Quartz vs. Granite Countertops: Cost, Durability, and Maintenance

Quartz is usually the simpler countertop to live with, while granite offers natural-stone variation and a slab-specific maintenance profile. Neither is automatically cheaper or more durable in every kitchen. Published installed-price ranges overlap, and the finished result depends on the exact slab, fabrication, cutouts, delivery, installation and local labor.

Choose between them by comparing like-for-like quotes and the care instructions for the product you will actually buy. Engineered quartz products are manufactured for more consistent color and pattern. Granite is quarried natural stone, so each slab can differ. For heat and stain decisions, follow the chosen brand’s written guidance rather than assuming every quartz or granite surface behaves identically.

Quartz and granite at a glance

Question Quartz Granite
What it is Engineered countertop surface made as a manufactured product. Quarried natural stone with slab-to-slab variation.
Visual consistency Generally more predictable from one slab or project to the next. Natural movement, veining and color variation are part of the material.
Published installed cost CAD $60–$120 per sq. ft. in a 2026 Caesarstone Canada comparison; USD $50–$120 in a 2026 BuildDecide editorial estimate. CAD $55–$130 per sq. ft. in the same Canadian comparison, with rare granite above CAD $200; USD $40–$100 in the BuildDecide estimate.
Routine care For Cosentino’s Silestone, water and mild soap are recommended; harsh chemicals and direct hot cookware should be avoided. Care depends on the slab, treatment and supplier instructions. There is no universal resealing interval supported for all granite.
Heat guidance Silestone guidance warns that sudden temperature changes can affect the surface and recommends trivets. Use the fabricator’s written guidance; do not assume a universal heat threshold.
Best fit People who value a coordinated appearance and straightforward daily cleaning. People who want natural variation and are willing to manage slab-specific care.

The United States International Trade Commission reported that quartz represented 39% of countertop material used in U.S. home kitchen renovations in 2025, compared with 29% for granite. That is a reported market share for a specific year, not a quality ranking or a prediction about your project.

What you are actually comparing

Engineered quartz products

Quartz countertop products are engineered surfaces manufactured to compete directly with natural-stone products such as granite. Manufacturing makes it possible to offer more repeatable colors and patterns, which can simplify planning when several pieces must appear coordinated. “Quartz” is a category, not one single formula or warranty. Care directions, approved cleaners and heat warnings can differ by brand and product line, so obtain the manual for the exact surface selected.

Quarried granite

Granite is natural stone extracted in blocks and cut into slabs. Mineral composition, veining, movement and background color can change from one slab to another, even when the commercial name is the same. Inspect the actual slab when possible, especially for an island or a layout that will expose multiple pieces. The slab’s finish, any factory treatment and the fabricator’s workmanship all affect maintenance expectations.

Cost: why neither material is always cheaper

Per-square-foot figures are useful for an initial budget, but they are not a complete project price. A countertop quote can include or exclude slab selection, the number of slabs, edge fabrication, sink and cooktop cutouts, delivery, installation, removal of an existing top and other site work. Compare the same scope before drawing a conclusion about value.

Published Canadian ranges

Caesarstone Canada’s 2026 comparison lists installed quartz at CAD $60–$120 per square foot and installed granite at CAD $55–$130 per square foot. It notes that rare granite can exceed CAD $200 per square foot. These are Canadian indicative ranges, not a universal price list or a guaranteed local quote. The overlap means a mid-tier quartz project can cost less than a high-tier granite project, and vice versa.

Published U.S. editorial estimates

A 2026 BuildDecide editorial comparison estimates installed quartz at USD $50–$120 per square foot and granite at USD $40–$100 per square foot. Treat these as editorial estimates rather than a government or trade-association price survey. Do not combine the Canadian and U.S. numbers: they use different currencies, markets and estimating methods.

How to request an apples-to-apples quote

  1. Measure the same countertop square footage for every bidder, including an island and any raised or separate sections.
  2. Specify the same material tier, color family and number of slabs. A named color may require a particular slab size or have more waste.
  3. List every edge profile and its linear footage. A simple eased edge and a more elaborate profile may not have the same fabrication charge.
  4. Count sink, faucet, cooktop, outlet and other cutouts explicitly. Ask whether templates, support rails or special finishing are included.
  5. State whether backsplash pieces, seams, delivery, installation, plumbing disconnection and removal of the old counter are included.
  6. Request separate lines for material, fabrication, delivery, installation, tax and disposal. Ask what could change after an on-site measure.

Current local bids should take precedence over broad published ranges. A quote that appears cheaper may simply omit a cutout, edge, seam, removal charge or installation step included by another fabricator.

