Qi2 is the open Wireless Power Consortium (WPC) magnetic-charging standard; MagSafe is Apple’s proprietary magnetic charging and accessory system. They feel similar because Apple contributed MagSafe technology to Qi2’s Magnetic Power Profile, but they are not interchangeable in every phone, charger revision or wattage tier.

For most people with a Qi2-compatible phone, buy a certified Qi2 magnetic charger for wider cross-brand compatibility. Choose Apple’s MagSafe Charger when you specifically need Apple’s official behavior, MagSafe-only accessories or the highest MagSafe speed supported by your exact iPhone, charger revision and USB-C adapter.

Qi2 and MagSafe at a glance

Question Qi2 MagSafe
Who defines it? The Wireless Power Consortium, an industry standards body. Apple.
What is it? An open, certified magnetic wireless-charging standard. Qi2 also includes a non-magnetic Extended Power Profile. A magnetic charging and accessory ecosystem built into supported Apple devices.
Magnetic alignment Yes, when both the phone and charger implement Qi2’s Magnetic Power Profile, or when a compatible magnetic case provides it. Yes, on iPhones and accessories designed for MagSafe.
Original launch power 15W for the first Qi2 generation. Up to 15W on many earlier iPhone configurations; newer combinations can be faster.
Newest stated ceiling Qi2 25W (Qi v2.2.1), launched in July 2025. The phone, charger and software must all support it. Apple lists up to 25W for specified newer iPhones with the current supported MagSafe Charger and a 30W-or-greater adapter.
Phone range Compatible iPhones, an expanding set of Android phones, and Qi2 Ready phone-and-case combinations. Supported iPhone models and Apple’s MagSafe accessory ecosystem.
Best reason to choose it Cross-brand flexibility, certified interoperability and a broad choice of charger designs. Official Apple integration, MagSafe-specific accessories or a model-specific speed advantage.

Certification matters more than a marketing label. WPC says certified products undergo independent laboratory testing for safety and interoperability, and its standards page lists more than 13,000 Qi Certified products.

What Qi2 actually is

Qi2 is a standard, not a single charger

Qi2 is the second-generation version of the WPC’s Qi wireless-charging standard. Qi v2.0 launched in 2023. Its Magnetic Power Profile uses a ring of magnets to center the phone over the charging coil, reducing the misalignment that can waste energy or interrupt charging. Qi v2.0 also defines an Extended Power Profile for non-magnetic Qi2 products, so not every Qi2-certified device necessarily snaps onto a phone.

Apple contributed the MagSafe-derived magnetic technology used in Qi2’s Magnetic Power Profile. That shared foundation explains why a Qi2 magnetic puck can look and feel like a MagSafe puck, but the certification program, device firmware and allowed power levels are still separate.

Qi2 25W is a newer revision

Qi2 25W is the WPC’s Qi v2.2.1 revision, introduced in July 2025. WPC says it delivers nearly 70% more power than original 15W Qi2. The organization describes a capability of charging a smartphone battery from 0% to 50% in about 30 minutes. That is a WPC capability statement, not an independently verified result for every phone, charger, adapter or battery temperature.

A charger marked “25W” cannot force 25W into a phone that supports only 15W, or into a phone whose software has not enabled the newer profile. Treat the number as the charger’s certified capability, then verify the phone’s specification and any required firmware.

What MagSafe means

MagSafe combines alignment with Apple’s device controls

MagSafe is Apple’s magnetic charging and accessory system. The magnets position the charger, while the iPhone and charger negotiate an Apple-defined charging mode. Apple describes MagSafe as providing “optimal magnetic alignment for faster, more efficient charging.” The system also supports accessories such as wallets, stands and mounts designed around the MagSafe ring.

Apple’s support documentation distinguishes MagSafe from ordinary Qi charging. Many Qi-certified chargers charge an iPhone at up to 7.5W, while MagSafe can use higher Apple-approved tiers when the phone, charger revision and power adapter meet the stated conditions.

MagSafe speed depends on the exact combination

Apple configuration Published maximum Conditions Apple specifies
Specified newer iPhones with the current supported MagSafe Charger Up to 25W Use the supported charger part number and a 30W-or-greater USB-C power adapter.
iPhone 16 and iPhone 16 Pro in that newer configuration 22.5W peak Apple’s stated peak for those models; the 25W figure is not universal across every iPhone.
iPhone 15 and earlier with the earlier MagSafe Charger part number Up to 15W Use a 20W-or-greater USB-C power adapter.
iPhone 12 mini and iPhone 13 mini Up to 12W Apple lists this lower ceiling under its stated MagSafe conditions.

