Raiden is the same continuing character in both games, but he is at radically different points in his life. In Metal Gear Solid 2: Sons of Liberty, he is a FOXHOUND operative on his first real mission, infiltrating the Big Shell despite having no genuine combat experience. In Metal Gear Rising: Revengeance, he is a former child soldier who has become a cyborg operative working for Maverick Securities.
The games also ask you to use him differently. MGS2 is built around stealth and infiltration, while Rising is an action game centered on combat, exploration and Raiden’s High-Frequency Blade. The contrast is deliberate character progression, not a replacement of one Raiden by another.

The short version
If you only need the answer, Raiden in Metal Gear Rising: Revengeance is the later version of the Raiden introduced in Metal Gear Solid 2: Sons of Liberty. He has the same identity and continuity, but the intervening story changes his experience, role and body.

Is Rising’s Raiden the same character?
Yes. Konami’s official MGS2 profile identifies Raiden as a FOXHOUND member whose Big Shell infiltration is his first actual mission. The profile also makes an important distinction: although he has extensive VR simulation training, he has not faced real combat before the operation.
The later Rising material describes that same character as a former child soldier transformed into a cyborg. His appearance, combat role and level of experience have changed, but the continuity is intentional. Treating Rising Raiden as a separate protagonist misses the central arc: a new operative is gradually forced to confront the consequences of his past and becomes a hardened combatant.
“The infiltration of the Big Shell is his first actual mission,” is the concise description from Konami’s official character profile. It is the clearest starting point for understanding why the early Raiden is uncertain and comparatively inexperienced.
Raiden in Metal Gear Solid 2: the inexperienced FOXHOUND operative
His starting point
Raiden enters MGS2 as a trained but untested soldier. FOXHOUND has prepared him through VR simulations, so he understands procedures and has developed soldier skills. What he lacks is experience dealing with real enemies, real danger and the unpredictability of an actual operation.
The Big Shell mission therefore functions as both an external infiltration and an internal test. The player is not controlling a legendary veteran arriving fully formed. You are seeing a recruit learn how field work differs from simulated training.
Why the game emphasizes stealth
MGS2 presents Raiden through the series’ stealth-and-infiltration framework. The mission is about entering a controlled facility, gathering information and surviving through careful movement rather than treating every encounter as an invitation to fight. The Master Collection description places the game in that stealth and infiltration tradition.
This emphasis affects how Raiden feels. His vulnerability is part of the design: observation, positioning and restraint matter more than overwhelming force. Even when the story gives him increasingly dangerous responsibilities, the game’s basic language remains infiltration.
What his early portrayal means
The young operative in MGS2 is not weak because he lacks training. He is inexperienced because simulation cannot reproduce every consequence of combat. That distinction explains why he can perform demanding tasks while still appearing uncertain. His competence and his lack of battlefield history coexist.

It also establishes the contrast that later games rely on. When Rising shows Raiden as a cyborg built for direct combat, the transformation carries narrative weight because the earlier game showed a soldier who had never fought in a real operation before.
Raiden in Metal Gear Rising: Revengeance: the cyborg operative
Spoiler warning: The following section includes major setup details from Metal Gear Rising: Revengeance and its official backstory, including the post-MGS4 timeline and Raiden’s cyborg status.
A later point in the timeline
Konami states that the events of Metal Gear Rising: Revengeance take place four years after Metal Gear Solid 4: Guns of the Patriots. The official material does not establish a calendar year, so the reliable way to place the game is relative to MGS4, not by assigning it an invented date.

Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsFix Now →Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitchesFind Drivers →That places Rising well after Raiden’s Big Shell introduction. By this point, the world has changed after the Patriots’ destruction, and former private military company structures have splintered into new factions. Raiden is no longer a rookie being evaluated on his first operation.
Former child soldier, now cyborg
Konami’s backstory identifies this Raiden as a former child soldier who has been transformed into a cyborg. The change is physical, psychological and professional. His body is now an engineered combat platform, and his work is connected to Maverick Securities rather than the FOXHOUND debut seen in MGS2.
That history does not erase the character from MGS2; it explains the severe difference in presentation. The later Raiden carries experience that the earlier version does not yet possess, and his cyborg body allows the game to express that change through high-speed action.
The mission premise
Konami describes Rising as an all-action experience that combines story and combat. Its setup begins after a plan involving an African president leaves Raiden wounded. From there, the game places him in a near-future conflict shaped by cybernetic augmentation and a changing PMC landscape.

Sunny, Raiden’s friend from MGS4, also returns. That connection helps place Rising within the broader series continuity rather than treating it as an isolated spin-off with an unrelated hero.