What can make a “cheap” quote more expensive

Waste and slab count are easy to overlook. A pattern with a strong direction may require more careful layout or an additional slab, while an island may need a larger piece than the perimeter. Cutouts, polished edges, waterfall ends, backsplash work and difficult access can add fabrication or labor charges. Ask whether the price includes an on-site template and final measure, and whether the installer will return to reconnect plumbing. Comparing only the material line can hide the largest differences between bids.

Durability: compare the conditions, not absolute claims

Heat and thermal shock

Cosentino’s Silestone maintenance guidance says sudden temperature changes can affect the surface and recommends using trivets for hot items. Its wording is practical rather than a promise that a particular pan temperature is safe: “Therefore, in order to avoid damage when placing hot objects on the surface, it is highly recommended to use trivets.” Put a trivet or heat-resistant mat where cookware will land, and do not treat one product line’s instructions as a rule for every engineered quartz surface.

Granite also should be handled according to the selected slab and supplier’s written guidance. There is no category-wide independent heat threshold established here, so avoid claims that either material is indestructible or safe for direct contact with every hot pan. Thermal shock, an existing seam, inadequate support or an impact can change the outcome.

Stains and spills

Cosentino describes Silestone as stain resistant and says routine cleaning can be done with water and neutral soap. That is a manufacturer claim for a named product line. Granite performance varies with the slab and any treatment applied. A treated granite range such as Cosentino’s Sensa is marketed with a stain-repellent treatment and a 10-year material guarantee; those terms apply to that product range and should not be generalized to all granite.

Scratches, chips, cracks and seams

Both materials remain vulnerable to damage from the way a countertop is fabricated, supported and used. Heavy impact at an edge, movement in a cabinet, an awkwardly supported overhang or stress at a cutout can matter as much as the material category. Ask the fabricator where seams will fall, how an island overhang will be supported and what the written warranty excludes. Do not rely on a salesperson’s blanket statement that a surface cannot chip, crack or stain.

Warranties

Warranty length and coverage are product-specific. Read whether the document covers only the material or also fabrication and installation, and note exclusions for misuse, heat, chemical exposure, structural movement and commercial use. The Sensa 10-year material guarantee is an example of a product-specific term, not a standard granite warranty.

Maintenance in daily use

Quartz routine

For Silestone, Cosentino recommends regular cleaning with water and mild soap, avoiding harsh chemicals and keeping hot objects off the surface. Use a soft cloth, wipe spills instead of allowing residue to build up, and keep the manufacturer’s approved-cleaner list with your care documents. Other quartz brands may publish different restrictions, so check the exact product before using a degreaser, abrasive powder, solvent or disinfectant.

  • Use water and mild soap for the Silestone routine described by Cosentino.
  • Use trivets for hot cookware and avoid abrupt temperature changes.
  • Do not assume an oven cleaner, paint solvent or abrasive pad is approved.
  • Keep the product manual and warranty accessible for unusual stains or damage.

Granite routine

Granite does not have one universal maintenance schedule. Ask the fabricator or stone supplier whether the slab has an impregnating sealer, whether it was factory treated and how to evaluate its protection. The supplier should identify an appropriate cleaner and explain when, if ever, resealing is needed. A treated product such as Sensa may have its own stain claims and guarantee, while another slab may require a different plan.

  • Record the slab name, finish, treatment and installation date.
  • Follow the supplier’s written cleaning instructions rather than a generic resealing calendar.
  • Ask how to respond to an oil, wine, acidic food or hard-water mark before testing a product.
  • Use a trivet for hot cookware unless the supplier’s instructions clearly say otherwise.

Care that applies to either choice

Use cutting boards, lift abrasive objects instead of dragging them and keep standing water away from seams and cutouts. Cleaners that are safe for one surface may dull, discolor or damage another. If a spill leaves a mark, photograph it, note the product used and contact the fabricator before applying a stronger chemical.

Maintenance questions to settle before ordering

Ask for the exact product name, finish and care manual, not just the word “quartz” or “granite.” Confirm which cleaners are approved, whether a sealer is already present, how the supplier defines a stain and whether routine care affects warranty coverage. Ask how to report a defect and whether the installer or manufacturer handles a claim. These details matter more than a generic promise of “maintenance free.”

Appearance and design decisions

When consistency matters

Engineered quartz is a practical choice when you want the counter, island and backsplash to coordinate closely. Ask to see a full-size sample or slab because a small showroom sample may not reveal the scale of veining or the overall pattern. Confirm how seams will be oriented and whether the selected pattern is directional.

When variation is the point

Granite suits a design that treats each slab as individual natural material. View the actual slabs and mark the areas that should become the island, perimeter or backsplash. Discuss book-matching, vein direction and acceptable variation before fabrication; a natural pattern that looked subtle in a showroom can become dominant across a large island.

