Start with the project constraint, not a benchmark score

The practical choice is determined by the interface, software image or deployment constraint that would be expensive to change later. A board with more theoretical compute is not automatically the better controller, NAS, desktop or classroom computer.

  • CanaKit Turbine Black Case for the Raspberry Pi 5
  • CanaKit Low Noise Bearing System Fan
  • Mega Heat Sink - Black Anodized
  • Need two multi-gigabit network links? The Q8B’s dual 2.5GbE design is the relevant advantage.
  • Need more than one directly attached NVMe drive? The Q8B exposes two M.2 M-key sockets, while Pi 5 reaches fast storage through its PCIe connector and an additional HAT or adapter.
  • Need a familiar 40-pin accessory, wireless networking and Raspberry Pi OS instructions? Pi 5 reduces integration uncertainty, provided the specific HAT supports this generation.
  • Need a memory-heavy service or several containers? Q8B’s listed ceiling is higher, but buyable capacity, image support and sustained thermals still matter.
  • Need local AI? Confirm that your model, operators and runtime can use the Q8B accelerator; a TOPS headline alone does not answer that question.

Use the following sections to translate those constraints into a purchase decision.

Compute, graphics and memory: what the specifications do and do not tell you

Different CPU and GPU ecosystems

The Q8B and Pi 5 are not variants of the same platform. Q8B uses Qualcomm’s Snapdragon 8cx Gen 3 (SC8280XP), with Kryo cores and an Adreno 690 GPU. Pi 5 uses Broadcom’s BCM2712, a quad-core Cortex-A76 design paired with VideoCore VII. Their instruction-level behavior, kernel configuration, graphics drivers, video pipelines and application packages differ.

That makes a simple “eight cores versus four” or “3.0GHz versus 2.4GHz” conclusion unsafe. The official pages cited here provide no workload-matched benchmark, so do not turn these figures into a percentage speed claim. If your application is CPU-bound, measure the exact software stack you intend to deploy, including storage and cooling.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Memory capacity and SKU planning

Q8B is listed with LPDDR4X memory up to 32GB and speeds up to 4266 MT/s. Pi 5 is listed in 1GB, 2GB, 4GB, 8GB and 16GB versions using LPDDR4X-4267. Capacity is fixed at purchase; neither platform offers a normal user-upgrade path.

For a small sensor gateway, 2GB or 4GB may be sufficient. A development workstation, browser-heavy desktop, database cache or several virtualized services may benefit from a larger configuration. Do not compare the Q8B maximum with the cheapest Pi 5: compare the exact memory tier, board revision and local stock you can buy.

AI acceleration requires software support

Radxa lists a Qualcomm AI Engine using Hexagon and quotes “up to 29+ TOPS.” That is a manufacturer specification for the Q8B, not an independently reproduced benchmark. TOPS also does not describe precision, model operators, memory transfers, compiler support or sustained thermal performance.

Before choosing Q8B for inference, verify the intended framework, delegate or runtime, supported operators and model-conversion process for the exact operating-system image. Pi 5’s product page identifies VideoCore VII but does not provide a comparable TOPS number. A project that already has a tested Raspberry Pi software path can therefore be lower risk than one that depends on an unverified accelerator integration.

Networking and storage: where the Q8B has its clearest hardware lead

Dual 2.5GbE versus Pi 5 Gigabit Ethernet

Q8B provides two 2.5GbE RJ45 interfaces. That combination is useful for a router, firewall, network appliance, storage node with separate networks or an edge computer that must move data between a fast LAN and another segment. Actual throughput still depends on switch capability, cabling, drivers, packet size, CPU load and thermal conditions.

Pi 5 includes Gigabit Ethernet and built-in dual-band 802.11ac Wi-Fi. It is the simpler choice when one wired link and wireless connectivity are enough. Q8B’s wireless option is an M.2 E-key 2230 slot for a Wi-Fi 6E/Bluetooth 5.3 module; the module is not the same as built-in radio hardware, so account for sourcing, antennas and driver support.

