Radio frequency (RF) is electromagnetic energy or an electrical signal that varies at frequencies used for communication, sensing, heating, and other purposes. RF is not one device or one exact frequency range: engineers and regulators use different boundaries, commonly from a few kilohertz to hundreds of gigahertz. RF can travel through free space, cables, circuit-board traces, connectors, and waveguides.

What does RF mean?

RF stands for radio frequency. The term can describe a frequency range, a conducted electrical signal, radiated electromagnetic energy, RF engineering as a discipline, or equipment such as an RF amplifier, cable, connector, front end, or test instrument.

There is no universally binding lower and upper limit. NIST defines RF radiation as 0.3 MHz to 300,000 MHz (300 kHz to 300 GHz) in its safety documentation (NIST). IEEE C95.7 addresses fields from 3 kHz to 300 GHz (IEEE), while FCC Part 18 defines RF energy from 9 kHz to 3 THz for that regulatory context (FCC Part 18 text). Always identify the standard or rule behind a stated range.

Frequency, wavelength, and the electromagnetic spectrum

Frequency is the number of cycles per second, measured in hertz (Hz). In free space, wavelength is calculated as λ = c/f, where c is approximately 3 × 108 metres per second and f is frequency in hertz.

100 MHz 3 m
1 GHz 30 cm
2.4 GHz 12.5 cm
5 GHz 6 cm
28 GHz 1.07 cm
60 GHz 5 mm

These are free-space calculations. A cable or circuit structure has a lower signal velocity and therefore a shorter effective wavelength because of its dielectric material. The borders between radio, microwave, infrared and other spectrum regions also vary. OSHA, for example, describes microwaves as a subset of radio waves and gives an approximate 300 MHz–3 GHz range in explanatory material (OSHA), while other classifications use broader microwave bands.

Conducted and radiated RF

Conducted RF

Conducted RF moves through coaxial cable, microstrip, stripline, connectors, filters, matching networks, PCB traces, antenna feeds and waveguides. A circuit can therefore be an RF circuit even when no energy is intentionally radiated.

Radiated RF

Radiated RF propagates through space from an antenna, enclosure leak, radar, broadcast transmitter or industrial system. A smartphone contains both forms: signals move through its internal traces and matching networks before an antenna converts them into a radiated field.

RF is not synonymous with wireless. Wireless links can use infrared, visible light or ultrasound, while RF can remain entirely inside a wired instrument.

How an RF communication system works

A simplified link is:

  1. Information is represented and source-coded.
  2. A modulator changes a carrier’s amplitude, frequency or phase to encode that information.
  3. An oscillator or synthesizer creates the carrier, often using a phase-locked loop.
  4. Filtering removes unwanted products and a power amplifier raises transmit power.
  5. The antenna converts conducted energy to a radiated field.
  6. The propagation channel introduces distance loss, reflections, noise and interference.
  7. The receiving antenna, filter and low-noise amplifier capture and strengthen the desired signal.
  8. A mixer or direct-conversion stage translates it to another frequency or baseband.
  9. A demodulator and decoder recover the information.

Architectures differ: superheterodyne, low-IF, direct-conversion and software-defined radios all use different combinations of analogue and digital processing. A duplexer or diplexer can let transmit and receive paths share an antenna or separate frequency paths.

  • Spread spectrum: distributes energy over wider bandwidth for coexistence or interference resistance.
  • Pulse modulation: encodes information in pulse timing, width, position or amplitude.

Carrier frequency is the signal’s centre frequency. Bandwidth is the occupied frequency span. Data rate is information per second. They are related, but none is interchangeable with another.

Common RF band names

These conventional engineering labels are useful shorthand, not legal allocations:

Band Approximate range Examples
VLF 3–30 kHz Navigation and specialised communications
LF 30–300 kHz Navigation, time signals and long-wave services
MF 300 kHz–3 MHz AM broadcasting
HF 3–30 MHz Shortwave and amateur radio
VHF 30–300 MHz FM broadcasting and aviation

Heating and industry

Microwave ovens, RF dielectric heating, semiconductor and plasma processing, medical diathermy and other industrial, scientific and medical equipment use RF energy locally. FCC Part 18 includes effects such as heating, ionisation, mechanical vibration, hair removal and acceleration of charged particles (47 CFR 18.107).

Medicine

MRI uses RF excitation pulses alongside strong magnetic fields; RF ablation heats tissue in controlled procedures; and diathermy applies electromagnetic energy for therapeutic heating. These are not simply wireless-communication applications.

Why RF design needs specialised engineering

As frequency rises, a wire’s physical size becomes significant relative to wavelength. Transmission-line effects replace the ideal-wire approximation.

  • Impedance discontinuities cause reflections and standing waves.
  • Return loss, insertion loss and S-parameters quantify network behaviour.
  • Parasitic capacitance and inductance alter resonance and matching.
  • Skin effect and dielectric loss increase attenuation.
  • Crosstalk, electromagnetic interference and enclosure leakage couple unwanted energy.
  • Grounding and return-current paths affect both signal integrity and emissions.
  • Nearby materials can detune an antenna.
  • Connector and cable transitions can dominate a measurement.
  • Power amplifiers and loads require thermal management.

