There is no established immediate effect on phones already for sale, and the live case has not established a change to future phone prices or availability. Qualcomm and Arm are now fighting over a separate licensing agreement after a 2025 judgment favored Qualcomm in Arm’s earlier case over Qualcomm’s acquisition of chip designer Nuvia. The new dispute could matter to future chip licensing, but its consequences for buyers remain uncertain.
What the current lawsuit is about
Qualcomm filed its separate case against Arm in the U.S. District Court for the District of Delaware on April 18, 2024. Qualcomm says Arm failed to provide deliverables required under their Architecture License Agreement (ALA), including tools Qualcomm says it needed to test chips. The complaint was later amended to add allegations involving other license terms, a termination threat, and interference with customer relationships. These are Qualcomm’s allegations, not court findings.

Arm licenses CPU architecture and related technology to companies that design their own processors. Qualcomm’s position is that it met its obligations under its license while Arm did not meet certain obligations of its own. Arm has characterized the new lawsuit as leverage in a business dispute and contested whether Qualcomm can prove damages, according to an October 6, 2026 report by Android Central.
What Qualcomm is asking for
Qualcomm seeks to halt royalty payments for up to five years, according to that October 6 report. This is requested relief, not a court award or an established payment holiday. The five-day jury trial was reported underway on October 6; no verdict is established in the sources available for this article.

How this differs from the earlier Nuvia case
The current case is not a continuation of the earlier case, even though both concern licensing between the companies. The first dispute was initiated by Arm and focused on Qualcomm’s 2021 acquisition of Nuvia, which had its own Arm architecture license. The central question was whether technology developed under Nuvia’s license could be used under Qualcomm’s separate license.
| Case | Who sued whom | Main dispute | Latest established stage |
|---|---|---|---|
| Arm’s Nuvia case | Arm sued Qualcomm and Nuvia | Whether Nuvia-licensed technology could be used under Qualcomm’s license after the acquisition | Final judgment for Qualcomm and Nuvia entered September 30, 2025; Arm appealed on October 1, 2025 |
| Qualcomm’s separate case | Qualcomm sued Arm | Alleged failures to provide ALA deliverables and related contract and customer-interference claims | Five-day jury trial reported underway October 6, 2026; no verdict established in the sources available here |
In December 2024, the jury found Qualcomm had not breached the Nuvia agreement and that certain Qualcomm CPUs were covered by Qualcomm’s license. It did not reach a verdict on one claim about Nuvia. On September 30, 2025, the court entered final judgment for Qualcomm and Nuvia, including judgment for Nuvia on the outstanding claim, and rejected Arm’s request for a new trial. Arm appealed to the U.S. Court of Appeals for the Third Circuit the next day; Arm described that appeal as pending in its fiscal 2026 filing. Qualcomm called the result a “full victory” in its September 30, 2025 statement. That judgment belongs to the Nuvia case, not the current Qualcomm-initiated case.

Why the dispute could matter to phone buyers—and what is not established
The potential consumer connection is indirect. Licensing terms can shape how chip companies negotiate access to technology and support future processor development. If the current case changes those negotiations or the parties’ business relationship, it could have downstream relevance to future chips. The available reporting does not establish that it has already disrupted chip supply or that it will change the price or availability of a particular phone.

Arm reported that Qualcomm accounted for 9% of Arm Holdings plc’s total revenue in fiscal 2026, the year ended March 31, 2026, in its Form 20-F. That is a dated measure of revenue concentration, not an estimate of what Arm would lose if Qualcomm prevailed in the current case. It does, however, show why the dispute involves a significant commercial relationship.

The disputed Meta deal claim
Qualcomm says a leak relating to its license affected a potential Meta chip deal and alleges the eventual deal was worth $170 million less. Arm disputes that causal explanation and says the economics changed as Meta shifted its product focus, according to the October 6 report. The $170 million figure is Qualcomm’s allegation, not an established damages award or a court finding.
