Quordle Classic gives you nine shared guesses to solve four different five-letter words. Every word you submit is evaluated against each unsolved board, but the colors are calculated independently for each answer. Green marks a letter in the correct position, yellow marks a letter that belongs in that board’s answer but is in the wrong position, and gray means the letter is not in that board’s answer. The current mode selector also lists variants with different attempt limits, so the nine-guess rule applies to Classic, not automatically to every Quordle mode.

This guide explains the complete turn cycle, how to read the four-part keyboard, what the current modes actually say, and why “Hard Mode” is not a defined option in the selector reviewed on October 8, 2026.

Quordle Classic rules at a glance

The current Quordle play page describes Classic as finding all four five-letter words within nine attempts. You type one five-letter guess, submit it once, and that row produces feedback on four answer boards. A correct answer on one board does not remove the guess from the shared attempt count; the row has already been spent for the turn.

Rule What it means in Classic
Boards Four separate hidden answers are solved in parallel.
Answer length Each answer is five letters, and submitted entries are five-letter words.
Attempts You have nine total guess rows for the four-board puzzle.
Guess scope One submitted word is checked against every unsolved board.
Feedback Each board returns its own green, yellow, and gray pattern.
Objective Solve all four answers before the nine rows are used.

Those mechanics are the rules presented on the current Quordle play page. The page is an English-language browser experience; the retrieved material does not establish that every regional, archived, or third-party implementation uses exactly the same limits.

How one Quordle turn works

1. Enter one five-letter word

Choose a valid five-letter entry and submit it. Quordle does not give you a separate guess box for each board in the shared Classic layout. The word occupies one row and is sent to all boards that still need solving.

2. Read four independent result patterns

After submission, inspect the returned colors board by board. The first board’s colors describe its hidden answer only; they do not describe the answer on board two, three, or four. The same letter can therefore be green on one board, yellow on another, and gray on a third.

3. Use the clues to choose the next shared word

Combine the information from all four boards before submitting the next row. A useful next guess may test an unknown letter for one board while placing a known letter in a new position for another. Because the row is shared, every guess should serve at least one unresolved question somewhere on the layout.

4. Continue until the puzzle ends

  1. Type a five-letter word.
  2. Submit it and wait for all board feedback to appear.
  3. Interpret each board’s colors separately.
  4. Enter another shared guess using the accumulated clues.
  5. Stop when all four answers are solved or when the ninth Classic row has been used.

The key accounting detail is that nine means nine submitted rows for the whole four-board challenge, not nine guesses per word. Solving one board early does not create extra rows for the remaining boards.

What the colors mean

The game page uses the word STARE as its explanatory example. In the example, S is in the answer and in the correct position, A is in the answer but in the wrong position, and T, R, and E are not in that answer. Those statements describe one particular board; the colors can differ on the other three.

Color Meaning on the board showing it How to act on the clue
Green The letter and its position both match that board’s answer. Keep that letter in that position in later guesses for the board.
Yellow The answer contains the letter, but not in the position you tried. Move the letter to a different position while preserving it as a candidate.
Gray That letter is not in that board’s answer. Exclude it from future guesses intended to solve that board.

Gray is board-specific. A gray A on board one means A is absent from board one’s answer; it does not prove that A is absent from all four answers. Likewise, a yellow letter on one board can be gray on another because the hidden words are different.

The four-part keyboard

Quordle’s on-screen keyboard also reflects the four independent boards. According to the Quordle FAQ, each key is divided into four sections corresponding to the four boards. Those quadrants let you see that a letter has different status in different answers.

For example, one quadrant of a key may show green because the letter is fixed in the right position on board one, while another quadrant is yellow because the same letter exists elsewhere in board two’s answer. A gray quadrant means the letter has been ruled out for that board. Read the keyboard as four small status displays rather than as one universal verdict for the letter.

Why the shared row changes the puzzle

You cannot spend a turn on only one board

Every submitted word is a four-board experiment. Even if you are concentrating on a nearly solved answer, the same row is also checked against the other unsolved boards. This makes broad information valuable: a word that tests several uncertain letters can be more useful than a narrowly targeted guess that helps only one board.

