You usually do not need a PhD to start in quantum-computing hardware. A bachelor’s degree in physics, electrical, mechanical, materials, computer or photonics engineering is a common foundation for entry-level engineering and technician work. The Chicago Quantum Exchange’s 2024 analysis of more than 5,000 job postings found that more than half of quantum-technology jobs did not require a graduate degree; in private companies and nonprofits, two-thirds were open to candidates without one. PhDs become more important for highly specialized device physics, cryogenic research and independent research-and-development roles.
The strongest candidates combine an adjacent engineering discipline with practical evidence: instruments they have used, devices or circuits they have measured, code that analyzes real data, and a clear record of how they debugged failures. That combination can lead from a cleanroom, photonics, RF, vacuum, semiconductor or test role into a quantum-hardware team.

What counts as a quantum-hardware career?
“Quantum hardware” is an umbrella for the physical systems that create, control, measure and protect quantum states. The work differs substantially by platform and by where you sit in the production chain.
- Device and process engineering: design, fabricate and characterize chips, resonators, sensors or other quantum devices.
- Cryogenic engineering and testing: build low-temperature systems, detectors, wiring and measurement methods, then diagnose performance problems.
- RF, microwave and control electronics: generate, route and measure the signals that operate a device.
- Photonics and laser systems: develop optical sources, components, alignment, detectors and packaging.
- Vacuum, facilities and laboratory operations: maintain pumps, chambers, utilities, safety systems and experimental infrastructure.
- Modeling, automation and data: simulate devices, run experiments, acquire data and quantify uncertainty.
A job title may never contain the word “quantum.” Semiconductor process engineer, RF engineer, photonics technician, cryogenic test engineer, vacuum technician and laboratory facilities technician can all be direct routes into quantum-device work.

What the job-posting evidence says
The Chicago Quantum Exchange’s 2024 study examined more than 5,000 quantum-technology postings. More than half did not require a graduate degree, and two-thirds of postings from private companies and nonprofits were open to people without one. Those are sector-wide findings, not a promise that every hardware laboratory hires at bachelor’s level.
An IEEE study, Assessing the Needs of the Quantum Industry, surveyed 57 companies and found that many hardware, software and business roles rely on broadly useful technical skills rather than a quantum-specific credential. Respondents sought candidates with bachelor’s, master’s and doctoral degrees outside the most specialized jobs.
When graduate school matters more
A master’s or PhD is a stronger requirement when the work centers on device physics, advanced materials, original cryogenic research, or publishing and directing independent experiments. The 2025 Rochester Institute of Technology role profiles describe a cryogenics specialist who develops cryogenic test systems and needs cryogenics, detector and sensing knowledge, statistics, programming, debugging and experimental troubleshooting; the profiled education level is an engineering or physics PhD. That profile lists no prior experience requirement, illustrating that a research role can prioritize advanced study while still accepting early-career applicants.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problems2Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minute3Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errorsDo not treat the doctorate statistic as a shortcut. A bachelor’s applicant still needs evidence that they can work safely around equipment, collect trustworthy measurements and solve problems when an experiment does not behave as expected.
Degrees that create the most options
Physics
Physics gives you electromagnetism, quantum mechanics, thermodynamics, statistical methods and experimental measurement. Add electronics, programming and fabrication experience so that the degree translates into engineering work rather than remaining purely theoretical.

Recommended Free Tools
Software and data practice
- Python or another scientific programming language for instrument control, analysis and visualization.
- Version control and reproducible environments so another engineer can rerun your work.
- Numerical modeling, curve fitting, uncertainty analysis and clear plots.
- Data-acquisition concepts, calibration records and automated test routines.
Professional behaviors
Quantum experiments often fail for mundane reasons before they fail for quantum reasons. Critical thinking, careful documentation, communication, collaboration, adaptability and project management are therefore technical advantages. Keep a dated lab notebook, record configuration changes and write concise handoffs that let a teammate reproduce a result.
Realistic entry-level routes
Route 1: Bachelor’s degree plus adjacent engineering
Study physics or an engineering discipline, then target semiconductor, RF, photonics, instrumentation, vacuum or cryogenic employers. Build quantum literacy through coursework, seminars and projects, but do not wait for a job whose title includes “quantum.” This route keeps your options open if a quantum venture changes platform or hiring slows.
Route 2: Technician and fabrication work
Technician-in-training, photonics technician, cleanroom, process, test and facilities roles provide the practical foundation that device teams need. Montana State’s 2024 report lists technician-in-training and photonics-technician openings alongside engineering roles. Colorado’s workforce report likewise describes cleanroom specialists and lab or construction technicians who build and maintain fabrication and test facilities.
In these jobs, learn process control, equipment maintenance, safety documentation and yield or failure analysis. A technician who can also script measurements and explain trends in the data becomes a strong candidate for process or test engineering.

