A rare AMD Ryzen 9 5900X3D engineering sample reportedly surfaced online in China on October 2, 2026. Reports describe a 12-core, 24-thread Zen 3 processor for AM4 with 128MB of L3 cache, arranged across its two chiplets in an unusual 96MB-plus-32MB split. It was never released as a retail CPU, and the reported specifications should be treated as observations from a development sample—not a consumer product listing.
What is the Ryzen 9 5900X3D engineering sample?
It is a reportedly genuine, unreleased processor sample identified in reports as the Ryzen 9 5900X3D. The reported configuration is 12 cores and 24 threads, based on AMD’s Zen 3 architecture and designed for the AM4 platform. Digital Citizen and VideoCardz describe the sample and its cache arrangement, but the available reporting does not establish its provenance or provide an AMD retail specification. Digital Citizen; VideoCardz.
An engineering sample is hardware made for development and testing rather than normal sale. Its reported configuration can reveal what AMD explored, but it does not confirm that the same design would have shipped, how a finished product would behave, or whether the pictured or reported chip is representative of a production-ready part.
Why does it reportedly have 128MB, not 192MB, of L3 cache?
The reported 128MB total comes from an uneven cache layout across the processor’s two core chiplets, or CCDs:

- Powerful Content Creation and Game Performance
- 16 Cores and 32 processing threads, based on AMD "Zen 3" architecture
- 4.8 GHz Max Boost, unlocked for overclocking, 72 MB cache, DDR4-3200 support
- For the AMD Socket AM4 platform, with PCIe 4.0 support
- Cooler not included
| CCD | Reported L3 cache | Reported configuration |
|---|---|---|
| One CCD | 96MB | 32MB of standard CCD cache plus a 64MB 3D V-Cache die |
| Other CCD | 32MB | Standard CCD cache; no stacked cache is reported |
| Total | 128MB | 96MB on one CCD plus 32MB on the other |
In other words, the 64MB stacked-cache addition appears to be on just one of the two CCDs. Adding it to that CCD’s 32MB yields 96MB there; the other CCD contributes its reported 32MB of standard L3 cache. A 192MB total would require a different arrangement, such as adding the same 64MB stack to both 32MB-cache CCDs. That is not the layout described for this sample. Digital Citizen and VideoCardz report the 96MB-plus-32MB split. Digital Citizen; VideoCardz.
What do the reported clock readings tell us?
Digital Citizen reports that CPU-Z showed about 4.65GHz and another monitoring utility showed approximately 4.73GHz on the sample. These are readings from monitoring software, not a validated boost-clock specification. They do not establish sustained operating frequency or performance, and the reports provide no reproducible benchmark results for this exact processor. Digital Citizen.

Did AMD ever sell a Ryzen 9 5900X3D?
No. The 5900X3D was not released as a normal retail desktop processor. AMD’s publicly sold AM4 X3D lineup centered on other Ryzen models, leaving this reported sample as evidence of development experimentation rather than a CPU customers can buy. Digital Citizen and TechPowerUp cover the unreleased status and AM4 X3D context. Digital Citizen; TechPowerUp.

There is no substantiated answer for this particular sample. The available reports do not provide reproducible performance testing, so the cache amount and monitoring readings alone cannot show whether it would outperform either retail processor. Any claim that it is faster—or by how much—would go beyond the evidence.