There is no universal length at which a conductor becomes an RF transmission line. The practical threshold depends on wavelength, edge rise time, geometry, impedance and required accuracy.

Key RF components

  • Antennas: convert between conducted and radiated energy.
  • Low-noise and power amplifiers: amplify weak received signals or raise transmit power.
  • Mixers, oscillators and synthesizers: translate and generate frequencies.
  • Filters, resonators, duplexers and diplexers: select or separate frequency paths.
  • Attenuators, couplers, circulators and isolators: control, sample or direct power.
  • Switches, baluns, transformers and matching networks: route or transform signals and impedances.
  • Detectors: convert RF characteristics into measurable voltages or data.
  • Cables, connectors and waveguides: carry energy with controlled impedance and loss.
  • RF modules and software-defined radios: integrate analogue front ends with digital processing.

Passive parts do not provide power gain, although they can dissipate, filter or redirect energy. Active parts require power and can amplify, generate, mix, switch or detect RF. The RF front end is the portion closest to the antenna.

Choosing an RF measurement instrument

Instrument Question it answers
Spectrum analyzer What energy and interference exist versus frequency?
Signal analyzer What are the modulation, transient, phase-noise or signal-quality details?
Signal generator Can I create a known RF stimulus?
Vector signal generator Can I generate complex I/Q or digitally modulated waveforms?
Vector network analyzer (VNA) What are a device’s reflection and transmission characteristics?
Power meter How much RF power is present at a defined point and bandwidth?
Oscilloscope What happens in time, if bandwidth, probes and sampling are adequate?
SDR Can software-controlled hardware receive, process and sometimes transmit RF?
Antenna analyzer Is an antenna and feed system matched over frequency?
Frequency counter What is the frequency of an accessible, sufficiently clean signal?

NI lists these categories across prototyping, validation and production systems (NI RF and wireless hardware). A VNA measures network behaviour using a stimulus and receiver architecture; it is not a general spectrum monitor. Rohde & Schwarz explains that VNAs enable passive and active component characterisation not generally possible with a spectrum or signal analyser alone (R&S network analysers).

Measurement precautions

  • Never connect an unknown high-power transmitter directly to a spectrum analyser or VNA.
  • Use rated attenuators, limiters, couplers and fixtures; check maximum input power, DC tolerance and connector type.
  • Include cable and adapter loss, and calibrate a VNA at the measurement plane.
  • Remember that a low-cost SDR can display a spectrum without providing calibrated accuracy, dynamic range or input protection.

RF interference and troubleshooting

Noise is unwanted random or broad-spectrum energy. Interference disrupts a receiver. Crosstalk is unwanted coupling; jamming is intentional interference. Harmonics are integer multiples of a fundamental, while nonlinear devices can create intermodulation products. Blocking or desensitisation occurs when a strong unwanted signal reduces receiver performance.

  1. Determine whether the fault is transmit-side, receive-side, propagation-related or protocol-related.
  2. Check power supplies, cables, connectors and antenna connections.
  3. Inspect the spectrum for the wanted signal, harmonics and intermittent interferers.
  4. Substitute a known-good cable and antenna.
  5. Where permitted, reduce bandwidth or change channel.
  6. Increase distance from likely noise sources and check antenna orientation and polarisation.
  7. Add a filter only after identifying the unwanted frequency range, and verify its insertion loss.
  8. Confirm legal limits before changing transmit power or antenna gain.

Is RF dangerous?

Risk depends on frequency, power, distance, duration, duty cycle, antenna pattern, body location, near- or far-field conditions, and whether exposure is occupational or public. A Bluetooth device, smartphone, Wi-Fi access point, industrial heater and broadcast transmitter are all RF sources with very different conditions.

Exposure rules use quantities such as specific absorption rate (SAR, watts per kilogram), power density, electric-field strength, magnetic-field strength and maximum permissible exposure (MPE). OSHA explains these concepts and compliance distance in its exposure guidance (OSHA exposure evaluation). RF is non-ionising electromagnetic energy, but sufficiently intense fields can heat tissue, induce currents, cause burns or create arcing hazards.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

OSHA states that, at the time of its standards page, it had no federally mandated general RF exposure standard; FCC requirements apply to regulated transmitters and equipment (OSHA standards). NIST’s workplace programme focuses on controlled exposure around equipment capable of occupationally significant RF or microwave fields (NIST safety programme).

Near field and far field

In an antenna’s near field, electric and magnetic fields may not have the simple plane-wave relationship used in many far-field calculations. In the far field, power-density and field predictions are generally more straightforward. The boundary depends on wavelength and antenna dimensions, so there is no single safe distance that applies to every source.

RF regulation

U.S. rules distinguish spectrum allocation, service licensing, technical emission limits, equipment authorisation, antenna and installation requirements, and RF-exposure evaluation. Part 15 devices and Part 18 industrial, scientific and medical equipment have different requirements. Aviation, maritime, public-safety, satellite, cellular and amateur-radio services add service-specific rules. FCC material defines RF sources to include equipment that intentionally or unintentionally generates fields through antennas, apertures, coils or plates (FCC regulations).

Frequency tables alone cannot establish lawful operation. Country, service, frequency, power, bandwidth, emission type, antenna, installation and device class all matter.