Route 3: Internships and testbeds
National-laboratory and university testbeds can provide access to equipment that is difficult to obtain independently. Berkeley Lab describes Advanced Quantum Testbed internships and projects that prepare students and early-career researchers for quantum-device design and fabrication and for cryogenic engineering. University cleanroom courses, research assistantships and capstone laboratories can provide comparable evidence when a formal internship is unavailable.
Route 4: Graduate specialization
Choose a master’s or PhD when the work you want requires deeper device physics, cryogenic research, advanced materials or independent experimental design. Select an adviser and laboratory for the equipment and methods you will use, not only for the label of the program. Graduate study should produce demonstrable work—fabricated structures, calibrated measurements, a control system or a reproducible model—not just additional coursework.
Route 5: Transfer from another hardware industry
Experience in semiconductor manufacturing, aerospace instrumentation, medical devices, telecom RF, optical networking, vacuum systems or industrial controls can transfer directly. Translate your résumé into the language of the target team: process capability, measurement repeatability, failure analysis, thermal budget, noise performance, uptime or automated test coverage.
How to build a portfolio that proves readiness
A portfolio should show an engineering result and the decisions behind it. Choose one project you can document thoroughly rather than a collection of unfinished demonstrations.
- Pick a physical problem. Examples include characterizing a resonator, automating a temperature sweep, building an RF control chain, aligning a laser or modeling noise in a sensor.
- Define a measurable outcome. State the frequency range, temperature stability, measurement uncertainty, repeatability, noise level or other metric you will evaluate. Do not claim a benchmark you did not measure.
- Document the setup. Include a block diagram, instrument models, wiring or optical layout, safety controls and software versions.
- Show the data path. Publish scripts, calibration procedures, plots and a short explanation of how you handled outliers or failed runs.
- Explain debugging. Record the symptom, hypotheses, tests and corrective action. Hiring teams learn more from a controlled diagnosis than from a perfect first attempt.
- Connect the project to a job family. A cryogenic measurement maps to test engineering; a lithography process to fabrication; an FPGA or RF build to controls; and a reproducible simulation to modeling.
How to compare hardware roles before applying
| Role family | Typical first evidence | Graduate degree pressure | Transferable industries |
|---|---|---|---|
| Cleanroom or process technician | Safety, lithography or process exposure, inspection and equipment logs | Usually lower for technician entry; exact requirement varies by employer | Semiconductor and microfabrication |
| Photonics technician or engineer | Laser safety, optical alignment, detectors, fiber and measurement | Bachelor’s commonly fits industry openings; advanced research may prefer graduate study | Optical communications, sensing and imaging |
| RF, microwave or controls engineer | Circuit analysis, instrumentation, signal integrity, automation and coding | Bachelor’s is a common entry point; specialized research can favor a master’s or PhD | Telecommunications, aerospace and test equipment |
| Cryogenic test engineer | Low-temperature systems, sensors, statistics, programming and troubleshooting | Some research profiles specify an engineering or physics PhD; technician and engineering routes also exist | Detectors, scientific instruments and refrigeration |
| Device-physics researcher | Advanced materials or device modeling, fabrication and independent experiments | Master’s or PhD is more likely to be expected | Semiconductor and academic R&D |
| Facilities or laboratory technician | Vacuum, utilities, maintenance, construction coordination and safety | Requirement depends on scope; the Colorado report identifies technician pathways | Research infrastructure, manufacturing and industrial laboratories |
Also compare the physical platform—superconducting, trapped-ion, photonic, neutral-atom or enabling hardware—the balance of fabrication versus modeling and test, access to cleanrooms and laboratories, possible security or geographic restrictions, and how easily the skills transfer outside quantum computing.

Programs and partnerships worth investigating
Georgia Tech describes undergraduate and graduate quantum pathways spanning materials, devices, sensing, communications, computing, software, systems engineering and technology transition. Such breadth can help you combine a major with a laboratory specialization instead of pursuing a narrowly titled credential.
For any internship, certificate or affiliate program, verify current eligibility, location, dates, equipment access and application requirements directly with the provider. Availability and terms change, and a program name alone does not guarantee hands-on hardware time.
A practical application checklist
- Choose a target hardware family and list its required instruments, materials and software.
- Map each requirement to a course, laboratory, internship, technician task or portfolio project.
- Rewrite your résumé bullets around measured outcomes and troubleshooting decisions.
- Prepare a one-page project brief with setup, data, result and limitations.
- Apply to adjacent semiconductor, photonics, RF, vacuum, cryogenic and instrumentation roles as well as quantum-branded positions.
- Ask interviewers about platform, laboratory access, training, safety responsibilities and how performance is measured.
What to expect from the market
There is no single entry-level quantum-hardware job and no reliable universal salary or placement figure in the available evidence. Hiring needs vary by platform, funding, geography, export-control or security rules, and whether a company is building devices, test systems or enabling equipment. The durable strategy is to become excellent at a hardware discipline that quantum teams use, then add enough quantum context to communicate with device scientists and software teams.
As Infleqtion co-founder and chief technology officer Dana Anderson put it: “You do not need to be a quantum anything to work in a quantum company, whether you have a PhD or a high school degree.” Read that as a statement about the breadth of roles—not as a guarantee that every hardware R&D position accepts every education level. Your demonstrated ability to build, measure, document and improve a system remains the deciding evidence.
Frequently Asked Questions
Can someone with only a high-school diploma work in quantum hardware?
Yes, some laboratory, facilities, assembly and technician pathways can begin without a college degree, but requirements vary. Safety training, equipment experience, technical certificates and a documented portfolio can improve access; research-engineering roles generally require more formal STEM education.
Which quantum platform should a student choose?
Choose the platform that matches the equipment and mentorship you can access. Compare superconducting, trapped-ion, photonic and neutral-atom work by the balance of fabrication, optics, RF, cryogenics, software and cleanroom exposure, then favor skills that transfer across industries.
How can I gain cleanroom or cryogenic experience without a full graduate program?
Look for university cleanroom courses, research assistantships, national-laboratory internships, technician-in-training jobs and testbed projects. Ask specifically what equipment, supervision and documented practical work participants receive.
