Railcar Types Explained: Which Cars Carry Grain, Fertilizer, and Other Bulk Goods?

Covered hopper cars carry most grain and dry fertilizer. Their enclosed bodies keep rain out, while roof hatches allow top loading and bottom outlets allow gravity discharge. Open hoppers carry weather-tolerant heavy bulk such as coal, stone, sand and ore. Tank cars carry liquids and gases, including chemicals, petroleum and liquid fertilizer. Boxcars protect packaged freight, gondolas carry open-top loads such as scrap and steel, and flatcars handle oversized cargo.

The commodity alone does not always identify the car. Density, cubic volume, unloading equipment, tank specifications, linings, fittings, regulations and the receiving facility all affect the assignment.

Quick guide to the main railcar types

Railcar Typical cargo Why this car fits Loading and unloading clues
Covered hopper Grain, corn, wheat, soybeans, dry fertilizer, flour, salt, sugar, clay, lime, cement, soda ash and plastic pellets Dry, flowable solids that need protection from weather Roof hatches and bottom gravity outlets
Open hopper Coal, coke, stone, sand, ore, gravel and some scrap Dense bulk that can tolerate exposure Open top and bottom discharge gates
Tank car Chemicals, petroleum, gases and liquid fertilizer Liquids or gases require a sealed pressure or non-pressure tank designed for the commodity Top or bottom fittings, valves and specification-specific safety hardware
Boxcar Paper, appliances, packaged goods, building materials and some food products Enclosed general-freight space protects packaged cargo Side doors; loading is usually by pallet, forklift or conveyor
Gondola Scrap metal, gravel, coal, ore, wood chips and steel coils Open-top access suits bulky or rugged loads Side or bottom unloading varies by design
Flatcar Steel beams, lumber, machinery, pipes, plywood and drywall Open deck accommodates long, tall or irregular freight Chains, stakes, blocking and other securement rather than an enclosed body
Centerbeam car Lumber, drywall and related building products Center partition supports bundled building materials Open loading from the sides, with specialized load restraints

These are typical assignments, not absolute rules. A shipper’s contract, a facility’s unloading pit, the material’s bulk density and applicable federal or industry requirements can change the choice.

Why covered hoppers carry grain and dry fertilizer

A covered hopper is the standard answer to “Which railcar carries grain?” It combines a weather-tight shell with a high-volume interior and several discharge bays underneath. Grain and dry fertilizer are free-flowing solids: they can be loaded through roof hatches and released through gates into a pit, conveyor or truck-loading system.

Weather protection is the defining feature

Rain can spoil grain, dissolve fertilizer or create caking that blocks unloading equipment. The roof and hatch covers prevent that exposure during transit and while the car is waiting in a terminal. The enclosure also keeps outside contaminants away from food and agricultural products.

What covered hoppers commonly carry

  • Grain, including corn, wheat and soybeans
  • Dry fertilizer, including granular products
  • Flour, salt and sugar
  • Clay, lime, cement and soda ash
  • Plastic pellets and other dry, flowable industrial solids

The exact commodity depends on the car’s interior, outlet arrangement, cleanliness requirements and the loading and unloading equipment at both ends. A car suitable for food-grade grain may not be assigned to a chemically aggressive product, and a shipper may require cleaning before changing commodities.

How to recognize one

Look for a long, enclosed body with a row of roof hatches and several hopper-shaped bays below. A rounded “Center Flow” body is a familiar profile on many grain cars. The ACF4600 prototype description, for example, identifies a rounded body and gravity unloading—useful visual clues when identifying a grain covered hopper, though the silhouette alone cannot prove the current load.

Dry fertilizer is not liquid fertilizer

“Fertilizer car” can mean two different equipment problems. Granular or powdered fertilizer normally travels in a covered hopper. Liquid fertilizer travels in a tank car that has the correct tank specification, valves, fittings and safety controls. Treating both as the same type of car can lead to an incompatible loading system or a serious handling hazard.

When an open hopper is the right choice

Open hoppers carry heavy bulk that does not require a dry, sealed environment. Their open tops make loading fast with buckets, loaders or conveyor belts, and their bottom gates permit rapid discharge into a rotary dumper, pit or conveyor.

