The QNAP TS-432XeU is a 1U rack NAS only 292 mm deep, with four drive bays, two 2.5GbE ports and one 10GbE SFP+ port, running on an ARM processor. It is worth considering if you need networked storage in a shallow cabinet and your software needs fit QTS on ARM. The “small price” in the headline rests on one UK listing: £617 excluding VAT at LambdaTek, reported by ITPro in its review dated 16 September 2026. That figure covers the bare NAS only. Drives, any networking hardware and expansion units are extra.

Who the TS-432XeU is built for

QNAP positions this model for small businesses and for spaces where a conventional deep rack appliance is awkward to fit. QNAP’s product overview names small offices, media cabinets, factories, surveillance rooms and AV control environments. The common workloads are shared files, backup and restore, team collaboration, snapshots and containerized applications. The short chassis is the reason to look at it. If your cabinet has limited depth, that matters more than any other spec on this page.

Hardware specifications

The values below come from QNAP’s published specification for the TS-432XeU-4G.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.
Item Specification
Form factor 1U rack, 292 mm chassis depth
Processor Annapurna Labs Alpine quad-core ARM Cortex-A57, 1.70 GHz
Memory 4 GB DDR4 SODIMM installed; 16 GB maximum
Drive bays Four 3.5-inch SATA bays that also accept 2.5-inch SATA SSDs
Network Two 2.5GbE ports; one 10GbE SFP+ port
USB Four USB 3.2 Gen 1 ports
Cooling Three 40 mm fans
Power supply 100 W
Operating system named in specification QTS 5.2.9
Standard warranty Three years

Two points are easy to miss. The memory is 4 GB as shipped, so anyone planning containers or heavier services should check whether the upgrade path to 16 GB is practical for their configuration. The 10GbE port is SFP+, not 10GBASE-T, so you need an SFP+ module or direct-attach cable and a switch or host that matches it.

  • EXACT-MATCH UPGRADE — 8GB DDR4-3200 (PC4-25600), 2Rx8 Unbuffered non-ECC, 1.2V, CL22, 260-pin. The precise rank, voltage, and timing your system's memory controller expects, so it is recognized at full capacity and runs at its rated speed.
  • VERIFIED FITMENT — Compatible with the QNAP TS-432XeU Short-Depth Rackmount NAS. The 260-pin SODIMM form factor this NAS requires — not a desktop UDIMM or an ECC/Registered server module. Spec-matched to the NAS's memory-population rules.
  • PLUG-AND-PLAY PERFORMANCE — JEDEC-standard unbuffered non-ECC module with the SPD profile your system expects: install and boot at rated speed with no BIOS changes. Low-voltage 1.2V DDR4 for cooler, more efficient operation.
  • CHECK YOUR CONFIG — System memory support varies by model and processor. Consult your system manual for supported capacities, approved DIMM population order, and installation steps before purchase.
  • LIFETIME SUPPORT — Backed by a lifetime replacement warranty and free US-based technical support. Researched, matched, and compatibility-tested by NEMIX RAM, a US-based server memory specialist since 1993, and backed by a lifetime warranty.

Performance: two different test setups

Two sets of figures are available, and they were measured differently. QNAP’s own lab results use SMB sequential tests with four Samsung 850 PRO 512 GB SATA SSDs in RAID 5 on QTS 5.2.7. QNAP says results may vary by environment. ITPro’s review lab used four 4 TB Seagate IronWolf NAS hard drives and a mix of Iometer and real file-copy tests. The two sets use different units, so do not compare them line by line.

Test (source) Setup Read Write
SMB sequential, 10GbE (QNAP lab, product page) Four Samsung 850 PRO 512 GB SATA SSDs, RAID 5, QTS 5.2.7 1,181 MB/s 859 MB/s
SMB sequential, two 2.5GbE connections (QNAP lab, product page) Same SSD configuration 590 MB/s 591 MB/s
Iometer sequential, 2.5GbE (ITPro, September 2026) Four 4 TB Seagate IronWolf NAS HDDs 2.3 Gbit/s 2.2 Gbit/s
Iometer sequential, 10GbE with SFP+ DAC (ITPro, September 2026) Four 4 TB Seagate IronWolf NAS HDDs 8.6 Gbit/s 5.6 Gbit/s
Large-file copy, 10GbE (ITPro, September 2026) Four 4 TB Seagate IronWolf NAS HDDs 3.8 Gbit/s 2.9 Gbit/s

ITPro’s backup test, a 22.4 GB folder containing 10,500 small files, averaged 1.7 Gbit/s. Small-file workloads are typically slower than large sequential transfers, which is why that figure is lower than the large-file copy results.

