Kadyrov also said the truck had to be towed; the cause of the reported stoppage remains unknown.
What did Kadyrov say happened?
Fortune, reporting with Agence France-Presse (AFP) on September 20, 2024, said Kadyrov made the accusation in a Telegram post the previous day. The report attributed these words to him: “Now, recently, Musk remotely disabled the Cybertruck.” Kadyrov also said, “We had to tow the iron horse. How could you do that, Elon?” Fortune/AFP’s report documents his allegation; it is not independent confirmation of a remote shutdown or a technical diagnosis.

Did Musk give Kadyrov the Cybertruck?
Kadyrov said he received the vehicle from Musk. Fortune/AFP reported that Musk called this account a lie on X, and Futurism’s September 22, 2024 follow-up reproduced Musk’s denial that he had donated a Cybertruck to a Russian general. These reports do not independently establish how Kadyrov obtained the truck, so its provenance remains unresolved.

Fortune/AFP said Kadyrov had posted a video in August 2024 showing himself driving the electric truck with what appeared to be a machine gun mounted on its roof. The report also described his praise of its maneuverability and crew protection. Those are descriptions attributed to the reporting and Kadyrov, not independently verified details about the vehicle’s use.

Kadyrov claimed he sent the Cybertruck to Ukraine and that it performed well in combat. Futurism reported his later claim that two other Cybertrucks were unaffected and operating normally. Neither report independently verifies deployment, the condition of those vehicles, or the alleged shutdown. The reports also do not establish whether the truck stopped working as Kadyrov described, or why.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone. Was the Cybertruck remotely shut down?
The reviewed reporting leaves that question unanswered. It includes Kadyrov’s accusation and Musk’s denial of giving him the vehicle, but no Tesla statement, diagnostic record, technical explanation, or independent confirmation that a remote intervention occurred. It therefore does not support treating this incident as proof that Musk or Tesla remotely disabled the truck, or as a confirmed account of a specific Cybertruck remote-shutdown capability.
