Qi2 and MagSafe in plain language
Wireless charging standards define how a charger and device transfer power, communicate and manage safety. A brand can build products around a standard, but a brand name and a standards certification are not the same thing.

- What You Get: Anker Zolo Wireless Charger (Magnetic, Pad) , welcome guide, 24-month warranty, and our friendly customer service.
- Magnetic Power Profile (MPP): based on MagSafe technology contributed by Apple to the WPC and branded with the Qi2 logo. It uses magnetic alignment between compatible devices and chargers.
- Extended Power Profile (EPP): a Qi v2.0 profile that does not include magnets.
In everyday shopping, “Qi2” usually signals the magnetic MPP experience, but you should still check the exact certification and product specification. The WPC treats certification as a testable standard rather than a marketing phrase. Certified products pass independent testing for safety, interoperability and energy efficiency.
What MagSafe means
MagSafe is Apple’s branded implementation and accessory ecosystem. Apple describes Qi itself as an open, universal charging standard created by the WPC, while MagSafe adds Apple’s magnetic alignment, accessory attachment and device-specific charging behavior to compatible products.
MagSafe therefore describes a controlled Apple experience. Qi2 describes an open certification program that multiple manufacturers can use. Apple’s contribution of MagSafe technology to the WPC explains why a Qi2 MPP charger can resemble a MagSafe charger without being an Apple-branded accessory.

Is Qi2 the same as MagSafe?
No. They overlap technically, but the terms answer different questions: Qi2 tells you which WPC standard a product is certified for; MagSafe tells you that Apple’s branded system and accessory ecosystem are involved.
| Aspect | Qi2 | MagSafe |
|---|---|---|
| Who defines it | Wireless Power Consortium | Apple |
| Magnetic technology | Qi2 MPP is based on MagSafe technology contributed by Apple | Apple’s own branded magnetic charging and accessory system |
| Openness | Designed for products from multiple manufacturers and broader device interoperability | Focused on Apple’s compatible devices and accessories |
| Nonmagnetic profile | Qi v2.0 also defines EPP, which does not include magnets | MagSafe’s defining accessory feature is magnetic alignment |
| Certification check | Look for WPC Qi2 certification for the exact model | Look for Apple’s MagSafe designation and the charger’s published compatibility |
| Typical reason to choose it | Cross-brand choice, Android expansion or a standards-based accessory purchase | Apple-controlled integration and first-party accessory behavior |
A product described only as “magnetic,” “Qi compatible” or “MagSafe compatible” may not have Qi2 certification or Apple-certified MagSafe performance. A magnetic ring can help a phone stick to a charger, but it does not change the charger’s electrical standard.
Charging speed: 15W Qi2, 25W Qi2 and MagSafe limits
Power ratings are maximums under a specific phone-and-charger combination. They are not promises that every device will draw the headline wattage.
How Qi2 power changed
Original Qi2 launched at 15W in 2023. On July 23, 2025, the WPC introduced Qi v2.2.1, branded Qi2 25W. The WPC says Qi2 25W delivers nearly 70% more power than original Qi2. The organization also said major Android smartphones would join the Qi2 ecosystem as Qi2 25W certification expanded and that testing had grown to hundreds of devices.

| Standard or charger generation | Published maximum | What controls the real result |
|---|---|---|
| Original Qi2 (2023) | 15W | The phone must support the relevant Qi2 input, and the charger and adapter must supply it. |
| Qi2 25W, Qi v2.2.1 (2025) | 25W headline standard power | The phone must be certified for Qi2 25W; the charger and power adapter must also support the required level. |
| Current Apple MagSafe Charger on specified newer iPhones | Up to 25W with a 30W-or-greater adapter | Only compatible newer iPhone models and the current charger revision can reach this ceiling. |
| Earlier MagSafe charger revision on iPhone 15 and earlier | Up to 15W with a 20W-or-greater adapter | Older charger hardware, phone model and adapter limit the result. |
| Many Qi-certified chargers on iPhone | Up to 7.5W, according to Apple’s support guidance | The phone, charger certification and charging mode determine the negotiated power. |
Apple’s current MagSafe Charger is certified for Qi2 25W and Qi charging. Apple says it can provide up to 25W with a 30W adapter on specified newer iPhones, while iPhone 15 and earlier use the earlier MagSafe charger behavior described above. Those are model- and hardware-dependent ceilings, not guarantees for every accessory sold with a MagSafe label.