A solved board does not change the Classic limit

The Classic objective remains four answers in nine rows. Once one answer is known, your remaining rows still belong to the same puzzle and must be used to finish the other boards. The page describes guesses as applying to unsolved boards, so feedback should be interpreted in the context of which boards remain open.

Patterns must be kept separate

Write or mentally retain four clue sets. If board one gives you a green S in the first position and board three gives you a yellow S, those are not contradictory: they are clues about different hidden words. Mixing them is one of the fastest ways to reject a valid answer or place a letter incorrectly.

Classic, Extreme, Chill, and the other listed modes

The current mode selector at dev.quordle.com lists several modes. Its display, retrieved on October 8, 2026, shows that attempt counts and vocabulary descriptions can change. Do not carry Classic’s nine-row limit into another mode without checking that mode’s current description.

Mode shown in the selector Details stated by the selector What is not established by the retrieved description
Classic Nine guesses for four words. No additional restrictions are stated in the cited summary.
Extreme Eight guesses and more unusual words. The precise word list, selection process, and any further mechanics are not specified.
Chill Twelve guesses and fewer unusual words. The exact vocabulary policy and other rules are not specified.
Sequence The mode is listed. The retrieved selector does not provide enough detail to describe its order or win condition accurately.
Rescue The mode is listed. The retrieved selector does not define its rescue mechanic or attempt rules.
Image The mode is listed. The retrieved selector does not explain its image clues or scoring rules.

Mode availability and wording can change. The selector page displayed a Daily Classic puzzle alongside the additional modes when it was retrieved, while the play page showed Daily and Practice controls. Those labels do not, by themselves, establish a universal schedule or prove that every mode offers a daily round.

Does Quordle have a Hard Mode?

The current mode selector reviewed does not show an option named Hard Mode, and the reviewed play-page rules do not define Hard Mode restrictions. That is a narrow statement about the current implementation represented by those pages, not proof that no other Quordle site, archived version, or community variant has ever used the label.

Do not automatically import the restrictions associated with another word game’s hard setting. The retrieved Quordle material does not say that a green letter must always be reused, that a yellow letter must always be played, or that any particular guess-validation rule is enforced. If a site or app you are using displays a Hard Mode switch, read that implementation’s own instructions before assuming what it requires.

Daily, Practice, and random-round claims

The current play page presents Daily and Practice buttons, but the detailed rules available there do not establish their exact cadence, whether every mode has a daily answer, or how answers are selected in each control.

The separate FAQ says that its version selects four random dictionary words for each round and allows unlimited rounds. Treat that as a description of that FAQ’s implementation at quordle.game/faq. It should not be generalized to every Quordle-branded page, especially when the current play page separately exposes Daily and Practice options and the mode selector describes a Daily Classic puzzle.

Common rule-reading mistakes

Counting nine guesses per answer

There are nine Classic rows total, not nine rows for each of the four words. A guess is shared across the puzzle.

Treating a gray key as globally eliminated

Check the key’s individual quadrant. Gray on one board does not eliminate that letter from the other three answers.

Assuming one color pattern applies everywhere

Compare colors only within the board that produced them. Identical positions in the submitted word can receive different colors on different boards.

Assuming every listed mode works like Classic

Extreme and Chill explicitly change the attempt allowance and vocabulary description, while Sequence, Rescue, and Image are listed without enough detail in the retrieved selector to infer their complete rules.

Calling any stricter play style “Hard Mode”

A self-imposed rule, a community variant, and a named in-product mode are different things. The current selector reviewed does not define a Quordle mode with that name.

A reliable checklist for each row

  • Confirm that the entry has five letters.
  • Submit it once and wait for feedback on all open boards.
  • Record green positions separately for each board.
  • Move yellow letters to positions not yet tested on that board.
  • Exclude gray letters only from the board that marked them gray.
  • Check the four keyboard quadrants before choosing the next word.
  • Remember how many of the nine Classic rows remain for the entire puzzle.
  • Verify the selected mode before applying any attempt-count assumption.

With those distinctions in place, Quordle is a shared-information puzzle rather than four independent games: one word consumes one row, four boards return four clue sets, and the color meaning always belongs to the board that displayed it.