ITPro describes its 2.5GbE results as comparable to the TS-435XeU. Its 10GbE Iometer results were 4.6% lower than that model’s for reads and 22% lower for writes. This comparison comes from one review setup and should not be read as a universal ranking.

QNAP TS-264-8G-US 2 Bay Desktop NAS
  • Intel Quad-core CPU burst up to 2.9 GHz with 8GB RAM
  • Dual 2.5GbE (2.5G/1G/100M) ports accelerates file sharing across teams and devices or streamline large file transfers
  • Dual M.2 PCIe Gen3x2 NVMe SSD slots enable cache acceleration or SSD storage pools for improved performance
  • Multiple USB 3.2 Gen 2 ports (type-A) with up to 10Gb/s transfer speeds, allowing compatibility with newer, faster USB drives/expansion enclosures for transferring large media files
  • Centrally store and organize personal or family photos, music, and videos

How it compares with the TS-435XeU

ITPro compares the TS-432XeU with the TS-435XeU, which it describes as the higher-specification model. The table reflects ITPro’s description of both models.

Feature TS-432XeU TS-435XeU (as described by ITPro)
Positioning Lower-cost configuration Higher-specification model
Processor Quad-core ARM Cortex-A57, 1.70 GHz 2.2 GHz processor
Internal M.2 NVMe slots Not stated in the review Two
10GbE SFP+ ports One Two
Price reference £617 ex VAT (LambdaTek, UK) Not stated in the review

If you need two 10GbE ports or internal NVMe cache, the TS-435XeU is the model to compare against. The TS-432XeU makes sense when one 10GbE link and a shallow chassis are enough.

ARM limits you need to check

The processor is ARM-based, and that shapes what software you can run. ITPro reports the following limits:

Rank #3
QNAP TS-432PXU-2G 4 Bay Rackmount NAS
  • AnnapurnaLabs Alpine AL324 64-bit ARM Cortex-A57 quad-core 1.7GHz processor
  • 2GB UDIMM DDR4 RAM (MAX 16GB)
  • 4 X 3.5" SATA 6Gb/s, 3Gb/s (Diskless)
  • 2 X 2.5 Gigabit Ethernet Ports
  • 2 X 10 Gigabit Ethernet SFP+ Ports
  • QuTS hero is not supported on this model family. Buyers who need ZFS-focused features should look elsewhere.
  • Virtualization Station and Hyper Data Protector are unavailable on ARM-based QNAP appliances, according to ITPro.
  • Heavier virtualization is a poor fit for this hardware. Check your workload against the 4 GB default memory before buying.

Before you buy, check the current QTS app list on QNAP’s site for your exact model and confirm that every app you depend on is available on it.

Drives, expansion and noise

The four bays are empty until you add drives, and the chassis is a storage platform, not a finished system. ITPro tested with four NAS-rated 4 TB HDDs. The bays also accept 2.5-inch SATA SSDs, which is relevant if you want flash for a shared folder.

For more capacity, QNAP supports USB-attached external storage. ITPro suggests the QNAP TR-004U as a rack expansion unit of the same depth. Confirm current expansion compatibility on QNAP’s compatibility list before you buy the unit.

ITPro described the unit as “whisper-quiet”. That is the reviewer’s impression from its test environment, not a measured noise figure. With three 40 mm fans, the actual sound level will depend on your drives, room and rack placement.

What the price covers

The £617 figure is a single UK listing at LambdaTek, excluding VAT, recorded in ITPro’s review on 16 September 2026. It is not a current or global price. Prices change, and a listing from one retailer does not tell you what the unit costs elsewhere.

To estimate a complete cost, add the following:

  • The NAS price from a live local retailer
  • Four NAS-rated drives sized for your capacity needs
  • Rack rails, if your cabinet requires them and they are not included with your purchase
  • An SFP+ module or direct-attach cable and a compatible switch or host if you use the 10GbE port
  • An expansion unit such as the TR-004U, if you need more bays than four

Only after you total these costs does the headline “small price” have meaning for your situation.

Is it worth it?

The answer depends on five things, in roughly this order:

  1. Rack depth and mounting. If you need a 1U unit no deeper than 292 mm, this is one of the few options built for that.
  2. Network match. Two 2.5GbE ports suit a 2.5GbE network. One 10GbE SFP+ port suits a host that can use an SFP+ link. Do not buy for 10GbE unless your switch and clients support it.
  3. Software needs. If you rely on QuTS hero, Virtualization Station or Hyper Data Protector, this model is not a match.
  4. Capacity and drive cost. Four drives plus any expansion can cost more than the NAS itself.
  5. Total local cost. Use a live regional price for the full build, not the September 2026 UK reference alone.

If your needs fit points one and two, and your software fits the ARM limits, the TS-432XeU is a practical compact NAS. If they do not, the chassis size will not compensate for the software restrictions.
