A 1970 Ford Mustang Mach 1 Twister Special reportedly resurfaced in 2024 after its last registration in 1984. The automatic 428 Super Cobra Jet example was described as unusually well preserved, with an Arkansas inspection sticker and plates dating from 1984. Those details come from SlashGear’s report; the car’s identity, ownership history and originality have not been independently verified here. SlashGear’s account concerns one specific garage find, not every car carrying the Twister Special name.
What is a 1970 Mustang Twister Special?
The Twister Special was a regional promotion based on the Mustang Mach 1, sold through Ford’s Kansas City sales district rather than offered as a regular nationwide Mustang trim. Its name and graphics referenced the tornado-prone region. MotorTrend says the side stripes drew on a design developed for a planned pace-car program, with a tornado decal on the rear quarter; the cars also had a functional Shaker hood scoop. MotorTrend’s history attributes the promotion’s origins to a planned American Raceways Inc. pace-car program that did not proceed as intended, after which Kansas City adopted the special.

The American Muscle Car Museum says the cars debuted at Ford’s Total Performance Day at Kansas City International Raceway on November 7, 1969. It describes the Mustang run as 96 Grabber Orange Mach 1s, divided between 428 Super Cobra Jet and 351 Cleveland 4V engines. The museum’s account provides the Mustang production figure and engine families.

The reported production figure is 96 Mustang Mach 1 Twister Specials. That number is specific to the Mustangs: MotorTrend separately reports that 90 Calypso Coral 429 SCJ Torino Cobras appeared at the same debut event, and those Torinos should not be counted as Twister Special Mustangs. The figures come from the museum and MotorTrend.
#1 Best Overall
- Die-cast metal body with plastic parts
- Opening doors and engine compartment
- Full functioning steering
- Four- wheel suspension
- Detailed chassis with separate exhaust system
The museum says the Mustang run included both 428 Super Cobra Jet and 351 Cleveland 4V engines, with C6 automatic or four-speed manual transmissions. The sources cited here do not establish how many cars were built in each engine-and-transmission combination, so a particular combination should be verified from that car’s documentation rather than inferred from the overall count.
Was the Twister Special really parked for 40 years?
SlashGear reports that the featured car last had registration in 1984 and resurfaced in 2024. That is the basis for the “40-year” description; it is a rounded interval between those reported dates, not proof that the Mustang sat continuously untouched or unmoved for exactly four decades. The article also describes it as a one-owner car, an automatic 428 Super Cobra Jet example, and notably original, but those are report-based claims rather than independently confirmed provenance or an inspection finding. Its 1984 Arkansas sticker and plates are reported as clues to the timeline, not a complete registration history. SlashGear’s report is the source for the find and its condition description.

How can a specific Twister Special be authenticated?
Rarity and period graphics alone do not establish that a car left the factory as a Twister Special. Authentication should connect the individual Mustang’s identification and factory records with its equipment and surviving components.
Quick wins for a faster PC:
Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minuteDriver Scan →Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errorsFree Scan →- Match the car to its records. Check the VIN and factory build documentation, including the original engine and transmission specification and the Kansas City district ordering information where recorded.
- Look for special-order evidence. A reproduced Marti Report for a different Twister Special, VIN 0F05R118914, records a Dearborn-built October 1969 Mach I with 428 Super Cobra Jet/Drag Pack, Grabber Orange paint, Kansas City DSO and “96 With Twister Special.” That example shows the kind of documentary trail available, but it is not evidence for the newly reported garage find. The report is reproduced here.
- Compare components with the build record. Engine, transmission, paint, graphics and other surviving parts should be assessed against documented factory specifications. Original-looking details can support a case, but they do not replace records or establish that every component is original.
Is this the museum car or the Mecum auction car?
No. The 2024 garage find is a separate reported car from the American Muscle Car Museum’s 428-powered Twister Special and from a different 1970 Twister Special offered in Mecum’s January 2023 Kissimmee auction. Mecum states that auction descriptions and photographs come from the consignor and are not verified or guaranteed by the auction house. Neither listing should be treated as documentation for the newly reported Mustang. See the museum description and Mecum listing and disclaimer.
