Before starting any vitamin, herb, dietary supplement, extract, tea, powder, or product promoted as an unapproved cancer treatment, show it to your oncology team. Bring products you already use and products you are only considering. Your oncologist or oncology pharmacist can compare the exact ingredient, formulation, dose, timing, and your health history with the medicines in your regimen. Do not start, stop, or replace prescribed cancer treatment on your own.
Why an oncology review matters before you take anything new
“Natural” describes an origin, not a safety profile. A supplement can change how a cancer medicine is absorbed, metabolized, transported through the body, or removed. That can alter the amount of medicine reaching its target or change its effects. The same product may pose different issues with different cancer medicines, doses, treatment schedules, kidney or liver function, and other medicines.

The National Cancer Institute (NCI) discusses possible interactions involving St. John’s wort, grapefruit, and constituents of green tea. Those examples do not form a universal interaction list: evidence is limited for many product-and-drug combinations, and a general database cannot determine whether a particular product is safe with your regimen.
NCI’s patient guidance states: “Talk to your doctor about the CAM products you use before you begin treatment.” That includes a product you bought but have not started, a product recommended by a friend, and a product advertised as an alternative to treatment. In the United States, the NCI professional PDQ estimated that approximately 36% of adults with cancer used some form of complementary and alternative medicine in its 2024 update. Use is common; it is not proof that a product is effective or safe.

No food, vitamin, mineral, dietary supplement, herb, or combination has been proven to slow cancer, cure cancer, or prevent recurrence. Some products are studied for treatment side effects, but research interest is not proof of benefit or safety for an individual cancer regimen.
Prepare a complete product and medicine list
A useful appointment starts with precise product information. Ask a caregiver to help assemble it if fatigue, pain, or treatment appointments make paperwork difficult.
- Bring the container or a clear label photograph. Packaging can reveal serving size, extracts, proprietary blends, warnings, and inactive ingredients that a product name alone does not show.
- Write the full product name and every listed ingredient. Include botanical names where the label gives them.
- Record the amount and form. Note whether it is a capsule, tablet, extract, tea, powder, liquid, or another preparation, and the amount per serving.
- Record frequency and timing. State how often it is taken or would be taken and how close it would be to an infusion, oral cancer medicine, radiation session, surgery, or other treatment.
- Explain why you are considering it. The goal might be nausea, sleep, pain, energy, appetite, anxiety, or a claim that it treats the cancer. The reason affects what evidence and risks the team must assess.
- List everything else. Include prescription drugs, over-the-counter medicines, vitamins, herbs, teas, nutrition products, and supplements already stopped recently.
An optional medication-and-supplement notebook can keep this inventory in one place for appointments. It is an organizational aid, not a safety checker, and no notebook or app can substitute for a clinician’s review.

Questions to ask about interactions and treatment exposure
Could it change absorption, metabolism, transport, or removal?
Ask: “Could this product change how my cancer treatment is absorbed, metabolized, transported, or removed?” Ask the clinician to consider the exact product and formulation rather than only the broad ingredient name. A tea, concentrated extract, and standardized capsule may not represent the same exposure.

Also ask whether the product could affect any medicine taken for pain, nausea, infection, blood pressure, seizures, sleep, or another condition. NCI describes interaction mechanisms and examples, but it does not establish a single risk percentage for all supplements and cancer regimens. No reliable general statistic can tell you the likelihood for your individual combination.
What side effects or interactions should I watch for?
Use NCI’s practical wording: “What side effects can be expected?” and “What are the risks related to this therapy?” Ask which symptoms could be caused by the proposed product, which could signal a change in your cancer medicine’s effect, and whom to call if they occur. Ask whether blood tests, blood-pressure checks, liver or kidney monitoring, or another follow-up plan is needed; let the oncology team specify what applies to your regimen.
Should I avoid it, start it, pause it, or have monitoring?
Ask directly: “For my exact regimen, should I avoid this, start it, pause it, or use any monitoring if I take it?” This is a request for a patient-specific recommendation, not a universal rule. If the answer depends on a treatment date, dose change, surgery, or laboratory result, ask when the decision should be revisited and who will update the medication list.
Questions about benefits and evidence
What benefit is actually supported?
Ask: “What benefit is supported for the reason I want to take it, and what is still uncertain?” Separate evidence for a symptom from evidence for treating the cancer itself. A product studied for a side effect has not thereby been shown to shrink tumors, extend survival, or prevent recurrence.

