QQQM Alternatives: The Best Low-Cost Nasdaq-100 and Broad-Market ETFs

The best QQQM alternative depends on whether you want the same Nasdaq-100 index or simply a cheaper, broader U.S. stock fund. QNDX is the lowest-fee directly documented Nasdaq-100 option at a 0.10% gross/net expense ratio, while QQQM charges 0.15% and QQQ charges 0.18%. VTI and VOO each charge 0.03%, but neither is an exact Nasdaq-100 substitute: VTI covers approximately 100% of the investable U.S. stock market, and VOO provides large-cap U.S. exposure.

That makes the decision less about finding one universally “best” ETF and more about matching the fund’s index, trading characteristics and portfolio role to your objective. A long-term investor seeking a Nasdaq-100 growth tilt may compare QNDX with QQQM; an active trader may value QQQ’s established trading history; a broad-market investor may be better served by VTI or VOO.

QQQM alternatives at a glance

These funds fall into two different groups. QQQM, QNDX and QQQ are Nasdaq-100 funds. VTI and VOO are broader U.S. equity funds that can replace the role of a concentrated growth ETF in a portfolio, but they do not deliver the same index exposure.

ETF Index or objective Expense ratio Best fit Important qualification
QNDX Nasdaq-100 Index; large-capitalization non-financial companies listed on a U.S. exchange 0.10% gross/net (State Street Investment Management, 2026) Buy-and-hold investors seeking direct Nasdaq-100 exposure at the lowest documented fee Launched June 23, 2026, so its live operating and trading record is short
QQQM Nasdaq-100 Index 0.15% total expense ratio (Invesco, 2026) Long-term Nasdaq-100 exposure Direct index match; compare current spreads and trading activity before buying
QQQ Nasdaq-100 Index 0.18% after a December 2025 reclassification (Invesco, 2025) Investors who place a premium on an established trading implementation Costs more than QQQM and QNDX on the documented figures
VTI Morningstar US Total Market Index 0.03% (Vanguard, 2026) Broad U.S. stock-market core Represents approximately 100% of the investable U.S. stock market; not a Nasdaq-100 fund
VOO Vanguard large-capitalization-stock benchmark 0.03% (Vanguard, 2026) Large-cap U.S. stock-market core Broader and differently constructed exposure than the Nasdaq-100

Expense ratios are fund-level operating costs deducted from assets rather than a separate bill. They can change, so confirm the current prospectus and fund page when you place an order. On a purely arithmetic basis, a $10,000 holding would have approximately $10 in annual expenses at 0.10%, $15 at 0.15%, $18 at 0.18% and $3 at 0.03%, before changes in the balance, investment returns, taxes or trading costs.

What makes an ETF a true QQQM alternative?

Same index: QNDX and QQQ

Invesco describes QQQM as based on the Nasdaq-100 Index. QQQ also provides Nasdaq-100 access, and Invesco reported a 0.18% expense ratio after its December 2025 reclassification. State Street’s QNDX materials describe an objective to track the Nasdaq-100 Index; its SEC summary prospectus specifies large-capitalization equity securities of non-financial companies listed on a U.S. exchange.

Because these three funds target the same index family, their portfolios should have broadly similar drivers: the performance of large, non-financial companies listed on Nasdaq. “Similar,” however, does not mean identical day to day. Fees, portfolio implementation, cash management, rebalancing, securities lending, trading spreads and tracking difference can cause returns to diverge.

Different index: VTI and VOO

VTI seeks the Morningstar US Total Market Index, which Vanguard says represents approximately 100% of the investable U.S. stock market. That means exposure across large-, mid-, small- and micro-cap U.S. companies rather than a concentrated group of large non-financial Nasdaq-listed companies.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

VOO tracks a Vanguard large-capitalization-stock benchmark. It is a large-cap core fund, not a Nasdaq-100 fund. It may overlap with many companies held by QQQM or QNDX, but the index rules, sector mix and holdings are not the same. Choose VTI or VOO when the objective is broad or large-cap U.S. exposure, not when exact Nasdaq-100 replication is the requirement.

QNDX: the lowest documented Nasdaq-100 fee, with a short live record

QNDX is the direct competitor most likely to attract fee-sensitive QQQM investors. State Street Investment Management’s 2026 key-information sheet reports a 0.10% gross/net expense ratio and a June 23, 2026 launch date. Among the directly documented Nasdaq-100 funds in this comparison, that is the lowest stated fee.

The fee saving is real but modest in dollar terms. At a constant $10,000 balance, 0.10% is approximately $10 a year versus approximately $15 for QQQM, a difference of about $5 before performance and trading effects. The difference becomes more material as assets and holding periods grow, but it still should not be evaluated in isolation.

