The practical answer: ask your lender to compare Radian, MGIC and Essent on the same loan scenario, then judge more than the premium. The useful comparison is the lender’s current quote, underwriting fit, policy and servicing terms, claims and loss-mitigation process, financial strength, applicable GSE eligibility and the lender’s experience executing that insurer’s policies.
Private mortgage insurance (PMI) is lender-facing protection against certain losses after mortgage default. It is commonly used when a borrower puts down less than 20% or a refinance leaves less than 20% equity, although the loan program and transaction rules control. A borrower normally does not select an insurer as an independent retail purchase; the lender’s approved workflow determines which insurers can be used for that loan.

Start with a defined loan, not a brand ranking
Radian, MGIC and Essent compete in overlapping private mortgage-insurance markets. None of the available company or industry material establishes one as the cheapest or best choice for every borrower, property, lender or transaction. Premiums and eligibility can change with the borrower’s risk attributes, coverage selection, lender relationship and the date of the quote.
That makes a generic rate chart a weak decision tool. Have the lender run the same case through each insurer that is available for the transaction. Keep the assumptions identical, record the quote date and ask which result is a firm underwriting decision, which is an estimate and which conditions remain outstanding.

What PMI does and who controls the choice
PMI protects the lender
PMI is credit protection attached to certain residential mortgages. If a covered loan defaults and produces an eligible loss, the policy can reimburse the insured lender for part of that loss, subject to the policy and claim requirements. It does not insure the borrower’s home, replace homeowners insurance or erase the borrower’s obligation to repay the mortgage.
Radian says PMI generally applies when a homebuyer puts down less than 20% or when a refinance has less than 20% equity. Those are broad indicators, not a promise that every loan below that threshold requires the same coverage. The loan type, investor rules, occupancy, property and lender process determine the actual requirement.
The lender usually selects the usable insurer set
The lender submits the loan to an insurer whose products, approvals and technology are integrated into its process. A borrower can ask which insurers were considered and can request comparable quotes, but usually cannot order a policy independently and require the lender to accept it. The relevant question is therefore: which approved insurer offers the best execution for this defined loan?
Comparison framework
| Axis | What to compare | Questions for the lender |
|---|---|---|
| Price | Premium for identical loan attributes, coverage, term and payment structure. | What is the current premium, how is it paid, and which assumptions produced it? |
| Underwriting fit | Eligibility for the borrower, property, occupancy, loan-to-value ratio and transaction. | Is the result an approval, an automated recommendation or a conditional review? What conditions remain? |
| Policy and administration | Coverage terms, policy issuance, amendments, servicing workflow, training and system connectivity. | Who handles notices, reporting, corrections and escalations after closing? |
| Claims and loss mitigation | Claim-submission requirements, communication, payment timing and loss-mitigation practices. | What is the documented escalation path if a claim or workout becomes complicated? |
| Financial strength and GSE eligibility | Current ratings for the relevant operating insurer, capital position and applicable GSE requirements. | Which legal entity is the counterparty, what is its rating date and is it currently eligible for the required channel? |
| Customer and technology experience | Lender support, field service, underwriting tools, delivery systems and relationship management. | How does this lender measure response times, rework and post-close service for each carrier? |
The dimensions above mirror factors the companies themselves identify as competitive: price, underwriting, service, customer relationships, financial strength, policy terms, claims or loss mitigation, product features and technology. A company’s description of its process is not independent proof that its outcomes are superior, so ask the lender for operational evidence rather than relying on marketing language.
Step-by-step method for comparing Radian, MGIC and Essent
- Freeze the scenario. Write down the loan purpose, property type, occupancy, purchase price or value, loan amount, loan-to-value ratio, credit and income characteristics, transaction date and loan program. Changing any of these can change eligibility or price.
- Request same-day or near-date quotes. Ask the lender to quote the same coverage level and payment structure with each available insurer. Capture the quote date, premium amount, upfront or monthly treatment, term assumptions and any rate-plan identifier.
- Separate pricing from approval. A low indicative premium is not useful if the insurer’s underwriting result is unavailable or conditional. Request the actual decision status and a list of documentation or eligibility conditions.
- Check policy mechanics. Confirm who is insured, the coverage percentage, effective date, servicing responsibilities, reporting requirements and the process for correcting borrower or loan data. Ask whether the quoted payment structure can change when the loan moves from application to issuance.
- Map post-close service. Identify the lender’s contact path for policy changes, billing questions, delinquency reporting, workout requests and claim escalation. The insurer that is easiest for the lender to administer may reduce execution risk even when premiums are close.
- Review claims and loss mitigation. Ask how the lender submits a claim, what records are required, how status is tracked and who resolves disputes. Treat stated commitments as process descriptions, not as a guarantee of a particular claim outcome.
- Verify financial and GSE facts as of the decision date. Record the rating agency, rating date, rated legal entity, current capital information and the applicable GSE eligibility status. These facts can change, so do not rely on an old presentation or a search result without a date.
- Document the choice. Keep the quote, underwriting findings, policy terms, service contacts and verification date in the loan file. If the loan changes materially before closing, rerun the comparison instead of assuming the original result still applies.
Why a public “cheapest insurer” answer is unreliable
Mortgage-insurance pricing is risk-sensitive. Credit profile, loan-to-value ratio, debt characteristics, property and occupancy can all affect the premium or eligibility. MGIC describes risk-based pricing systems and customized rate plans, and says those arrangements have become more common. A headline rate that omits the risk tier, coverage, payment method and lender arrangement cannot be translated into a universal ranking.

