What “quiet” means for a hard drive
Idle and seek acoustics describe different operating conditions. A drive can be relatively unobtrusive while idle yet more noticeable when its heads move to read or write data. Seagate labels its IronWolf figures as typical idle and typical seek values, so keep those states separate when comparing models.

Which drive fits your use?
High-capacity NAS with idle noise in mind
The helium-filled Toshiba N300 models from 12 TB to 22 TB are a candidate if you need a NAS-oriented drive and care about idle acoustics. Toshiba states 20 dB typical acoustic output in idle mode for that range; it also specifies 7,200 rpm, 24/7 operation support, and a three-year limited warranty. Those specifications do not establish seek noise or prove that the N300 is quieter than another drive under the same conditions.
Lower-capacity NAS comparison
Seagate’s IronWolf data sheet gives separate typical idle and seek figures for its 2 TB, 4 TB, and 6 TB models. The cited sheet lists the 2 TB model as CMR and 5,400 rpm. Because the listed acoustic figures vary by capacity, verify the exact model and data sheet rather than relying on the IronWolf family name.

NAS compatibility and recording technology
Quietness is only one part of choosing a NAS drive. Check the requirements of the NAS, array, and file system, including whether CMR is required. WD classifies Red Plus and Red Pro as CMR and recommends those lines for ZFS systems; confirm the current guidance and the exact drive SKU against WD’s SMR and CMR NAS information.
Specialized video recording
Toshiba’s V300 is aimed at DVR, TV, NVR, and surveillance uses, and advertises Silent Seek Technology. Toshiba lists capacities up to 3 TB and a workload of 72 TB per year. It also claims energy consumption up to 25% lower than its P300 7,200 rpm model; that is an energy comparison, not a noise measurement. Storage where silence matters most
An SSD has no rotating platters or mechanical read/write heads, so it is the more direct choice for a noise-sensitive storage tier. Choose capacity, endurance, interface, and cost for your workload; use an HDD only where its capacity or role justifies accepting mechanical noise.
How to choose a quieter HDD
- Identify the exact workload. Decide whether the drive is for a desktop, NAS, or DVR/NVR system, then check the device maker’s compatibility guidance.
- Match capacity to the exact model. Acoustic specifications can differ among capacities in the same product family. Do not infer one model’s figures from another’s.
- Compare idle and seek separately. Look for both conditions in the manufacturer’s current specification sheet. If one is missing, treat it as unknown rather than assuming the idle value describes active operation.
- Confirm recording technology. Check whether CMR or SMR suits the intended workload and array. WD’s guidance distinguishes its product tiers and recommends CMR Red Plus or Red Pro for ZFS systems.
- Inspect the installation for vibration and resonance. Check how the drive is mounted and whether the enclosure or nearby surface amplifies noise. The cited manufacturer pages do not quantify the effect for any particular case or NAS, so treat this as a practical troubleshooting check rather than a guaranteed fix.
- Consider an SSD for the noise-sensitive tier. If even seek activity is unacceptable, move the storage that must be quiet to solid-state media instead of trying to find a mechanical drive that is silent.
Why there is no definitive “quietest HDD” winner here
The cited specifications cover selected capacities and use different acoustic units and conditions; they are not normalized measurements across brands. Toshiba publishes an idle claim for a defined helium-filled N300 capacity range, while Seagate publishes separate idle and seek figures for specific IronWolf capacities. WD’s cited Red Plus material does not supply a directly comparable noise table. A reliable winner would require comparable measurements for the exact models under the same test conditions.
