Nappa is stronger than Raditz in the original Dragon Ball Z Saiyan arc. The clearest evidence is the story itself: Piccolo had already overcome Raditz, yet reacts with shock to Nappa’s overwhelming power. Nappa then survives the defenders’ counterattack and defeats Earth’s fighters before Goku arrives.
Commonly cited guidebook-associated figures point in the same direction—1,500 for Raditz and 4,000 for Nappa—but those numbers come through a secondary fan compilation rather than a guidebook page independently verified here. The narrative comparison is therefore firmer than any exact numerical multiplier.

The direct verdict
In the Saiyan arc, Nappa has the higher combat power, the more dominant on-page performance and the stronger narrative presentation. Raditz is dangerous because he is the first Saiyan to reach Earth, catches Goku and Piccolo unprepared, and exposes Goku’s identity. Nappa arrives later against defenders who have spent a year preparing for the Saiyans, yet he still overwhelms them.
There is no canonical Raditz-versus-Nappa fight to settle the question directly. The answer comes from comparing what each Saiyan accomplishes against the opposition available at the time. On that evidence, Nappa is the superior fighter.

That conclusion applies to the versions shown in the original Saiyan storyline. It is not a claim about every video-game statistic, crossover ranking or later alternate interpretation. Keeping the comparison inside that arc prevents later power inflation from obscuring what the story establishes early.
What “stronger” means in this comparison
Dragon Ball discussions use “strength” in several overlapping ways:
- Stated battle power: a numerical reading associated with guidebooks or the story’s early power-level system.
- Combat performance: how a character actually fares against opponents in battle.
- Narrative portrayal: how the official story frames the character’s threat relative to someone already seen.
- Battlefield reliability: whether a fighter can keep control of a confrontation after the opponents understand the danger and coordinate against him.
All four measures favor Nappa for the original Saiyan arc. The numerical evidence is less secure because the surviving figure attribution available for this comparison is secondary, while the official recap directly contrasts Piccolo’s earlier victory over Raditz with his alarm at Nappa’s power. That distinction matters: a number can summarize a ranking, but the sequence of events shows how the ranking functions in practice.

Raditz’s role in the story
The first Saiyan threat on Earth
Raditz is the first Saiyan encountered after the story establishes that Goku is not biologically human. The official character profile describes his arrival, his revelation of Goku’s Saiyan identity and the information he sends to Vegeta and Nappa before his death. That makes Raditz essential to the plot even though his appearance is brief. Read the official profile in Weekly ☆ Character Showcase #21: Raditz!.
Raditz’s advantage is surprise. Goku has no preparation for a brother from another world, does not understand the Saiyan threat and is forced into an emergency alliance with Piccolo. Raditz is able to exploit that confusion, abduct Gohan and force the two former rivals to cooperate against him. His opening position is therefore strategically excellent even before comparing raw power.
He also has information that the defenders lack. Raditz knows Goku’s origin, understands the significance of the Dragon Balls and can explain that other Saiyans are coming. The official profile’s emphasis on the information transmitted to Vegeta and Nappa shows that his role is partly reconnaissance. He is not merely testing his strength; he is establishing the next invasion.
How Raditz is defeated
Raditz is ultimately overcome by the combined effort of Goku and Piccolo rather than by either fighter acting alone. Piccolo’s technique and Goku’s willingness to hold Raditz in place make the victory possible, but the battle also establishes a ceiling for Raditz: once his opponents understand the threat and coordinate, he can be defeated.
This point matters when comparing him with Nappa. The official Saiyan-arc recap describes Piccolo as having overcome Raditz, then presents Piccolo as stunned by Nappa’s power. That is an explicit in-story comparison, not a fan estimate. Piccolo is not encountering Nappa as a completely unknown quantity; he has already experienced a Saiyan battle and still regards Nappa as a dramatic escalation.
Raditz’s defeat does not make him weak in an absolute sense. He remains far beyond the ordinary humans who had no way to respond to him, and his arrival forces Goku and Piccolo to abandon their rivalry. The relevant point is relative: his threat can be solved by a desperate two-person tactic, whereas Nappa’s later attack breaks a larger, prepared defense.
Nappa’s arrival and battlefield performance
He faces prepared defenders
Nappa does not arrive against an unsuspecting Earth. The defenders have a year to train after Raditz’s death and warning. When the Saiyans finally reach Earth, Nappa’s opening assault includes the Saibamen, forcing the defenders into a sustained fight before Nappa takes the field personally.

