A working Apple-1 computer once owned by collector Fred Hatfield sold at Bonhams for $1,148,200 including the buyer’s premium on October 14, 2026. The result is an auction record for a commercially sold Apple-1, according to MacRumors, although a prototype fetched more earlier in 2026.
What the Hatfield Apple-1 sold for
Two bidders competed for 28 minutes before the lot closed at $1,148,200. Bonhams had estimated the computer at $500,000 to $800,000, so the final price exceeded the high estimate by a substantial margin. The published figure includes the buyer’s premium, the surcharge added to the winning bid by the auction house.

The result applies specifically to a commercial-production Apple-1. It is not a record for every Apple-1-related object, because prototype boards have reached higher prices.

A surviving working machine
The Apple-1 was an early personal computer sold as a bare circuit board rather than a complete consumer system. Bonhams’ pre-sale description identified the Hatfield example as fully functional after restoration. Working examples are considerably rarer than boards that survive only as display pieces or require major repair.

Steve Jobs’ 1978 exchange letter
The lot included a January 1978 letter from Steve Jobs, then Apple Computer Inc.’s vice president of operations. Hatfield had complained to Apple about the lack of software for the Apple-1. Jobs offered to exchange Hatfield’s computer for an Apple II 4K motherboard plus $400. Hatfield declined, keeping the original machine and the letter documenting the exchange.
The sources describing the sale summarize the offer but do not publish a complete verbatim sentence from the letter. The exact surviving document, rather than a reconstructed quotation, is therefore the important piece of evidence for the offer.

Signature and period equipment
Steve Wozniak signed the motherboard. The package also contained equipment that shows how an Apple-1 could be used in the late 1970s:
Recommended Free Tools
- A 1977 Koyo video monitor
- A Panasonic portable cassette recorder
- An Apple II ASCII keyboard
These accessories were included with the computer, not merely shown as unrelated illustrations. Their presence gives the lot a more complete period setup than a motherboard sold alone.

Documented ownership and restoration
The computer’s history added another layer of provenance. Hatfield later sold it privately for $40,000 while it needed repairs. A later owner restored the machine and obtained Wozniak’s signature. Bonhams cites an approximately $686,000 sale for the same Apple-1 in 2013, establishing a documented earlier auction result before the 2026 record.
How the price compares with other Apple-1 sales
| Object or sale | Reported price | How to interpret it |
|---|---|---|
| Hatfield Apple-1, Bonhams, October 14, 2026 | $1,148,200, including buyer’s premium | Record for a commercially sold Apple-1 |
| Hatfield Apple-1, 2013 | Approximately $686,000 | Earlier auction result cited by Bonhams; the 2026 lot had since been restored and signed |
| “Celebration” Apple-1 prototype, January 2026 | $2.75 million | Higher price for a prototype; not a commercial-production board record |
| Bonhams 2026 estimate for the Hatfield lot | $500,000–$800,000 | Pre-sale estimate, before competitive bidding |
The comparison is meaningful only when the object’s status and price terms are kept clear. A commercial board, a prototype, and a restored computer with accessories are different collectibles. Likewise, a quoted auction result that includes the buyer’s premium is not directly equivalent to a hammer price that excludes it.

How rare are Apple-1 computers?
The pre-sale material described the Hatfield machine as one of 74 verified Apple-1 computers, a figure reported by the Boston Business Journal in 2026. The number of surviving boards that remain fully functional is much smaller, although the material for this sale does not establish a precise total. Rarity alone does not determine a price: condition, originality, documentation, signatures and included equipment all affect how collectors value an example.
What the Steve Jobs letter reveals
The exchange proposal captures a moment when Apple was moving from the Apple-1 to the Apple II. Jobs’ offer was practical rather than ceremonial: an Apple II 4K motherboard and $400 in return for Hatfield’s Apple-1. Hatfield’s decision to keep the older computer preserved both the hardware and a contemporaneous record of Apple’s attempt to address an early customer’s complaint.
For collectors, the letter links the physical board to a specific interaction with Apple’s leadership. That connection is stronger than an undated autograph or an ownership story that cannot be documented.
What buyers should examine in a historic-computer auction
- Working condition: Ask whether the machine was demonstrated, repaired or restored, and which components are original.
- Provenance: Look for named owners, dated correspondence and a continuous chain of custody.
- Authenticity of signatures: Determine who signed the board, when the signature was obtained and whether supporting documentation exists.
- Completeness: Period monitors, keyboards and cassette equipment can materially change the appeal of a computer originally sold as a board.
- Price basis: Check whether an auction figure includes the buyer’s premium before comparing it with another sale.
Bottom line on the $1.15 million Apple-1
The Hatfield Apple-1 earned its price through a combination of rarity and evidence: it worked, carried Steve Wozniak’s signature, came with period accessories, and included Steve Jobs’ January 1978 exchange letter. Its $1,148,200 Bonhams result is the record for a commercially sold Apple-1, while the $2.75 million “Celebration” prototype remains the higher Apple-1-related sale reported for 2026.
