Quantum Hall Effect vs. Classical Hall Effect: Key Differences Explained

The classical Hall effect is a continuous, magnetic-field-driven Hall voltage caused by charge carriers being deflected to one side of a conductor. The quantum Hall effect (QHE) occurs in a sufficiently two-dimensional electron system exposed to a strong magnetic field and low enough temperature for discrete Landau levels to form. Instead of changing smoothly, the Hall resistance locks onto precise plateaus, while the longitudinal resistivity approaches zero.

Both effects place a voltage transverse to the applied current, but they describe different physical regimes and serve different purposes. The classical effect is a practical way to probe carrier density and material properties; the quantum effect provides an exceptionally reproducible resistance value and underpins the practical resistance standard.

The difference at a glance

Feature Classical Hall effect Quantum Hall effect
Physical system A conducting sample; it does not have to be two-dimensional A sufficiently two-dimensional electron system
Required field A magnetic field that deflects moving carriers A large magnetic field perpendicular to the electron system
Temperature requirement No special cryogenic requirement for the basic effect Low enough temperature to resolve quantized energy levels; the requirement depends on the device platform
Main mechanism Lorentz-force deflection and charge accumulation on opposite sides of the sample Landau-level quantization and the formation of robust resistance plateaus
Hall response Normally changes continuously with field and carrier properties Stays at discrete plateaus over suitable ranges of field or carrier density
Longitudinal response Generally finite; it is not inherently zero Becomes very small and approaches zero on well-developed plateaus
Typical use Hall sensors and semiconductor or material characterization Precision resistance metrology and tests of quantum transport

The word Hall refers to the transverse voltage in both cases. The word quantum refers to the additional requirement that the allowed carrier energies become discrete and produce a quantized macroscopic resistance.

How the classical Hall effect works

The measurement geometry

A conventional Hall measurement sends current through a sample while a magnetic field is applied across it, usually perpendicular to the current direction. Two contacts on the sides of the sample measure the voltage that develops transverse to the current. This side-to-side voltage is the Hall voltage.

Why a transverse voltage appears

Charge carriers moving through the magnetic field experience a sideways magnetic force. Electrons and holes are deflected toward opposite sides according to their charge sign and direction of motion. The resulting imbalance leaves one side more positively charged and the other more negatively charged. That separation creates a transverse electric field and a measurable Hall voltage.

At the scale of an ordinary device, this is a classical balance: magnetic deflection pushes carriers sideways, while the electric field produced by charge accumulation pushes back. The voltage is not a second current flowing across the sample; it is the potential difference created across the sample’s width.

What determines the measured value

The Hall signal depends on the carrier density, applied magnetic field, and the particular sample or material context. Changing the carrier concentration changes how much charge must accumulate to balance the magnetic deflection. Reversing the magnetic field reverses the transverse voltage, and the sign of the signal can indicate whether electrons or holes dominate.

Because the response generally varies continuously rather than locking to fixed values, classical Hall measurements are useful for characterizing semiconductors and other materials. The National Institute of Standards and Technology (NIST) describes Hall measurements as a method for semiconductor characterization as well as a way to observe the transverse voltage itself.

What the classical effect does not require

The sample need not be a two-dimensional electron gas. A thin film, bulk semiconductor, or other conducting specimen can show an ordinary Hall response. The basic effect also does not require the extremely strong fields and cryogenic temperatures used to resolve a conventional quantum Hall plateau.

How the quantum Hall effect works

A two-dimensional electron system is essential

The conventional QHE is observed in a conducting system whose carriers are confined to a plane, or to a layer thin enough to behave as two-dimensional. A magnetic field must point perpendicular to that plane. This geometry changes the allowed orbital motion of the carriers in a way that is not captured by the ordinary, continuous Hall picture.

Landau levels replace a continuous energy range

In the strong-field regime, the carrier motion is organized into discrete energy levels called Landau levels. As the magnetic field or carrier density changes, the number of occupied levels changes. When the Fermi energy lies in an appropriate gap between levels, the measured transport becomes unusually robust against small changes in the experimental conditions.

The Hall resistance is conventionally written Rxy, the transverse voltage divided by the applied current. In QHE measurements, Rxy can remain nearly constant across a range of magnetic field or carrier density. Each constant region is a Hall-resistance plateau.

Why the longitudinal resistance collapses on a plateau

On a well-developed plateau, the longitudinal resistivity becomes very small and approaches zero in the ideal description. This is the crucial companion observation: the system carries current along the device without the ordinary dissipative voltage drop expected from a finite longitudinal resistance, while the transverse resistance remains fixed at its quantized value.

A smooth Hall curve with a nonzero longitudinal response is therefore not, by itself, evidence of the quantum Hall regime. Researchers look for both the discrete transverse plateaus and the suppressed longitudinal resistivity.

RK = h/e2.

The integer in the formula is not a rounded label assigned after the measurement. It represents how the quantized energy structure is filled. Different integer filling factors correspond to different plateaus, each tied to the same fundamental constants.

Integer and fractional quantum Hall effects are not the same

The integer effect is the regime described by the relation with an integer ν and is the form used for the practical resistance standard. Fractional quantum Hall states occur in a separate, more interaction-driven regime. They should not be treated as unusually precise versions of the classical Hall effect or as interchangeable with the integer QHE.

The distinction matters experimentally. Integer quantization is commonly introduced through single-particle Landau-level filling, whereas fractional states reflect stronger many-body effects among the carriers. A statement that a device shows a “quantum Hall effect” should therefore specify whether it means an integer or fractional state when that distinction affects the physics being discussed.