The official account places this material in “Volume 18: The Saiyan Invasion” and “Volume 19: Earth vs. the Saiyans.” Those installments provide the primary story path for checking the sequence rather than relying on isolated power-level lists. See The Story of Dragon Ball in 42 Panels – Part Two.

Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errorsFree Scan →Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minuteDriver Scan →The year of preparation changes the comparison. Earth’s fighters know that Saiyans are coming, know that the first encounter was costly and have time to train together. Nappa therefore gets less benefit from the kind of total surprise Raditz enjoyed. His results are stronger despite the defenders’ warning and preparation.
The Saibamen as part of the escalation
The Saibamen are not a replacement for Nappa’s own strength, but they shape the battlefield before he fights directly. Their appearance makes the defenders expend energy and attention during the invasion’s opening stage. By the time Nappa acts, the conflict has already become a test of endurance and coordination.
This sequence also distinguishes the two Saiyans’ narrative functions. Raditz is a single unexpected intruder whose personal encounter introduces the larger threat. Nappa is the commander-like presence at the center of an organized assault. The official chronology treats the Saibamen and Nappa’s personal fight as parts of one invasion, making his dominance over the defenders more comprehensive than Raditz’s isolated confrontation.
Why his performance is more overwhelming
Nappa’s opponents have knowledge, preparation and multiple fighters on their side. Even so, the official recap portrays him as an indomitable threat who defeats Earth’s defenders until Goku arrives. Piccolo’s reaction captures the intended escalation: “I never thought…it would be so much…!” The line appears in the official site’s account of the manga scene and is attributed to Piccolo reacting to Nappa.

The contrast is important. Raditz’s battle is a crisis that ends when Goku and Piccolo discover a workable strategy. Nappa’s battle is an extended collapse of the prepared defense. The story therefore uses Nappa to show that the danger has risen substantially beyond Raditz.
Nappa’s endurance is especially relevant to the word “stronger.” A fighter who can maintain control against several trained opponents demonstrates more than a high initial reading. He can apply that advantage repeatedly, resist attempts to change the momentum and continue the assault until a substantially stronger arrival changes the situation.
Power-level figures: 1,500 versus 4,000
A commonly circulated set of guidebook-associated figures lists Raditz at 1,500 and Nappa at 4,000. Both values are listed by the fan compilation DBZ Warriors’ Dragonball Power Levels, which attributes them to Daizenshuu or related guidebook material. The compilation’s publication year is not stated, and the original guidebook page was not independently inspected here.
| Character | Commonly listed figure | What the source supports | Qualification |
|---|---|---|---|
| Raditz | 1,500 | Value listed in the DBZ Warriors compilation | Secondary compilation; guidebook attribution not independently verified here |
| Nappa | 4,000 | Value listed in the DBZ Warriors compilation | Secondary compilation; guidebook attribution not independently verified here |
If the two listed values are placed side by side, Nappa’s figure is about 2.67 times Raditz’s. The calculation is 4,000 divided by 1,500, or 2.666…, which rounds to 2.67. That arithmetic describes the gap between the reported numbers; it is not an official statement that Nappa is exactly 2.67 times as strong, nor does it prove how either character would perform in every possible situation.

The official Dragon Ball recap does not present these two numbers as a direct quotation or announce a multiplier. It supplies the stronger form of evidence for the article’s verdict: the characters’ relative performance in the story. Readers can use the figures as a convenient shorthand, but should not mistake a secondary list for a directly checked page from a particular guidebook edition.

Why the qualification matters
Guidebook-associated values often circulate without the edition, page number or translation history attached. A careful comparison should therefore separate three statements: the compilation lists 1,500 and 4,000; the compilation attributes them to guidebook material; and the original publication has not been checked here. Only the first statement is directly established by the cited web list. That wording preserves the useful comparison without overstating the provenance.
Raditz and Nappa compared directly
| Comparison point | Raditz | Nappa |
|---|---|---|
| Story position | First Saiyan encountered on Earth | Later Saiyan invader who follows the year of preparation |
| Information advantage | Arrives unexpectedly and reveals Goku’s origin | Arrives with knowledge supplied by Raditz and confronts an alerted defense |
| Opposition | Goku and Piccolo, who must improvise an alliance | Earth’s assembled defenders, after training and preparation |
| Reported power figure | 1,500, commonly listed by a secondary compilation | 4,000, commonly listed by a secondary compilation |
| Official narrative impression | Dangerous but ultimately overcome by a coordinated tactic | Described as an indomitable power that shocks Piccolo and defeats the defenders before Goku’s arrival |
| Direct fight between the two? | No canonical on-page Raditz-versus-Nappa match is established in the cited story material | |
The table also explains why simple opponent counts can mislead. Raditz fights two major opponents, but they are improvising and need a very specific combination of abilities. Nappa fights a broader defensive group after its members have had time to prepare. The quality and circumstances of resistance matter as much as the number of people present.
Could Raditz beat Nappa?
In a straightforward fight using their Saiyan-arc versions, Raditz would be the underdog. The commonly listed figures give Nappa a substantial numerical advantage, and the official story gives Nappa the more impressive results against prepared opponents.