How the gameplay differs
MGS2: infiltration first
The central question in MGS2 is how to move through a dangerous facility without turning every encounter into a direct battle. The game’s stealth framework makes information, timing and positioning central to success. Raiden’s first mission reinforces that design because the character is learning how to operate in the field at the same time the player is learning the scenario.
The game can include confrontation, but confrontation is not the organizing principle. Its identity comes from infiltrating the Big Shell, managing exposure and progressing through a covert operation.
Rising: combat and exploration first
Rising is explicitly marketed as an action experience. Konami describes a mixture of exploration and combat, with Raiden’s High-Frequency Blade as the defining tool. The result is a fundamentally different rhythm: movement and encounters are designed around what Raiden can do in a fight, not primarily around avoiding detection.
Calling it an action game does not mean the story disappears. Konami describes the game as blending action and story, so the combat-focused format is the way the later Raiden’s role is expressed rather than a rejection of narrative.
The High-Frequency Blade as a character statement
In Rising, the High-Frequency Blade is more than a named weapon. It communicates that Raiden has moved from a cautious infiltrator to a purpose-built combatant. The weapon is the clearest mechanical symbol of the later game’s emphasis on direct action, while the stealth-oriented framing of MGS2 reflects the earlier stage of his development.
Neither description should be reduced to a single mechanic. MGS2 is not simply “a game where you never fight,” and Rising is not merely “a game with no story.” Their official descriptions point to different priorities: infiltration for the former, and action, exploration and combat for the latter.
Story continuity: what connects the two versions
The Big Shell mission comes first
Raiden’s Big Shell infiltration is his first actual mission, according to Konami’s character profile. This is the foundation for the character readers often remember as uncertain, inexperienced or dependent on instruction. It is the beginning of his playable journey, not the endpoint of his training.

The later games change his circumstances
By the time of Rising, Raiden’s circumstances are radically different. He has passed through the events leading to and following MGS4, become a cyborg and taken professional work with Maverick Securities. The game’s four-year placement after MGS4 gives the later version a clear position in the series chronology.

The official material does not provide a complete account of every event between the Big Shell and Rising. It does establish enough to answer the identity question: the later cyborg is the same Raiden, shown after years of experience and transformation.
Visual and tonal contrast
The two games use different presentations because they are telling different kinds of Raiden stories. MGS2 introduces a soldier whose theoretical preparation has not yet been tested in real combat. Its stealth setting supports tension, caution and uncertainty.
Rising presents a veteran operative whose body and work are inseparable from cybernetic warfare. Its action format supports speed, force and spectacle. The contrast is therefore both visual and thematic: the first game asks what happens when a trained newcomer enters the field, while the later game asks what the same person has become after surviving and changing.

Choose MGS2 first for Raiden’s origin
Start with Metal Gear Solid 2: Sons of Liberty if you want to see Raiden’s first actual mission and understand why his later cyborg identity represents such a dramatic progression. This order gives the character contrast its full effect.
Choose Rising first for immediate action
Start with Metal Gear Rising: Revengeance if your priority is an action-focused game built around combat, exploration and the High-Frequency Blade. You will meet a later version of Raiden, but the game is designed as its own playable action experience.
Play both for the complete comparison
Playing both in release or story-development order makes the difference easiest to understand: first the FOXHOUND recruit on the Big Shell, then the cyborg operative working for Maverick Securities after MGS4. The contrast is the point of the comparison.

Common points of confusion
“Raiden was already a cyborg in MGS2, right?”
No. The official MGS2 profile presents him as a FOXHOUND operative with VR training and no real-life combat experience. The cyborg identity belongs to the later stage represented by Rising.
“Is Rising a remake of MGS2?”
No. Rising is a later action game starring the same continuing character. It is not a remake of the Big Shell mission and does not present the same gameplay structure.
“Does Rising happen immediately after MGS2?”
No. Konami places Rising four years after MGS4. The official material does not give a calendar year, so the precise placement should be expressed relative to MGS4.
“Are the games the same genre?”
They share the broader Metal Gear universe but have different dominant play styles. MGS2 is framed around stealth and infiltration. Rising is framed around action, combat and exploration.
Bottom line
Raiden in MGS2 is a trained FOXHOUND newcomer facing his first real mission at the Big Shell. Raiden in Metal Gear Rising: Revengeance is that same character years later: a former child soldier, transformed into a cyborg and working as an experienced operative for Maverick Securities. The games differ because Raiden changes—and because one game is a stealth infiltration story while the other is an action combat experience.