What a side-by-side experiment would show

Classical Hall measurement

  1. Choose a conducting sample and attach contacts for current and transverse-voltage measurement.
  2. Drive a known current through the sample.
  3. Apply a magnetic field across the sample and record the side-to-side voltage.
  4. Vary the field or compare materials and carrier densities. The Hall response normally changes continuously.
  5. Use the transverse signal, its sign, and its dependence on field and carrier density to characterize the material.

Quantum Hall measurement

  1. Use a sufficiently two-dimensional electron system with a field perpendicular to its plane.
  2. Cool the device enough that the relevant quantized levels are resolved.
  3. Apply a large magnetic field and pass a carefully controlled current.
  4. Measure both the transverse voltage, used to calculate Rxy, and the voltage along the current direction, used to determine the longitudinal resistivity.
  5. Sweep magnetic field or carrier density and identify regions where Rxy is fixed while the longitudinal response becomes very small.

The second procedure is not simply a more sensitive version of the first. It requires a different physical system and operating regime, and the plateau is a property of the quantized spectrum rather than just a large classical Hall voltage.

Conditions, accuracy and practical limits

Strong perpendicular magnetic field

The field must be large enough to separate the relevant Landau levels in the two-dimensional system. Its direction matters: the conventional geometry uses a field perpendicular to the plane of the carriers. A tilted or weak field can fail to produce well-resolved quantization even when a transverse voltage is present.

Low temperature, with no single universal threshold

Thermal energy broadens the occupied states. If that broadening mixes neighboring levels, plateaus become less distinct. The required temperature depends on the material, disorder, device design and field. NIST reported that conventional GaAs devices in the implementation it described required temperatures of 1.2 K or below. That figure is a condition for that GaAs-type resistance-standard implementation, reported in 2017, not a universal operating limit for every present or emerging platform.

Metrological reproducibility

NIST has reported that quantized resistance values can be measured to about one part per billion. This reproducibility is why the QHE is used as the basis of the practical resistance standard. The figure describes the precision achieved in the cited metrology context; it should not be read as the accuracy of every laboratory demonstration or every material system.

Contact quality and device uniformity

Even when the underlying spectrum is quantized, poor contacts, inhomogeneous carrier density, leakage paths or excessive heating can obscure the plateau. A credible measurement therefore checks the longitudinal signal and the stability of the value over a field or density interval instead of relying on a single voltage reading.

Why the classical effect remains useful

Most Hall sensors and routine laboratory measurements use the classical effect because it works in ordinary conducting structures and gives a direct, continuous signal. Engineers can monitor magnetic field, determine the sign of dominant carriers, and compare carrier densities without building a cryogenic, high-field two-dimensional device.

The classical response is also easier to integrate into practical electronics. Its value is diagnostic: the measured Hall voltage changes when the field, current, geometry or carrier population changes. That variability is useful for sensing and characterization, even though it cannot provide the fixed resistance values required for a primary metrology standard.

Why the quantum effect matters for resistance standards

A classical Hall voltage depends on sample-specific quantities such as carrier density and geometry. A QHE plateau instead follows a relation built from fundamental constants and an integer filling factor. Once a well-developed plateau is reached, the resistance is remarkably insensitive to many microscopic details, provided the device remains in the correct regime.

This combination of a fixed transverse resistance and an almost vanishing longitudinal resistivity gives metrologists a reproducible reference. It also lets experiments test whether a material and device preserve the expected relation RH = h/(νe2).

Common points of confusion

“Any Hall voltage is a quantum Hall effect.”

No. A transverse voltage is the defining observation of the Hall family, but the ordinary effect already produces one through magnetic deflection and charge separation. Quantization requires the additional two-dimensional, strong-field and low-temperature conditions, plus plateau behavior.

“Quantum” means the Hall voltage is always larger.

Magnitude alone does not identify the regime. The diagnostic feature is that the Hall resistance takes discrete values over finite ranges of field or carrier density and follows the quantized relation. A large but smoothly varying Hall voltage can still be entirely classical.

“Zero longitudinal resistance means no voltage is measured anywhere.”

The statement concerns the longitudinal resistivity along the current direction on a well-developed plateau. The transverse voltage remains measurable and is precisely what defines the quantized Hall resistance.

“The 1.2 K value applies to every quantum Hall device.”

It does not. It is the temperature reported by NIST for a described conventional GaAs implementation. Different materials and device architectures can have different requirements, so the field, temperature and platform must be named when quoting operating conditions.

“Integer and fractional states are interchangeable.”

They are distinct regimes. The integer effect supplies the standard relation with integer ν; fractional states arise from stronger carrier interactions and require separate interpretation.

How to identify the regime from data

  • Only a transverse signal, changing smoothly with field: consistent with an ordinary classical Hall measurement.
  • Transverse plateaus but a substantial longitudinal voltage: the plateau may be poorly developed, or the device may have heating, contact or uniformity problems.
  • Transverse plateaus with longitudinal resistivity near zero: evidence for a well-developed quantum Hall state, provided the device is a two-dimensional system in the required field and temperature range.
  • Plateau values that do not fit the integer relation: check the filling-factor assignment, calibration, field orientation, carrier density and whether a fractional state or an extrinsic measurement error is involved.

Bottom line

The classical Hall effect is a continuous transport response: a magnetic field bends moving carriers, charge accumulates at the sides, and a transverse Hall voltage appears. The quantum Hall effect is a distinct two-dimensional, strong-field and low-temperature regime in which Landau-level quantization produces discrete Hall-resistance plateaus and an almost vanishing longitudinal resistivity. The classical effect is therefore mainly a tool for sensing and material characterization, while the quantum effect supplies a fundamental, highly reproducible resistance reference.