- Surprise: Raditz’s first encounter shows that an opponent who does not understand Saiyan abilities can be caught off guard.
- Information and tactics: Raditz is not simply a mindless brawler. He gathers information, identifies Goku’s relationship to him and uses Gohan as leverage.
- Different battle conditions: An ambush, unusual terrain or a specific objective could produce a different result from an arena-style contest.
- Mission priorities: Raditz might seek information, capture or intimidation rather than a prolonged exchange of blows. Winning an objective is not the same as overpowering Nappa.
Those are situational advantages, not evidence that Raditz has comparable raw power. They explain how Raditz can be dangerous without overturning the overall ranking. In a direct contest where both know the opponent and the goal is simply to defeat the other, the conditions that most helped Raditz disappear.
Why Nappa remains the likely winner
- Nappa’s reported figure is higher by a wide margin.
- He withstands the combined resistance of defenders who have had time to prepare.
- Piccolo, who had already helped defeat Raditz, explicitly reacts to Nappa as something far more overwhelming.
- The story keeps Nappa active through the defenders’ battle and only changes the situation when Goku arrives.
- His invasion setting gives him repeated opportunities to demonstrate control rather than relying on a single surprise exchange.
A hypothetical victory for Raditz would therefore need a special condition—an ambush, a mission unrelated to defeating Nappa or a version of the characters outside the original Saiyan arc. It would not be the expected result of an equal, direct confrontation.
Why the story escalates from Raditz to Nappa
Raditz functions as the warning. His visit changes the meaning of Goku’s identity, introduces the Saiyans and gives Vegeta and Nappa a reason to come to Earth. The heroes survive that first encounter, but the victory carries a cost: Goku dies, Piccolo learns that a larger invasion is coming and the defenders must train under a deadline.
Nappa represents the payoff to that warning. The defenders are no longer ignorant, yet knowledge alone is insufficient. His Saibamen attack opens the invasion, and his personal assault demonstrates that the next stage of the conflict cannot be solved by the same combination that defeated Raditz.
This is a classic escalation structure within the arc. The first Saiyan proves that Goku’s old understanding of himself is incomplete. The second major Saiyan proves that surviving the first encounter does not mean Earth is ready for the invasion. Nappa’s job in the story is to make the heroes’ year of preparation feel inadequate until Goku’s arrival changes the balance again.
Gohan’s role reinforces the danger. The official character material for the Saiyan arc follows his latent power and later defeat by Nappa, showing that exceptional bursts of potential do not automatically overcome Nappa’s established advantage. See Weekly ☆ Character Showcase #20: The Saiyan Arc’s Son Gohan!. Gohan can display unusual potential while still being unable to reverse the broader battle against Nappa.
Piccolo’s reaction as comparative evidence
Piccolo is the most useful measuring point because he participates in both stages of the story. He helps overcome Raditz, learns what a Saiyan battle demands and then faces Nappa with the memory of that earlier encounter. When Piccolo reacts, “I never thought…it would be so much…!”, the line communicates a perceived difference from someone who has firsthand experience.

That reaction should not be converted into an exact multiplier. It does not say that Nappa is a particular number of times stronger, and it is not a laboratory measurement. Its value is comparative and dramatic: a fighter who knows Raditz’s level recognizes Nappa as far more formidable.
Because the quote belongs to Piccolo in a fictional scene, it is evidence of the character’s assessment within the story, not a statement from a real-world commentator. The official Dragon Ball site reproduces the scene in its chronology, making the wording useful for explaining the intended escalation while keeping its fictional status clear.
What not to infer from the numbers
They are not a complete battle simulator
Early Dragon Ball power levels are useful shorthand, but a number does not account for every technique, transformation, injury, tactic or emotional change. Raditz’s battle demonstrates that coordination and a specialized technique can matter. A listed figure should therefore be treated as an indicator of relative combat power, not a guarantee of every exchange.
The same caution applies to the 2.67 ratio. It is a mathematical comparison of two reported entries, not a promise that every punch, beam or defensive move would show that exact difference. It also cannot answer questions the story does not ask, such as how either Saiyan would perform in a different environment or under a different objective.
Do not present the secondary list as a primary quotation
The 1,500 and 4,000 entries should be described as commonly listed guidebook-associated figures reported by a secondary compilation. They should not be introduced as numbers directly printed by the official Dragon Ball website, and they should not be attributed to DBZ Warriors as original measurements. Readers seeking edition-level verification should consult the relevant Daizenshuu or guidebook publication directly.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:

