Qualcomm says Arm failed to meet contractual obligations and harmed its business; it is seeking relief that could let it avoid up to five years of royalties. Reuters described those royalties as potentially worth billions, but that is a contingent claim—not a damages award, a precise estimate, or an amount Arm has accepted.
What the new trial is about
This is Qualcomm’s case against Arm Holdings, not the earlier lawsuit Arm brought over Nuvia. Qualcomm filed its Delaware action in April 2024. It alleges that Arm failed to provide deliverables required under Qualcomm’s Architecture License Agreement (ALA), improperly sought to terminate that license, and publicized its termination effort in a way that damaged Qualcomm’s business discussions. Qualcomm also alleges that Arm did not offer Technology License Agreement (TLA) terms at commercially reasonable prices and terms, and later added a claim concerning good-faith negotiations. Arm denies Qualcomm’s assertions and says it will defend the case. Reuters’ October 5, 2026 report describes the trial and allegations; Qualcomm and Arm also outline their positions in their SEC filings and SEC filings.

Reuters reported that the dispute includes Qualcomm’s allegation that Arm withheld chip-testing tools required by contract. Qualcomm also says Arm’s public disclosure of its 2024 termination threat harmed Qualcomm’s discussions for a chip deal with Meta. These are Qualcomm’s allegations, not findings that the court has made.

Why “potentially worth billions” is not a damages figure
Qualcomm is seeking to stop paying royalties for as long as five years. Reuters reported that the royalties at issue could be worth billions, while noting that Judge Maryellen Noreika was considering whether the relevant contract term could be enforced. If that theory is unavailable, Qualcomm could pursue a smaller damages amount. The sources do not establish a final ruling on the royalty theory or any award.

Qualcomm’s Form 10-Q for the quarter ended June 28, 2026, said it had recorded no loss accrual because a loss was reasonably possible but not probable. It also said a possible loss amount or range could not then be reasonably estimated. That is Qualcomm’s accounting disclosure about the litigation, not a court finding, a quantified estimate of Arm’s liability, or evidence that Qualcomm will prevail.
How this differs from Arm’s earlier Nuvia case
Arm’s earlier action and Qualcomm’s new case concern different alleged conduct and agreements. In 2022, Arm sued Qualcomm, Qualcomm Technologies, and Nuvia over alleged breaches of Nuvia’s license after Qualcomm acquired Nuvia. The December 2024 jury found that Qualcomm had not breached the Nuvia ALA and that Qualcomm CPUs incorporating Nuvia designs were licensed under Qualcomm’s ALA. Jurors could not agree on whether Nuvia had breached its agreement.
