For garden watering and a straightforward setup, a water butt is usually the practical choice. A larger rainwater harvesting system is worth considering when you have regular non-drinking household demand—such as toilet flushing—and room and budget for a tank, pump, overflow and more involved installation.
What is the difference?
A water butt is a basic rainwater harvesting system: it collects runoff from a roof gutter and downpipe and stores it, usually for garden watering. A larger system adds storage and distribution equipment so collected water can serve more uses around the home. The extra capacity and plumbing can make it useful for regular non-potable demand, but also make it more complex to install and maintain.

Rainwater from roofs should be treated as non-potable. The Environment Agency’s 2010 domestic guide covers uses such as garden watering, toilet flushing and laundry—not drinking, food preparation or personal hygiene.

Which option fits your needs?
| Consideration | Water butt | Larger rainwater harvesting system |
|---|---|---|
| Typical uses | Garden watering and similar outdoor tasks | Regular non-potable demand, potentially including toilet flushing or laundry |
| Setup | Gutter/downpipe connection, filter, stable base, tap and overflow arrangement | Tank, pump and distribution equipment; indoor uses need more careful design |
| Space and retrofit | Often easier to place by a downpipe, if there is room for a firm, level base | May need more space and specialist work; underground tanks and retrofits can be difficult |
| Maintenance | Clear gutters and filter; keep the butt covered and clean it as needed | Maintain the tank, filters, pump and distribution system as directed by the system designer |
| Financial considerations | Less complex, but storage is limited | More initial and installation complexity; mains-water reduction depends on actual use and tariffs |

- Function: Rain Barrel cover for outside use helps prevent the accumulation of debris ,keeps the mosquitoes out and doesn’t allow them to lay their eggs in the water.
- Easy to Install: Simply put the fine-meshed net over the water buckets and fix it with the help of the drawstring.
- High Quality: Buckets Mesh Cover is made of high-quality transparent mesh cloth and PE material.resistant for all seasons.Rain Barrel Screen allows the water in,
- Dimensions (Ø): The stretched size is 95 cm.suitable for all rain barrels with a diameter of up to 80 cm. suitable for all rain barrels with a diameter of up to 80 cm.
- Drawstring Design: With practical drawstring, simple and convenient. It can be better connected to a smaller diameter rain barrel to prevent being blown away by the wind.
Choose a water butt for garden watering
A butt is a good fit when your main goal is keeping rainwater for outdoor use and you can site it beside a suitable downpipe. The Royal Horticultural Society’s practical advice recommends a firm, level stand, a debris filter and a close-fitting lid. A cover helps discourage algae and keeps rain-borne plant-disease spores out; clear gutters to reduce the organic debris entering the system.
You can link multiple butts to increase storage. If you want to use a hose, a pump may be needed to improve pressure. If stored water smells, the RHS advises emptying and cleaning the butt rather than adding chemicals.

Consider a larger system for regular household demand
If you want harvested water to supply toilets or other indoor non-potable uses, plan the system around those uses before choosing equipment. Tank location, roof catchment, regular demand, overflow destination, pump, distribution, water quality and maintenance all matter. Government guidance notes that larger systems can be expensive, difficult to retrofit and need an overflow to a drain or soakaway; it recommends specialist advice for toilet-flushing installations. See the government guidance for context.

What to check before installing
For a water butt
- Confirm there is a suitable gutter and downpipe, and enough room for the butt.
- Make sure the base will stay firm and level when the container is full.
- Plan how runoff will enter, how you will draw water, and where excess water will go.
- Keep the gutter and filter clear; cover and clean the butt as needed.
For a larger system
- List the intended uses and estimate whether they create regular demand for non-potable water.
- Assess the available roof catchment, tank location and overflow route.
- Ask how the pump, filters and distribution will be maintained and how the system will be installed or connected to existing plumbing.
- Get system-specific advice, especially for indoor uses or a retrofit.
England’s national SuDS standards say to consider rainwater harvesting where non-potable demand and a suitable contributing catchment can deliver safe and efficient savings, where landscape irrigation is needed, or where development is in an area identified as seriously water stressed. They reference BS EN 16941 for system design. These are design considerations, not a guarantee that a particular home will save money.

Can rainwater harvesting reduce your water bill?
It may reduce mains-water use in a metered household if harvested rainwater actually replaces water that would otherwise come from the mains. The result depends on rainfall and roof catchment, how much water the household uses, the system’s capacity and cost, and the local tariff. Without those details, a fixed saving or payback period would be misleading.

The Environment Agency’s regulatory position statement applies to England. It describes harvested rainwater as water collected from roofs or other above-ground surfaces through above-ground pipes and tanks, isolated from inland waters or groundwater. Under the statement, an abstraction licence is not needed for water consisting only of harvested rainwater in the described circumstances. A licence may be needed if rainwater is combined with sources such as a watercourse, land drainage or underground strata in a reservoir system that discharges to inland waters.

- Cut Household Water Expenses: This foldable PVC rain water collection barrel offers an sustainable way to recycle rainwater captured from gutter downspouts. The collected rainwater works perfectly for garden irrigation, lawn watering and car washing. Statistical data proves that using this water barrel for garden can slash your annual tap water fees by up to 40%, bringing obvious cost savings for every family
- Winter-ready Crackproof PVC Build: The rain barrels to collect rainwater from gutter are constructed with sturdy PVC support frames and corrosion-proof PVC mesh fabric. The special PVC raw material delivers excellent cold resistance, so the water barrel with lid can stay outdoors through frigid winters without performance decline. Compared with rigid traditional rain barrels, our PVC water barrel for garden resists cracking and boasts longer service life for years of outdoor use
- Double Sealing Ring Total Leakproof System: Every spigot and outflow valve equipped on the rain water collection barrel comes paired with two silicone rubber sealing rings. You can mount one ring inside the barrel wall and another outside the wall to form double-sided sealing, thoroughly stopping any water seepage. The top mesh cover of the water barrel with lid filters out fallen leaves, floating debris and dirt, keeping your stored rainwater clean and free of debris
- Collapsible Compact Design For Easy Storage: This foldable rain barrel features a lightweight collapsible structure that greatly reduces its occupied space when not in use. The rain barrels to collect rainwater from gutter can be folded flat effortlessly, allowing you to store the water barrel for garden inside garages, storage closets or utility rooms without taking up much room. When you need to collect rainwater again, quick simple assembly enables repeated long-term use
- Multi-Capacity Optional & Interconnectable Structure: This water barrel with lid provides abundant capacity choices including 50, 66, 100, 132 and 200 Gallon to match different household rainwater storage demands. Simply place the rain water collection barrel under your gutter downspout, then rainwater will flow into the barrel through the top filter mesh. Each foldable PVC rain barrel is pre-fitted with a dedicated outflow valve, which supports linking multiple rain barrels to collect rainwater from gutter in series to expand your total rainwater storage volume.
If your system combines water sources, has an unusual arrangement or is outside England, check the current requirements with the relevant authority. The Environment Agency characterizes rainwater harvesting as “an efficient way to use water,” but that does not establish a specific saving for an individual household.
