QQQ is the more concentrated growth choice: it tracks the Nasdaq-100, had 59.8% in technology and 21.2% in consumer discretionary as of March 31, 2026, and charges 0.18%.
Choose QQQ when you intentionally want a large-cap growth and innovation tilt and can accept bigger swings. Holding both can make sense, but it generally adds more exposure to overlapping mega-cap growth companies rather than creating completely independent diversification.

What QQQ and SPY actually track
The two ETFs are not interchangeable versions of the same portfolio. Their benchmarks define different jobs in an asset allocation.
QQQ: the Nasdaq-100 without financial companies
QQQ is an exchange-traded fund based on the Nasdaq-100 Index. That index contains the 100 largest non-financial companies listed on Nasdaq. The result is a large-cap growth and innovation tilt spread across several industries, but with substantial weight in a relatively small group of technology and consumer-oriented companies.

Invesco describes QQQ as providing exposure to companies at the forefront of innovation across a diverse range of sectors and industries. “Diverse” here refers to the industries represented inside the Nasdaq-100; it does not mean the fund has the same sector balance as a broad-market index.
SPY: the S&P 500 as a broad U.S. large-cap core
SPY seeks to track the S&P 500 Index. State Street describes that benchmark as a diversified, float-adjusted, large-cap U.S. index holding companies across all 11 GICS sectors. Its March 31, 2026 fact sheet listed 503 holdings. SPY launched on January 22, 1993.
Because the S&P 500 includes every major sector, SPY is designed to make one fund the broad U.S. large-cap portion of a portfolio. It still has large positions in the biggest companies, but its sector opportunity set is wider than QQQ’s.

Fees: SPY costs less to hold
Invesco reports a 0.18% total expense ratio for QQQ. State Street reports a 0.0945% gross and net expense ratio for SPY. On a constant $10,000 balance, those stated rates imply approximately $18.00 per year for QQQ and $9.45 for SPY before compounding, trading costs, taxes and account fees.
| ETF | Stated expense ratio | Approximate annual expense on $10,000 |
|---|---|---|
| QQQ | 0.18% total expense ratio | $18.00 |
| SPY | 0.0945% gross/net expense ratio | $9.45 |
The dollar figures are arithmetic from the published ratios, not a quoted bill. Actual investor cost also depends on the account, the amount invested, the bid-ask spread, commissions if any, taxes and how the balance changes. For a long-term core holding, SPY’s lower stated fee is a meaningful advantage when two portfolios otherwise meet the same objective. A higher fee can still be acceptable when QQQ’s specific exposure is the reason you own it.
Diversification and concentration are the central trade-off
SPY spreads exposure across all 11 sectors
SPY’s benchmark includes companies from all 11 GICS sectors. That breadth means weakness in one industry can be offset by strength elsewhere, although the fund is still influenced by the largest U.S. companies and by the overall equity market. The 503 holdings listed in the March 31, 2026 fact sheet provide a substantially wider roster than QQQ’s 100-company index.

QQQ concentrates in technology and consumer discretionary
Invesco’s March 31, 2026 allocation table shows QQQ with 59.8% in technology and 21.2% in consumer discretionary. Together, those two sectors represented 81.0% of the allocation on that date. The remaining exposure was distributed across other eligible Nasdaq-100 industries, but the two large weights dominate the fund’s behavior.
This concentration can help QQQ when the market rewards fast-growing technology and consumer businesses. It can hurt when valuations contract, interest rates pressure long-duration growth shares, or a technology cycle turns down. QQQ is not a pure technology fund, yet its returns can still be highly sensitive to technology-sector earnings, spending and investor sentiment.

What the available performance history says—and does not say
Invesco reports that QQQ beat the S&P 500 in seven of the 10 years through June 30, 2026. Its March 31, 2026 fact sheet reports a 10-year annualized NAV return of 18.98%.
Those are historical observations, not a forecast and not a complete head-to-head return table. The two figures use different reporting dates, and the supplied performance material does not provide a matching SPY 10-year annualized result for the same date and method. It would therefore be misleading to turn QQQ’s cited result into a promise that it will continue to lead.
Invesco’s performance disclosure is explicit: “Past performance is not a guarantee of future results; current performance may be higher or lower than performance quoted.” Growth-heavy portfolios can experience larger drawdowns and longer stretches of underperformance when expensive technology and growth shares fall out of favor. A decision based only on the strongest historical period can leave an investor with more risk than intended.
When SPY is the better choice
You want one broad U.S. large-cap holding
SPY is the straightforward choice when the job is to own a diversified U.S. large-cap fund without making a sector bet. Its S&P 500 mandate covers every GICS sector, and its lower stated expense ratio reduces the ongoing drag on a long holding period.

You prefer portfolio balance over a growth tilt
If you do not have a strong view that technology and other growth businesses should represent an unusually large share of your assets, SPY avoids deliberately making that bet. It can serve as the equity core around which other asset classes or narrower positions are added.
You need a simpler rebalancing decision
A broad core fund is easier to monitor: you can rebalance against your target stock allocation without separately deciding whether a technology-heavy tilt has become too large. That simplicity is valuable for investors who want a repeatable plan rather than frequent sector judgments.
When QQQ is the better choice
You deliberately want Nasdaq-100 exposure
QQQ is appropriate when the concentration is the feature you want. It gives a single holding a large-cap growth and innovation orientation that would be difficult to reproduce with a broad-market fund alone.