Installation details that affect performance and price

The countertop is a system, not just a slab. Cabinet level, support for overhangs, cutout placement, seam location and appliance clearances affect both appearance and service life. Before fabrication, confirm these points in writing:

  • What happens if the slab arrives with a defect or a cutout reveals a problem.
  • Who is responsible for plumbing, electrical appliance disconnection and reconnection.

Installation conditions can invalidate an otherwise reasonable material comparison. A less expensive surface installed over an unstable or poorly supported cabinet is not a bargain.

Decision framework: which one fits your kitchen?

Choose quartz when

  • You prefer a controlled, repeatable pattern across several countertop sections.
  • You want routine cleaning that, for the selected product, is based on mild soap and water.
  • You are prepared to use trivets and follow the brand’s heat and chemical restrictions.
  • You would rather evaluate a manufactured product warranty than manage natural-stone variation.

Choose granite when

  • You want a quarried stone whose movement and color variation are part of the design.
  • You are willing to inspect the actual slab and follow its treatment-specific care instructions.
  • A local fabricator can provide a slab and warranty that fit your budget and maintenance expectations.
  • You value a particular natural pattern enough to accept that another slab may not match it exactly.

Pause and get more information when

  • A quote gives only a per-square-foot number with no cutouts, edges or installation scope.
  • The seller cannot identify the exact product line, finish, treatment or written warranty.
  • You are being promised that the counter is completely heatproof, scratchproof or stainproof.
  • You cannot inspect the slab and the appearance of seams or pattern movement is important.

A practical buying checklist

  1. Measure the project and draw every sink, cooktop, faucet and outlet cutout.
  2. Collect at least two itemized local quotes using the same scope.
  3. Inspect the actual quartz pattern or granite slabs, not only a small sample.
  4. Obtain the exact care manual and warranty before paying a deposit.
  5. Confirm trivet and chemical restrictions for the chosen quartz product.
  6. Ask the granite supplier about sealer, treatment and how to test protection.
  7. Approve seam and overhang locations on the final drawing.
  8. Keep invoices, slab identifiers, care documents and installation photographs.

Bottom line

Quartz is the better fit for predictable appearance and straightforward routine care, provided you follow the chosen product’s heat and chemical guidance. Granite is the better fit when natural variation is a design priority and you are comfortable with slab-specific treatment and maintenance. Cost does not decide the question by itself: the published Canadian and U.S. ranges overlap, and your local, itemized quote is the evidence that matters for your kitchen.

Frequently Asked Questions

Is quartz or granite cheaper?

Neither is always cheaper. Caesarstone Canada’s 2026 figures show CAD $60–$120 per square foot installed for quartz and CAD $55–$130 for granite, while a 2026 BuildDecide estimate gives USD $50–$120 for quartz and USD $40–$100 for granite. Compare local quotes with identical slab, fabrication, cutout, delivery and installation scope.

Do granite countertops need to be sealed?

It depends on the slab, finish and treatment. Ask the fabricator or stone supplier whether an impregnating sealer is present and how to evaluate protection. The available evidence does not support one resealing interval for every granite countertop.

Can I put a hot pan on quartz?

Follow the exact product manual. Cosentino says sudden temperature changes can affect Silestone and highly recommends trivets for hot objects. Do not assume a different quartz brand has identical guidance or a guaranteed safe temperature.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Is granite stainproof?

No category-wide promise is appropriate. Some products, such as Cosentino’s Sensa range, are marketed with stain-repellent treatment and a 10-year material guarantee. Those claims apply to that product, not to all granite.

Which surface has a more consistent pattern?

Manufactured quartz generally provides more repeatable color and pattern. Granite is quarried natural stone, so movement, veining and background color can vary from slab to slab. Inspect the actual slab when appearance matters.

What should a countertop quote include?

Request separate prices for material, slab count, fabrication, edge profile, sink and cooktop cutouts, seams, delivery, installation, tax, removal and disposal. Confirm who performs final measuring, templates, plumbing disconnection and reconnection.

Are quartz and granite indestructible?

No. Heat exposure, thermal shock, impact, seams, cabinet movement, inadequate overhang support and chemical misuse can cause problems. Read the product warranty and avoid claims that either surface is completely heatproof, scratchproof or stainproof.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

What is the easiest daily care routine?

For Silestone, Cosentino recommends water and mild soap, avoiding harsh chemicals and direct hot objects. Granite care varies, so use the supplier’s written cleaner and treatment instructions rather than applying a generic routine.

The Bottom Line

Quartz favors predictable design and simple routine care; granite favors natural variation and a slab-specific maintenance plan. Because published prices overlap, choose from itemized local bids and the written instructions for the exact product you will install.
