Indian Railways’ Productivity Linked Bonus (PLB) is a 78-day payment for eligible non-gazetted railway employees. For the current FY 2025-26 announcement, the maximum is ₹17,951 when the wage used for calculation reaches the notified ceiling. Railway Protection Force (RPF) and Railway Protection Special Force (RPSF) personnel are excluded. The payment is normally sent through the same channel as salary before the Durga Puja/Dussehra holidays, but the orders do not set one common credit date for every railway unit.

The Railway Board’s operative order also allows an eligible State Railway Provident Fund subscriber to place all or part of the admissible bonus into the SRPF account. That is an optional deposit, not an automatic deduction. If an overpayment is later found, recovery is handled under the Board’s general recovery instructions; it is not automatically waived because the payment was called a bonus.

What is the railway bonus?

The payment is called Productivity Linked Bonus (PLB). It is an annual bonus sanctioned for a defined group of railway employees under a Railway Board order and the Union Cabinet’s yearly approval. The current announcement covers FY 2025-26, while the latest detailed Railway Board order available for the operative calculation and payment language covers FY 2024-25. Annual orders can change, so a later Railway Board clarification for FY 2025-26 would take priority over an older order.

The FY 2025-26 Cabinet announcement records approval for 1,140,770 railway employees and a total financial outlay of ₹2,009.61 crore. It repeats the 78-day basis and the ₹17,951 maximum. Those figures describe the sanctioned scheme, not a guaranteed identical payment for every employee.

Who is eligible for the railway bonus?

The core eligibility group is eligible non-gazetted Railway employees. The Railway Board wording expressly excludes all RPF and RPSF personnel. Eligibility is therefore determined by the employee’s category and service record under the annual order, not simply by working somewhere in the railway organisation.

Employee or service situation How the order treats it
Eligible non-gazetted Railway employee Covered by the PLB sanction, subject to the order’s qualifying conditions.
RPF or RPSF personnel Expressly excluded from this PLB order.
Part-time employee paid on a nominal fixed payment Identified as excluded in the broader bonus framework.
Employee suspended during the financial year The normal full amount does not automatically apply; calculation follows the standing instructions for that case.
Employee who quit service, retired or died during the financial year The normal qualifying-group amount does not automatically apply; the applicable standing instructions determine the admissible amount.
Employee on leave The standard treatment applies where the admissible leave salary was not less than leave on average pay; other leave situations require the standing instructions to be applied.

The quoted order describes the normal qualifying group as employees who were not suspended, did not quit service, retire or die during the financial year, and were not in a leave situation that fails the leave-salary condition. A person outside that group is not necessarily disqualified from every payment, but the amount must be worked out under the relevant standing instructions rather than assumed to be ₹17,951.

What “non-gazetted” means in practice

“Non-gazetted” is an employment classification used in the railway service rules. A staff member should verify the classification in the establishment or payroll record instead of relying on job title, grade shorthand or workplace location. The annual order is the controlling document for the particular financial year.

Does service length decide eligibility?

The cited PLB order specifies the treatment of suspension, separation, retirement, death and qualifying leave, but it does not provide a universal one-line service-length test for every possible case. Where one of those events occurred, the employee’s establishment section must apply the standing instructions to the actual dates and admissible salary.

How is 78 days’ railway bonus calculated?

PLB is stated as 78 days’ wages. The order says that there is no wage ceiling for eligibility, but if the wages used for the calculation exceed ₹7,000 per month, the bonus is calculated as if those wages were ₹7,000 per month. This ceiling affects the amount, not whether a person belongs to the eligible category.

Calculation point Rule
Bonus period 78 days’ wages for the financial year covered by the order.
Wage ceiling for calculation Wages above ₹7,000 per month are treated as ₹7,000 per month.
Published maximum ₹17,951 for the normal qualifying group under the cited order and the FY 2025-26 announcement.
Employees with a qualifying event Suspension, leaving service, retirement, death or certain leave conditions are calculated under the standing instructions rather than assumed to receive the maximum.

The published maximum of ₹17,951 is the figure to use when asking, “How much is the 78 days railway bonus?” It is safer than trying to reproduce the result by dividing a monthly wage by an assumed number of days, because the notified PLB calculation and qualifying-service rules control the payroll result.

Why a wage above ₹7,000 does not increase the bonus

An employee may have a monthly wage above ₹7,000 and still be eligible. The order simply substitutes ₹7,000 as the wage for calculating PLB. Consequently, a higher ordinary wage does not produce a bonus above the notified maximum.

Why two employees may receive different amounts

Differences can arise from the wage figure admitted under the scheme and from service events during the financial year. A person in the normal qualifying group may receive the published maximum, while someone affected by suspension, separation, retirement, death or non-qualifying leave can have a different admissible amount under the standing instructions.

When will the railway bonus be credited?

For FY 2025-26, the Union Cabinet announcement says PLB is paid before the Durga Puja/Dussehra holidays. The Railway Board’s detailed direction for FY 2024-25 says disbursement must be made “in the same mode as payment of salary, on priority basis.”