Why a 25W label may not produce 25W
- The phone may support only 15W Qi2 or a lower Qi charging rate.
- The charger may be an earlier revision or may not be certified for Qi2 25W.
- The power adapter may be below the required 30W or 20W threshold for the stated MagSafe mode.
- Thermal management, battery state and charging negotiation can reduce power during use.
- A case, poor alignment or an object between the coils can interrupt or slow charging.
For an honest speed comparison, identify all three parts: the exact phone model, the exact charger revision and the power adapter rating. Comparing “25W” on one box with “15W” on another without those details is not meaningful.
Compatibility by phone type
iPhone 8 through iPhone 11
Apple says Qi-certified charging works on iPhone 8 or later, and many Qi-certified chargers charge these phones at up to 7.5W. These generations do not have the built-in MagSafe magnetic system used by later models. They can still receive power from a MagSafe Charger as Qi devices, but they will not attach magnetically and their charging speed and behavior differ from a MagSafe-equipped iPhone.
iPhone 12 and later
MagSafe magnetic alignment begins with compatible iPhone generations starting with iPhone 12 and continues on the newer models Apple lists. A compatible iPhone can attach to a MagSafe charger or a Qi2 MPP charger. The exact maximum still depends on the phone generation, charger revision and adapter.
An iPhone with MagSafe can use nonmagnetic Qi charging as well. You lose the magnetic attachment and may receive a different power level, but the two charging methods are not mutually exclusive.
Android phones
Qi2’s open-standard strategy is intended to broaden interoperability beyond Apple. The WPC has said major Android smartphones would join Qi2 25W as certification expands. Availability varies by model, market and release date, so verify the exact phone rather than assuming that any recent Android handset supports Qi2.
Some phones can support Qi2 charging without built-in magnets. In that case, a compatible magnetic case or accessory may provide attachment. The case must preserve coil alignment and should be identified as compatible with the phone and charger; a generic adhesive ring does not prove that the electrical system is Qi2-certified.
Alignment, efficiency and everyday use
Magnetic alignment addresses one of wireless charging’s most common problems: the coils can be close but not centered. The WPC says Qi2’s magnetic attachment reduces positioning fuss and is intended to improve charging convenience and efficiency. Apple describes MagSafe as providing optimal magnetic alignment for faster, more efficient charging and says its technology reduces energy waste compared with other wireless charging methods.

Cases and objects between the phone and charger
Use a case designed for the phone’s charging system. A thick, misaligned or nonmagnetic case can weaken attachment and reduce charging performance. Metal objects can interfere with charging and heat up. Apple advises removing sensitive cards, badges, passports and key fobs from between the phone and charger because the magnetic field and heat may damage them or affect their function.
What certification actually tells you
Certification is useful because it identifies a tested product model, not merely a product category. A listing can say “supports Qi” or “works with MagSafe” while leaving the exact electronics, magnet arrangement and power profile unclear. For a Qi2 purchase, search the WPC certification database for the exact model number printed on the charger or its packaging. A family name, retailer title or photograph is not enough if several revisions exist.
The WPC says certified products undergo independent testing for safety, interoperability and energy efficiency. That does not guarantee a particular phone will charge at the maximum advertised rate, but it is stronger evidence than a generic magnetic claim. For Apple hardware, use Apple’s compatibility documentation to confirm the iPhone generation, charger revision and adapter requirement. Keep the product page or manual if you need to verify which version you bought.
MagSafe hardware that also speaks Qi2
Apple’s current MagSafe Charger is a useful example of the overlap. Apple lists it as Qi2 25W certified and compatible with Qi charging. On specified newer iPhones, it can provide up to 25W when paired with a 30W-or-greater adapter. The same charger can supply power to Qi devices, including iPhone 8 or later, but a non-MagSafe phone will not gain magnetic attachment and may charge at a lower rate.
Apple lists one-metre and two-metre versions of the current MagSafe Charger. Cable length changes placement convenience, not the wireless standard. Check whether the package includes a wall adapter; the adapter rating is a separate requirement, and a charger cannot create 30W input from an underpowered source.
Accessory ecosystem and mixed households
MagSafe’s advantage is consistency inside Apple’s ecosystem: magnetic chargers, stands, wallets and other attachments are designed around compatible iPhone dimensions and Apple’s published behavior. A Qi2 accessory can offer similar alignment while allowing more manufacturer choice. That choice is valuable when you want a desk stand, travel charger or power bank from a particular brand, but you still need to verify certification and phone support for every product.
In a household mixing iPhones and Android phones, Qi2 can be a practical common standard only when each target phone supports the required Qi2 profile and magnetic setup. One phone may support 15W Qi2, another Qi2 25W, and an older iPhone may fall back to ordinary Qi charging. A shared charger works, but the slowest or least-featured phone determines that user’s result.