Even two lenders quoting the same insurer may produce different results if their delegated authority, data validation, pricing plan or workflow differs. A quote also has a shelf life. Market conditions, insurer guidance, GSE requirements and the loan file itself can change between application and closing.
How to evaluate each comparison dimension
Price: compare an identical payment design
Start with the total premium and then inspect how it is paid. Ask whether the quote uses a borrower-paid monthly premium, a single premium, a lender-paid structure or another arrangement available in that transaction. Compare the same coverage, term and loan assumptions; otherwise a lower number may simply reflect less coverage or a different payment schedule.

A change in loan amount, value, credit data, occupancy, documentation or product type can move the file into another pricing or eligibility tier. Do not infer that the insurer with the lowest indicative number will remain lowest after underwriting.
Underwriting fit: acceptance is specific to the file
Eligibility depends on the actual borrower and property, not on a company’s general reputation. Confirm requirements for occupancy, property type, loan-to-value ratio, income documentation, credit history, reserves and the transaction type. If a system returns a referral or a conditional result, ask which condition must be satisfied and whether a manual review is available.
Never state that one of the three companies “accepts” a loan category unless the current guide or a loan-specific decision supports that conclusion. Guidelines change, and an insurer may be available through one lender’s process but not another’s.

Policy and administration: examine the work after approval
Compare the policy documents and the lender’s operating procedure. Important details include how coverage is activated, how loan data is transmitted, who receives notices, how amendments are recorded and how servicing transfers are handled. Ask whether the lender’s staff has dedicated training or a named escalation team for the insurer.
Technology matters because errors in data, notices or status updates can delay closing or complicate servicing. A smooth application interface is useful, but it does not replace review of the legal policy and the lender’s responsibilities.
Claims and loss mitigation: focus on process, not slogans
Claims handling becomes relevant when a covered default produces a potential loss. Ask the lender how it documents the loss, submits the claim, monitors status and resolves requests for additional information. Also ask how the insurer participates in loss-mitigation decisions and what the lender’s escalation route is when a workout or claim is disputed.
Radian and Essent describe claims, loss mitigation and service as competitive dimensions. Those statements establish what to compare, not that one company delivers better outcomes in every case. Independent performance data for a particular lender and period is more informative than a general corporate description.
Financial strength and GSE eligibility: verify the current legal entity
Look beyond a parent-company name. Radian distinguishes Radian Group from Radian Guaranty, its wholly owned subsidiary that provides mortgage-insurance products and services. The relevant rating and eligibility information is generally tied to the operating insurer and the transaction’s requirements, so the lender should identify the exact counterparty.

MGIC’s explanation of the Private Mortgage Insurer Eligibility Requirements (PMIERs) says they include financial, business, quality-control and transaction-approval requirements. It also explains that available assets must at least equal minimum required assets and that the government-sponsored enterprises can amend the requirements. Meeting an eligibility requirement is not a guarantee that every future claim will be paid or that a policy will produce a particular recovery.
For any rating or capital figure, record the agency, rating category, legal entity and publication date. A rating is a dated opinion, not a permanent characteristic, and eligibility rules can change after the quote.
Service, relationships and technology: ask the lender for evidence
Service can affect turn times, conditions, policy corrections and post-close problem solving. Ask the lender which carrier has the most reliable response for this channel, how exceptions are escalated and whether the lender tracks rework, suspense items or delayed decisions. Public filings rarely quantify the service experience of an individual lender, so a lender’s own operating history is the most relevant evidence.