This answer is limited to Raditz and Nappa as they appear in the original Saiyan arc. It does not include video-game balancing, promotional rankings, alternate timelines, fan scaling, later transformations or hypothetical versions created for crossover debates.
That limitation matters because later Dragon Ball material repeatedly changes the scale of power. Comparing a later appearance or game statistic with the early Saiyan-arc characters would answer a different question. For the manga storyline covered by the official volumes, Nappa is the stronger Saiyan.
Common reader questions
Is Raditz stronger because he defeated Goku and Piccolo at first?
No. Raditz’s early advantage comes from surprise, information and the defenders’ lack of preparation. He is defeated when Goku and Piccolo coordinate. Nappa, by contrast, faces defenders who know an invasion is coming and still overwhelms them.
Does Nappa’s 4,000 figure appear on the official Dragon Ball site?
The official story recap establishes Nappa’s overwhelming performance but does not provide the 4,000 number as a direct quotation. The 4,000 entry is commonly listed by the DBZ Warriors compilation as guidebook-associated material, so it should be labeled as a secondary-source report.

Did Raditz and Nappa ever fight on-panel?
No canonical on-page match between them is established in the cited Saiyan-arc material. The ranking comes from their separate encounters, the official chronology and the commonly listed figures.
Could Raditz win with an ambush?
An ambush or mission with a different objective could change the outcome of a particular scene. That would be a situational victory, not evidence that Raditz has greater raw combat power. In a direct, known-opponent fight, Nappa remains the likely winner.
Why is Piccolo’s opinion important?
Piccolo is involved in overcoming Raditz and later experiences Nappa’s attack. His shock at Nappa’s power therefore connects the two encounters through one experienced observer. It is narrative evidence of escalation rather than an exact numerical measurement.

Final assessment
Nappa wins the comparison because every useful measure available for the Saiyan arc points the same way. The commonly listed figures put him at 4,000 against Raditz’s 1,500, while the official narrative shows him overwhelming a prepared group that includes Piccolo, a fighter involved in Raditz’s defeat. Raditz remains a crucial and dangerous antagonist, but Nappa is the stronger Saiyan in Dragon Ball Z’s original Saiyan arc.
Frequently Asked Questions
Who is stronger, Raditz or Nappa?
Nappa is stronger in the original Saiyan arc. The official story presents him overwhelming prepared Earth defenders, while Piccolo—who helped overcome Raditz—reacts with shock to Nappa’s power.
What are their commonly listed power levels?
A secondary DBZ Warriors compilation lists Raditz at 1,500 and Nappa at 4,000, attributing the entries to guidebook-associated material. The original guidebook page and edition were not independently verified here.
Could Raditz beat Nappa?
Raditz could have a chance only under a special condition such as an ambush or a different mission objective. In a direct, informed fight between their Saiyan-arc versions, Nappa is the clear favorite.
Is Nappa exactly 2.67 times stronger?
The reported figures have a ratio of about 2.67, but that arithmetic is not an official multiplier. It compares two listed values rather than guaranteeing the result of every technique or exchange.
Did Raditz and Nappa ever fight directly?
No canonical on-page Raditz-versus-Nappa fight is established in the cited story material. Their ranking is comparative, based on separate battles and the arc’s narrative escalation.
Why does Piccolo’s reaction matter?
Piccolo has firsthand experience helping defeat Raditz and then encounters Nappa. His statement, “I never thought…it would be so much…!”, is the story’s clearest direct signal that Nappa represents a higher level of threat.
The Bottom Line
Bottom line: Nappa is stronger than Raditz in Dragon Ball Z’s original Saiyan arc. The commonly listed figures are 4,000 for Nappa and 1,500 for Raditz, but the decisive evidence is the official story: Nappa overwhelms a prepared defense and shocks Piccolo, who had already helped defeat Raditz.
