.
  2. Identify whether the reaction matched the band, hardware, or watch back, and address the suspected trigger.
  3. If a clinician agrees, try a short wear period on intact skin and inspect afterward.
  4. Stop permanently and seek medical advice if symptoms recur.

Wearing it on the other wrist is not an immediate workaround: it may expose unaffected skin to the same material or routine. It is only a later option after recovery and professional advice.

Choosing another band after recovery

A replacement band is not a treatment. It may help only when the band or its hardware is the trigger; it will not solve a reaction caused by the watch back, sweat, residue, or the wearing routine. Look for complete material disclosure, easy cleaning, adjustable fit, a compatible size, and a return policy. Treat “hypoallergenic” marketing as a description, not a guarantee.

Option What it may change Limitations
Apple Sport Loop Lightweight nylon weave, hook-and-loop adjustment, and no traditional metal buckle pressing against the wrist. U.S. price observed August 16, 2026: $49. Not certified hypoallergenic; textile dyes, moisture, or a watch-back reaction can still be problems. Keep the fabric dry.
Apple Solo Loop Liquid silicone rubber and no clasp or buckle. U.S. price observed August 16, 2026: $49. Silicone is not automatically non-irritating; sizing is critical, and stretch construction offers less adjustment.
Apple Braided Solo Loop, listed at Apple’s bands store Braided yarn interwoven with silicone threads and a clasp-free design. U.S. price observed August 16, 2026: $99. Textile or silicone sensitivity, difficult drying after heavy sweating, and limited adjustability may make it unsuitable.
Apple Sport Band Fluoroelastomer construction, pin-and-tuck closure, and easy cleaning. U.S. price observed August 16, 2026: $49. The material, trapped sweat, tightness, or metal hardware may still irritate. An official Apple product is not a default medical solution.

Prices and availability above are U.S. Apple Store observations from August 16, 2026; colors, sizes, taxes, and inventory can change. For third-party bands, undisclosed metals, dyes, adhesives, coatings, or poor sizing add uncertainty.
