An SEO pulse report should keep three measurements separate: Google ranking positions, whether an AI system mentions your brand, and whether it links to your site. Rank tracking tells you where a page appears for a defined search; AI-visibility tracking examines generated answers; citation tracking records the links or source references behind those answers.

The most useful setup combines location- and device-specific rank history with tagged prompts, competitor context, a stated checking schedule and a record of visible and background citations. Without those distinctions, one blended “visibility” score can conceal important changes.

What the three data layers measure

Layer What it records What it cannot prove by itself
Conventional rank data Keyword position on Google by country, device and, where configured, city; current position, change since the previous check, best-ever position, 30-day trend, intent, tags and competitor positions. Whether an AI answer will mention the brand or cite a page.
AI mentions The brand name appearing in an AI-generated response. LLM Pulse defines a mention as the brand name appearing in the response text. That the answer contains a clickable link or that the cited page is the brand’s preferred URL.
AI citations A visible website link or a background source reference returned by the AI system. Citation rate counts responses that cite the site. A universal ranking comparable to a Google result position. Only visible links have a displayed citation position; background citations do not.

Google position and AI visibility are therefore complementary, not interchangeable. A page can rank well for a keyword yet be absent from an answer, while a brand can be mentioned in an answer without receiving a visible link.

What ChatGPT and AI-search tags mean

Tags are grouping labels, not a special ChatGPT ranking signal. They let a dashboard compare a controlled slice of data instead of blending unrelated queries into one average.

Useful tag dimensions

  • Prompt or keyword theme: product category, problem, feature or comparison.
  • Intent: informational, commercial, navigational or transactional.
  • Geography: country, language and, for rank tracking, optional city.
  • Campaign or owner: a launch, content hub, client account or reporting period.
  • Model or query type: ChatGPT, Perplexity, Gemini, Google AI Mode or Google AI Overviews, where the tracker supports that source.

LLM Pulse exposes filters for tags, query type, country and language. RankPulse uses tags to group tracked keywords. The labels are useful only when applied consistently: changing a tag halfway through a reporting period can make a trend look like a performance change.

Mentions, visible links and background citations

A mention is text

When an AI response names a company or product, it has produced a mention. The name may appear in a recommendation, explanation or comparison with no source link at all.

A citation is a source reference

A citation occurs when the AI returns the website as a visible link or as a background source reference. A visible link can be assigned a citation position in the response. A background citation has no displayed position, so it should not be treated as “rank 4” or folded into an average visible-link position.

Metrics to keep distinct

  • Mention count or rate: how often the brand appears in sampled responses.
  • Average mention position: where the brand is placed in responses, when the platform calculates that metric.
  • Citation rate: the share of sampled responses that cite the site.
  • Average visible citation position: the average position of links that users can see; background citations are excluded from this position calculation.

Report the sampling period, countries, languages, models and prompt set with every percentage. AI responses change over time, and a result from one prompt run is not a permanent property of the brand.

How the main SEO-pulse tools differ

Option Coverage and evidence Granularity Workflow and audience Pricing information
SEOPulse External SEO and AI-search audit; reports keyword ranking changes, detected issues and prioritized actions. Pro monitoring includes traditional SEO, page speed, schema markup and AI-search signals. Specific location and model fields are not stated on the cited product page. Free check for an initial report; weekly monitoring is aimed at small businesses. The site lists Pro at $20 per month on its 2026 page access; verify the current price before purchasing.
LLM Pulse Brand mentions, AI visibility score, average mention position, competitors and citation data across ChatGPT, Perplexity, Gemini, Google AI Mode and Google AI Overviews. Filters include tags, query type, country and language; citation reporting separates visible and background sources. Dashboard analysis and branded PDF exports suit recurring visibility and agency-style reporting. Plan or trial terms are not stated in the supplied product information.
RankPulse Google keyword positions, historical changes, best position, 30-day trends and competitor positions. Country, device and optional city, plus keyword tags and search intent. On-demand or scheduled daily checks; public read-only share links and an MCP server for ChatGPT, Claude, Cursor and similar assistants. Price or trial terms are not stated in the supplied product information.
SEO Pulse Chrome Extension Local technical checks for indexability, metadata, redirects, structured data, Core Web Vitals, robots controls and AI crawler access, including GPTBot and OAI-SearchBot. Page-level browser checks rather than a stated historical ranking or AI-response dataset. Useful for inspecting a page while browsing; the Chrome Web Store listing is a feature description, not independent evidence of ranking or AI-visibility accuracy. Price or trial terms are not stated in the supplied product information.

No independently dated, cross-vendor accuracy study is established for these products. Their published pages describe features and metric definitions, not a comparable audited benchmark, so an accuracy percentage would be misleading.

A practical setup for tracking Google and AI search together

  1. Define the query set. Record the exact Google keywords and AI prompts. Keep wording stable during a reporting period so a changed question is not mistaken for a changed result.
  2. Apply tags before collecting data. Tag each item by intent, topic, country, language, campaign and model or query type as appropriate.
  3. Configure conventional rank checks. In RankPulse, select country and device, add a city when local results matter, and choose on-demand checks or a daily schedule. Record competitor domains and search intent.
  4. Configure AI visibility checks. In LLM Pulse, filter by tags, query type, country and language, then review the supported AI sources separately rather than combining all models into one unexplained number.
  5. Inspect the response evidence. Log whether each answer contains a mention, a visible link, a background citation, both, or neither. Capture visible citation position only for links that have a displayed position.
  6. Set a reporting cadence. Use a date range and repeat the same prompt set. Daily Google checks and periodic AI-response sampling answer different operational needs; state both cadences in the report.
  7. Export and annotate. Use public read-only links, PDF exports or the available MCP connection when they fit the audience. Add notes for major content, technical or campaign changes so the trend has an explanation.

Common reporting mistakes and fixes

  • One blended score: publish Google rank, mention rate and citation rate as separate columns.
  • Mention treated as citation: require a visible link or recorded background source before counting a citation.
  • Visible and background citations averaged together: keep background references in their own count because they have no visible position.
  • Geographies mixed together: compare like-for-like country, language, city and device segments.
  • Tags changed mid-period: preserve the original taxonomy or mark the date of the change.
  • Snapshot presented as a permanent result: show the check date, prompt set, model and cadence.
  • Technical audit mistaken for visibility proof: a browser extension can reveal crawl and markup conditions, but its listing does not establish ranking or AI-answer accuracy.

Which option fits which job?

Choose an audit-first workflow

Use SEOPulse when the immediate need is a small-business health check with prioritized technical and AI-search actions, followed by weekly monitoring. Treat the listed $20 monthly Pro price as time-sensitive.

Choose AI-visibility and citation analysis

Use LLM Pulse when the central question is how often a brand appears in generated answers, which competitors appear, and which visible or background sources are returned across several AI systems.

Choose detailed Google rank history

Use RankPulse when country, device, city, daily history, competitor positions and keyword-level tags are the primary requirements, or when an MCP connection is useful for assistant-based analysis.

Choose page-level technical inspection

Use the SEO Pulse Chrome Extension as a local checklist for indexability, metadata, structured data, Core Web Vitals, robots directives and AI crawler access. Pair it with a tracker when you need historical positions or response-level AI evidence.

What a decision-ready report should show

At minimum, include the exact keyword or prompt, tag values, country, language, device or city where relevant, model, check date, cadence, Google position history, mention status, citation type, visible citation position when available, and competitor context. This structure lets a reader tell whether a change came from search ranking, AI wording, source selection or a different sample.