Two M.2 sockets versus an adapter path

Q8B’s storage list includes microSD, UFS 3.1 and two M.2 M-key 2280 sockets using PCIe 3.0 links described as x4 and x2. This layout is attractive for a compact NAS, local cache, database host or edge recorder that needs more than one directly attached SSD.

Pi 5 provides microSD and a PCIe 2.0 x1 interface. To attach a fast NVMe drive, Raspberry Pi’s product information specifies a separate M.2 HAT or adapter. That adds another board, mechanical clearance and a power budget, and the selected adapter must fit the case and operating system. It remains a supported expansion route, but it is not equivalent to two onboard M.2 sockets.

Neither specification page establishes sustained disk throughput, simultaneous-lane behavior, thermals or network-to-disk performance. For storage-heavy work, test the complete enclosure, SSD, filesystem and cooling combination rather than assuming the interface label is the delivered speed.

Displays, cameras, USB and GPIO

Display connector choices

Q8B combines an HDMI 2.1 Type-A connector with two USB-C ports supporting DisplayPort 1.4 Alt Mode; Radxa lists up to 4K120. Pi 5 offers two 4Kp60 HDMI outputs with HDR support. A workstation with two HDMI monitors may integrate more directly with Pi 5, while a monitor or dock built around DisplayPort over USB-C may favor Q8B.

Check the monitor’s input, cable requirements, desired refresh rate, HDR behavior and number of simultaneous screens. “Up to 4K120” and “dual 4Kp60” describe different connection scenarios; one is not a universal replacement for the other.

USB and camera/display expansion

Q8B lists two USB 3.2 Gen 2 Type-A ports and two USB 2.0 ports, along with a PCIe FPC x1 connection. Pi 5 has two USB 3.0 and two USB 2.0 ports plus two four-lane camera/display transceivers. Choose according to the peripherals and ribbon-cable accessories your build actually uses.

Both boards list a 40-pin GPIO header, but the physical presence of 40 pins does not establish identical electrical mappings or software compatibility. A Raspberry Pi HAT may rely on a particular pin assignment, EEPROM behavior, overlay or library. Confirm the Q8B pinout and driver support before wiring a Pi-designed accessory, and verify that a Pi 5 HAT explicitly supports Pi 5 rather than only older generations.

Power, cooling and mechanical fit

Use the correct input voltage

Q8B accepts 12–20V through an input header or 20V through USB-C. Pi 5 specifies 5V/5A USB-C. These are fundamentally different power arrangements; a Pi supply is not a Q8B supply, and a Q8B voltage source is not suitable for Pi 5.

Raspberry Pi states: “We recommend a high-quality 5V 5A USB-C power supply, such as the new Raspberry Pi 27W USB-C Power Supply.” That recommendation addresses the supply specification, not the board’s total system consumption. Add the board, storage, USB devices, display load and any fan or HAT when sizing the complete power system.

Cooling under sustained load

Q8B lists a fan connector. Pi 5’s manufacturer guidance says it “will perform best with active cooling,” particularly as a general-purpose computer under load. A passive heatsink may be adequate for a light controller but is not evidence of sustained performance for compilation, storage traffic, inference or desktop workloads.

No matched power-draw or thermal test is established for these boards. Plan airflow and heatsinking around the actual enclosure, ambient temperature and duty cycle. If a service throttles, crashes or drops storage/network performance, check temperature and supply stability before blaming the operating system.

  • Raspberry Pi 5 with 8GB RAM: Model SC1112 featuring a quad-core ARM Cortex-A76 processor running at 2.4GHz. Enhanced Connectivity: Includes dual 4K micro HDMI ports, USB-C power input, and high-speed USB 3.0 ports. PCIe Expansion Support: FPC connector enables M.2 NVMe SSDs when using compatible adapters. Fast Storage Options: Works with microSD cards for booting, or optional NVMe storage for advanced projects. Built for Projects & Learning: Ideal for programming, home labs, DIY electronics, automation, and Linux-based development.