You can tolerate larger swings
The 59.8% technology and 21.2% consumer-discretionary allocations reported on March 31, 2026 mean QQQ can respond sharply to changes in growth expectations, valuations, rates and technology spending. Before buying, decide how you would react to a substantial decline and how long you could remain invested during a period of lagging performance.
You are using it as a satellite, not an accidental core
Many investors use QQQ as a growth satellite around a broader core. The important point is to set a target weight and a rebalancing rule in advance. Without those rules, a strong rally can let the satellite become an unintended majority of the portfolio.
Can you hold QQQ and SPY together?
Yes, but the combination should have a defined purpose. Both funds own large U.S. companies, so adding QQQ to SPY increases exposure to growth and technology rather than delivering two completely independent portfolios.

Measure the overlap before setting a percentage
Constituent weights change over time. To know your actual exposure, download synchronized holdings for both ETFs from their issuers on the same date, combine the weights, and identify companies and sectors that appear in both. The available material establishes that overlap exists among large-cap constituents, but it does not establish a current universal overlap percentage. Do not use an old overlap figure as if it were permanent.
Calculate the portfolio-level technology weight
Multiply each fund’s portfolio weight by its technology allocation, then add the results. Repeat the exercise for consumer discretionary and for any individual company that is a major position in both funds. This tells you what the combination adds to your total portfolio, including retirement accounts and employer stock, rather than what either ETF appears to hold in isolation.
Write a rebalancing rule
Choose either a calendar review or a tolerance band, such as reviewing whenever a position moves a set number of percentage points from its target. The exact band is a personal policy, not a number established by either issuer. The purpose is to prevent QQQ’s performance from silently changing the risk profile you selected.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone.Dividends, taxes and account implementation
Do not assume either fund is the higher-income option from the available figures
The cited issuer passages do not provide synchronized current dividend-yield data for QQQ and SPY. A fair income comparison requires same-date 30-day SEC yields or trailing-distribution data from both issuers, with the date and methodology labeled. Without that matched information, choosing between the funds on the basis of yield would be speculation.
Match the ETF to the account
Both ETFs trade through a securities account. Before placing an order, check the account’s trading rules, tax treatment, available cash, recurring-investment features and any transaction charges. In a taxable account, distributions and realized gains can have tax consequences; in a retirement account, the applicable rules are different. Use the rules for your country and account type, and consult a qualified tax professional for personal advice.
Account for trading costs
Expense ratios are only one part of implementation. A market order can execute at a less favorable price than a limit order, and the bid-ask spread is a real cost even when a broker advertises commission-free trading. Compare the live quote, spread and order size before trading, particularly outside normal market hours.

A practical decision process
- Define the job. Write whether the holding is meant to be a broad U.S. equity core, a growth satellite or a combination of the two.
- Check your existing exposure. Include other index funds, employer shares and accounts held elsewhere. A portfolio can already be technology-heavy before QQQ is added.
- Compare the benchmark fit. Choose SPY for all-sector S&P 500 exposure; choose QQQ for the Nasdaq-100’s 100 non-financial companies and growth tilt.
- Compare the ongoing fee. Use 0.0945% for SPY and 0.18% for QQQ as the cited ratios, then consider trading, tax and account costs.
- Stress-test your reaction to losses. If a concentrated growth position would cause you to sell during a downturn, its target weight is probably too high for your plan.
- Set a target and review rule. Decide in advance how often you will review holdings and what deviation triggers rebalancing.
- Verify current data before trading. Holdings, sector weights, distributions and fees can change. Use the latest issuer fact sheets and prospectus rather than relying on a historic snapshot.
Illustrative portfolio roles
These examples show how the funds can be assigned a role; they are not personal allocation recommendations.
Broad-core approach
An investor seeking one U.S. large-cap equity sleeve could use SPY as the core, accepting market-wide large-cap exposure and its lower stated fee without adding a deliberate Nasdaq-100 tilt.
Core-plus-growth approach
An investor who wants broad exposure but also has a written preference for growth could pair a core position in SPY with a smaller, predefined QQQ satellite. The investor should calculate the combined technology, consumer-discretionary and overlapping-company weights before deciding the satellite size.
What’s actually slowing this PC down?
Pick the symptom - the matching free tool is one click away.
Concentrated-growth approach
An investor choosing QQQ alone is making a stronger sector and style decision: the portfolio will be tied more closely to the Nasdaq-100’s large growth companies and less to sectors that are represented in the S&P 500 but not heavily represented in QQQ. That approach requires the ability to withstand greater concentration risk.
Bottom line for different priorities
| Priority | More suitable starting point | Reason |
|---|---|---|
| One diversified U.S. large-cap core | SPY | All 11 GICS sectors, 503 holdings in the cited March 31, 2026 fact sheet, and a 0.0945% stated expense ratio |
| Intentional large-cap growth tilt | QQQ | Nasdaq-100 exposure with 59.8% technology and 21.2% consumer discretionary in the cited March 31, 2026 allocation table |
| Lowest stated ongoing fee | SPY | 0.0945% versus QQQ’s 0.18% |
| Both funds together | Only with a target and overlap review | The combination can increase growth and technology exposure because large-cap constituents overlap |
For most investors asking for a single long-term core ETF, SPY is the more broadly diversified and lower-cost answer. QQQ can be the better tool when its concentration is intentional, understood and sized to a portfolio that can tolerate larger swings. Neither issuer establishes a universal best ETF for every investor.