Typical open-hopper cargo

  • Coal and coke
  • Stone, sand and gravel
  • Iron ore and other ores
  • Some forms of scrap metal

Exposure is acceptable when moisture does not materially damage the product or when the cargo is destined for processing. The same open design that simplifies loading also leaves the load vulnerable to rain, snow, windblown contamination and loss of fine material, so it is a poor substitute for a covered hopper when dryness matters.

Open hopper versus gondola

Both are open-top cars, but an open hopper has sloped sides and dedicated bottom discharge gates for bulk material. A gondola is more like a deep open box; it is better for large pieces, scrap, coils or loads that are shoveled, clamshell-loaded or unloaded from the side. Some gondolas have bottom doors, but the car’s design and contract—not the name alone—determine the unloading method.

Tank cars: liquids, gases and liquid fertilizer

Tank cars are built around a cylindrical tank rather than a box or hopper. They carry liquids and gases, including chemicals, petroleum products and liquid fertilizer. The tank’s specification controls permissible pressure, materials, wall thickness, fittings and operating procedures.

Why the specification matters

The Association of American Railroads’ tank-car guidance describes design considerations including tank type, material thickness, fittings, welding, inspection, maintenance and repair. Those features are selected for the commodity and service. A tank car’s paint, reporting marks or general shape is not enough to identify what it carries.

Not every tank car carries a hazardous material

Many tank-car commodities are regulated, but AAR notes that tank cars also carry nonregulated products. The correct conclusion from seeing a tank car is “liquid or gas service,” not automatically “hazardous material.” Shipping papers, placards and operating rules provide the authoritative information for a particular movement.

Liquid fertilizer requires different equipment from dry fertilizer

Liquid products cannot be poured into a covered hopper. They require a tank car with compatible materials, pressure rating, valves, emergency fittings and a facility designed for hose or pipe connections. A terminal that handles granular fertilizer may have no safe way to receive liquid product.

Boxcars protect packaged freight

Boxcars are enclosed rectangular cars with side doors. They are used for paper, appliances, packaged goods and building materials that need protection from weather, theft or handling damage but do not flow through hopper outlets.

Insulated boxcars add thermal protection for food products, canned goods, beer and wine. They are not refrigerated cars by definition; insulation slows temperature change, while a refrigerated design adds active cooling. Loading usually involves pallets, forklifts, conveyors or other packaged-freight equipment rather than a top hatch and gravity outlet.

Gondolas carry open-top, rugged loads

Gondolas have low or high sides and no fixed roof. Common cargoes include scrap metal, gravel, coal, ores, wood chips and steel coils. A low-side gondola can be loaded with large pieces or coils; a higher-sided version holds loose bulk. Interior fixtures, side stakes and discharge doors vary, so two gondolas in the same train may serve different commodities.

For scrap, the open top lets cranes and magnets load irregular pieces quickly. For steel coils, cradles or coil wells keep heavy rolls stable. These cars protect neither the product nor workers from weather in the way a covered hopper does, so the exposed design is chosen only when the cargo and process allow it.

Flatcars and centerbeam cars handle oversized building materials

A flatcar is an open deck with no enclosing sides or roof. It carries steel beams, lumber, machinery, pipes, plywood, drywall and other freight that is too long, tall or irregular for a boxcar. The shipper must engineer blocking, bracing, tie-downs and clearance for bridges, tunnels and trackside structures.

Centerbeam cars are specialized flatcars with a vertical center partition. Bundles of lumber, drywall and related building products are loaded on both sides of the beam, which helps distribute the weight and provides attachment points for securement systems. They are not general-purpose grain or fertilizer cars; their geometry is optimized for bundled sheet and dimensional building products.

  1. Classify the material. Decide whether it is a dry solid, liquid, gas, packaged item or oversized piece. Dry solids point toward hoppers; liquids and gases point toward tank cars.
  2. Check weather sensitivity. Grain, flour, sugar and dry fertilizer generally need a covered body. Coal, stone and ore may tolerate an open top.
  3. Match the discharge method. Flowable solids need compatible hopper outlets and a receiving pit or conveyor. Liquids need valves, hoses and a tank-unloading station. Large pieces may require a crane, magnet or side unloading.
  4. Compare density and cubic volume. A dense mineral can reach the car’s weight limit before the interior is full. A lighter agricultural product may need more cubic capacity. Loading plans must satisfy both weight and volume limits.
  5. Verify material compatibility. Linings, stainless or specialty materials, seals and cleanliness standards matter for chemicals, food products and corrosive fertilizers.
  6. Confirm facility and regulatory requirements. The origin and destination must have the right track geometry, loading equipment, unloading pit, grounding, inspection process and documentation.
  7. Check the shipper’s equipment agreement. Railroads and shippers may assign specific car series, outlet arrangements or cleaning standards even when another car appears physically suitable.

