Google’s Quick Tap is a back-of-phone shortcut for supported Pixel devices. It works on the Pixel 4a (5G) and later, and it is enabled at Settings > System > Gestures > Quick tap. Turn on Use Quick tap, choose an action, and tap the back of the phone twice.

If Quick tap is missing, the phone is usually not a supported Pixel rather than a device waiting for a permission. If the menu exists but the gesture does nothing, work through accessory removal, cleaning, updates, a restart, and Safe Mode testing in that order.

What Quick Tap is—and which phones support it

Quick Tap is Google’s double-back-tap gesture for Pixel phones. A tap pair on the rear panel can run a shortcut without opening an app first. Google documents support beginning with the Pixel 4a (5G) and continuing on later Pixel models.

Supported actions include taking a screenshot, playing or pausing media, showing notifications, and opening an app. The exact action is selected in Quick tap settings; it is not a universal Android command that every manufacturer exposes.

Why the setting may not exist

Android’s gesture pages vary by manufacturer. A Samsung Galaxy, Motorola, OnePlus, or another non-Pixel phone may offer its own gestures, but it will not necessarily contain Google’s Quick tap page. An older Pixel released before the Pixel 4a (5G) is outside Google’s documented support range as well.

Therefore, a missing menu is first a compatibility question. Installing a permission, sideloading an app, or changing accessibility settings cannot turn unsupported hardware into a Google Quick Tap device.

Check compatibility before changing settings

Phone situation What to expect Best next step
Pixel 4a (5G) or a later Pixel Quick tap should be available in System gestures, subject to the phone’s software state. Open the documented menu and enable it.
Pixel model older than Pixel 4a (5G) Google does not list it as supported for Quick Tap. Look for another built-in shortcut or a manufacturer-supported alternative.
Samsung Galaxy, Motorola, OnePlus, or another non-Pixel Android phone The Google Quick tap menu may not exist. Use that manufacturer’s support documentation and gesture settings.
A supported Pixel whose menu disappeared after an update or reset The feature may be disabled, moved, or affected by a software problem. Restart, install pending system updates, and check the exact path again.

The model name is normally available in the phone’s About phone page. Confirm the complete model, not just a family name such as “Pixel” or “Galaxy,” because support depends on the specific hardware generation.

Turn on Quick Tap and choose what the double tap does

  1. Open Settings.
  2. Tap System.
  3. Tap Gestures.
  4. Tap Quick tap.
  5. Turn on Use Quick tap.
  6. Select the action you want, such as Screenshot, Play or pause media, Show notifications, or Open app.
  7. Return to the home screen and tap the back of the phone twice to test the selected action.

The gesture is a pair of taps on the rear of the handset, not two taps on the display. Use two distinct taps close together rather than one long press. If the selected action is a screenshot, check whether a screenshot appears; if it is media control, test while audio is available; for notifications, look for the notification shade; and for an app, confirm that the chosen app opens.

What the setup page proves

If you can see Quick tap and the Use Quick tap switch, the phone has passed the basic hardware and software compatibility check. The documented setup does not ask for a separate microphone, camera, location, or accessibility permission. The required controls are the supported Pixel hardware, the switch, and a selected action.

Quick Tap is enabled but does not detect taps

When the menu exists and the switch is on, use this sequence. Change one condition at a time so you know which check solved the problem.

1. Remove the case temporarily

Take off the protective case and test the gesture with the bare phone. A rigid, thick, or poorly fitted case can change how impacts reach the device. If Quick Tap works without the case, inspect the case for an unusually stiff back, raised internal ribs, magnets, or a fit that leaves pressure on the phone. Refit it and test again; replace it if the gesture fails only when that case is installed.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

2. Remove the screen protector for a controlled test

Google’s Pixel touch-response guidance recommends temporarily removing accessories when touch behavior is unreliable. Although Quick Tap is triggered on the rear, a protector can be relevant when other touch symptoms occur at the same time. Do not discard a protector immediately: remove it only long enough to isolate the cause, then reinstall or replace it if appropriate.

3. Clean the phone

Power or lock the phone, then wipe the exterior with a soft, dry, lint-free cloth suitable for electronics. Remove moisture, grease, dust, and debris from the back and edges. Do not pour liquid into openings or use a cleaning method that could damage the finish. Test Quick Tap again after the surface is dry.

4. Install pending system updates

Open the system update page in Settings and install any update offered for the phone. Keep the phone charged and follow the on-screen restart instructions. After the update completes, return to Settings > System > Gestures > Quick tap and verify that Use Quick tap remains enabled.

5. Restart and retest

Restart the Pixel normally, wait until startup has completed, and perform several tests with the same action selected. A restart clears a temporary service or sensor state without changing your personal data.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

6. Test in a consistent way

Use the same area on the back, the same two-tap rhythm, and the same selected action for each trial. Confirm that the phone is responding to other controls, such as the display and power button. If only one selected action appears ineffective, switch temporarily to another built-in action. This separates gesture detection from a problem with the target action itself.

Use Safe Mode to find an app conflict

Google recommends Safe Mode when a downloaded app may be interfering with touch behavior. Safe Mode starts Android with downloaded apps disabled, so it is a diagnostic comparison rather than a permanent operating mode.

  1. Save your work and open the phone’s power menu.
  2. Use the Safe Mode option shown for your Pixel’s software version. The exact button or menu wording can vary.
  3. After the phone starts in Safe Mode, open the system gesture settings and test Quick Tap several times.
  4. Restart normally to leave Safe Mode.