Ask, “What benefits can be expected from this therapy?” and “Do the expected benefits outweigh the risks for me?” A clinician may conclude that evidence is insufficient, that a safer supportive-care option exists, or that the product should not be used with the current regimen.
Is it part of a legitimate clinical trial?
If someone says a product is “being studied,” ask: “Is this use part of a clinical trial? If so, who sponsors the trial, what is the study identifier, and what does participation involve?” Trial participation has defined eligibility, consent, dosing, monitoring, and reporting requirements. Taking a product sold online is not the same as enrolling in a regulated study.
Understand what kind of product you are being offered
In the United States, dietary supplements and drugs are regulated through different pathways. The distinction matters when a product makes a disease-treatment claim.

| Premarket review for the claimed use | NCI’s professional PDQ says supplements generally do not require the same premarket evaluation and approval as drugs, although manufacturing and labeling requirements apply. | FDA says legitimate drugs and devices intended to treat cancer must receive FDA approval or clearance before marketing and sale for that intended use. | FDA says an unapproved drug has not been reviewed for intended-use safety and effectiveness and may have quality or labeling shortcomings. |
| What the label establishes | Ingredient and labeling information, but not proof that the product treats cancer or is compatible with every regimen. | Evidence and labeling reviewed for a specified intended use; approval still does not establish suitability for every patient or every use. | Marketing language may exceed evidence, and the product’s identity, strength, purity, or directions may not be dependable. |
| Main treatment concern | Possible interactions, side effects, contamination or formulation differences, and delay of effective care. | Known benefits and risks are evaluated for the approved indication, while individual contraindications and interactions still require clinical review. | Direct harm, uncertain quality, interaction risk, and delay or interference with proven treatment. |
It is inaccurate to say that the FDA does not regulate supplements at all. The more precise point is that supplements generally do not undergo the same premarket approval process as drugs. A product marketed with claims that it treats a disease may be treated as an unapproved drug, creating a different regulatory problem.

Red flags in claims about cancer cures
Be especially skeptical when a product is presented as:
- a cure or guaranteed way to eliminate cancer;
- an alternative to surgery, chemotherapy, immunotherapy, radiation, or another approved treatment;
- free of side effects or safe for everyone;
- a universal remedy for every cancer type or stage;
- validated mainly by testimonials, influencer posts, marketplace availability, or social-media promotion.
FDA warns that illegally marketed cancer products can contain dangerous ingredients and may delay or interfere with beneficial treatment. Nicole Kornspan, an FDA consumer safety officer, wrote: “There can be a great temptation to jump at anything that appears to offer a chance for a cure.” That temptation is precisely why the exact product should be discussed with a licensed clinician before use.
FDA’s “Illegally Sold Cancer Treatments” overview reported 18 warning letters and four online advisory letters concerning more than 80 products claiming to prevent, diagnose, treat, mitigate, or cure cancer. That count was reported on the FDA page retrieved October 13, 2026, and can change as enforcement actions are added; it is not a measure of the safety of every supplement on the market.

- “Will the therapy affect conventional treatment?”
- “What side effects can be expected, and which ones require an urgent call?”
- “What are the risks related to this therapy?”
- “What benefits can be expected from this therapy?”
- “Is this therapy part of a clinical trial?”
- “If I use it, what should be documented in my medication list and communicated to my other clinicians?”
Do not interpret a clinician’s caution as permission to stop prescribed treatment. If you are considering a pause, replacement, dose change, or combination, ask the oncology team to make and document that decision.
Ask about evidence-based supportive care
If the goal is relief from a symptom, ask whether there is an evidence-based supportive-care option that fits your treatment. You can also ask, “Is an integrative oncology consultation available through this cancer center?” NCI notes that these consultations are available in a number of cancer-care settings, but not necessarily at every center. Ask about local availability, eligibility, scheduling, and insurance coverage rather than assuming access.
An integrative consultation should support informed discussion of supplements and complementary approaches alongside oncology care. It should not be used to replace treatment proven for your cancer.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minute2Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errors3Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitchesAfter the appointment: make the plan specific
Before leaving, confirm the decision in plain language. Write down whether the product should be avoided, whether a clinician-approved trial is reasonable, when it could be taken relative to treatment, what monitoring is required, and who will review new symptoms or laboratory results. Ask whether the plan changes before surgery, an infusion, a dose adjustment, or a change in cancer medicine.
Update your medication list whenever an ingredient, dose, brand, formulation, or schedule changes. Tell every clinician involved in your care about the product. If a label changes or you switch from a tea to an extract, bring the new label for another review; the products are not automatically equivalent.
Key decision: disclose first, decide together
The safest default is simple: disclose every supplement, herb, vitamin, and proposed unapproved drug before starting it, then ask the oncology team to evaluate the exact product against the exact regimen. Evidence, quality, interactions, and regulatory status vary, and neither a cure claim nor a general interaction list can answer the patient-specific question.