Loading and unloading hardware can identify a car’s intended service

Hardware often gives a better clue than paint or a logo. Covered hoppers have roof hatches and bottom outlets; the number and spacing of bays indicate how the product is distributed during discharge. Open hoppers have large top openings and robust bottom gates. Tank cars have manways, valves, pressure-relief devices and other fittings that correspond to their specifications.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Facilities are designed around those interfaces. A grain elevator may use a pit that aligns with multiple covered-hopper outlets. A liquid terminal may connect hoses to a tank car’s fittings. A steel mill may use overhead cranes for gondolas or flatcars. If the car and facility do not match, unloading can be slow, unsafe or impossible even when the commodity itself seems appropriate.

Safety, inspection and regulatory limits

All railcars must meet applicable federal inspection and safety requirements. Tank cars receive especially detailed attention because pressure, fittings, welds and emergency hardware affect containment. Loading crews must stay within gross-weight, axle-load and securement limits, and they must follow commodity-specific procedures.

Do not infer a load from a car’s color. Do not open a hatch, operate a valve or approach a damaged car unless you are authorized and trained. Placards, shipping papers and railroad instructions—not visual guesses—identify regulated contents and the actions required after a derailment or release.

How large is the grain-car fleet?

Grain moves in a fleet large enough to shape railroad planning. The Association of American Railroads reported 1.5 million U.S. Class I grain carloads in 2022 and about 273,000 North American grain cars in early 2023. AAR also describes a typical year as roughly 1.6 million carloads of grain and other farm products.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Its agriculture reporting says corn represented 58% of rail grain carloads in 2025 and that the North American grain fleet exceeded 290,000 cars by the end of 2025. These figures are fleet and traffic totals for the stated periods, not a guarantee that a particular covered hopper is carrying corn or any other single commodity.

Common identification mistakes

“Every covered hopper carries grain”

No. Covered hoppers also carry fertilizer, flour, salt, sugar, clay, lime, cement, soda ash and plastic pellets. The interior, outlet arrangement, cleanliness and shipper assignment determine service.

“Every hopper is a coal car”

No. Open hoppers are common in coal and aggregate service, while covered hoppers handle dry products that need weather protection. The roof is the first important distinction.

“Every tank car contains hazardous material”

No. Tank cars carry both regulated and nonregulated liquids and gases. Only the car’s documentation, placards and operating information establish the specific contents.

“A gondola and an open hopper are interchangeable”

No. Their shapes and unloading systems differ. A hopper is optimized for bulk flow through bottom gates; a gondola is an open bin for large, irregular or crane-loaded cargo.

For model railroaders: visual clues in HO scale

An HO-scale covered-hopper model can reproduce the features that distinguish grain and fertilizer cars: a rounded or cylindrical-looking body, roof hatches, multiple bays and gravity outlets. The Athearn ACF4600 model represents a three-bay Center Flow car associated with grain, corn and similar bulk commodities. Its Trinity 5161 model represents a covered hopper used for agricultural products, sugar and dry chemicals, including potash service.

These models are useful for learning the equipment’s geometry, but a model’s paint scheme is not proof of a real car’s current load. Prototype assignments change with leasing, cleaning, repairs and shipper contracts.

Bottom line: match the cargo’s physical behavior to the car

Choose a covered hopper for dry, weather-sensitive, flowable solids such as grain and granular fertilizer. Choose an open hopper for dense bulk that can tolerate exposure, such as coal, stone, sand or ore. Choose a tank car for liquids and gases, including liquid fertilizer, and verify the exact specification and fittings. Use boxcars for packaged freight, gondolas for open-top rugged loads, and flatcars or centerbeams for oversized or bundled materials. The safest and most efficient choice is the one whose enclosure, capacity, unloading hardware and regulatory design match both the commodity and the facilities at each end of the journey.