Cases and physical compatibility

Q8B is listed at 100 × 75mm. Pi 5 has its own mechanical layout and accessory ecosystem. Raspberry Pi explicitly warns: “Raspberry Pi 5 won’t fit the Raspberry Pi 4 Case.” Reusing a Pi 4 case can obstruct connectors or mounting points even when the board looks similar. For either board, verify connector clearance, M.2 heatsink height, fan placement, cable bend radius and access to the GPIO header before ordering a case.

Operating systems, drivers and ecosystem risk

What Radxa lists

Radxa lists Radxa OS, Windows, Ubuntu, Armbian, Arch Linux, Nix OS and Debian for Q8B. That breadth is useful for developers who need a particular distribution or Windows support, but the cited specification does not grade release maturity, hardware acceleration, camera support, sleep behavior or AI framework completeness.

For a Q8B deployment, identify the exact image and kernel version first. Confirm that Ethernet, both M.2 links, the wireless module, display outputs, GPIO overlays and any accelerator runtime work in that image. A distribution name alone does not guarantee that every listed interface is production-ready.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

What Raspberry Pi documents

Raspberry Pi’s product page states that Pi 5 works with Raspberry Pi OS Trixie and Bookworm and that releases older than Bookworm do not work. This is narrower than Q8B’s list, but it gives a clear baseline for image selection. Raspberry Pi’s official documentation, examples and accessory instructions also target the Pi hardware family directly.

That ecosystem matters when a project depends on a camera library, HAT overlay, classroom guide, GPIO package or vendor support procedure. It does not make every accessory automatically compatible: check Pi 5 support, firmware requirements and mechanical fit for each part.

Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone.Support on Ko-Fi

Which board fits common projects?

Network appliance, router or firewall

Choose Q8B if the design requires two 2.5GbE interfaces, especially when one port faces a high-speed LAN and the other serves a separate network. The optional wireless module can add flexibility, but it introduces another component and compatibility check.

Choose Pi 5 when Gigabit Ethernet and built-in Wi-Fi are sufficient and the project already has a documented Raspberry Pi image or accessory workflow. Verify that the intended firewall software supports the Pi 5 kernel and networking hardware.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

NAS, storage server or edge recorder

Q8B is the more natural hardware fit for a design centered on multiple M.2 drives and fast wired networking. The two sockets and dual Ethernet ports reduce the need for add-on boards. You still need to validate SSD thermals, filesystem behavior, lane sharing and sustained transfers.

Pi 5 can serve storage workloads through its PCIe connector and an M.2 HAT or adapter. Select the adapter, SSD, enclosure and power supply as one system; do not assume that a bare board and drive provide a finished NAS.

Desktop, media or dual-display computer

Pi 5’s dual HDMI outputs, built-in wireless and established Raspberry Pi OS path make it a straightforward choice for a conventional small desktop or kiosk. Q8B may be preferable where USB-C DisplayPort Alt Mode, larger memory capacity or a specific Windows/Linux image is decisive.

Pi 5 Offers lightning-fast CPU speed, a PCI Express interface, a Real Time Clock (RTC) and a power button and runs significantly cooler than Pi 4.

For video playback, browser use and graphics-heavy applications, verify application acceleration and display-driver support in the exact image. The product specifications alone do not establish comparative frame rates.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

GPIO, robotics and education

Both boards expose 40-pin GPIO headers, but the software and electrical details determine whether a project transfers cleanly. Pi 5 is usually lower risk when the lesson, HAT, sensor library or tutorial explicitly targets Raspberry Pi. Q8B can be a strong choice when its network, memory or storage features are central, provided the sensor drivers and pin mapping are confirmed first.

