RACV Home Buildings and Contents insurance can cover both the home’s structure and belongings under one policy, but the actual protection depends on the policy certificate, sums insured, selected options, excesses and applicable policy wording. RACV’s currently linked Home Insurance Product Disclosure Statement (PDS) lists up to 17 insured events; those event names are subject to definitions, exclusions, limits and any cover selection recorded for the policy.
This is a document-based review of RACV’s published policy terms and product information, not a claims-performance assessment or a price quote. The applicable wording includes a PDS prepared in 2022 and supplemented through October 2023; check the current policy index, your certificate and any supplements before relying on a term.

What does RACV Buildings and Contents insurance cover?
The combined policy addresses two different kinds of property: the home’s structure and your household belongings. RACV also offers Buildings-only and Contents-only configurations. The buildings sum insured caps payment for building repair or rebuild, while the contents sum insured caps repair or replacement of contents, subject to the policy terms and other-benefit provisions. A combined policy does not make the two sums interchangeable.
The PDS lists up to 17 insured events, including animal damage, broken glass where applicable to the building or item, earthquake, explosion, fire, flood, impact damage, lightning, rainwater run-off, riot or civil commotion, storm, storm surge, theft or attempted theft, tsunami, vandalism or malicious acts, and water and oil leaks. An event appearing on the list does not mean every loss associated with it is covered: definitions, exclusions, conditions, limits, the selected cover and your certificate all matter. RACV’s home insurance information and the PDS should be read together, with the PDS and certificate taking precedence for individual cover.

- 12-Month Warranty: Backed by a 12-month manufacturer warranty for peace of mind. Designed to meet strict quality control standards for reliable everyday performance.
The PDS also describes other benefits, which can include building materials, demolition and debris removal, food spoilage, keys and locks, locating the cause of damage, rebuilding fees, temporary accommodation and certain strata-related benefits. Whether a benefit applies depends on the policy type and its conditions. For liability, the current linked PDS states a limit of $20 million per incident under Buildings Insurance and $20 million per incident under Contents Insurance, including legal costs when RACV’s lawyers handle the claim. These are published policy limits, not an independent measure of claims outcomes.
Flood, rainwater run-off and storm surge need a certificate check
RACV’s October 2023 supplementary wording says some policyholders may be offered the option to remove flood cover. If RACV offers that option and agrees to its removal, rainwater run-off and storm-surge cover are removed as well; the policy certificate records the choice. Do not assume that these covers are either included or removable in every policy. Check the certificate and applicable supplementary wording.
What optional covers are available?
The policy documents list Accidental Damage and Burn out of electric motors – fusion as optional covers. Contents policyholders may also select Valuable Items Cover and Portable Items Cover. Options are not automatically included: confirm availability, eligibility, excess and selection on your certificate.

Accidental Damage
RACV describes this option as cover for unintentional damage and says a $300 excess applies to accidental-damage claims in its combined home and contents product information accessed 7 October 2026. The amount is RACV’s published figure; check your own guide and certificate to confirm the excess that applies to you.
Valuable and portable items
These options may be relevant if you want cover for particular valuables or belongings taken away from home, but the general contents sum insured does not erase category limits. In the PDS’s described Valuable Items or Portable Items contexts, an individual item is subject to a $10,000 maximum unless listed separately for a higher amount. Portable items taken outside Australia or New Zealand have a stated total cap of $10,000. Check the option’s terms and whether the item is listed on your policy; do not assume a general contents limit covers an item without restriction.
Exclusions and responsibilities to check
RACV’s product summary gives examples of excluded damage: pre-existing damage, wear and tear, intentional damage by household members or guests, and damage caused by vermin or insects. The PDS also requires reasonable care to protect property and to maintain the site in good repair and condition. This is not a complete exclusions list; the PDS, supplementary statements and certificate govern the particular policy.

RACV’s own guidance is to insure the home and contents for their full replacement value. That makes sums insured a central part of assessing fit. Estimate the cost to rebuild the home and replace belongings at current prices, then revisit the amounts after renovations or acquiring valuable items and at renewal. An automatic adjustment, if one appears in policy documents, is not proof that the amount remains adequate. RACV puts the central instruction plainly: “Make sure you insure your home and contents for their full replacement value.”
How much should you insure your contents for?
Use the cost of replacing the belongings you want insured, rather than their original purchase price or second-hand value, as your working estimate. Go room by room and account for ordinary items as well as electronics, furniture, clothing, appliances and any higher-value possessions. Keep the estimate current as you acquire items or prices change. Then compare it with the contents sum insured and any category limits or separately listed items in your policy.
RACV may ask for proof of ownership during a contents claim. Receipts are useful, but its claims guidance also names bank or credit-card statements, packaging, photographs and valuation certificates as possible records. A home inventory organizer can help keep item details, photographs and receipts together; it is optional and does not increase cover or guarantee a settlement.

How much does RACV home insurance cost?
There is no representative premium that can be stated without a current quote for a particular property and policy. RACV’s January 2026 Premium, Excess and Discounts Guide says premiums are individually determined and may take into account:
- Property address, construction materials and age, occupancy, and flood or other natural-peril risk.
- Buildings and contents sums insured, chosen options, excess and alarm information.
- Age, payment frequency, discounts, government charges and commercial considerations.
RACV says premiums can change at renewal. Treat any amount as specific to the quote, address, circumstances and date rather than as a standard product price.

RACV’s current claims information lists possible basic excess levels from $100 to $5,000 and says the customer selects an excess at purchase. A special excess may apply in addition. The endpoints are not a quote and do not establish that every amount is available to every customer. Check the current guide and your certificate for the excesses that apply, including any special excess, and consider whether you could afford them when making a claim.

How to compare RACV with another policy
A headline list of insured events is not enough to establish which policy is more suitable. Compare the actual PDS and certificate for each quote, using the same assumptions about property, sums insured and excess. RACV itself recommends like-for-like comparison. Check:
- Insured events and their definitions, exclusions and any flood-related selections.
- Buildings and contents sums insured, category payout limits and separately listed items.
- Optional covers and other benefits, including the conditions for temporary accommodation or other assistance.
- Basic and special excesses, and whether you could meet them.
- The quoted premium, payment terms and applicable multi-policy discounts.
There is no basis here to claim RACV is cheaper, more comprehensive or better at settling claims than the market. A useful comparison depends on your own quote, policy wording and exposure to particular perils.
What to expect when making a claim
RACV says claims can be lodged online and through phone and app channels. Its published guidance recommends gathering incident details and time, photos of damage, any necessary damage report, proof of ownership for contents and a police or fire report where needed. RACV may assess building damage by inspection or report, and contents claims may be assessed using photos or ownership evidence. Depending on the claim, settlement may involve repairs, replacement through suppliers, store credit or cash.

Which policy documents should you read?
RACV’s policy index identifies the October 2023 PDS and Policy Booklet as its currently linked home policy wording, and the January 2026 Premium, Excess and Discounts Guide as current for policies within its stated effective dates. The linked PDS has a 2022 base booklet and later supplements. Use the wording that applies to your policy, not an older copy found elsewhere, and check the certificate for selected covers, sums insured, excesses and special conditions. Because terms, underwriting and pricing can change, confirm the current documents before purchase or renewal. The document-based figures and options above reflect RACV/issuer materials accessed 7 October 2026.