| Your priority | Best starting point | Reason |
|---|---|---|
| You own a compatible iPhone and want Apple’s first-party ecosystem | MagSafe | Apple controls the accessory experience and publishes model-specific charging behavior. |
| You own an iPhone but want more charger-brand choice | Certified Qi2 MPP | Qi2 is an open WPC profile based on MagSafe technology and designed for interoperability. |
| You own an Android phone | Qi2, if your exact model is certified | Qi2 is the cross-brand path, while MagSafe is Apple-branded. You may need a magnetic case. |
| You want the highest possible speed | Compare the complete phone, charger and adapter combination | 15W and 25W ratings are conditional ceilings, not universal outputs. |
| You want the lowest compatibility risk | A product listed in the WPC certification database or Apple’s compatibility documentation | Certification and model lists are stronger evidence than “Qi compatible” or “MagSafe-style” wording. |
| You are equipping a mixed iPhone-and-Android household | Qi2 where every target phone supports the required setup | It offers a common standards-based option, but check each phone and case individually. |
How to buy the right charger
- Write down the exact phone model. Do not rely on the product family alone. Note whether it is an iPhone 8-or-later Qi device, a MagSafe-compatible iPhone generation or an Android model with confirmed Qi2 support.
- Decide whether you need magnetic attachment. If the phone has no built-in magnets, budget for a compatible case or magnetic accessory. If you only need power, a nonmagnetic Qi charger may meet your needs.
- Check the standard and certification. For Qi2, verify that the exact charger model appears in the WPC certification database. “Qi compatible” is not the same as Qi2 certification. For MagSafe, confirm Apple’s stated charger revision and supported iPhone models.
- Match the adapter. A charger cannot deliver its rated power if the wall adapter is underpowered. Apple’s current 25W MagSafe mode requires a 30W-or-greater adapter on specified newer iPhones; the earlier 15W mode requires a 20W-or-greater adapter.
- Check the case and accessories. Confirm that the case supports the same magnetic system and does not place metal, cards or other sensitive items between the coils.
- Plan for the slowest device. In a shared home, the charger’s advertised maximum applies only to devices that support it. A phone limited to 7.5W or 15W will not become a 25W device because the charger is labeled 25W.
- Verify what is in the box. A cable or charging puck may be sold without a wall adapter. Confirm that the included or existing adapter meets the stated requirement before comparing total purchase cost.
- Record the model number. Save the exact charger and case model so a later firmware, replacement or warranty question can be checked against the same certification entry.
Common mistakes and how to fix them
| Symptom | Likely cause | Fix |
|---|---|---|
| The phone charges but does not hold magnetically | The phone lacks built-in magnets, or the case has no compatible magnetic ring | Use a compatible magnetic case or treat the charger as a flat Qi charger. |
| Charging is much slower than the box suggests | The phone, charger revision or adapter does not support the advertised ceiling | Check all three specifications and use the required adapter rating. |
| The charger repeatedly starts and stops | Poor coil alignment, a thick case, metal or a card between the devices | Remove the obstruction, reseat the phone and test without the case. |
| A product says “MagSafe compatible” but is absent from Qi2 listings | Magnetic attachment may be present without WPC Qi2 certification | Decide whether Apple certification or Qi2 certification is required, then verify the exact model accordingly. |
| An Android phone does not attach to a Qi2 charger | The phone may support wireless power but not magnetic alignment | Check the phone’s Qi2 specification and use the manufacturer’s compatible magnetic case if needed. |
| A card, badge or key fob stops working after charging | It was left between the phone and charger | Remove sensitive cards, badges, passports and key fobs before charging. |
| The charger gets unexpectedly warm | Misalignment, a metal object, a thick case or normal power-management throttling | Clear the charging surface, center the phone and test without the case; stop using damaged equipment. |
| A new phone charges at a lower rate than an older one | Different phones negotiate different limits, even on the same charger | Use the newer phone’s published specification rather than the charger’s headline number. |
What to remember before you decide
Qi2 and MagSafe are related but not interchangeable labels. Qi2 MPP uses MagSafe technology contributed by Apple, then places it inside an open WPC certification framework. MagSafe remains Apple’s branded implementation and accessory ecosystem.