What the June 2026 launch changes

A newly launched ETF has less public operating history than an established fund. You cannot infer its long-run tracking difference, typical bid-ask spread, assets, trading volume or options market from the expense ratio alone. Those details may improve as the fund gathers assets, but they must be checked rather than assumed.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.
  • Bid-ask spread: Compare the current spread during the hours you expect to trade. A low expense ratio can be offset by repeatedly crossing a wide spread.
  • Volume and assets: Review current trading volume and assets under management. These figures change and were not established in the cited materials.
  • Tracking difference: Compare the fund’s total return with the index after fees over available periods. A short history limits what can be concluded.
  • Order execution: Consider limit orders instead of automatically accepting an unfavorable market price, particularly when the market or ETF is moving quickly.
  • Options availability: If you use options, verify that a suitable chain exists. Availability should not be presumed for a newly launched fund.

QQQM: the straightforward long-term Nasdaq-100 choice

Invesco’s official 2026 fund information states that the Invesco NASDAQ 100 ETF is based on the NASDAQ-100 Index and reports a 0.15% total expense ratio. QQQM therefore gives a direct Nasdaq-100 alternative without moving to a broader-market index.

For a buy-and-hold investor, the main questions are whether the 0.15% fee is acceptable and whether the fund’s current spread, volume and tracking behavior suit the account. The fee is higher than QNDX’s documented 0.10% but lower than QQQ’s documented 0.18%. A five-basis-point difference between QNDX and QQQM is not automatically decisive if your actual execution is worse in the cheaper fund.

When QQQM can be preferable to switching

  • You already hold QQQM in a taxable account and selling would create a capital-gains event.
  • Your brokerage shows a consistently tighter spread or more reliable execution in QQQM than in the newer alternative.
  • You value an existing operating record and do not want to make a decision based mainly on a newly launched fund’s fee.
  • Your account size is small enough that the annual fee difference is minor compared with the consequences of a poor execution price.

These are decision factors, not a guarantee that QQQM will outperform QNDX. Both funds remain exposed to the same general Nasdaq-100 opportunity and concentration risks.

QQQ: same index, higher documented fee and established trading implementation

QQQ also tracks the Nasdaq-100 and has a long-established market presence. Invesco reported that a December 2025 reclassification reduced its expense ratio to 0.18% while preserving Nasdaq-100 access.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

For a passive investor, QQQ’s documented fee is higher than QQQM’s and QNDX’s. Its potential rationale is implementation rather than a different index: active traders may care about current liquidity, execution quality and options availability. Those characteristics must be verified in the market at the time of trading; a fund’s reputation does not guarantee a particular spread or fill.

VTI: the broadest U.S. alternative

VTI is the clearest choice when “alternative to QQQM” really means “I want one low-cost U.S. equity fund instead of a technology- and growth-heavy sleeve.” Vanguard says VTI seeks the Morningstar US Total Market Index, representing approximately 100% of the investable U.S. stock market, and lists a 0.03% expense ratio.

Its breadth changes the portfolio’s behavior. VTI includes large-, mid-, small- and micro-cap companies, so the result is not dependent on the performance of the Nasdaq-100’s large non-financial constituents. It can still own many of the same major companies, but it also includes thousands of businesses outside that narrower universe.

Who should consider VTI?

  • Investors building a broad U.S. core rather than targeting a specific growth index.
  • Investors who want small- and mid-cap exposure included automatically.
  • Investors for whom a 0.03% expense ratio and wide diversification matter more than a Nasdaq-100 tilt.

VTI is not a lower-cost way to obtain the same Nasdaq-100 portfolio. It is a different exposure with a different diversification objective.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

VOO: a low-cost large-cap core

VOO also lists a 0.03% expense ratio, according to Vanguard’s 2026 information, and tracks a large-capitalization-stock benchmark. It sits between the targeted Nasdaq-100 approach and the total-market approach in terms of breadth: it is designed for large-cap U.S. stocks, while VTI extends into mid-, small- and micro-cap companies.

VOO can make sense when your priority is a low-cost large-cap core and you do not need the Nasdaq-100’s specific eligibility rules. It should not be described as an exact QQQM replacement simply because both funds may hold some of the same household-name companies.