The USB-C adapter may be sold separately. A charger puck connected to an under-rated adapter will not reach the published tier, even if the puck itself is capable of it.

Is Qi2 the same as MagSafe?

No. They share magnetic technology, but they are different certification and accessory ecosystems.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.
  • Qi2 is open and multi-brand. A certified Qi2 charger can be used across supported phones from different manufacturers.
  • MagSafe is Apple-controlled. Apple determines which iPhones and accessories receive MagSafe behavior and which charger revisions unlock particular speeds.
  • Physical similarity does not prove equal performance. Two pucks may both attach magnetically while delivering different negotiated power.
  • Accessory compatibility can diverge. A magnetic case may hold a charger securely but still lack the markings, magnets or alignment profile required for every accessory or speed tier.

In practical use, a Qi2 magnetic charger often gives an iPhone 12 or newer the same basic snap-on alignment as MagSafe. Whether it reaches the same wattage is a separate question answered by the phone’s certification, the charger’s certification and the adapter behind it.

Which phones work with which standard?

iPhone 12, 13, 14, 15 and 16 families

These iPhone generations include Apple’s magnetic charging hardware. A certified Qi2 magnetic charger usually provides convenient alignment and broad charger choice. Select Apple’s MagSafe Charger instead if you require Apple’s official charger behavior, a MagSafe-only accessory or the highest MagSafe tier documented for your specific model.

Do not assume that every iPhone in a generation has the same ceiling. The mini models have Apple’s 12W MagSafe limit under the stated conditions, and Apple lists a 22.5W peak for iPhone 16 and iPhone 16 Pro in the newer 25W-capable configuration.

iPhone 8 through iPhone 11

These phones support Qi wireless charging but do not have Apple’s built-in magnetic profile. A Qi or Qi2 charger can charge them when the charger supports the phone’s ordinary Qi mode, but the phone will not automatically snap into the magnetic center. A magnetic case or ring may provide physical attachment, yet it cannot add a higher charging protocol that the phone does not support.

Android phones

Qi2 Android support is expanding. WPC reported that Qi2 Android phones began appearing in late 2024 and described “Qi2 Ready” phone-and-case combinations intended to provide the complete magnetic experience. Compatibility remains model-specific: check the manufacturer’s specification for the exact phone, and check whether a case is required to supply the magnetic ring.

Phones without a magnetic profile

A phone can be Qi-compatible without being magnetically compatible. It may charge on the pad while sliding out of position, or it may charge only at the lower ordinary-Qi rate. If magnetic attachment is important, verify the phone and case together rather than relying on the word “wireless.”

How to choose: a decision guide

Choose a certified Qi2 magnetic charger when

  • You use a Qi2-compatible iPhone or Android phone and want one charger that can work across brands.
  • You value magnetic alignment and a wide range of stands, travel chargers and car mounts.
  • You want the newer Qi2 25W path, provided your phone and software explicitly support Qi2 25W.
  • You are buying several chargers and prefer an open certification program rather than an Apple-only ecosystem.

Choose Apple’s MagSafe Charger when

  • You need an Apple-designated charger for a particular iPhone’s documented peak speed.
  • You use accessories that require the MagSafe designation rather than generic magnetic attachment.
  • You want Apple’s official charging behavior and are willing to meet its adapter and charger-part-number requirements.

Use ordinary Qi charging when

  • Your phone has no magnetic profile and you do not need a snap-on mount.
  • You are charging several Qi devices and alignment is not important.
  • The phone’s specification does not list Qi2 or MagSafe compatibility. A certified ordinary Qi pad is more predictable than assuming a magnetic mode will work.