If Quick Tap works in Safe Mode but not during a normal start, remove recently installed or recently updated apps one at a time. Restart and test after each removal. This method identifies a conflict without deleting many apps at once.

If only one app is affected—for example, the gesture opens the app but that app does not respond as expected—update that app first. If the behavior continues, contact the app’s developer. A result that changes only inside one app is different from a gesture that fails across the entire system.

Permissions are rarely the reason Quick Tap is blocked

Google’s Quick Tap setup instructions do not require a special permission or an accessibility grant. On a supported Pixel, the documented requirements are the Quick tap setting, the Use Quick tap switch, and a selected action.

If Quick tap is missing on a non-Pixel phone, treat the absence as a hardware or manufacturer-interface limitation rather than a permission problem. Granting broad accessibility access to an unrelated third-party app is not a substitute for the built-in feature and can create unnecessary privacy and security exposure.

If a third-party shortcut app claims it needs accessibility access, review that app separately: understand what it can control, install it only from a source you trust, and remove the grant if you no longer use the app. That advice concerns the third-party tool, not Google’s built-in Quick Tap, which has no documented special permission requirement.

Do not confuse Quick Tap with Motion Sense

Motion Sense is a separate capability associated with the Pixel 4. It detects nearby hand movements rather than two impacts on the back of the phone. Its troubleshooting rules must not be used as automatic Quick Tap requirements.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.
Characteristic Quick Tap Motion Sense
Supported hardware described by Google Pixel 4a (5G) and later Separate Pixel 4 feature
Trigger Two taps on the back of the phone Nearby hand movement detected above the phone
Typical controls Screenshot, media play or pause, notifications, or opening an app Motion-based controls documented for that feature
Relevant troubleshooting Check accessories, clean the phone, update, restart, and use Safe Mode for app conflicts Google’s guidance discusses Battery Saver or Airplane mode, country approval, toggling Motion Sense, restarting, and keeping the top of the phone unobstructed

Country availability, an unobstructed top edge, Battery Saver, and Airplane mode are Motion Sense considerations. They are not prerequisites listed for Quick Tap. Applying them to a Quick Tap failure can send you in the wrong direction.

What to do when Quick tap is missing from Settings

On a non-Pixel phone

Search the manufacturer’s support pages for “back tap,” “rear tap,” “gestures,” or “shortcuts,” and inspect the phone’s own gesture menu. Manufacturers can place similar controls under different headings and may support different actions. Do not expect Google’s exact Settings > System > Gestures > Quick tap path to appear on every Android device.

On an older Pixel

Check the model against Google’s supported starting point of Pixel 4a (5G). If it predates that model, the missing menu is consistent with the documented compatibility limit. Use another built-in gesture or a power-button shortcut instead of repeatedly changing permissions.

On a supported Pixel

Restart the phone, install available system updates, and check the menu again. If the phone is definitely a Pixel 4a (5G) or later and Quick tap remains absent, record the model and software build before contacting Pixel support. A missing setting after those checks indicates a system-level issue that ordinary permission changes are unlikely to fix.

Alternatives when your Android phone has no Quick Tap

Use the comparison below to choose a shortcut that your phone actually supports. Availability and labels depend on the manufacturer and model, so verify the option in the phone’s own documentation.

Shortcut type Hardware availability Trigger location Setup approach Typical trade-off
Google Quick Tap Pixel 4a (5G) and later Back of phone, double tap Settings > System > Gestures > Quick tap Convenient rear gesture; can be affected by accessories or touch-related faults.
Manufacturer back-tap gesture Only on models whose manufacturer provides it Usually the rear panel Manufacturer-specific gesture or shortcut settings Labels, actions, and sensitivity differ by phone.
Power-button shortcut Common on many Android phones, but actions vary Power button, often with a double press System or button-gesture settings Easy to reach, but can conflict with camera, wallet, or emergency shortcuts.
Screen gesture or navigation shortcut Depends on Android version and manufacturer Display edge or navigation area System navigation or gesture settings Works without rear-tap hardware, but may be harder to use inside full-screen apps.

When comparing alternatives, check five details: which models support the feature, where the trigger occurs, the exact setup path, whether the phone must be unlocked for the chosen action, and how cases or touch hardware affect reliability. Documentation may not answer every detail for every model, so avoid assuming that behavior is identical to Pixel Quick Tap.

A compact diagnostic decision path

  • No Quick tap menu: confirm the exact model. A non-Pixel phone or an older Pixel is likely outside the documented hardware range; use the manufacturer’s gestures instead.
  • Menu present, switch off: enable Use Quick tap, choose one action, and test the rear double tap.
  • Switch on, no response: remove the case and screen protector temporarily, clean the phone, install updates, restart, and test again.
  • Works only in Safe Mode: remove recent downloaded apps one at a time and retest after each change.
  • One action behaves incorrectly: select another built-in action. If the gesture works with the second action, update or troubleshoot the original app or action.
  • Still unavailable on a supported Pixel: contact Google Pixel support or use an authorized repair route after documenting the checks already completed.

When to contact Pixel support or arrange repair

Escalate after you have confirmed a Pixel 4a (5G) or later, enabled Quick tap, selected an action, installed system updates, restarted, removed accessories, cleaned the phone, and completed a Safe Mode comparison. Tell support the exact model, the selected action, whether the menu is present, and which steps changed the behavior.

Google’s cited touch-response guidance does not identify a Quick Tap-specific replacement part or required accessory. Do not buy a special sensor, case, or repair tool on the assumption that one is required. Use Google Pixel support or an authorized repair channel to determine whether a broader touch or hardware fault needs service.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.