Local AI and computer vision

Q8B deserves consideration because Radxa lists the Qualcomm AI Engine and up to 29+ TOPS. Treat that figure as a starting point for compatibility investigation, not a completed performance comparison. Check model conversion, supported operators, precision modes, runtime installation and camera pipeline integration.

Pi 5 may still be preferable when the project’s software is already optimized for its CPU/GPU path or when community documentation is more valuable than an unverified accelerator route. Neither cited product page supplies a matched inference result.

Linux learning and general development

For a general Linux learning board, both vendors position their hardware for development and expose common interfaces. Let the available images, your preferred distribution, the exact peripheral, board price and power setup decide. A familiar tutorial is useful only if its commands, pin numbers and package versions match the board you bought.

Cost, availability and total-system budgeting

A current, comparable regional price is not established for either board in the cited material. Raspberry Pi’s current product page directs buyers to local resellers, while the Q8B documentation page does not provide a current price. Stock, memory tier, taxes and regional distribution can change the apparent value quickly.

Raspberry Pi’s 2023 launch announcement quoted $60 for the 4GB model and $80 for the 8GB model, plus local taxes. Those are historical launch figures, not 2026 retail quotes. Do not use them as a present-day price comparison.

Build a like-for-like bill of materials:

  • Board with the required memory capacity.
  • Correct power supply and cable.
  • Active cooler, heatsink or fan and the enclosure needed to fit it.
  • microSD card, UFS device, SSD or M.2 adapter/HAT.
  • Wireless module and antenna if Q8B wireless networking is required.
  • Display, camera, GPIO or storage accessories that are actually compatible.
  • Shipping, regional tax and replacement time if a board or module is unavailable.

The lower board price can disappear when one platform needs a power adapter, cooling solution, storage bridge or wireless module that the other includes on-board.

A practical buying and validation checklist

  1. Write the non-negotiables. Record network speed and port count, number of drives, memory requirement, display connectors, camera or GPIO accessory, operating system and supply voltage.
  2. Select the exact SKU. For Q8B, confirm memory capacity and the board revision. For Pi 5, choose among the listed 1GB, 2GB, 4GB, 8GB or 16GB tiers.
  3. Validate software before ordering accessories. Identify the image, kernel, drivers, GPIO libraries, camera stack and AI runtime required by the application.
  4. Check every expansion part. Confirm M.2 key and length, PCIe adapter support, SSD thermals, wireless-module compatibility, antenna clearance and HAT pin usage.
  5. Design power and cooling together. Use Q8B’s 12–20V/20V input arrangement or Pi 5’s 5V/5A USB-C requirement; then add the consumption of storage, USB devices, displays and fans.
  6. Confirm the enclosure mechanically. Measure board footprint, connector access, cable routing, M.2 heatsink height and fan position. Do not reuse a Pi 4 case for Pi 5.
  7. Test the real workload. Measure boot time, application response, sustained storage transfers, network throughput, temperature, throttling and recovery after power interruption.
  8. Plan replacement and support. Pi 5 has a published production statement through at least January 2036. No equivalent Q8B lifecycle commitment appears on the cited product page, so obtain the vendor’s current availability information for a long-lived design.

Final decision

Buy the Radxa Dragon Q8B when its specific hardware advantages are requirements rather than nice-to-haves: dual 2.5GbE, two PCIe 3.0 M.2 sockets, up to 32GB of memory, USB-C DisplayPort output, or a validated Qualcomm AI software path. Confirm the image, drivers, modules, cooling and power supply before committing.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Buy Raspberry Pi 5 when the project benefits more from built-in Wi-Fi and Bluetooth, a documented Raspberry Pi OS baseline, a broad Pi-focused accessory and tutorial ecosystem, dual HDMI, or a published production horizon. Budget for the correct 5V/5A supply, active cooling where appropriate, and any M.2 HAT or adapter.

If neither board’s defining advantage is necessary, compare the exact memory SKU, local price, accessory bundle and software support for your workload. The available specifications do not establish a universal performance or value winner.