Frequently asked questions
Frequently Asked Questions
Is Qi2 the same as MagSafe?
No. Qi2 is the WPC’s open standard. Its Magnetic Power Profile is based on MagSafe technology Apple contributed to the WPC, while MagSafe remains Apple’s branded charging and accessory system.
Which is faster, Qi2 or MagSafe?
Neither name guarantees a single speed. Original Qi2 is 15W, Qi2 25W is the 2025 standard update, and Apple’s current MagSafe Charger can reach up to 25W on specified newer iPhones with a 30W-or-greater adapter. The phone, charger revision and adapter must all support the claimed level.

Random freezes, missing sound and display glitches usually trace back to one bad driver. Find and replace yours safely.Free scan · under a minuteWill a Qi2 charger work with my iPhone?
A compatible iPhone can use a certified Qi2 MPP charger. iPhone 8 and later support Qi charging, but magnetic attachment begins with compatible iPhone generations starting with iPhone 12. Older models may charge without attaching and may use a lower power level.
Do I need a MagSafe case for Qi2?
You need a compatible magnetic case only if the phone lacks built-in magnets or the case blocks alignment. A case can provide attachment, but it does not make a non-certified charger Qi2-certified. Confirm both the phone-case combination and the charger model.
Is a 25W Qi2 charger really 25W on my phone?
Only if the phone is certified for Qi2 25W and the charger and adapter meet the required specifications. A phone limited to 15W Qi2, 7.5W Qi or another lower ceiling will not draw 25W.
Can I use a MagSafe Charger with an Android phone?
It can provide Qi power to a compatible Android device, but MagSafe is Apple-branded and magnetic attachment is not automatic. Check the Android model’s Qi or Qi2 support and use a compatible magnetic case only when the manufacturer specifies one.
How do I avoid counterfeit or misleading labels?
For Qi2, search the exact charger model in the WPC certification database. For MagSafe, check Apple’s compatibility and charger-revision documentation. Terms such as “magnetic,” “Qi compatible” and “MagSafe compatible” alone do not establish certification or maximum speed.
Can cards or key fobs stay on the phone while it charges?
No. Apple advises removing sensitive cards, badges, passports and key fobs from between the phone and charger. Magnetic fields and heat can damage them or affect their function, and metal objects can interfere with charging.
The Bottom Line
Choose certified Qi2 for an open, cross-brand magnetic standard; choose MagSafe for Apple’s controlled accessory ecosystem. Qi2 MPP is derived from MagSafe technology, but certification, phone support, charger revision and adapter rating determine what you actually get. Check the exact model before buying, and treat 15W or 25W as conditional maximums rather than guaranteed charging speeds.
