Rakuten’s often-cited ¥400 billion bond figure is not a verified October 2026 sales total. It refers to Rakuten Group retail bonds that were scheduled for redemption in the first half of 2025. Rakuten later said those redemptions were completed on schedule and that interest-bearing debt had fallen by approximately ¥425 billion between the end of December 2024 and June 2025.
Rakuten Securities is now listing a separate yen-denominated domestic bond for retail investors. The listing shows a ¥1 million minimum purchase, maturity on April 28, 2032, a 100.00% purchase price and an A- rating from JCR. The final coupon, yield and any oversubscription figure were not stated in the listing information available for October 16, 2026.

What the ¥400 billion figure actually means
The ¥400 billion describes retail bonds Rakuten Group needed to redeem during the first half of 2025. It is a refinancing and maturity figure, not proof that investors placed ¥400 billion of orders for a new issue in October 2026.

He said: “Bond investors are very, very confident or building their confidence in our business.” That comment described management’s view of investor sentiment at the time; it did not publish an order-book total or a guaranteed amount of demand.

Rakuten’s debt position after the 2025 redemptions
Rakuten reported that the ¥400 billion of scheduled retail-bond redemptions were completed on schedule. The company also reported approximately ¥425 billion less total interest-bearing debt in June 2025 than at the end of December 2024. The two figures are related to the company’s funding position, but the ¥425 billion reduction is not itself a measure of bond orders or retail demand.
Rakuten’s January 2025 refinancing discussion took place while its mobile business was still generating losses. That context matters: narrower market spreads and stronger investor confidence did not eliminate the operating and refinancing risks associated with the mobile expansion.

The listing said final conditions were scheduled to be decided on October 16. A 100.00% purchase price means the bond was shown at par; it does not reveal the return an investor will receive without the final coupon and payment terms.
Did Rakuten’s retail bonds sell out?
There is no verified October 2026 sell-out or oversubscription figure in the available information. The January 2025 interview documented an intention to broaden sales to Japanese investors and described improving confidence, but intention and confidence are not the same as a published subscription result.
Investors should therefore distinguish three separate claims:
Rank #4
- Established: ¥400 billion of retail bonds were scheduled for redemption in the first half of 2025.
- Established: Rakuten said those redemptions were completed as scheduled.
- Not established: that the 2026 retail issue attracted a record number of orders or sold out.
What changed by Rakuten’s Q2 FY2026 update
Rakuten’s official Q2 FY2026 release reported consolidated revenue of ¥665.5 billion, described as a record Q2 result. It also said the company had achieved its first quarterly net income in six years and that funding for all 2026 bond redemptions had been secured.

Those statements cover a later reporting period than the January 2025 refinancing interview. They indicate that Rakuten’s funding schedule had been addressed by the Q2 FY2026 update, but they do not change the historical meaning of the ¥400 billion figure.

How Japanese retail investors can evaluate the issue
- Open the Rakuten Securities domestic-bond listing. Confirm that the issuer, maturity date and distribution window match the final notice rather than relying on an earlier summary.
- Read the final conditions notice. Check the coupon, yield, interest-payment dates, settlement date, seniority, redemption clauses and any tax information. These details were not all available in the October 16 listing.
- Verify the purchase amount. The displayed minimum was ¥1 million. Confirm the permitted order increments and whether the issue is still accepting applications when you place an order.
- Assess issuer risk and holding period. An A- JCR rating is a credit assessment, not a guarantee of repayment. The stated maturity is April 28, 2032, so an investor should consider whether the money can remain committed until then.
- Submit the order through the brokerage’s application flow. Keep the order confirmation and final terms. If demand exceeds the amount available, the final notice should explain allocation; no October 2026 allocation result was established here.
Risks and comparison points
A meaningful comparison with another Japanese corporate bond requires more than the headline purchase price. Investors should compare the issuer rating, final coupon and yield, maturity, minimum investment, seniority, use of proceeds or refinancing purpose, and whether the bond is distributed to retail customers or sold only to institutions.
- Credit risk: Rakuten’s financial position and business performance can change before 2032. The A- rating is current information, not a promise that the rating will remain unchanged.
- Interest-rate risk: If market rates rise after purchase, the bond’s market value may fall before maturity.
- Liquidity risk: A retail distribution channel does not guarantee that an investor can sell at par, or sell quickly, before maturity.
- Business risk: The mobile business was still loss-making in the January 2025 coverage, even as management reported improving confidence and tighter spreads.
- Information risk: The coupon, yield and demand multiple must come from the final pricing notice; they cannot be inferred from the ¥400 billion redemption figure.
The practical takeaway
Rakuten’s funding story has two distinct chapters. The ¥400 billion figure belongs to retail-bond redemptions in the first half of 2025, followed by a reported ¥425 billion reduction in interest-bearing debt by June. The 2026 domestic bond is a separate offering with a ¥1 million minimum, April 28, 2032 maturity, par purchase price and A- JCR rating. Whether it offered an unusually high coupon or attracted record retail demand could only be determined from the final conditions and subscription results, neither of which was established in the available October 16 listing.
