RACV Basics Travel Insurance: What It Covers and What It Leaves Out

RACV Basics is an international single-trip travel insurance policy with unlimited overseas medical and hospital cover, but it excludes cancellation costs and rental-car excess. RACV’s published summary also lists up to $2,000 for luggage and up to $5,000 for emergency expenses. Those are headline limits, not a promise that every loss or expense will be covered: the applicable policy documents set the full terms and exclusions.

What is RACV Basics?

RACV Basics is the entry-level option in RACV’s international single-trip travel insurance range, alongside Essentials and Comprehensive. CHOICE identifies Tokio Marine as the underwriter. This is travel insurance, not RACV roadside assistance or car insurance. CHOICE’s public listing does not show its expert rating or detailed score categories to non-members, so there is not enough public evidence there to report a score or recommendation.

What does RACV Basics cover?

RACV’s comparison page lists these headline benefits for Basics:

Benefit RACV’s published summary
Overseas medical and hospital Unlimited
Luggage Up to $2,000
Emergency expenses Up to $5,000
Cancellation fees and lost deposits Not covered
Rental-car excess Not covered

These figures are RACV’s product-summary limits, not blanket guarantees. Policy conditions, exclusions, limits and sub-limits can affect whether a particular claim qualifies and how much may be payable. Read the PDS/FSG that applies to your policy before relying on a benefit. RACV’s international travel insurance comparison and Basics summary provide the published overview.

What does Basics leave out?

Cancellation costs and lost deposits

RACV lists cancellation fees and lost deposits as not covered under Basics. If you have substantial prepaid, non-refundable bookings, compare the other plan levels and check their cancellation terms rather than assuming the unlimited medical benefit protects those costs.

Rental-car excess

Basics does not include rental-car-excess cover in RACV’s comparison. If you plan to hire a car, check the excess you could owe under the rental agreement and whether another plan or separate arrangement covers it.

How does Basics compare with RACV Essentials and Comprehensive?

RACV says all three international single-trip options include unlimited overseas medical and hospital cover. Essentials and Comprehensive offer higher limits and additional benefits, including cancellation options and rental-car-excess cover. The comparison below reflects RACV’s plan summary; it is not a substitute for the policy wording.

Feature Basics Essentials and Comprehensive
Overseas medical and hospital Unlimited Unlimited
Luggage and emergency-expense limits RACV lists up to $2,000 for luggage and up to $5,000 for emergency expenses Higher limits than Basics; exact limits depend on the plan summary and applicable policy documents
Cancellation fees and lost deposits Not covered Cancellation options are available; check the selected policy’s terms and limits
Rental-car excess Not covered Cover is available; check the selected policy’s terms and limits

For your trip, compare cancellation and prepaid costs, car hire, luggage, emergency expenses, exclusions, optional activities or cruise cover, who is insured, and the quote for your dates and circumstances. A lower tier is not automatically better value: the premium and the protection you actually need both matter. RACV notes that its web comparison is a summary and directs customers to the PDS/FSG. See RACV’s plan comparison.

Which policy documents should you check?

RACV’s document index lists a combined Travel Insurance PDS/FSG dated 31 March 2026 as the current document for policies with a start date on or after 31 March 2026 at 12:01am. If your policy starts at another time, identify the document that applies to that contract rather than assuming this edition governs it. The PDS/FSG contains the full terms, conditions, exclusions, limits and sub-limits; the Certificate of Insurance records policy-specific details such as dates and price. RACV policy documents.

Is RACV Basics worth considering?

Basics may suit a traveller who prioritises overseas medical and hospital cover and is comfortable without cancellation or rental-car-excess protection, subject to the policy wording. It may be a poor fit if either excluded benefit matters to your trip. Compare the applicable terms and an actual quote across RACV’s options before deciding; the available evidence does not establish that Basics is cheaper or better value for every traveller.