That wording gives a practical answer to “Railway bonus kab milega?”: watch the normal salary bank account or salary payment channel, and expect the department to prioritise the credit before the holiday period. It does not establish one universal calendar date for every zone, division, workshop or production unit. Internal processing, bill preparation and bank schedules can make the visible credit date differ between units.

What to check if the credit has not appeared

  1. Confirm that your employee category is covered and that you are not in the RPF/RPSF exclusion.
  2. Check whether your unit has issued the annual PLB bill or payment notice.
  3. Look at the same bank account or salary channel used for your regular pay.
  4. Ask the establishment or accounts section whether your service record contains a suspension, separation, retirement, death or leave entry requiring a separate calculation.
  5. Compare the credited amount with the admissible wage and the ₹7,000 calculation ceiling, rather than assuming every employee must receive ₹17,951.

Will the bonus come with salary?

The order requires the FY 2024-25 PLB to be paid in the same mode as salary and on a priority basis. In practical terms, this generally means the normal payroll bank channel rather than a separate cash process. The order does not promise that the bonus will appear in the same transaction as the monthly salary; a separate payroll credit through the same channel is possible.

Keep the payslip, bank credit entry and any PLB statement. These records show the gross amount, any optional SRPF transfer or other payroll treatment and the financial year to which the payment relates.

Are deductions made from railway bonus?

State Railway Provident Fund deposit

The Railway Board order expressly says that an eligible State Railway Provident Fund subscriber may, if they so desire, deposit the whole or part of the admissible PLB in the subscriber’s SRPF account. This is an employee choice. It should not be described as an automatic deduction from everyone’s bonus.

  • Whole amount: the employee may elect to place the entire admissible PLB into SRPF.
  • Part of the amount: the employee may elect to transfer only a portion.
  • No election: the order does not make an SRPF transfer compulsory merely because the employee is an SRPF subscriber.

The unit’s payroll procedure may require an election or form before the bill is processed. Ask the accounts section for the applicable deadline and retain a copy of the instruction or acknowledgement.

Income-tax withholding

The cited PLB orders do not provide an employee-specific income-tax percentage, a universal withholding amount or a guaranteed net-pay figure. Therefore, no fixed tax deduction can be stated from these orders alone. The amount shown on an individual payslip depends on the payroll and tax rules applied to that employee’s circumstances. For the actual deduction, use the payslip and seek clarification from the railway payroll or tax office rather than applying a generic percentage.

Can railway bonus be recovered from salary?

Yes, an overpaid amount can be subject to recovery under the Railway Board’s general instructions. The fact that the payment was PLB does not create an automatic immunity from recovery. A recovery should be based on the applicable rules and the employee’s recorded circumstances, not on an unexplained reduction in a later payslip.

Time limit for issuing the recovery order

Railway Board guidance in RBE No. 64/2024 says the recovery order for an overpayment should be issued within one month from detection. “Detection” is the point at which the department identifies the overpayment; it is not necessarily the date on which the original bonus was credited.

When can recovery be waived?

The same guidance allows the Railway Board to waive recovery of up to ₹2,00,000 per individual with the concurrence of Member Finance and approval of the Chairman and CEO. Larger cases continue to be referred to the Department of Expenditure with the required concurrence and approval.

Approval is not automatic. The authority must examine the applicable recovery instructions, whether serious negligence occurred, whether a rule or procedural defect caused the loss and whether the circumstances fall within an established government exemption. An employee cannot assume that a mistaken bonus payment will be waived simply because the employee did not create the payroll error.

What to do after receiving a recovery notice

  1. Request the written calculation showing the original admissible PLB, the amount paid and the amount alleged to be overpaid.
  2. Check the financial year, employee category, wage used, service events and any SRPF election.
  3. Verify when the department says the overpayment was detected and whether the recovery order was issued within the stated one-month period.
  4. Submit relevant service, leave, retirement or payroll records through the prescribed departmental channel.
  5. If the amount is within ₹2,00,000, ask whether the case has been examined under the Railway Board’s waiver route; this is a request for consideration, not a guaranteed result.

A practical railway-bonus checklist

  • Identify the financial year named in the sanction order.
  • Confirm non-gazetted status and check the RPF/RPSF exclusion.
  • Check whether part-time nominal-fixed-payment rules apply.
  • Review suspension, resignation or other separation, retirement, death and leave records for the relevant year.
  • Confirm the admissible wage and apply the ₹7,000 monthly calculation ceiling.
  • Use ₹17,951 only as the published maximum for the normal qualifying group, not as an automatic entitlement for every employee.
  • Monitor the normal salary payment channel before the Durga Puja/Dussehra holiday period.
  • Record any voluntary whole-or-part SRPF deposit separately from mandatory payroll deductions.
  • Read the payslip for the actual tax or other withholding; the PLB order does not supply a universal tax percentage.
  • If a recovery notice arrives, obtain the written basis and respond with the relevant records.

What could change in a later annual order?

A future PLB announcement may alter the employee categories covered, exclusions, number of bonus days, wage ceiling, maximum amount, treatment of service events, payment deadline or salary channel. It may also restate the SRPF option or cross-reference different recovery instructions. For any later year, compare those specific items with the new Railway Board order instead of carrying forward the FY 2025-26 figures automatically.