Market context: useful scale, not a quality score
MGIC Investment Corporation’s 2025 annual-report materials, using a table attributed to Inside Mortgage Finance dated February 19, 2026 or to SEC filings, estimate that private mortgage insurance represented 38.0% of total primary mortgage-insurance volume in 2025, down from 41.1% in 2024. The same 2025 estimate assigns 34.3% to FHA, 26.8% to VA and 0.9% to USDA.

They are not shares among private insurers and do not measure a carrier’s price, claims service or suitability for an individual loan. Private MI competes with government-insured channels, so a lender may first determine which financing channel fits before comparing private insurers.
Radian reported an approximately 18% share of new insurance written within private MI in 2025, compared with approximately 17% in 2024. Milliman reported a $311 billion full-year 2025 private-mortgage-insurer new-insurance-written market. These are historical market estimates, not forecasts or evidence that a larger or growing share means better execution for a particular borrower.

Company context to keep current
Radian
Radian says Radian Guaranty is its wholly owned mortgage-insurance subsidiary. Radian Group reported that it acquired Inigo, a Lloyd’s specialty insurer, on February 2, 2026, and described a planned transformation into a global multiline specialty insurer. It also described planned divestitures of its Mortgage Conduit, Title and Real Estate Services businesses, expected no later than the end of the third quarter of 2026.

Before relying on this context, check subsequent company filings to see whether the planned divestitures closed and whether the mortgage-insurance operating entity or eligibility status changed.
MGIC
MGIC’s disclosures emphasize risk-based pricing, customized rate plans, underwriting, service and PMIERs-related financial and operational requirements. Use those disclosures to identify questions for the lender, not as a promise that MGIC will be cheapest or accept a particular file.
Essent
Essent’s annual-report material lists price, underwriting, service, customer relationships, financial strength, policy terms, loss mitigation, product features and technology as competition factors. The material supports a balanced comparison across those dimensions; it does not establish an outcome ranking against Radian or MGIC.
Common comparison mistakes and how to correct them
- Comparing unlike quotes: Correct it by matching loan amount, value, LTV, coverage, term, payment structure and borrower assumptions.
- Using a generic online rate as a promise: Correct it by requesting a current lender quote tied to the actual file.
- Treating market share as quality: Correct it by separating historical volume estimates from price, service and claims evidence.
- Confusing a parent company with the insurer: Correct it by naming the operating legal entity and checking its current rating and eligibility.
- Assuming PMIERs is a payment guarantee: Correct it by treating PMIERs as eligibility and capital requirements, then reviewing the policy and claim process.
- Relying only on insurer marketing: Correct it by asking the lender for response-time, rework and escalation experience.
- Ignoring changes before closing: Correct it by rerunning the comparison after material changes to credit, value, loan amount, occupancy or program.
- Assuming the 2026 Radian acquisition changed PMI execution: Correct it by checking later filings and the current Radian Guaranty workflow.
A lender-ready checklist
Send the following request when shopping a mortgage or reviewing a refinance:
- Quote Radian, MGIC and Essent, where each is available, using identical borrower, property, LTV, coverage and payment assumptions.
- Identify the quote date, premium structure and every assumption that could trigger a reprice.
- State whether each result is approved, conditionally approved, referred or still an estimate.
- List policy administration, servicing, data-correction and escalation contacts.
- Explain the claim and loss-mitigation submission path used by this lender.
- Provide the current rating agency, rating date and operating legal entity for the insurer selected.
- Confirm the insurer’s current eligibility for the required GSE or investor channel.
- Explain what happens if the loan amount, value, occupancy, credit data or program changes before closing.
Bottom line for borrowers and mortgage professionals
The defensible way to compare Radian, MGIC and Essent is loan-specific and lender-specific. Start with a same-assumption quote and underwriting decision, then test the policy, servicing, claims process, financial strength and current GSE eligibility. Historical market shares, a parent company’s size or a generic premium claim cannot replace that file-level comparison.