What to check before ordering

  1. Identify the exact phone model. Record the model, generation and mini/Plus/Pro variant. Charging ceilings can differ within one family.
  2. Look for the certification mark. Choose the official Qi2 or Qi2 25W mark, or an Apple MagSafe designation. “Magnetic” by itself is not a certification.
  3. Confirm the wattage path. For Qi2 25W, verify support in the phone, charger and software. For Apple’s faster MagSafe tiers, match the required charger revision and 20W-or-greater or 30W-or-greater adapter.
  4. Check the case. Thick cases, metal plates and poorly positioned rings can reduce or stop charging. A case advertised as Qi2 Ready or MagSafe-compatible is more useful than a generic hard case with a separate metal disk.
  5. Check what is in the box. Confirm whether the USB-C cable and power adapter are included, and whether the cable is long enough for your stand, desk or vehicle.
  6. Compare practical hardware. Consider magnetic holding strength, heat dissipation, hinge or stand quality, cable length, warranty and the number of devices you intend to charge.

Cases, cards and other objects

Apple warns that thick or metal cases can slow or stop wireless charging. The same physical limitation applies to magnetic Qi2 charging: extra distance weakens the coupling between the coils, and metal can interfere with the magnetic and electrical field.

Remove cards, passports, badges and key fobs from between the phone and charger. Besides interrupting charging, a strong magnetic or heated charging surface can affect magnetic strips, contactless components or the object itself. Do not place a wallet accessory between the phone and puck unless its design is specifically intended for charging through it.

A magnetic ring stuck to the outside of a non-magnetic phone can improve positioning, but it does not turn that phone into a certified Qi2 or MagSafe device. It may also sit too high or too low for the charging coils in the phone and cause intermittent charging.

How to set up a magnetic charger correctly

  1. Use the correct adapter. Connect the charger to the wattage adapter specified for your phone and charger combination. Apple’s newer 25W-capable MagSafe configuration requires 30W or more; earlier supported configurations require 20W or more.
  2. Remove interfering objects. Take off metal-backed cases and move cards, badges, keys and other inserts away from the charging surface.
  3. Center the phone. Let the magnetic ring pull the phone into place. On a non-magnetic phone, place the phone’s coil over the center mark and expect less secure alignment.
  4. Check the charging indicator. The phone should show its normal wireless-charging animation or icon. If it repeatedly starts and stops, disconnect the puck and inspect the case, cable, adapter and temperature.
  5. Keep the setup ventilated. Wireless charging naturally produces heat. Avoid covering the puck or phone with bedding, clothing or other insulating material.

Troubleshooting common failures

The phone attaches but charges slowly

  • Check whether the phone supports only ordinary Qi or the original 15W Qi2 profile.
  • Verify that the charger is certified for the claimed Qi2 or Qi2 25W tier.
  • Use the required USB-C adapter; an adapter with insufficient output can cap the charger.
  • Remove a thick or metal case and retest.
  • Allow the phone to cool. Charging systems reduce power when temperature rises.

The phone does not attach magnetically

  • Confirm that the phone itself has a magnetic profile or that the case provides a correctly positioned ring.
  • Check whether you bought a non-magnetic Qi2 product using the Extended Power Profile.
  • Remove magnetic plates installed for a car mount if they sit between the phone and charger.

The charger works with one phone but not another

That is usually a compatibility difference, not a defective puck. One phone may support Qi2 while the other supports only ordinary Qi; an Android model may require a Qi2 Ready case; or an iPhone may have a different MagSafe speed tier. Compare each phone’s specification and case separately.

Charging stops when the phone is moved

Magnetic attachment is not the same as a guaranteed mechanical lock. Weak magnets, a thick case, an uneven mount or a vehicle’s vibration can shift the coils. Reposition the phone, remove the case for a test and use a mount designed for the phone’s weight.

Price, value and battery-health claims

There is no independent head-to-head price or battery-longevity study establishing that Qi2 is always cheaper, cooler or better for battery health than MagSafe. Prices vary by charger design, included adapter, cable, stand hardware and warranty. Compare equivalent configurations rather than the standard name alone.

Both systems manage power electronically and may reduce output as the battery fills or the phone warms. That behavior is normal, but the exact thermal profile depends on the phone, charger, adapter, case and room temperature. A certified product gives you a tested interoperability baseline; it does not make every charging session identical.

Bottom line: which charger should you buy?

Buy a certified Qi2 magnetic wireless charger if your phone supports Qi2 and you want flexible, cross-brand charging with reliable magnetic alignment. Buy Apple’s MagSafe Charger if official Apple integration, a MagSafe-specific accessory or your iPhone’s documented maximum MagSafe speed matters more than ecosystem flexibility. For either choice, verify the exact phone model, certification mark, charger revision, case and USB-C adapter before paying for a wattage claim.