How to choose by portfolio role

Your primary objective Most relevant funds to compare Why What to verify
Targeted Nasdaq-100 growth exposure for long-term holding QNDX and QQQM Both are direct Nasdaq-100 choices; QNDX has the lower documented fee, while QQQM has a longer operating history than QNDX Current spread, assets, tracking difference and tax consequences of switching
Nasdaq-100 exposure with an established trading implementation QQQ It has a long-established market presence Whether its 0.18% fee and your actual execution justify the choice
One broad U.S. equity core VTI Approximately 100% of the investable U.S. stock market, according to Vanguard Whether broad diversification fits your risk tolerance and existing holdings
Low-cost large-cap U.S. core VOO Large-cap benchmark exposure at a 0.03% stated fee How its large-cap focus overlaps with other funds you own
Broad core plus a growth tilt VTI or VOO alongside a Nasdaq-100 fund Separates the diversified core from the targeted tilt Your risk capacity, time horizon, tax situation and concentration level before setting any allocation

The last row describes a possible portfolio structure, not a prescribed percentage. The appropriate allocation depends on circumstances that are not available from a fund comparison alone.

Costs beyond the expense ratio

Bid-ask spreads

The spread is the difference between the price at which you can buy and the price at which you can sell. It is an immediate trading cost. A fund with a slightly lower annual expense ratio can be more expensive for you if you buy or sell at a materially worse spread.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Tracking difference

An ETF can lag its index by more or less than its stated expense ratio because of portfolio sampling, transaction costs, cash balances, corporate actions and securities-lending revenue. Look at realized performance relative to the index over a sufficiently long period; QNDX’s June 2026 launch means the available history is necessarily limited as of this comparison.

Commissions and account charges

Many brokerages advertise commission-free online ETF trades, but availability, order types, regulatory fees and other account charges vary. Check your own broker’s current schedule rather than assuming that every ETF trade is free.

Taxes

In a taxable account, selling an existing QQQM, QQQ, VTI or VOO position can realize a capital gain or loss. Distributions and the tax treatment of gains depend on your jurisdiction, account type and personal circumstances. A five-basis-point fee saving does not by itself justify an immediate sale that creates a larger tax cost.

A practical comparison process before you buy

  1. Define the exposure. Write down whether you need the Nasdaq-100 specifically, a broad U.S. market fund or a large-cap U.S. core. Eliminate funds that do not match that requirement before comparing fees.
  2. Read the current fund documents. Confirm the index objective, expense ratio, launch date, distribution policy and any changes since the figures cited here.
  3. Check live trading conditions. Review the current bid-ask spread, typical volume, assets and, if relevant, options availability. Pay particular attention to this step for QNDX because it launched on June 23, 2026.
  4. Compare realized tracking. Examine how each fund has followed its index after expenses over the periods that actually exist. Do not treat a short record as proof of long-term superiority.
  5. Calculate the switching cost. In a taxable account, estimate the tax consequence of selling. In any account, consider the spread and commission for the proposed trade.
  6. Use an appropriate order. A limit order can specify the maximum price you will pay or minimum price you will accept. Confirm the estimated fill before submitting it, especially during volatile markets or outside the most liquid trading periods.
  7. Review concentration. If you already own a broad U.S. fund, adding a Nasdaq-100 fund increases exposure to the companies and sectors concentrated in that index. If you already own several large-cap growth funds, the incremental diversification may be smaller than it appears.

Common mistakes when replacing QQQM

Choosing the lowest fee without checking the index

VTI and VOO are cheaper at 0.03%, but their lower fees describe different portfolios. A lower number is not a valid comparison if the fund no longer supplies the exposure you intended to buy.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Treating QNDX’s fee as a complete verdict

QNDX’s 0.10% gross/net ratio is attractive, yet the fund’s June 2026 launch leaves less evidence about spreads, tracking and operational history than older alternatives. Evaluate the whole implementation.

Confusing overlap with equivalence

Two funds can own many of the same large companies and still have different indexes, weights and rebalancing rules. Overlapping holdings do not make VOO or VTI a Nasdaq-100 fund.

Ignoring the account and tax wrapper

The same ETF decision can have different consequences in a taxable brokerage account, an individual retirement account or another jurisdiction. Review the account rules and your own tax advice before selling an existing position.

Using a market order in a thin or fast market

A market order guarantees execution, not a particular price. Check the spread and consider a limit order when the quoted market is wide or moving rapidly.

Bottom line: which QQQM alternative is best?

For the closest low-cost replacement, start with QNDX: it tracks the Nasdaq-100 and has the lowest directly documented fee at 0.10%, but its June 23, 2026 launch means you should verify liquidity, spreads and tracking evidence before committing. QQQM remains a straightforward 0.15% Nasdaq-100 option. QQQ offers the same index with a 0.18% documented fee and may appeal when established trading implementation is the priority.

If your real objective is a diversified U.S. equity core, choose between VTI at 0.03% for approximately the full investable U.S. market and VOO at 0.03% for large-cap exposure. Neither should be selected as an exact Nasdaq-100 substitute. Match the index first, then compare fees, execution, taxes and portfolio concentration.
